I have to do this exact process for my Mustang soon. Last time I did the siphoning by blowing into a tube going into the gas tank to create the pressure for the gas to come out of another tube. I think I'll pick up the siphon pump this time around though. (also it seems subscribers are interested in your rides...)
I have a 1986 4runner with a 22re engine. EFI not carburated. I parked it 4 years ago because the oil pump went out. I put a new one in today i was going to drain the gas but it smelled like gas so i went to start it and it didn't start right away maybe 15 attempts and some brake cleaner spray in the throttle body made it start right away. I'm rebuilding or swaping the engine not sure yet. It's unbelievable how it ran. Not great but not bad either. It did have a full tank of gas because i knew i wasn't going to get to it soon. I drove it around the neighborhood for half an hour and it seemed fine for the next several evenings I'll drive it around close by my house till all the gas is used up. It will definitely need a set of tires as i can feel the flat spots on all tires.
Kudos on the proper disposal, too!! Where I live here some of the Fire Stations have HAZMAT (materials) drop-off, free, you can just bring oil or gas anything there and leave it. But, you gotta leave it, they don't dump it for you! Awesome bro!

Maybe in Cali. In Denver they didn't. I'm a hardcore mechanic, about 45 years of making things run. 18 years ago a customer brought a 1951 Rolls Royce to my shop, hadn't ran in 15 years. Coolest car, it was a limo, steering on right side. I don't waste time with a pump, straight siphon with 6' of garden hose. Took about 20 min. Called recycle they told me to set it out in flat pans and let it evaporate. Don't understand why they call a pump siphon. Biggest thing on siphon is have the one you're siphoning into below the the level of what it's coming out of. And though I just old school,, they make a siphon hose that has the ball you squeeze to get started.
Cool knowing that something like that little pump exists if you need it. I personally just would've used the drain plug and made a mess, and then saved the old gas for my burn pit, but that's just me. You can also create a syphon with just a hose. Put one end in the gas tank, and suck on the other end. Put the other end in a container before the gas hits your mouth. That'll create a syphon and as long as the gas level in the container is lower than the tank it'll keep going.
I had always heard that gasoline "goes bad" so I wanted to put this theory to the test. I dumped some 15 year old gasoline that had been in a rotor tiller onto the ground and lit it up. I was about 22 at the time so I should have known better. The shit pretty much blew up in my face! I never dispose of old gasoline. I just run it through a Mr. Funnel to remove any water and other crap then mix it with fresh gas (25/75 mixture) and burn it in my riding mower. I've never had a problem doing that. I've even mixed it with 5 year old gas! BTW. I am still not convinced gasoline will go "bad" as long as it's stored in an airtight container where it can't evaporate and oxygen and moisture cannot get to it. Some people think gasoline breaks down on a molecular level. I usually buy several gallons of non-ethanol gasoline before hurricane season because it always goes up as soon as someone yells "storm is coming". Right now I am using the last of my gasoline I bought it back in August of 2017 in my lawnmowers that has been sealed in an air tight container. I compared the color between it and some fresh gas I just bought in a mason jar and there is no difference in color or smell. True it will eventually go bad if air and moisture can get to it. I've got a 68 Ford Fairlane that I just got around to fixing that has not been started in about three years and the gas looks just like what you pulled from your truck. My plan is to siphon it out, run it through a Mr. Funnel and mix it with fresh gas and run it in my lawnmower. Despite the fact that both engines have the same C/R (8.5:1). My fear is the fuel has absorbed water and the car may stall on me. It's easier to fix a lawnmower with a water saturated fuel filter in my back yard than a car on the side of the road. Great Looking Truck. Just did this to my 57 Chevy last year after having trouble with the carb. Same thing . add fuel stabil and add gas to it. Had to get the carb rebuilt and drain the gas tank all the way. Now I will run it down then add new gas every year.

