- In today's video, Paul From The Studio Rats is looking at possibly the most versatile guitar amp ever Amplied Nation Ampliphonix And Gain.
This fantastic amp is one of only a few amps ive ever tried that can trully do amazing cleans and amazing drive tones.

Here is what Amplified Nation say about the Ampliphonix And Gain.
The Ampliphonix and Gain is a unique offering in our product line. This amp has two independent channels and an output section of either 6L6 or EL34 tubes. This unique amplifier is built with both Ultraphonix Plexi high-gain and Ultraphonix Fender cleans in the same package. The tones are astounding when laying down heavy gain tracks, or when you’re looking for shimmer and clarity.
The Ampliphonix channel is the clean side of the amp. It’s based off of an original Dumble Ultraphonix that we had in the shop for about a year. Its got a very unique sound with a beautiful swirl that sounds like the amp is actually breathing notes from your guitar. This channel is bold and powerful, with remarkable character and presence. It has a bright switch for additional tonal flexibility.
The Gain channel has a high gain recollective of a modded Marshall Plexi with more evenly rounded bass notes. Its high gain preamp rocks hard but can also be dialed back for great classic rock sounds. This channel is extremely fun to play and it it is a remarkable experience to be able to switch from such great cleans to this powerful blanket of overdrive.
The Ampliphonix and Gain has reverb on both channels. The amp comes with a two-button footswitch that toggles the channels and a clean boost.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Blimey! On the strength of that intro I am 100% convinced. The cleans just speak for themselves, astounding... and on the plexi side, the tones really did seem to sing.
I picked up this pack. I own this amp and your captures are spot on. Your clean profile is now my number one!
Cheers Mike.
Where can I get the tonex profiles?
This is easily the best two channel amp I've ever heard. Absolutely crazy how much ground it covers.
Yes! Amplified Nation amps are insanely good. Their Steel String Singer amp was the first one that made my jaw drop even more than a Magnatone Twilighter Stereo. Yes they are expensive, but not much more than other high end amps like Soldano, Magnatone, and TwoRock.
well said.
All the videos I have seen of the mag twi 2x12 stereo, it sounds like an AMP I would really love really livens the Room it is played in, to bad they are break a bank account expensive as well as any great amp. by Amplified Nation. Wish I could send a Amp. Nation to JOHN CORDY, with his playing it just screams for it. That is one of the Beautys of the Modelling world NO ONE OFFERS a MAGNATONE in any of the Modellers yet, they NEED to, along with that VIRASTAR Tremelo. Wish they would.
@@ksharpe10, ...... It's called a Varister and it's not a tremolo, it's an electronic component of the Magnatones Vibrato circuit.
@@loulagro2315 Yeah I have studied it, seen the newer Viraster, seen that spelled a couple different ways to, it is the circuit and a really COOL one/Pitch shifting vibrato. The closest Fender ever came was the harmonic trem. in the Brown Face amps.
@ksharpe10 , Yes it's pretty awesome. I have collected a whole bunch of old Maggie's from 1959's to 1968, .... 260A's, 213, 413, 441A/442/T42 ..... they're all very unique cool sounding amps. Magnatone vibrato is definitely different sounding than Fenders harmonic trem in the larger Brownface line. On a day to day usability I actually prefer Fender harmonic or even the brownface bias trem on the smaller brownfaces but it's all personal preference.
Man that clean sound is insane 🤘
I’ve absolutely loved watching the new amp videos. Also I want to say you’re one of my favorite players on TH-cam. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers fella that’s really nice to hear.
I love that you guys are doing all of these amp captures. I am buying all of them for my TONEX. Another really cool clean tone amp would be Magnatone. Their Twilighter Stereo and Panoramic amps are insane. The Amplified Nation Steel String Singer is another incredible amp.
I 2nd the Magnatone!!!!
Wow, this is such a good tone and playing! I only hope it has not been post produced, as it sounds too good. Also the first time I fell in love with this "single coils" on the LP in combination with the Plexi channel, just awesome!
Sign me up. This is a dessert island amp because it does it all and does it amazingly well. More gain than I'd need on the Gain channel, but whatever.
It does sound wonderful but a lot of that is from what comes out of your fingers. You really do have a great touch on the fretboard.
I’ve got a 100 watt head with a set of JAN 6L6 Phillips. Killer amp!!!!!
