You’re right in saying that there are plenty of games where horror can be achieved purely through tension and atmosphere, but let’s be honest... I can tell you what really happened with that Wal-Mart cake story. Mom gives someone money to go pick up the cake. Person steals the display cake and pockets the money. Person is shocked to learn display cakes are just frosted blocks of styrofoam, and is now forced to either admit they are a thief or blame Wal-Mart.
It would be funny if the person who asked to remove the jump scares was trying to play fnaf
