Your video quality is looking a lot better than your last video, man! I can definitely tell you're putting in the work to up your production quality. Awesome. Looking forward to more videos.
Hello ModernHam, When I am trying to flash my Quansheng UV-K5/K6 my PC is not recognizing it at all. My PC usually prompts me with a sound when I plug something into it, and I have nothing. -H
That is so awesome! I have been wanting to put a radio up high or in a tree with a good antenna and not have losses do to a coax cable and this looks like a great implementation! Thankyou!
You could make your CAT control cable from some CAT6. Tie some cordage around that radio and throw it over the tree. You can do it! Post pictures when you're done.
Will putting it higher even work? What exactly the does do aside from make it harder to work with? I'm not trying to be mean or condescending, truly. I am new to this stuff, but my understanding is that radio waves travel at the speed of light and the quality of their signal wouldn't be obstructed by anything if not put in a tree or be received noticably sooner because of being put up.
@@BadgerScrub honestly, my comment was complete sarcasm. The idea of putting the radio in a tree with a super long custom control cable is not practical. The smarter option would be to have an antenna adapter from the SMA to a BNC or PL259 and then run a bit of coax to a better V/UHF antenna in a tree or mounted higher.
Pretty cool feature. I just picked one of these up as a cheap scanner to receive a certain band for planes at airshows. That's the only reason I got it. I didn't realize how much you could modify though. Just got my Extra so this is going to be interesting lol
I wasn't going to get a quansheng, but this makes me want to do this lil project.. Pretty cool.. It would be really cool, if you could use your computer for the mic and audio with just the programing cable.. Would be really cool if you could do ft8 or sstv with it aswell..

The computer handles the digital part and the link to the internet. - Who knows what else? Can't wait to see what comes of this.....
@@ModernHam no it can't the usb cable is for data only. The audio has to be routed through an audio cable to either a PC or a set of external amplified speaker(s).
I wonder if there will be a way to do the same type of interfacing with the Baofeng radios that are equipped with GPS. I am particularly interested in having a computer interface with the GPS data. It would be great to have that data displayed on Google maps or some other mapping software.
Very interesting advancements, would be great to try but the links you provided take you to the site, but nothing can be downloaded. I clicked on the Firmware you indicated, but it just opens up the same page. Any help on this?
Try it with an AIOC cable. The author is getting one and is going to try and make it work with AIOC if it does not already. Also I've got Ham Made parts working on cables.
Do digital modes (e.g. direwolf) work OK over it? Does combination of audio plus serial connection and custom firmware add any distortions which would make demodulation problematic?
look at KD8CEC Quansheng firmware... unfortunately it's not written to work with the Dock software but you could modify the firmware if you have the ability.
This software is a firmware itself on the radio with a PC App. It would work with egzumer if someone were to combine the two which I doit there's space for.
if you have the ability to rewrite the firmware then yes. The flash memory on the Quansheng can easily be upgraded to 2Mb and even 4Mb by changing the EEPROM/adding a 2nd EEPROM. LOL easily upgraded if you can do the minute soldering work.
Thanks for sharing this, works great. ladies voice seemed to disappear though, was wondering if you or anyone knows how to get it back, can't seem to find it on the menu. thanks
I love the idea that there is so much we can do with the UVK-58 radio, im hungry to know more, but everything you did online and get files for did not work for me. Files didn't auto download, nothing extracted. Maybe explain why it was easy for you and tons of other people like me have an impossible time with this.
for receive only unless you physically modify the Quansheng by removing or bypassing the VHF bandpass filter and replacing it with an 11M bandpass or HF lowpass filter. It's a lot of work and difficult because the parts are very small. Then you have deleted the VHF capability so keep that in mind.
@@ModernHam not actually. not as the firmware is written now. KD8CEC firmware does though. but that's not compatible with the Dock software version yet unless as you said, someone combines the firmware.
If you have just the programming data cable plugged in by itself then you wont hear any audio because the audio jack is not passing the audio. If you make the custom adapter cables as the Dock software author advises on the Github page then you can hear audio through whatever hand speaker mic, amplified speaker or PC you plug it in to.
It's a shame push-to-talk wasn't implemented in software. My computer microphone is so much better than anything on a Chinese handy talkie and it would have removed the need for the butchered cable. Definitely a feature someone should ask Quansheng to make available in a future release. These guys are going to crush Baofeng if they can continue to innovate and release. Just integrating the community hacks would take them to a new level.

Probably one of the worst how to do it videos I ave ever come across, have I got Git hub... NO, trying to follow your instructions, impossible, you are assuming people are conversant with all this, if we were we would not be looking to something like this to try and do it..... terrible.
Sorry you couldn't figure it out. Maybe try asking about what part you are held up on. There are dozens of comments here from people who were able to get it up and running after watching, you could try asking one of them for help. Software that is cutting edge like this often requires a bit of technical background, so you may struggle without a foundation. There are also other videos on the same topic, but you will probably struggle just the same, as this is more of a skill issue on your part. After all, something has to be different between yourself and everyone else here right? Nah, it's probably my explanation.
Thanks for the share and shout-out, I really appreciate the exposure and support.
I appreciate open source innovation! Thanks for sharing this with the rest of us.
It's nice to have you explain all that's required for docking . thanks for the cool approach

All new radios should have features like this firmware with the radios. They really need to get with the times in hardware and software, etc.

Will the docking software show the band scope of a modded radio? thanks
the dock software works with the Dock author's firmware. I don't think it is intended for the chip changed modified radio.
