  • If you have an old car that has been sitting for years I bet the fuel tank is rusted beyond functional use. Here is what I did with a fuel tank that sat in the elements for over ten years. The methods I used were successful and the tank was able to be used again in this Eagle Talon!

    That protective case really provided a lot of protection from rust.

    Wish I wouldn't have crushed my last 1g with a good tank, I'd have gladly donated it even driven it down to Regina for ya.
    Muriatic acid works fantastic, just do not let it sit over night. I did that with a 1g bumper bracket......there was zero left of it in 24 hours because it had no paint on it. Have you ever tried plating anything Dean? would keep that tank cherry inside for years again.

      You crushed a 1g ? Please don’t tell me you crushed the fuel pump sending unit. 😀
      I have done plating but only hardware pieces. Nothing large like a fuel tank. That would take some voltage for sure.

    I’ve been down this road before with a couple of vehicles. You shouldn’t rule out going to a radiator shop to acid wash your tank and then seal it. It was cheaper and took less time than the DIY method in my case.

      Locally I don’t think any of our rad shops would dunk a fuel tank unfortunately. I did look locally for a shop that did fuel tanks and struck out. Your method is one of the best and easiest ways to do it for sure. Thank you for letting the group know.

    I took my tank to a place that does a process with coating the inside and outside to prevent rust. It wasn't cheap but with no aftermarket options that fit in the OE spot and no good ones nearby it was the best option. gas tank renu is the company, they have a website you can check out.

      Thanks for sharing this information with all of us. What a great option to restore a tank.

      @@SlippingTime absolutely, it definitely isn't cheap but these cars are older. I used your timing belt videos to do my first one. Got it running after a long few years doing brakes, axles, driveshaft, 4 bolt swap, took it out for it's first drive only to have the PS rack blow up and send fluid everywhere 😞🤣
      It's on stands again and after the holidays I'll get back at it.

      @@ts6141 sounds like you have most of the kinks ironed out of it. Take a break and then get back at it as you say. You will have it in the road in no time at all.

    I just finished up a Mazda 323 GTX tank. Set for 12 years with a quarter tank in it, heavily rusted and thick varnish. All I did was drain, remove and fill with 4 gallons white vinegar and tap water. Capped all the hose & sender openings and rotated the tank once a day. It sat full of vinegar for 9 days but when drained was bare metal clean. Rinsed with baking soda & water, dried and WD40 sprayed. Total cost was $43.

    I went through this a couple months ago, but I took the tank to a radiator shop $400 after I got my 1992 Talon running again

    You know when you watch a video, and you can smell/taste what's going on? I bet you do now. And then you turn your head on instinct when all of the crusty bits start falling of the car and into the camera (i.e. your eyes?) You've just created a DSM VR experience without a headset.

    Evaporust FTW!! Great stuff and it works in the coolant system as well. That is one of the worst tanks I've seen.

    • @SlippingTime
      @SlippingTime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, evaporust is working well. I am still cycling it through the tank, but it is getting it all. Good to know it works on coolant systems too!

    Such an under-appreciated hidden gem of a channel! All your content is top notch. I'm about to clean out my 92 GSX gas tank again cause I didn't neutralize the acid after I washed it out, also didn't fog it, so it's white and rusty inside now.. Oh well, should come out easy this time

      Thank you so much for the compliment.
      Rust is the enemy in these tanks. I hope someone manufactures them again for us. Until then, we do what we have to get them in good condition again.

    Just from the title alone, you know it’s gonna be a discussing video cant imagine the smell in this case. that was some old ass fuel and she’s gone done corroded all inside that fuel tank like when your were cleaning it god you just hear all the bits moving about. Changing the sending unit and everything is always such a pain in the ass with gas tanks. Especially smaller ones just makes you wanna cut it in half and weld it back together which is a terrible idea but God it’s such a pain getting to it, tearing it out of the car cleaning it fixing it, and etc then reinstalling it with all the lines and everything gosh darn Lee damit ya know. But that’s some excellent good work Thank you for sharing this with us always happy to slip some time with you much appreciation. Love you lots man Hope you’re taking care❤️

    • @SlippingTime
      @SlippingTime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, yes cutting it in half did cross my mind. My hope is just like the old muscle cars the time has now come for companies to make new tanks for 90’s icon cars. There truly is a market for it now with the age of them.

    • @YUM_DustDSM4G63
      @YUM_DustDSM4G63 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SlippingTime I’ve got a stock pile of them in the back of this 1993 eclipse GSX I’m trying to build. Only about five of them but there’s totally a market for them, someone needs to build them to exact spec but replicated in new material but it Hass to look the exact same too. Now thinking that’s totally a company idea and or idea for your company Thanks man I’m gonna remember that when my wedding business gets up and running💡💡💡
