Putting an awning or the y62 Patrol was the main factor behind putting the roof rack on the Patrol. Now don’t get me wrong I love my OZtrail gazebos but they take up too much space and the amount of times I needed shelter and didn’t have one packed was starting to affect my adventures. So, it was time to permanently mount an awning to the big y62 patrol.
As much as I love the idea of a 270 degree awning we unfortunately don’t have the clearance in the garage to fit one. We decided to go with a 23 Zero Raven 2500 awning. This is a straight out 2.5 meter by 2.5 meter awning. But it’s so much more than a basic awning.
The 23 Zero awnings are a slimline design keeping them as sleek as possible. Also it is a black storage bag so it blends in nicely with the black flat rack. Most 4wd awning brands have big obnoxious logos on them that stand out like dogs balls. The 23 Zero logo on the Raven awning bag is probably one of the more subtle ones around. The cover is made of 600gsm laminated PVC with a good quality SBS #10 self-repairing coil zip. As far as looks and being compact the 23 Zero Raven awning is the best option.
Construction. The 23 Zero Raven is really well designed and built. The main body is a one piece aluminium extrusion design making it stronger than others available and this helps keep the size small. Every hinged knuckle is made of polyamide flexible hinges this gives flex in all the poles preventing cracking and failure of the main aluminium body.
The canvas is a tough 290gsm polycotton rip stop canvas. The underside is also coated in 23 Zero’s unique LST coating (light suppression technology) this effectively defuses sunlight and UV rays from passing through the awning canvas or entering the inside of the tent. It seems to keep it much cooler than other awnings I have used in the past. It is also polyurethane coated ensuring abrasion, UV and mould resistance.
The 23 Zero Raven 2500 comes with mounting brackets, pegs and guide ropes. Everything weighs in at just under 11kg. As far as quality goes I cannot fault it. They are definitely worth checking out if you are in the market for a 4wd awning.

I have the same one here in the states called the bushman awning and I absolutely love it. We currently have 10 inches of snow on the ground with more coming and it has lasted through some harsh snow storms. Waiting to receive the room attachment for it.

Awning come up well, I guess you have the option of side walls as well, and the weight saving of the bulkier 270 unit, nice work

That is definitely another down point on 270s they are heavy ✌️

Great camp ideas! What do you do if you want to go exploring in your 4x4, after you have setup?

We don’t generally set up until we’re ready to camp to be honest and it’s very rare we stay in one place more than a night

It’s just 2.1 it’s tight there is maybe 10mm clearance in it

No I won’t! 🤣🤣 I wouldn’t fit in the garage with one so it wasn’t on the cards unfortunately. The tailgate does an ok job in the rain for the back

@@HappyGoTravel , you didn't think about the quick release brackets and a 270? I have the same problem with garage height and am thinking this is the only way I can still garage the big girl

I do a lot of spontaneous trips and unless I planned it I wouldn’t have the awning. With quick release brackets I’d have the same issue as carrying a gazebo. I would never have it when I needed it 🤣

They are guy ropes, not “guide” ropes.
