She was planning to goodwill the lot but she thought enough to let his mom know and offer to have him take a look. If she was giving them away anyway I’d take what’s good and possibly offer her something for her generosity.

I found a pair of AR3s in a widows garage that she gave me for doing a little repair work. But I had to have the woofers reconed, pots cleaned, and crossover recapped so they weren't really free! But I like them for classical music better than my JBL 4313s, so have them set up as a "system B" on my Marantz 7013 receiver. Rears are Dynaco A25s. All vintage, like me!

YES YES YES! I too, have been saying for years that the well made HiFi gear back then was not merely 'mid-fi', as so many think! Some of the hefty 'boat anchor' Fishers, Pioneers, Technics, and Onkyo receivers i've owned, truly sounded amazing, and were built like a tank. I even drove a pair of Magnepan MMG speakers with my current Pioneer SX-780, and the sonics were quite high-end. We're talking timbral accuracy, inner detail, sweet midrange, ample bass, shimmering highs, etc. ..... many of the attributes that are ascribed to high end sound. I've been checking out many of your videos today, and am subscribing!

Haul all of it out of there as fast as you can. Go over all the models and keep the finest one for yourself, and sell the rest, and give her a fat check out of the blue. She will get the same feeling you had when your eyes met these beauties. She doesn't need to know too much, just that she is richer than before. Not implying ripping her off, just both of you make out very well.

Assuming all the gear is really there, and in good condition, I conservatively estimate these would fetch $30K on Ebay. Perhaps more. The owner does not realize they are sitting on a gold mine. Perhaps you could help sell the items for the owner in exchange for keeping one of them?

Wow, what a gold mine of receivers!! My heart and breathing changed state when I first saw the Sansui G22000. Wow! I'm still shaking writing this!! My moral barometer says to tell her what they're worth. But my audio addiction wants it all for myself - lol. But if she is comfortable financially, she would just say take them off her hands. After all, better someone like you take them, who appreciates them and will take care if them, than the salvage folks that will be coming. Good luck. Relax. It's a good dilemma to be in, as many don't get the chance!!!

You seem very knowledgeable. I had a receiver in the early 70s, possibly Panasonic, I don’t remember, but it had a wired remote on a 10 or 15 foot long cord. I can’t seem to find any info, I remember it had a blue display and the remote controlled the radio tuner which used a motor to tune in the radio stations via the remote. If you can find any info I would be great full. Wish I had kept it, it would probably be a museum piece now.

In reality the 300 w/ch Sansui 33000 put out more power than the Technics 330 w/ch due to it's higher current capability especially into low impedance loads and on dynamic bursts where it exceeded well above 500 watts. The Technics only managed a little more than 330 watts into any load and also on peaks was well below Sansui's 33000. Since it came in two pieces, some argued the Sansui was not actually a receiver even though it was listed as such.

What I would do is to tell her that there is a small segment of the population who would absolutely flip out about those receivers, and that I am one of them. I'd tell her that in their current unknown condition they are probably worth hundreds of dollars, maybe even thousands. Then I'd tell her I'm happy to take it all away for nothing. Finally, I'd ask her if I were to sell any of it, would she want to share the proceeds? In my experience most people respond to that with, "Just get it out of here." The other possibility is that they want to know exactly how much is worth and then they want you to leave so that can call whoever they think will give them that much plus more because they are sure you underestimated. A month later they call you back offering to sell it all to you for more than you said it was worth, or just the broken items that someone else wasn't interested in.
I haven't seen how this ends. I'm eager to find out.

    • @geraldford6409
      @geraldford6409 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Perfect rundown of the typical process
I would say mostly the same things.
Need to explain to nontechnical people that given the age of the items, they would need triage and inspection/testing, and probably restoration work.
So they need to be valued in the un-restored (Caps/corrosion/etc) condition.
All this requires effort and time, reducing their value even more from their unrestored values, which amount to "for parts" value.
Hauling the items away is work and therefore has value, so the best compromise is to assume for parts values and if that's about the haul away/cleanup cost, call it a day. Maybe a couple of token $20's depending on exterior condition of items

I scored a mint Pioneer SX-850 at a garage sale in my neighborhood around 2013 or so for $20. Other than typical scratchy switched and pots, worked fine. Sold it a coupe years later to a pawn shop for $200 or so, assuming it needed a recap/internal restore.
SInce a full electronics restore/recap would run ~$400-$500 with shipping, figured that was a fair profit ;)

I own a few monsters; in fact I am listening to one now. Just cause you have more wattage than you will ever need; does not mean you have to push it every time. Mine is currently hooked to a pair of JBL bookshelves. Why? Because the phono stage in the main event in mine. It very happily pushes those bookshelves and one day I will get it setup with some Klipsch K-horns. I hope you told her the truth. If I were you; I would have wanted to buy all on that shelf. But the reality is you can only listen to one at a time. Choosing the one that best suits your taste is key; restore the rest and sell them on Ebay. So many folks are looking for those models; you could split the profits with her and she would be thankful.

I think the only way to go is a good high current 200 watt per channel. Back in the 70's I did have a really high end Marantz receiver. I wish I still have it but I moved on to more high end stuff. I really don't care for a receiver anymore or an integrated amp. I like nothing but components... I have to laugh. My garage is stuffed with a lot of old audio equipment. I kept all the boxes...Just like this.

I have a mint "Sony STR 7035L" Stereo Receiver dating from around mid 1970s, built in Japan but assembled in West Germany I believe, as it has also the Long Wave (LW) band in addition to FM and MW so a three band Receiver. Bought it in 2003 for around £68.00 ! and in Pristine condition fully working order. Not selling it and not in use the last couple of years but like looking at it !. But as for comparing it with a modern mid fi stereo amplifier costing around £700.00 or so, the Sony is not as good, Great Tuner though. New cost would have been around £130.00 so comparable in cost of say £700.00 at todays values. My first HI FI Magazine was "Audio" (British publication) from December 1973. and has a Sony Catalogue printed inside but doesn't show this model. out of the Thousands of HI FI mags bought that is the only one i kept! and the Sony Receiver is the first one owned in all that time.