Thats called being lazy. Its a great way to clog a fuel injector/carburetor/ fuel pump/fuel filter, don't be lazy get rid of it if its old. This gas had probably been in the tank for over 3-4 years. It will burn however its best to pour out and start fresh.

Why waste fuel, cause pollution, add wear to your drive train and suspension AND use up your valuable life doing all that? Just add new fuel to dilute your old gas, especially "winter" gas which has even more volatiles from the refinery, at least in the north of the country, and use the vehicle normally.
just do it right the first time............grab a wrench and loosen and remove the drain plug on your fuel tank. why go thru all that dancing around when you can just dump it in a big container and then dispose of it legally.
Thanks for sharing my video Jack. I did it this way because I could make less of a mess. I find when I take the drain plug out I get gasoline everywhere. This was much easier to control. Yes it did take days LOL. Also I did dispose of it legally if you watch the video to the end.
Completely unnecessary to replace 6 month old fuel. I have a 2004 SC 281 Saleen Mustang, and it only has 25k miles on her. She still runs great, never had any engine work needed. But oh yeah, she's a Ford, so no wonder. :)
I have a Jag with twin 10-gallon tanks that are nearly full, and has been sitting for 11 years. I'm not looking forward to dealing with it, and especially the maze of fuel lines that are probably full of sludgy varnish.

When the weather warms up I'll run a gallon of something through them, but I haven't decided what yet. I thought they were nearly full but I only got about seven gallons. After a year sitting in your garage you might have water in the bottom of your tank? Did you find any? You can put HEET in there to bind the water to fuel and it should burn through the carburetor...
i have an automatic 2001 VW jetta 2.0 - it sat since december 2021 until now april 2023 mobile mechanic came by and put in a brand new battery, refurbished starter, cleaned up the rusted ground connection from the starter to the chassis or transmission whatever it is the car now cranks, but won't start - he then took off one end of the cold air intake and sprayed something into the engine while i started it up but then it died after 2 seconds the gas is original from probably november 2021 , i have about half a tank he is telling me that probably the fuel pump needs to be replaced any ideas if its just bad gas ? i have 87 octane in there
You need to drain any gas out of carburetor float bowl and spray carb cleaner through jets. Nice truck though. If I were you I'd change out the plug in the gas tank to one that has female square instead of external male square. If something from road bounces up and hits that protuberance, it could cause damage allot harder to fix than just replacing the plug. And you know it will happen at worst possible time.

When I was a little kid, my dad told me to take a milk jug full of oil out in the woods and turn it upside down on the ground. Some other man got on to me for it. haha I just do what I'm told.
When I need to get rid of the gas in my garage bum vehicles, I just drain it into my 5 gallon and transfer a gallon or two of it at a time to my 3/4 full tank Blazer. The old 350 doesnt even notice and I dont have to give my old stinky gas away.
Hmm the gas sat for 200 million years underground and it didn't go bad, but now a year above ground and it does? Ok, I know that isn't quite true the problem is the ethanol (which you shouldn't be running in that truck anyway) and the lighter compounds like the C5 evaporates so you end up with a gas mixture that is somewhat reduced in volume and resembles an old style gasoline prior to lead more closely. Shouldn't be a problem for a 1937. I have the same question every year with my boat and my motorcycles which sit at least 6 months every winter. Never had a problem with just running the old tank out once the snow melts. I do add fuel stabilizer though before putting them away. The boat is a bigger problem than the bikes, it's a 1996, and like most older motors is not designed to run ethanol. It's the rubber components that are the problem, the ethanol can dissolve them. Thus I try and run mostly marine fuel which is not subject to road taxes or ethanol laws and doesn't seem to go bad. It's still expensive though because they have to put actual octane in it not C5 with ethanol or some other additive. Diesel also doesn't go bad, very little light compounds it doesn't really evaporate very quickly. I guess the logic on how to leave the tank has also changed with ethanol, the advice used to be park the tank full so not so much air could get in and bring condensed water, but they are saying now with the ethanol park the thing empty because the ethanol dissolves the water in the air.
That ain't old gas run it I just drained my 68 landcruiser tank the gas was brown not from Rust 25 years it has sat it still ran just by adding more gas
Blake's Garage the gas in my tank I did drain at first the hole tank was layered in varnish when it gets as bad as mine was it can do a lot more then just clog your motor it can stick your valves and blow your motor in a very extreme case but year old gas especially when you added more gas should be fine

