Perfect comparison. It tells me to keep my Montage and not upgrade, I bought mine for 1 607 usd second hand (barely used, plastic was still on), and in Sweden the new 61 key version cost a whopping 4179 USD, meeeeh - yeah, no.
Thank you for saving me $3,200. I was going to upgrade to the M6 from my Montage 6. But I'm not spending that money on something that has so many of the same presets. I use an Elektron Analog Heat for the inserts on my Audient iD44, so I have no trouble beefing up any sounds on any keyboards and drum machines I already own. I know the M series has so much more to offer. But it's just not for me right now like I thought it would be.
I sold recently my old Montage7. Comparing same sounds of course it's terribly difficult to find gaps. And TH-cam compresses audio files... I am interested to evaluate MontageM if and when VST version will be ready. If software versione will be perfect I will probably buy one.
Thank you for this outstanding comparison. In my opinion the Montage M, has better converters, so the upper and lower ends of the frequency spectrum are better represented. In a way, this makes the M, sound harsher and sometimes, not as enjoyable as the non M, which highlights more of the midrange. Quieter sounds - will sound better on the M, than the non M, cos of Fletcher Munsen curve in our hearing, while punchier sounds will sound a bit harsh and distorted on the M, than the non M, but the difference is not night and day. I prefer the accuracy of the M version. Of course it should be possible to add an EQ to shave off a bit of the high end and low end, if one wanted to emulate the non M version, on a mixer. Of course the M version has the new ANX engine, better polyphony, and some new samples and a better editing workflow. Clearly the only reason not to have a Montage M is if you cannot afford one.
Yamaha pulled the 'better converter' scam when the modx came out. But now everyone agrees they sound the same. Of course you hear a better sound, that is how you will justify getting ripped off. Sadly TH-cam mangles all sound so your imagination is running wild.
just thought the same. Will buy a NI Kontrol 61 for polyphonic at and use diva or Arturia / CherryAudio / GForce PLugins which seems way better than ANX .. Wanted to buy it, but wo Poly AT M6 and M7 are way overpriced ..
Agree with you I still have the Vintage Yamaha rs7000 as the master then I slave the Modx both sound fantastic together. Especially plugging the rs7000 into modx effects settings is awesome!!!
@@steffenfriedle3254I highly recommend against the Kontrol ecosystem. I just returned my second Kontrol S61 MK3 due to it crashing, failed updates and constant freezing and loss of sound. Very unreliable! 😬
@@dave3987 then that would defeat the purpose of this entire video. The point is to leave both instruments as flat as possible (EQ) and from there listen to the difference in sound.
For the imported sounds from previous montage, I can hear difference on some Fm-x sounds. Of course you can have all your work ready to go with new M and if you want you can improve all the sounds imported with new engine, waveforms, sounds, partials on awm2… :)
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB Sounds to me that the older Montage has less reverb and more a dry sound. Might be interesting to turn off all effects unless that was already done.
I think it boils down if existing 1st gen montage users are pushing the limits of the instrument. Most of the improvements for montage m are under the hood and in some cases affect the sound design. For instance, CFX grand is now 18 elements on the montage m opposed to 4. Huge deal? Eh, not so much for me. But, Me coming over from modx to montage only makes sense to go montage m obviously. I suffered from huge polyphony issues on the modx. I feel like all my polyphony issues would have been solved with the 1st gen montage. I will in every way take try to take advantage of the montage m’s power. Excited for the DAW functions/midi assignment capabilities because I use a lot of soft synths live. 😅
Nice video. I tried the old and the new Montage at MusicStore. I would have bought the M if available at the store just because of the better sound. But spending so much money for waiting 3 month to the arrival is not tempting at all. I didn‘t buy it due to that reason and seeing this video makes me feel good. You can hear the difference when playing the synth solo over good speakers or headphones. However, I doubt that this difference is as obvious when putting other stuff (drums from my Digitakt and synth sounds from my Waldorf Iridium) besides the Montage. Sooner or later we record everything and start mixing. In a final step everything is converted into MP3. No way that this initial sound advantage is still audible in the final mix when putting lots of instruments together and uploading it to TH-cam or other platforms that compress the audio files. I guess this is also the reason why both sound similar in this TH-cam video: Heavyly compressed audio file. That both sound the same is therefore a no brainer and not a 100 percent true. The M sounds better because of higher resolution but of course this advantage must disappear when compressing the file in TH-cam. The big advantage of M is the VST integration but I have the Montage to play without computer as it is more fun playing without looking into a computer screen. Anyway I am very happy about this video. I did not think about this by myself. Thanks a lot, I am feeling much better now with my old Montage.