Amp sounds great and so do you. Love how you saved the burn for the end…
Awesome playing Paul !! and Awesome sounding amp ❤ 🎸
One of the best reviews and demonstrations of this particular AN amplifier model.
I’d buy the 22 watt in a heartbeat - just need to sell my Mk1 Boogie RI first🥴
Phenomenal playing and the overdriven tones are to die for!
I absolutely love your playing Paul!
Cheers Tomasz.
Before you finished the sentence starting with “now this is subjective,” I was thinking “yes. Agreed.”
That’s THE clean tone for me.
Hopefully I can find one of these amps when I hit the lottery…😂
Reverb is really nice but I do wish it had the Dumble send/return for laying it on
…WHAT? The gain sound?!?!
100% agree that this would probably be the only amp I would need. Only thing left to test would be running a metal dist preamp through the fx loop for some chunk. All bases covered. Bonkers.
I would like to highlight not only the tone of this amp, but your playing and the quality of the record. Thanks for that
Thanks boss.
Nice vid, paul. The clean channel already has a lot of gain even at a low level.Very impressive sound similar in gain to a bassman but with the "sweetness" of a black panel amp
Man, that is the best tone I've ever heard. I already have a 2x12 cab loaded with Creambacks (one Neo and one regular M65). I must have the 50 watt head.
Got the tonex packs tonight for this and the /13 tweed. If they sound anywhere close to the matchless patch I am in for a treat. I beg of you, please get a /13 RSA23 or BTR 23 (I am a former BTR owner and never should have sold it ) or an FTR37 and do whatever you did to the Matchless for Tonex. I can't get over how much your matchless patch sounds to my Bad Cat. Sounds fantastic with every guitar with minimal tweaking. Thanks for all you guys have done for the Tonex platform and the channel overall.
Well , how are the patches ?
@@benallmark9671 they are all amazing. I prefer this one with a strat and TSR matchless independence for soapbars, my tele and humbuckers. Will also say the /13 tweed and Friedman BE50 are also fantastic.
@@communitykyle that’s awesome. What do the patches cost ?
Well the price is around Mesa Mark series, some Friedmans, maybe a Bogner Uber and some other brands. A new Fender 65 blackface reissue is $2k nothing is cheap anymore. If you want quality it’s gonna cost.
Luv the Plexi side and Dumblish side. Best of both worlds. I need at least 50w 🤦🏼♂️😂
This over a Mesa Mark all day. Not even close imo. Yes I suspect all these ppl complaining about prices for Quality handmade gear will be in for a rude awakening in the future when they realize it’s only going to get more expensive the longer they wait 😂
This isn’t eggs where lower inflation drops the price in the future, this is unfortunately reality now. Everybody is in different stages of denial, but in the end builders know what the market will bear. In the age of digital everything and Ai pop music, we should be thankful AN is building tube amps at all!
Ya.....That is simply an incredible sound. Even through TH-cam.
Paul, I would pay for QC captures of this! I mainly use a Bassman in my QC, would love both sides of this. My main electrics being a 1989 V62 reissue Strat and a P90 Revstar Pro, not too dissimilar to what you used here. Great playing, great channel. Thank you.
What Paul and Lincoln brewster both have in common is anything they play is purely gold and tone to die for .
Cheers, I dont know Lincoln Brewster but ill check him out. Thanks for the tip.
Really one of the best amps I've ever heard. But Unfortunately a little bit expensive 😞
It is pricey but you pay for quality. Cheers Harry.
NOT for what it is it isnt
How Much ...?
What an absolutely phenomenal amp. Fantastic playing too. I love that LP with P90s but you might have made me consider a strat too!
cheers Sam
Thanks Paul, loved the review.. just a simple request.. when you demo please change pickups, esp on Strats.. btw your CS Strat is awesome..
Great demo of a great amp, tnx!
That's a seriously lovely amp!! I guess free postage to Brisbane would be out of the question.
the intro tones were amazing. I never achieved a tone so nice from my middle position.
Cheers Manta, I was using the neck/middle pos.
Man between this and the Matchless Independence you reviewed with the Guvnor pedal not sure which one is my favorite. They both sound amazing! Thanks for the awesome reviews!
It's a great sound. Unfortunately, on my smartphone, it only sounds like John Cordy's Line 6 sound.
