- Join me for a cab ride on three Canadian Pacific SD40-2's from White River Ontario to Marathon Ontario on the CPR Heron Bay sub. This ride was authorized by CP management, and drove us to the west end on White River yard to ride with the crew of train #431. The first 3-1/2 minutes of the video tape, is from the second unit #6033, of the crew setting out and making up our pickups. Then head down to the mainline. The rest of the video is shot from the lead unit, #5789, is all mainline action on the Heron Bay sub. We catch a glimpse of Lake Superior as we come into Marathon, where our trip comes to an end.
It was a great day, and the CP management, and the crew couldn't have treated us better. Out standing bunch of guys.
As of May 6th 2021, doing some research, the status of these three locomotive's is,
#5789 retired. Rebuilt as a SD30C #5014...
#6033 retired 1/14/2020
#6035 rebuilt into a SD40-3 in 2017
If this cab ride video proves popular, I may post a video of a cab ride on VIA Budd cars between White River and Sudbury Ontario, and one on the coal hauler, Escalante Western in New Mexico.
Thanks for watching, and hope you enjoyed it.
God Bless

I have made over 100 trips on this route but only as a CP employee over 40 years ago. I was a cook and then a sleeping car porter and I never got to see what it looked like from the cab so this was very interesting. But I'll never forget the stench from the paper mill in Marathon - yuk!
yes what a wonderful treat in 1997 I was granted a cab ride in SD40 5522 can't believe it's over 20 years
23.
Time flies. It's been 32 years since I got my one and only cab ride. I remember it like it happened this morning.
Absolutely no way better to turn a combustible liquid into a symphony! Great vid!
Awesome video.SD40-2s are my favorite locomotive.keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more videos.
Thanks Cat Daddy. SD40-2's are up there on my list as well. Should get some new stuff posted in the winter months. There are tons more on my HD. Thanks for watching...
This is such an awesome video! Thanks for uploading it Jack. I am from Milton, Ontario originally. CP and CN both had main lines crossing through town. I used to see these locomotives all the time. Brings back a lot of memories.
Excellent video. Love that EMD 645 turbo sound.
I8
Awesome video. Thanks 👍❤️
Best sounding locomotive ever!!!!
Beats the heck out of those GE's!
Magnificent machine, excellent and privileged job. Congratulations !!! It is unfortunate that here in Brazil it is very difficult to be a locomotive driver, we have very few railways and equipment.
Looks like a great place to live and watch trains. Your a lucky guy. Enjoyed every minute of the video. Thank for the post
Very enjoyable to watch. Thanks for posting!
Good video. I worked as dispatcher for CP from 1995 to 2012. Primarily Nemegos/White River subs. Occasionally worked the Heron Bay and Nipigon subs. Never had a road trip on the Heron bay or Nipigon Subs. So it was good to see some of it after all these years.I might have even dispatched your Budd Car trip between Sudbury and White River. Hope to see it if you post it.
Thanks Brian. It was a treat for sure. I wish I could have remembered the crews name, to thank them again. I have heard that those guys are all retired now. The Budd car ride was spectacular as well. I got a good bit of video on it, Picking up passenger along the line, and throwing their belongings in the RDC4 stuff like that. The crew let us detrain, and film the meets. Some with MLW's still running. Its older VHS stuff, but still neat stuff to see. It was taken September 15, 1993. Thanks again, and thanks for watching...
Rail Traffic Controller.
I grew up in Sudbury and we thought of it as Northern Ontario. I hired on as an Operator in Sudbury in 1956 and was immediately transferred to the Schreiber Division as a spare operator and spare Dispatcher. I had no idea Northern Ontario was so HUGE and there is more west of Thunder Bay to the Manitoba border. CTC was in the works and so rather than wait for the axe to fall, I transferred to the London Ontario Division and enrolled at University of Western Ontario as an intern. I soon fell in love with London, bright lights, beer and girls and never left.
U guys were really movin at one point. Great older engines
He was getting her cranked up in a few spots. I was surprised how fast those three SD40's got that train moving. Thanks for watching...
jackmp294.5™ great ' older" horn also
Their train had a CP imposed speed restriction of 50mph to conserve fuel. Otherwise in places they could have done 60 - the maximum freight train speed on that sub.
Awesome video! I love SD40-2's. Grew up seeing them all the time.
This is fantastic Jack! I love the instructions being given to the rookie engineer.....or was that you in the hot seat?? What a great ride in some classic EMD power. More of these please sir!
Cheers Gregg.
GMD not EMD. Built in London, Ontario.
Love these cab ride videos! Thanks
Thanks paddyg. I'll probably be posting a few more in the next few weeks. Thanks for watching...
Love the sound of the sd40s nothing compares. I almost worked for cp out of schreiber but it was not to be.
Crazy to see how little has changed. Worked the Heron Bay this spring.
Cool video man. Marathon obviously changed a ton, but I was thinking about the tracks, the landscape, and stuff.
Also noteworthy that this was exactly 2 years before the 9/11 attacks. I would have just been starting first grade.
Fantastic video. Now there's something you can't do anymore...unless it's a tourist railroad or something. Thanks for sharing Jack.
For sure NR. The crew would be taken OS on the spot if they have riders along. Thanks for watching...
I got to ride a few ex CP rails in Brasil...on Metric gauge track....all I ever worked on was paducahs and B23-7s...
got to ride some SD40T-2s on metric too...as my cousin was the driver.
I hope they're taking good care of those ex-CP engines! They deserve it! They worked hard up here for decades with very little trouble. Much loved engines!
The video is super, like he was driving in the cab. Thenk you for the video.
Glad you enjoyed the cab ride, and thanks for watching...
Amazing footage!
Thanks NR. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching...
Good video. I think I would support the posting of the Budd car cab ride.
What a great sound......
Amazing video!!! 👍
Thanks David. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching...
This is gold!
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching...
Wow cool video Jack.
Great video Jack!
Fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it CR, and thanks for watching...
Are these SD40-2 Locomotives are still at service on CP
Most, if not all the CP's SD40'2s have been either retired, stored, or rebuilt. I put a run-down on the three locomotives that we had in the "Description". You will see their status in there. Thanks for watching...
Nice to hear that two of them got a rebuilt, in earlier days CP had 500 SD40-2s and now there are 91 SD40-2s on the roster. CP has no interest to rebuild their SD40-2s. They are much more interested in SD70ACU program. I don't think that CP will ever rebuilt their SD40-2s for future use.
@@dhritisamanta4382 look how BNSF CSX and UP still have their SD40-2s still running and BNSF and UP did rebuilt their SD40s recently. CP Rail are just clowns who won’t do anything to their locomotives
@@dhritisamanta4382 and NS which for the past 2-3 years which have been retiring many of their locomotives and worst second company to work for in America, has started to rebuild 15 of their SD40s into SD40-3s
@@detroitdieselseries5071 you are absolutely correct, All class 1 railroads especially CSX keeps SD40-2s running on tracks. According to CP Rail, These locomotives are not much efficient and eco-friendly to be had. I can't understand that why CP is having so many problems with these locomotives? Whereas other railroads do keep their SD40-2s running.
Did CP Rail end the Canadian Canadien dilemna?
Both retired enjoying life.
Being retired is a beautiful thing William. Enjoy every day of it, and thanks for watching...