If you do your 'test' 'blindly' no one could tell you which is which. In short, no listener who consumes songs on Spotify, etc. will really care about this. Pure Marketing 2023
I’ll say this, the montage M is a masterpiece. Don’t know why Yamaha took until now to make it, but it will knock your socks off. You can’t judge any sound over TH-cam , the subtlety is lost because of TH-cam’s audio/video compression algorithm. iF you can tell a difference on TH-cam and your wearing good headphones , you can bet it’s a huge difference ! If you can tell which is better over your phone speaker on TH-cam … forgetaboutit!
@@DG-ss1gc Yes, the EX5 20 years ago was also a masterpiece of the time but at that time a computer was not capable of handling sounds like a Yamaha could, but that has now changed. I just wanted to tell you that I can create with plugins today, sounds that not even the Montage M can imagine and I can create all the sounds that the Montage brings, that's the difference. Furthermore, the sound is so, so good and polished, that it stops being interesting. Yamaha has lost the 'organic' in its sounds that it had until the SY-85. Then it was standardized and we got to this point. In any case, there are many fans who love their sounds and I obviously respect that. Greetings!
So I did what you said. Put my headphones in my PS5 controller and went to another room. If I have to strain to hear a difference, then I don’t need it. I already have the MODX8+. I’m good.
There is something else worth mentioning. If you wanted to purchase an expensive keyboard synth the choice wouldnt be montage OR montage m. The original isn't sold new anymore.
So basically no big difference in sound quality comparing basic sounds. This video demonstrate that part of hardware, that is reponsible for sound signal path is more or less equal quality on both. The new m is a bit darker(warmer) and rounder sounding, but this is nitpicking. Where new m is really step forward is in processing power, meaning OS is more responsive and in better workflow. But if you don't need it, new board is hardly justified for so much more money.
There are definitely some configuration differences in some of the performances,... the stereo image isn't as wide on the Montage M on "TX816 E. Piano", and it's completely mono on "DX7 Full Tines", vs. the original Montage being stereo on that one. Not really a fair comparison on those patches... wonder what the deal is on those as far as programming?
Hi Jim! I’ve created all my sounds on “old” montage and imported my full backup into the new M. And the sounds are exactly the same on both machines with no changes.. but some of the sounds are not exactly the same! The point of this video is: do you really need the new M??
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB gotcha. I think where it becomes compelling is that the new one adds a whole bunch of new features, obviously. The main draw for me is the AN-X engine, increased flash ROM for user samples, vastly improved OS, and poly aftertouch on the 8X. All of that together makes it the one synth to rule them all for a gigging player... quite the monster!