Love the arpeggio and resolution at 5:35.
wow! what a demo!!! the quality of the tones and the recording, sold me on the amp, wonder if you can do a video on how you record an amp
Thanks! Will do
Impressiv sounding Amp
Sounds really great but you make everything sound really fantastic to be fair. 😬👍
Thankyou sir.
I love listening to your demos with my headphones on. May I call you Paulie?
Call me anything you want baby.
I'd love to try one out. They seem to be too high gain, all the demos have quite a bit of crunch at low volume. The only clean tone demo was with very light playing, I wish you had dug in a little at that point. I love the tone but I need versatility and clean headroom is a must.
That amp sounds amazing!
You need to create a Kemper profile of this amp!
Please try the preamp out into CAB IR's and EFX - I want to see about a Recording Preamp based upon Ampliphonics + Gain circuit . And talk Amplified Nation into it ...
I like those tones a lot, and dialed in something near identical on my HX Stomp "Grammatico" Preset, which is based on a Dumble, a couple months ago! 😎
Nice one!
Great player!
Nice tone nice playing
It does sound amazing! But that price 😳😢
Quality and US labour costs.
Are those Kinman pickups - the single coils? Beautiful sounding Amp , yes.
Damn man! I been looking at this is close to the Joe Bonamassa sound on the Gibson in my opinion! 😎🤟
Paul, I really appreciate the excellent information, great video content and the variety of gear you demo...which always achieves excellent results and I find extremely helpful ! I have a question and since I find your demos very trustworthy. I currently have a Bogner Goldfinger (GF) SL45 and it does the Fender BF and Marshall Plexi thing very well in a two channel format. However, it's a head/cabinet and I'd prefer a combo. When I saw your demo the Amplified Nation Ampliphonix and Gain I thought wow, this amp is worth looking into to achieve the type of sounds I want and in a combo format...do you feel this amp is really as good as advertised and could take the place of my Bogner GF? Thank you.
Wonderful sound
Pls do the Bombshell Overdrive next. I’d buy that in a heart beat.
Lovely tones. Nice work. What's your recording setup? Was the amp mic'd or direct into captor or ox box?
Mmm. I don’t usually go weak kneed for amps - but that worked for me!
Sounds fantastic
Hi, please could you tell me in which way you miked this amp? I don’t see any mics, did you use some other cabinet, or you used some reactive load box? Thanks!
i got a strat for that kind of tone and was looking for the amp and feel... i also love overdrive and distortion.,,, omg will this be the end of my search!?
if I have to hear one more Mayer intro like that, I'm going to throw my strats into the ocean ... LMAO
Any chance of giving us a demo of the captures for this amp for the ToneX maybe as a side by side im really interested in this. Can get these amps here in Australia but I’m tempted with a simplified pedalboard using HX effects and the ToneX using midi to change patches on the ToneX.
Need to open that delay up a bit more to let it all breathe for that slap back on slow dancing
Sounds excellent
And I like your tasty directed playing ...
There is no noise from the Strat Style Pickups - and they seem to have more bottom end than Fenders - what are they ?
I think its the best amp made for what i want.
Hi. Great video! I wonder what do you suggest as a speaker for playing live with the Tonex??
Great to see you handle that big fat Poblano neck so well…BTW The amp sounds great
cheers Steve.
Space Age technology baby!! :)
this amp always interested me
Sounds ok
Can't wait for the Katana presets of this. LOL! 🤓
Amazing😍
Do you have ToneX pack of this amp?
Yes it’s on tonenet and our website
@@TheStudioRats thank you!
In closeups of the amp face around 7 min in you appeared to have the treble down at around 1/3 and the bass up around 2/3 to 3/4 - is that perhaps why you still felt you needed the bright switch on when you were playing the Strat?
To me the lead is a bit thin and raspy, but i can see why some folks like it.
Hello Paul! Could you help me please? I've tried every Tonex profile of you with my Masterbuilt Fender Strat and couldn't find a sound even remotely similar to the one in your intro! This is because Tonex is incomparable in sound quality and realism to a real amplifier, isn’t it?
strange, since I was able to create profiles that look very similar to the real amp
Silky!👏🏻
What is the name of capture of this amp on Tonex? Great channel by the way :)
Cheers it’s for sale on our Website the studio rats amplifonix and gain
I have been a bit uninspired lately, idk if it’s my HX stomp? Or my ear, but I need something to respark some creativity.
Amp? ToneX? Other?
Hey... I have one of those.
Pretty sure I can get some similar sounds from my Harley Benton tube15. Way cheaper too.