Do you happen to have more CP Rail footage from across Ontario from the 80s & 90s like from Sault Ste Marie or Sudbury?
Pat, I do have footage from the head end of the VIA Budd cars between White River and Sudbury. I may be putting that up in a few weeks, if this clip draws enough interest. Thanks for watching...
jackmp294.5™ Jack, please do share all of your Headend experiences. They're truly golden.
I will put some more headend stuff up soon. Seems to be a lot of interest. Thanks for watching...
What about Sault Ste. Marie?
Sorry. Nothing in the cab at the Sault Pat...
Cool I love trains !
Why when going into dynamic can't you hear the engine rev up to provide excitation?
CP modified some so that the diesel didn’t speed up until the DB got up to a point in the higher settings.
that was awesome.
So, Jack, any word on some of the footage of the railway crossings in Sault Ste Marie? If so, what streets did you film?
Sorry Pat. I have some pictures at most of those crossing, but only one video of a INCO ore load coming back on the CP Webbwood sub with the INCO stack as a backdrop. Merry Christmas to yah.
GOOD STUFF!
Thanks Treck. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching.
Ce n'est pas de la lenteur Mais de laprudence!!!!Pas deraper dans les virages
43km/huncheminot Us enflagrant delit d,exces deVitesse!!!!!Incroyable!!!!!
Is this sub still around?
It better be! It's the only way to get from Toronto to Winnipeg on CP!
So why are you God Blessing The USA when you are in Canada? The SD40-2 is my favourite locomotive...
You GOT to be kidding! Ahhh, maybe because I live in the USA, and only visit Canada on vacation? But Yah, Love the sounds of the SD40/SD40-2's. So happy that CSX still uses them, and they pass my house almost daily here in Pennsylvania on CSX run through trains. Thanks for watching. BTW, The USA needs all the Blessings it can get, with things that have been going on in this country lately.
@@1jackdk Okay that explains everything...lol.. CP still has some and CN as well. Just not as much as they used to.
Lucky you to catch a ride in one... I always love that mid-range throttle say 4 to 6 that rumble is so perfect...
Be Safe Jackmp294.5, I hope the states can get this vaccination on the right side and everyone comes out safer... thanks for sharing...
@@1jackdk It sure does! Hopefully, things will get better because if they get any worse...

I am talking about the hogger and conductor.
I know the hogger is retired, but didn't know that the conductor was. Another good friend that runs out of Cartier told me that, probably over a year ago.
Surtout sur rails Mouilles!!!!!!!
lol it's my birth date
more in-cab views of the engineer operating the locomotive. dont need his name or see his face just on controls, the instructions diven to the trainee is also very interesting. i cant see subscribing to a site to watch the trees go by
Awesome video Jack!