@@JimDaneker, I've had the M8x for a couple weeks. Prior to moving to the Nord Stage 3 and then Stage 4, I was using a Montage 7 for gigs. Over time (my keyboard roll was expanding)... I grew dissatisfied with the OG Montage Organs, Pianos, and especially Analog type synth sounds. With the Pianos, part of that was the unweighted keys. On Foreigner's "Feels Like The First Time", there's the descending synth melody in the bridge. For that, I wanted to use a Moog'ish mono-synth sound. On the OG Montage (using AWM2), the articulation of the Filter and Note Priority were not completely accurate. To get Filter articulation closer to what I wanted, I had to leave the sound set to polyphonic. The AN-X certainly addresses these types of issues. The AN-X Filters (to my ears) sound a bit generic... but it's a major step forward vs. using AWM2. Being able to have up to 128 Elements in a single Part... is extremely flexible (especially with the numerous trigger options). I've already sampled the Stage 4's B3 organ drawbars/percussion... and assembled those into a single Part. The Faders are acting like 8 drawbars, the 1' drawbar is assigned to the first Knob. Percussion, note on/off click, and Rotar noises are each assigned to Knobs. While not exactly like using the Stage 4, it certainly feels more like that (more realtime control/feedback) than the OG Montage. Compared to the Stage 4's 1GB, the M8x's near 4GB space for User Samples is certainly appealing. The new keyboard feels great... as does the poly-aftertouch. Aftertouch is one of the best feeling/responding I've experienced (poly or channel). Only down side to M8x is the size and weight. It's HUGE and weighs 62 pounds. M8x is IMO a major step forward. It's the closest we have to Kontakt in a hardware instrument.
The midi channel were fixed on the Montage and from what I read we can change them now on Montage M….so just this is enough for me As they sound very good….
Yamaha uses new knobs on the Montage M. What is your feeling regarding this change? do you prefer the old ones, the new ones? or both are similar, just the design is new? The old Yamaha knobs (that we can find on almost all of their synths) are very good and even 20 years later they are still in good shape. I am not sure the new ones will remain OK for so long... what do you think? thanks
The new model are taller but with a flat surface, the grip is exactly the same.. now they are much more similar to the design of Super Knob. Both design works well, so no problem 😉
Thank you for this comparation! We have previous Montage 6 and 7,and want to buy new seria M,so please let us know what news about arpeggios and is it possible to load our live settings users, etc.from Montage 6 into New Montage M 6? Thank you!
The Montage sounds more digital to my ears, as in less nice converters. In a music production I'd add a plugin that adds even harmonics to make it sound warmer. The upper montage already sounds warm and balanced.
When comparing the same sounds on each you won't hear any difference they sound the same, same if you compare it with a modx awm2 and fm sounds are exactly the same but once you start using the new ANX engine is where you get a totally different mix in the new M series.
Yes and also all the expanded awm2, but this is not the point of this demo.. we all know that you can do much more with the new M, yes of course.. but a Montage 6 now is 2000€ cheaper than M6.. so the point is: do you really need the other features? do you have to pay 2k more? Existing sounds are the same on both instruments? I know that if you use 128 partials with awm2 and add also an-x old Montage can’t do the same.. I use Montage since 2017 🙂
Yeah true I compared also with my Montage and really your not missing anything with the original M sound wise, I am sure the only draw back to the original is the continued improvements and updates you will receive with the new M series.
If you have good ears there is difference between the Modx, Montage and Montage M. But most users won’t hear this. It’s exactly the same as listening to a CD player with modest off the shelf converters and a highend product with super converters. If yor listening gear is not on par, very few will be able to tell the difference
@@mrdali67 Even with all the high end gear, sound wise the difference is minimal and minimal to some is not worth the upgrade, I can see if it is a big difference then it's worth it,
@@jbeliz I fully agree. The difference from eg the Modx and (old) montage is negiglable to a point at where I’d doubt anyone will be able to hear on a mix wether a sound is recorded from either of them
A much bigger different than this demo showed when using new sound patches designed to make use of the new features, instead of using the same patches that existed on the old model. "No big difference in sound" as this demo shows is misleading people.
@@classicarcadeamusementpark4242 probably true......i haven't tested yet..i only said what i heard from this video with monitors.. maybe it's the way it has been recorded as well..
maybe is because this is not a video of: this is what M can do and the old Montage not! :) this is how they compare with the same imported sounds (and old Montage users surely want to know if their sounds can be better or the same into the new Montage M). Want to hear the new sounds (AN-X and others) of the new M? more dedicated videos are currently in the working
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB In your defense, I only read the title. But as I looked at your description today, I see you explained that a bit. However, I'd recommend changing the title, because most viewers will only see the title, and the title is misleading even if the fine details in the description explain the point of the video. Many people like me won't immediately read the description. I have a MODX, and feel the regular Montage is great too with or without the M upgrades. But there noteworthy upgrades there that will affect sounds specifically made to take advantage of them.