WOW!
I want to buy this pack but I would like to hear how the tonex patches sound. There are no samples on the site.
the 800th video i have seen on youtube of the amp that “does it all” 😅
some amps you dial them back and they lose all balls...this one seems to retain that "it s maxed " kinda sound at all gain levels...amazing...banging amp dude!!!!Really does sound dumbleish in the clean.
This sounds really good but I’m definitely a Bassman kinda guy
Paul could make a Gorilla amp sound good.
while playing a $75 Amazon strat :)
Thats a blast from the past. Im not I could.
I wonder how the Gain side would compare the Friedman Phil X, since you loved that one too. Any thoughts?
It’s very different to the X amp, the X has more punch, I’m guessing that this combo is only 22 watts has a lot to do with it and the higher powered versions would be more like it.
@@TheStudioRats Yes. There is a lot of praise for low-powered amps these days, but IMO, 50 watts and up does give you something extra: punch. And of course, more headroom. Same sort of thing for speaker cabs. 1x12's are common. But a closed-back 4x12 can't be beat for thump. It all largely depends on what type of music you play, as well as if you need to lug the things around.
If I were to buy an Ampliphonix and Gain, I'd get an EL34 50-watt, since that is more appropriate for the Gain/Marshallesque side of things.
But I'm also tempted by the AN Reverb Overdrive. I already have a 1986 JCM 800 2203, though I'd sell it if buying the Amp and Gain. The Phil X is perfect for what I play, but I can't stand the ridiculous faceplate labelling; and I'm trying to get away from four power tubes.
Anyway, thanks for answering my question. Much appreciated.
When you add external reverb to the mix around 4:48 what is the external reverb? Sounds incredible!
I wanted to know the same thing?
paul, you mentioned in this video that you are using an attenuator. can you share which one you are using here? I have this model on order now and would like to look into adding the "right" kind of attenuation.
Im using a two notes torpedo studio. But it’s a load box not an attenuator.
I think your guitar needs a bit more relicing.
On these amps...do you prefer the 6l6 or 6v6 tone....for tone only ?
How about a preamp WITH the phase inverter tube [ perhaps faux inverter saturated and padded down to line level ] ...
With a special switch that can actually become a phase inverter to go into a power amp.
No tube guitar preamp has ever included a phase inverter tube .
Or a faux one that does not invert but adds harmonics ?
For people who are recording and don't want to compromise .
Let me [ us ] know here.
I am extremely impressed with the 22 watt amp.
*'You have bloody done it !'
The Plexi sound is very warm as well and you can hear the upper harmonic ovtave and 5th etc.
*I have actually texted here in a Brit or Aussie Accent
Ok never mind that part .
Let me know what you think !
Nice demo and playing that shows the Amp / chords sound good overdriven / unlike most Amps ....
One day
Beautiful but i must have missed the metal tones
Metal is doable by the amp, these fingers don’t.
What's the name of the tune you plane in the outro? I've heard you play it a couple of times already on the channel
Just something I came up with scatting about a few months ago, no name as yet. Cheers Aaron.
Did you order direct from Amplified Nation or did you get from a dealer? Just interested in how long the lead times are.
I bought it used.
AN usually has options in stock
A Whole lot less than Two Rock lol. AN should have some stock. I asked Eli what the lead was on his new TR Vintage Deluxe at the NAMM show and he said 18 months 😳😳
The clean is like a more singing sustaining Fender even fully clean like the better Dumbles .
And there are no nasty harmonics on the boosted cleans OR on the Plexi !
Extremely good !
'We know Robert .
Lol. See how I saved you time there by misquoting you .
It has more usable gain than a Two Rock at lower volume and smoother harmonics !
It sounds like a '3 Rock '. Lol.
Not sure if I missed it in the video, but did this amp have the EL34 or 6L6’s in it?
6v6’s in the 22 watt version,
So would you choose this one or a the overdrive reverb??
Overdrive reverb
I play a an ES345 clone with low gain humbuckers because of my picking and playing style. Will I have to give it up for a solidbody when I get a 120 volt version of this amp? And do I want want EL84s or the 6L6s to get this tone? Anyone?
Sounds like 6V6
play shoegaze w/ this amp
plss
You mentioned an attenuator, what kind are you using?
I was using a Two notes torpedo studio
Is that the ceramic Creamback or the Neo version?
It’s the full creamback
