  • Can you give an older child up for adoption? The answer is yes, adoption is always an option. Take it from Bobbi, a struggling single mother who knew an adoption plan would provide a better life not only for her son, but also for her.
Whether you are struggling financially, feel that you cannot properly parent your child at this time, or simply want to provide your child with more than what you can currently offer, “giving your older child up” for adoption can be a positive, loving choice.
While the bulk of American Adoptions’ placements are of newborns and infants, we are able to work with some parents who are considering putting a toddler up to 4 years old for adoption on a case-by-case basis.
Throughout the toddler adoption process, you will still have the same rights and choices as any mother placing a baby for adoption:
    - You can choose the adoptive parents for your child; American Adoptions works with many families who are willing and excited to adopt an older infant or toddler, and occasionally a child up to 4 years old
    - You can choose the type of relationship you want to have with your child and the adoptive parents after placement
    - You will get the unlimited, 24/7 counseling and support you need to make a fully informed adoption decision that you feel confident with
    - You are entitled to free adoption services; your legal and counseling costs will always be covered for you
    - You are in control of the adoption process
Whatever circumstances have led you to adoption, placing your toddler with a private agency like American Adoptions allows you to take control of your situation and your child’s future.
As a licensed national domestic adoption agency, we have helped thousands of birth mothers find adoptive families for their babies. You can contact us at 1-800-ADOPTION to get more information on the adoption process and to speak with a professional about your specific situation.

My Adoption counselor sent this video and it gives me hope. I understand what she meant when she said” not wanting her child to grow up in the same environment”. Thank you for being so brave and courageous. Continue to inspire many with your story✨✨😌

What I’m thinking about currently, my son is Autistic I can’t get him in daycare, due to waiting list, I can only work 3 hrs a day at night cuz he is always pulling me from my work station to where iv been fired from jobs. I can’t make enough to support him or myself the whole situation is so unfair on him when he didn’t even ask to be here. Been served eviction notice 3 times, I can’t even afford him winter clothes and my mental health is declining we are alway in the house due to my anxiety and discomfort and I just don’t know how to break free to financial freedom. He deserves so much more then what I’m capable of.

We are so sorry you are going through this difficult time. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate and are doing the very best you can. While we are not able to assist with special needs situation or children over the age of 4 I would suggest reaching out to Downey Side at 1800-US-Child (872-4453) or Open Arms Adoptions at 330-697-4751 openarmsadopt.com/i-want-to-adopt/different-needs-adoption/ to see if they can assist. We wish you the very best and hang in there!

…..social services…? Your income, or lack there of, should I believe qualify you for things like housing, as well as daycare, at no cost to you. (Or perhaps, at least a very minimal one) there are programs, diaper banks, food pantrys that often times have clothing as well for free. Though I imagine you’ve probably already looked into all of this if you’re here/grappling with this decision.

@@poppy83.Though these things are nice organizations such as diaper banks those are temporary solutions and I think its the stress of survival mode of being able to provide financially and not really being able to give the emotional needs because the mind is focused on providing financially

The fact she allowed her son to help guide the process as well as her head showed what an amazing mother she was. My husband and I are open to an older adoption and think it is beautiful that a birth mother can choose the best decision for her child at any age.

Going through a lot. Had to give up my first child to my parents. My second child right now has cps involvement and I don't live in a stable world. I want what's best for my daughter. Don't wish this wort of decision on anyone. But we as parents have to make hard choices that have the best outcome for our children.

Wow, this story sent chills down my spine. What an amazing sacrifice and gift that the birth mother gave to her son and to his adoptive family. I couldn’t hold back the tears when the little boy pulled out a random picture from the stack and said “mama” and the birth mother ultimately chose that family. And at the end when the birth mom says, “my son is with a really great family that loves him and loves me”…. It’s a beautiful and heartwarming thing that she feels cared for by the adoptive family too. Truly an inspiring story.

Right?!? Was the 1st thing I thought too. Like MA’AM??? And apparently she’s not the only one who thinks a 2 year old has the wherewithal to choose his family. Hes *2!!!* FFS! He doesn’t even have a clue what on earth is going on!! I mean, I’m trying not to make judgements, but it would seem shear think that way as a means to ease any guilt/make herself feel better…..lol but why someone in the comments with no connection to the story/baby would agree, like this is a normal thing….the toddler picking his own fam….the adoption at 2-like. Idk. Ok I’m sorry I’m sorry. But really…..she couldn’t have just done this 2 years before…? Did *that* much change…? *that* much…- to the point of giving up for adoption. …..idk…maybe I should stop while I’m ahead…this just rubs me the wrong way to say the least. At the end of the day of course, what’s best for the child is always #1, yes. So I mean…so long as that’s been and is still the driving force in all of this, I guess…god bless or something?

  • @lucymadelengregg4482

I am in pain. My whole pregnancy and post partum was traumatic. I didn't bond with my child and fell into depression. (not the postpartum depression linked to hormones)
Really the hormones where the only thing really Wich kept me attached to my child. As they disappeared I didn't want to be around him anymore.
I knew it would come this way, I knew everything was going to fall apart when I gave birth. And it had been best if I had given him up early on.
Now he's 2, I don't enjoy this. I don't have a positive relationship towards him if at best neutral. And it makes everything so hard. And it hurts so much. I know he only wants me and giving him away would destroy him. But giving him away feels like a relief to both of us.
    I'm in pain.

I’m in the same boat. My daughter is 19 months old and I’m slowly wishing I had just given her up before she turned a year old. I let family pressure make me keep her and my indecisiveness. But ultimately I’m unhappy and struggle so much with my mental health. Idk what to do…