Yamaha understood the assignment: never kill the winning team! The sounds are very similar from what I can hear through YT, with some very minor difference in lows and highs.
Read the description, this is a comparison between imported sounds created with Montage OG, the new M it’s far superior as sounds, engines, memory and so on ;) surely worth the upgrade! After 7yrs of ownership of OG Montage, and the new model since october 2023, I’m really happy with the new M
So very close! The Montage M appears to have the slightest pinch more volume (or it could just be the key action is slightly different, maybe even due to the higher position of the M synth and therefore triggering velocities slightly more than the Montage!?) I do notice the tiniest bit more fullness/possibly warmth (at times) on the Montage M, but barely noticeable hearing them back to back... Again this could be due to the keybed action &/or position being different and triggering slightly differently on the Montage M. If so, then it would have been better if you just played back MIDI sequencing from a DAW so that it was the exact, equally played notes and velocities..! Either way it is quite inconsistent between the two synths since velocities, amplitude vel & filter vel could be coming into play. The playing between the two synths is too inconsistent to call this and to truly tell the difference! When you were playing the CFX on both & doing the same scale run down the keys at one point near the beginning, I noticed that certain notes that were more pronounced on the Montage (higher velocity attack) were less pronounced on the Montage M, and vice-versa with other notes... The true test would be to use the same MIDI sequencing track, ensure the volumes are the same, and use a Spectrum Analyzer effect in a DAW (displaying it close up, full screen & hi-def) to show a note from each to see if the SA curve changes at all, and then clear the Spectrum Analyzer screen and have a chord play via the same MIDI sequencing. Using the sequencer would at least allow us to hear any difference in warmth & clarity that might not even show on a spectrum analyzer...
The new M have a little bit more sound depth and overall gain, many sounds are exactly the same. Some sounds have more difference (probably some FM-X sounds) Of course this comparison is based on the existings sounds available for Montage (preset and my custom sounds) New M have more sounds, new an-x (very powerful engine btw) and more feature. The point of this comparison is: do you really need the new M? Or an “old” Montage can give you what do you need?
Totally Agree. The Montage M sounds louder. But otherwise there's not a large difference between the sounds demoed. One would not really hear the difference when playing live with a band - I will keep my Montage 7 for now. For the extra features the Montage M has, one could simply venture into VSTs .... paired-up with a Korg Keystage!
Ottimo video!!
Does anyone know if the montage can connect to my stereo through Bluetooth? So I can have the sound of the board come out the speakers… (As opposed to just Bluetooth doing functions) (In the basement I’ll have my studio setup, this will be if I want to chill in living room)
The new Yamaha's (M) sound is more organic (the keyboard is exciting...), alive (more advanced circuit ...) and the new AN-X engine plus 101 new features in M version in a sence of faster workflow is a must when creating the new ideas. It's not just an instrument its the " ultimate creative hub" that gives you no excuses in the sence of I don't have that or this to make great things happened. The old Montage is O.K. but even when it came out it was far from great, this M version repaires many (un-logical) mistakes they made with the original Montage version.
