I used to be a technician for CN Telecommunications. Back in the mid 70s, I was a relief tech, based in Capreol. In that position, I'd travel around much of Ontario region, relieving other techs who were on vacation or training. I often traveled over that section of track. When I was assigned to work in Geraldton, I'd drive to Nakina, Aroland, Longlac and Hillsport, as well as down to Beardmore and Jellicoe. If I was in Armstrong, I'd take a train, usually a freight, to Auden & Ferland. When in Hornepayne, I'd go to Oba and from Capreol, up to Foleyet. I also worked on the Kapuskasing and Pagwa subs, driving along highway 11 from Kapuskasing & Hearst to do my work. I also worked out of North Bay, Stratford and Guelph. Back then, I spent most of the year on the road.
I love watching this video again and i remember my parents telling me about the washout that claimed 2 lives. I went to school with Mr Stolz 2 sons and played hockey with one of them

On the Allan water sub and later the reddit sub. Cool how 101 sat in the hole while 102 whipped by. usually the opposite. I stopped this train at Collins once , due to my welder pullers not being able to release from the rail. I learned a lesson that day. Former Holland Welder.
I have no idea how old you are, but might you know a couple of guys named Bob Nelson or Pat Lacey? They were CN Telecommunications techs who worked in Nakina back in the 70s. Also, in my work I'd often stop freights. When I needed a ride, I'd get on the dispatchers phone and ask for a stop (usually a dead slow roll).
The worst is that EMD is now moving on to 4-stroke diesel from the EMD's strong held tradition of 2-stroke technology... New EMD's will all sound like GE's now, there will be NO variety anymore, it will all sound the same... (PS I didn't mind the SD70Ace sound as it is 4th generation locomotive)
great video. My dad worked on the section out of Nakina. I grew up there visiting my grandma. This is why I loved trains growing up. I spent many hours watching trains roll through Nakina when i was a kid (and I still do.. lol) The derailment happened at Green Lake, mile 135.5 Caramat sub. A westbound freight hit a washout. Best job I've ever had was repairing these Locomotives. Notch 8 sounds like a jet engine when load testing. Watching the engine jewels tick away in idle with the valve cover open is amazingly soothing after an engine rebuild on a GM. The GE engines are boaring in comparison and a pain in the ass.
Those are in the Prairie region and Nakina is in Ontario region and track gangs generally didn't work in other regions. Armstrong is the division point between them. BTW, Allanwater is one word, not two.
Is that the place named Dunrankin, ON where the cross with the CN logo show on your right? If yes, then I remember that there was a big derailment with the passenger train.

EMD SD75i is KING KING KING! 710 best sounding diesel, love the 2-stroke sound yo! 3rd generation diesels are forever in my heart.
