- A very basic beginners guide, 'getting started' and listening to your first frequency with a Quansheng UV K5, K5 (8), K6 or UV 5R plus etc....
Please remember: Do NOT transmit of frequencies that your not licenced or permitted to use.
Although these radios are fine to receive, they are NOT intended to be used to transmit on VHF marine, Airband or CB frequencies ect..

Thanks for the informative video. I am a complete noobie and I just decided which radio to get. You presented the info without the incessant babble listing channels and frequencies that do nothing but mesmerize the novice.
Thanks for watching, really glad you enjoyed it and found it useful 👍
Thank you Ben after using these radios for a long time I take my knowledge of them for granted it's good you show newbies step by step as everyone has to start as the begining and maybe stops them asking repeat questions on Facebook
Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching 👍
As a new radio user, this was right up my street. Subscribed immediately. Thanks, Ben!
Thanks for the Sub, glad you found it useful 👍
Great video as very helpful. Just after getting one of these radios and already getting to like it a lot.
Glad you enjoyed it and found it useful. Thanks for watching 👍
I've waited a LONG TIME for this video! Thank you!!!
Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful 👍
@@m7frs272 I am 70 years old and got this for Christmas from my son. Apart from the obvious FM I have no idea how to use this thing. So a series of videos like this going through all the functions would be invaluable to me (at least).
Glad you found it useful, thanks for watching and enjoy the radio 👍
am on the river Humber! love using this radio to listen to the shipping traffic alongside using marine traffic on the net is great..
Perfect 👌 Thanks for watching 👍
I'm near Selby and the Ouse. What frequencies do I need for shipping traffic please?
My quansheng should arrive in a few days and I must admit I'm a bit daunted by all the options, but was pleased to find this beginners guide.
Hi @@martinwray7001 Glad you found this useful. Please check out my other videos featuring the Quansheng radios. As for VHF marine frequencies, you'll probably find activity on the following channels: ch9 (swing/rail bridges) ch 14 port ops, 16 calling/distress. Others that might be worth listening to in your area: 10, 11, 17, 37 (M1) 73, 74, 77 & 80. Do a Google search for the frequencies for those channels. Good luck and have fun 👍
Thanks very much.Very useful
Thanks for watching, glad you found it useful 👍
Just found your channel and love it, just got myself a quansheng and it’s great to see you go through it easily . So thanks for your help and I’ll keep watching Alan from Leighton buzzard near Luton, I watch FRED in the shed as-well, who’s great to see how things work, but it’s great to know how too people do things, because someone always comes up with something first, anyway thanks again and I’ll keep my ears on 💯🇬🇧👍
Thanks Alan, really pleased you enjoyed it and found it helpful. 👍

hi Ben, thanks for doing this video, may i recommend doing a complete noob series to get us all upto speed - ham mentor like at the clubs, i would especially find this invaluable as i work nights when my local clubs in gloucestershire hold meetings! i bought a book to help me learn about radio and no where in the 500 pages does it say what on earth "Ham" even stands for, but it is a good read and informative hehe!
I second this
New user here many thanks i was struggling to figure out but learned a lot thank you
Really pleased you found it helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
hopefully a few vids on operating the scanner and other features of the alternative softwares... great to start with the basics thou..
Thanks for watching, hopefully some of my previous videos will already explain that 👍
Thank you 😊
Thank You❤
Thanks for watching 👍
For an airport freq baseline, look up your airport’s Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) frequency, which is a continuous broadcast service of information related to the airport for incoming flights. In the U.S., this radio does not always pick up National Oceanic and Administration (NOAA) channels right out of the box. You may need to flash it with egzumer or other firmware before you can use NOAA channels as a baseline of the radios performance.
Great advice and information 👍 Thanks for watching 👍
There you go first time on and a 👍up
Good one
Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for the video. Do I need a license to use this radio? Thanks in advance
Good question! That really depends what you intend to use it for. You don't need a license to own one or if you just want to use it as a radio scanner just for listening. If you want to transmit on the frequencies it's intend for then you need an amateur radio (Ham) license. I know some people may use them on the UK PMR 446 license free frequencies, however that's not legal as the power output is too high and the antenna has to be fixed, unlike the antenna on the Quanshengs which can be removed/replaced.
Does anyone have a link for Ben‘s video on how to store channels in the memory, please
7 minutes 30 seconds into this video is where I described how to save a frequency. th-cam.com/video/kZ1i7YP05hQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=SYO_57UCsZ4jcGLx

Is there anywhere I can go for really basic advice on getting started, I've joined a couple of facebook groups but even glancing at their pages it all appears to be about firmware upgrades and how to get football on its monitor screen, all I want to do (like others here) is just listen in to local radio traffic
Hope you found this video helpful. What else would be useful to include in future videos?
@@m7frs272 I thought this video would help but from start of video for example mine doesn't start-up with welcome message and as a novice I don't know what VFO mode is so I was hoping you might know a beginners channel, I've not yet had a peep out of this since it arrived
Is the noaa frequency only for USA or can we receive in the uk
USA only I'm afraid. Thanks for watching 👍
When you say, "with a different antenna and an upgrade, you can listen to CB but cannot transmit" Is it because you will be incapable of doing it or you are not allowed to do it?
Basically, yes The Radio isn't capable of effectively transmitting on 27Mhz. See this video for a more detailed description: th-cam.com/video/BE2Y7V2tGMM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3Rvu-bUxaAuKRr_d
Can anybody help with the settings this needs to be on so when I put in frequencies they will work my settings are all over the place
Thanks for watching, try these videos to see if they are any help:

Can this radio be used on the 4 Ham band ( 70MHz) using TX ?
Unfortunately not, no. The harmonics are a poor out of the designed operating frequencies. Please see this video:
th-cam.com/video/BE2Y7V2tGMM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=oOATlO3k4WSEoKQE
That is helpful. Can you listen to CB on these?
With a different antenna and upgraded firmware you can listen to CB but you cannot transmit. Thanks for watching 👍
@@m7frs272 oh thanks. I got a Nagoya 711 and I was wondering about that.
Will this actually work as a standard CB Radio?
No! Unfortunately not. It will receive but no good on transmit on 27Mhz See my other video: th-cam.com/video/BE2Y7V2tGMM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5kVtGBskSgKVlMoq
Hi there I was thinking about getting one of these radios one of my coworkers use one at work to talk to the other coworkers on the walkie-talkies around the building but I see that it can do a lot more. What kind of services can this pick up? I see that it pick up boating and air traffic. Can it do fire and police frequencies as well I know it does ham, but does it do anything else can do CB radio frequencies at all just curious of what all it really can do before purchasing. Thanks for any help.
Hi, with regards to taking to you coworkers, it's obviously possible but depending on where you are in the world will depend on what type of license you need and/or/if it's legal in your country. The Quansheng is primarily aimed at ham radio (amateur radio) operators but it has the ability to transmit/receive on business/private (PMR,GMRS,FRS etc..) frequencies. Yes it will receive airband and marine wherever you are in the world and will regards to emergency service, again that depends where you are. Here in the UK emergency services use encrypted digital radio (or TETRA) so not able to listen on anything. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching 👍
Ben.
Oh, and it can receive but not transmit on 27Mhz CB frequencies.
One thing I'll say , You get more box than a 1300 pound £££££ iPhone 15 pro max
