Ya know given Alex YIIK’s theme is supposed to be symbolical of his self importance and in reality is basically mocking him and is inflated ego, a meme version of his theme is almost even more thematically appropriate
Yeah, the way how Alex became a meme is frankly surreal and I love it. While the game's egocentrism on Alex literally wants you to completely hate him, the world decided to completely laugh on him, which is a fate far worse
"I stood, bewildered, at this man who stood in front of me. his mouth jagged lines, his eyebrows resembling a greater than symbol, but the thing I could not get my eyes off of was the fact that he was made entirely of wooden logs and tree parts. the process of which he was made was likely long and involving the cutting down of trees. wood truly is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. It is an an organic material - a natural composite of cellulose fibers that are strong in tension and embedded in a matrix of lignin that resists compression. but yet, despite the eruption of thoughts, all that I could utter from my mouth was a single 'nice', followed by making a face similar in structure to his." -Alex Yiik
Love this song, so I’m going to pull a true Alex Yiik moment and use a quote from someone smarter than me. From Tehsnakerer’s excellent Yiik analysis, on this piece: “The theme for Alex communicates his character better then the game does. Acoustic instruments tell us he’s a hipster, the beeps and boops tell us he’s a dork. The voices in the background steadily rise to demonstrate his growing importance, but this isn’t dignified chanting: it’s a pompous idiot becoming more important than he realizes or deserves. This track is used for motifs in the mind dungeon and for later reveals-nice subtle hints that connect Alex to concepts and other characters. You’d think this track would be ten minutes long and have two minutes of random ska and a spoken word bit from a Murakami novel, but no this music communicates a good story in good time.”
I love TehSnakerer, one of my favourite essay channels. I love how he delves into obscure oddities like Brigand and that one Russian FPS with the sociopathic protagonist, some of my favourite videos by him.
Trees, and consequently wood, have been around for roughly 360 Million years. However, a man made of wood who has the capacity to live is something not yet possible, or rather it would be post modern.
…It still fits him, which is the best part. Man, sometimes you forget just how GREAT the music is from a story-telling standpoint. Honestly, it makes me wonder if YIIK would have been better off as a Wall-E sort of deal, where they don’t talk and the story is instead communicated through graphics and music. I do believe the story in YIIK is at least somewhat salvageable, I’m just curious about this.
Despite the game's infamy, Alex's theme is one of the few genuinely great songs in an ost that's otherwise questionable. It sounds so obnoxiously arrogant and punchable in a way that sums up Alex as a person perfectly, far more nuanced and well executed charactisation and themeing than any of the writing in the game, Lord knows that's true.
I'm going to play Devil's advocate here but I think Yiik as a game, no matter how flawed it is, has more soul than most AAA titles that release nowadays, and that if you look deeper into it than just "bad game exdee" there might be something for you to enjoy in there
Isn't the entire plot that the main character wants to fuck some interdimensional being who is based off of a real life missing and probably dead person?
@@generallyunimportant I think he’s just encouraging lightening up on Yiik a bit. Like, take a look at any of the big annual franchises, or even something like Mass Effect Andromeda. On a functional level it’s leagues above the disaster Yiik is, but those games are so soulless while Yiik is oozing with passion-which to me, makes it a lot better than any of those
Yeah. Also, the story is way deeper than most people think. There's a lot of stuff implied that changes the meaning of the game, and people looking at everything in the story at surface level. A lot of the plot holes/mistakes are actually intentional and mean something. IMO the story in YIIK is one of the best stories in any video game, unironically, once you understand it what it's really about. And I'm also HYPED for the 1.5 update that will make it even better.
YIIK and most modern AAA games are bad for different reasons. The former is bad because the author wrote terrible dialogue and a bad plot; the latter is bad because modern games are not so much artistic works as they are scientifically-designed dopamine traps with slapped-together game assets layered on top. Thing is, we shouldn't treat "this game didn't ship in an incomplete state or try to get me addicted to buying loot boxes" as a positive critique. It's the bare minimum standard for not ripping people off.
Rips like these are always nice to see also when I read the title I thought it said post mordem instead of post modern and got ptsd from it and if you know you know
"It was my mistake for thinking high quality rips were art, they're stupid memes for zoomers and it's considered poor taste to try to talk about any musical parodies with them"
I don't understand why the OST title for the main character's theme uses a different name than what he's actually called. Who the hell is "Eagleston"? He's called Alex YIIK for a reason
Actually Alex's theme is one of the few genuinely good songs in the game, it's obnoxious AF but genuinely a great peice of auditory storytelling and fits how unbearable of a person Alex is in general. TehSnakerer explains it perfectly in his essay. The game is one of the most impressively painful pieces of media I've ever seen but let's not ignore the small handful of exceptions amongst the trashfire.
@@_-Lx-_ maybe dont use an already dubious understanding of a game as the basis for quite literally all of your points. plus, salt tastes good so idc lol
The game gets impressively bad during some of the midgame and lategame sections, stuff like the original Golden Alpaca scene and the devs allowing the option for Rory to commit suicide but still leaving his voice lines in the endgame causing the whole cutscene to desync hilariously. I reccomend watching TehSnakerer's essay on it, it's the the feeling of being unable to look away from a train crash personified into a video game.

I feel like this interview clip is taken out of context a lot and used as evidence that the creator is a terrible person with no concept of art. His mom had just died and his multi year passion project had become the pissing block of the entire internet, not surprising he was in a bad mood.
@@leightonpetty4817 If I remember correctly that clip was about what makes him (Andrew A.) angry. That was pretty much the whole point of the show he was on. It was a partially comedic show by Dick Masterson and the whole Art argument was just Andrew slightly exaggerating what he read on twitter earlier that day from some rando who said that Video games arent art or something of that sort. He only did it for some sort of comedic effect, he even spoke properly about the issue right after but people took the clip so out of context that it made Andrew look like a bad guy it's insane.
