I give regularly, and I like to tell people that my reason is that it's literally the least I can do:

- no work
- short time
- free snacks

I remember getting a small bottle of Guinness when I first started giving blood 😊
Where I live you get juice while you're sitting during the extraction, then you get a voucher for the cafeteria to get a big baguette sandwich of your choice and a soft drink or coffee / tea.
You should come to Perth, Western Australia to give blood. Party pies, sausage rolls, milk shakes, juices, tea, coffee, nuts, chips, banana bread, fruit cake, gluten free options, whatever milk you like. I give blood plasma and they always thank me profusely and remind me that I saved three lives today. No better feeling than that.
Sheesh, now you tell me! I'm 66 and can no longer give blood. Dang, I should have moved to Australia decades ago. Drats.
In America we get three ounces of juice and a cookie about 30mm across before they shoo you out. And that would be the American Red Cross, who sells the blood.
Christ, it really is like a kid's birthday party, isn't it? 😅
@@Anne--Marie Maybe it's because they're already paying you to donate in the USA. Have I got that right? In Aus we volunteer so they probably look after us so well to make sure we keep coming back. I'm 68 though and still donating. Over here you can't BECOME a donor after 60 but you can REMAIN one. I'm proud to say my next donation will be my 100th 🥳

@@coffeebeancarol In the United States we do not get paid for donating whole blood. We do have for profit plasma centers that pay people to donate plasma, which can be done much more frequently.
The American Red Cross, which takes a donated pint (473 ml) of whole blood, gives one the little bit of juice and a tiny cookie before shooing one off.
The for profit plasma centers do not provide anything.
It is wonderful that you are able to donate blood! I had to stop because of anemia. How much blood do they take at a time from people in Australia?

Give platelets if you can: they're critical to the recovery of chemo patients, and in constant demand because they have to be used within five days 😮

I used to love the biscuits, but I can't give blood anymore due to the medication I'm on😢
Me too. ☹️ I was very close to making my 100th plasma donation and then I was put on a new medication and could no longer donate. I was very disappointed at no longer being eligible to donate as I really liked being able to. Unfortunately I will always be on this medication and can never donate again. 🥲