The gas in this video when I looked at my gas fill up book was over 4 years old. Not the worst but definitely not something I want to run if I can prevent it fairly easily by draining the system and filling it with fresh gas ⛽️
no need to drain it if its only been a year. i would just keep adding fuel stabilizer to it and or just keep the tank full so theres no oxygen available to it. unless you are storing a car for several years, i would just drive the gas out of it instead of draining it. im willing to bet you can keep gas up to 3 years with stabilizer added every 3 months.

watch videos on taking gasoline, dumping water into it, mixing it up, turning upside down, letting it sit overnight, water sinks down to the bottom absorbing the ethanol and other shit with it, then drain it out, leaving you with gas only

You could have just diluted the old gas with new gas and then drove your vehicle until the old fuel was used up.

might be tougher to do on a more modern car, the filler tubes have roller over prevention that can make it hard to get the hose down yeah?

put a t and a cap on the suction line. Once it starts to pump, remove the cap from the suction and let it flow.

I have a 71 gmc and it set for 9 years and it's pure black and the fule line is clogged.
You gonna have to take it out and clean it out , their might be gas that has turned solid into the tank

Gas does not go bad in 6 months or a year . Truck would have ran just fine on it .

When I need to get rid of the gas in my garage bum vehicles, I just drain it into my 5 gallon and transfer a gallon or two of it at a time to my 3/4 full tank Blazer. The old 350 doesnt even notice and I dont have to give my old stinky gas away.
Hmm the gas sat for 200 million years underground and it didn't go bad, but now a year above ground and it does? Ok, I know that isn't quite true the problem is the ethanol (which you shouldn't be running in that truck anyway) and the lighter compounds like the C5 evaporates so you end up with a gas mixture that is somewhat reduced in volume and resembles an old style gasoline prior to lead more closely. Shouldn't be a problem for a 1937.
I have the same question every year with my boat and my motorcycles which sit at least 6 months every winter. Never had a problem with just running the old tank out once the snow melts. I do add fuel stabilizer though before putting them away. The boat is a bigger problem than the bikes, it's a 1996, and like most older motors is not designed to run ethanol. It's the rubber components that are the problem, the ethanol can dissolve them. Thus I try and run mostly marine fuel which is not subject to road taxes or ethanol laws and doesn't seem to go bad. It's still expensive though because they have to put actual octane in it not C5 with ethanol or some other additive.
Diesel also doesn't go bad, very little light compounds it doesn't really evaporate very quickly.
I guess the logic on how to leave the tank has also changed with ethanol, the advice used to be park the tank full so not so much air could get in and bring condensed water, but they are saying now with the ethanol park the thing empty because the ethanol dissolves the water in the air.

Blake's Garage the gas in my tank I did drain at first the hole tank was layered in varnish when it gets as bad as mine was it can do a lot more then just clog your motor it can stick your valves and blow your motor in a very extreme case but year old gas especially when you added more gas should be fine
Tevin Smith ok good that didn't come across in the first message sound like you just splashed gas on old varnished gas a called it good. The gas in this video when I looked at my gas fill up book was over 4 years old. Not the worst but definitely not something I want to run if I can prevent it fairly easily by draining the system and filling it with fresh gas ⛽️

no need to drain it if its only been a year. i would just keep adding fuel stabilizer to it and or just keep the tank full so theres no oxygen available to it. unless you are storing a car for several years, i would just drive the gas out of it instead of draining it. im willing to bet you can keep gas up to 3 years with stabilizer added every 3 months.
Just burn the old gas in a newer car add a gallon at a time to a nearly full tank will burn with no damage