HAY QUE SER MUY PERO MUY EXIGENTES PARA ACTUALIZAR AL M. yo me quedo con Montage y esperaria el nuevo modelo que remplasaria este modelo como paso con la serie Motif XS
I don’t think the difference is in the sound. I guess the differences in the features they added more things that’s just my opinion and I have the montage 8 the first one
Hi DKS, Just curious, you are the only one actually sitting in the room… Do you think the M sounds better? Do you also know if they improved the sequencer, I read reviews that it’s not a true sequencer, and more just for sketching ideas… That can’t be true can it? I appreciate any info, can’t find a local store to check out the M Thanks Brendan
Hi Brendan, like previous Montage you can’t find a full sequencer because Montage is not a Workstation but a Synthesizer, and with all the available daw’s (also Cubase AI free with Montage) Yamaha did not use internal full sequencer. I think the new M is amazing and a great update to the previous model. Btw also old montage is really a great instrument and if you don’t want to add 2000€/$ over your old montage to buy the M version, you can live with that (this is the purpose of this video 😉 ) Btw i’ve sold my old montage after 6 years and this is the only instrument that convinced me to do it
Thanks for you input. I went ahead and ordered a new one. I didn’t want to get a used one from an individual, just because I would have less recourse if there was an issue, so I just got new M. In that scenario it was well worth it because I only saw used montage (old generation) for $2400-$2500. And got the new m6 for $3200 plus tax of course. Since I didn’t have to sell my old Montage That made much more sense to get a brand new board. Thanks for your input and great videos!
One more question Is there a good place to download some nice analog sounding basses. (Like early Vince Clarke yaz) I love all the sounds I’ve heard on TH-cam, but haven’t heard a lot of great analog style basses that sound great…. Thanks again
Thank you for video! Sounds of both are similar for me. Anyway, AN-X engine is damn good thing. Hope, one day Yamaha will release the AN-X engine and black UI as the new update for MODX+...
I hope they unlock the extra memory already in the old MODX, and add the AN-X engine to all the keyboards in the family to keep the whole platform on the same page of software compatible. As it stands, the Montage M does have new sonic abilities the old models don't.
I guess you could boost the low mids., filter sounds kinda harsh at high settings, disappointed. Should sound way better, let yamaha tell it. It doesn't.
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB Yes, but as studio worker I go track by track and dont need 100 voices at the same time. If I need high level sound I use plugins like UH-E or soundlibraries like spitfire audio. For single note aftertouch I use Roli Seaboard Rise with MPE. May be, that yamaha, roland, ... are good at live, but for best sounds HQ-plugins are better.
Honestly there's really no difference in the sound . But the Montage 6 has a crisp sound to it. The Montage M6 has a more warm dramatic sound to it. They both are great in sound quality. I like them both honestly but truly I'd go for the M6. Along side the Yamaha Genos 2...
Well, the only significant difference what i heared is at the dks dx7 full tines preset. The new M has a narrowed stereo space, but it's more comfortable for the ear than the original montage, in my opinion. The original preset sounds like kind of a stereo widener effect would be on it. And it's more sharper, but not in a nice way. Thanks for the presentation. I would really appreciate if You would make a presentation from the new AN-X engine, focus on bass sounds. 😊
The previous Montage sounds better than the Montage M, mostly the orchestral sounds. Some sounds, like the TX816, sound better on the newer Montage. Although the versions before that of the Motif and mo(d)x versions sounded even better to me.
Thank you for the very important video and your work! M - sounds much better (24bit and 32bit, etc. / DAC = better!!!) if you take only M!!! ((there is a video on youtube = Montage M 8 X vs Motif ES - AB Test - You won’t believe how similar they Sound!!! )
Truth is, recording each instrument over USB will not make a difference since the patches/samples being used are exactly the same. The noticeable difference is when you play live. The New Montage M has an upgraded DAC and OH BOY, it does sound better in a live scenario. Again, recording over USB, even the MODX sounds the same as the 2 montages ;)
Yamaha claimed the PAC was improved on the M and that samples were of greater clarity, resolution etc. Could anyone tell? Probably only in person could you tell. Only on some FM could I heard any differences and maybe piano slightly tighter on the M. Probably should have bypassed all effects. Do that again no effects.
Yamaha lies its costumers! They lied about MODX+ having 2 chips like the Montage comparing to regular MODX that has only one chip. But recently we found out that Yamaha was lying and the new MODX+ has only one chip like the old MODX. You can even replace mainboard of MODX with the mainboard of MODX+ and the old MODX will start to behave like a MODX+ with doubled memory and polyphony for FM-X engine. It means old MODX has enough memory on hard disk and CPU power and they could double memory and FM-X polyphony on MODX with simple firmware update, like other brands are doing. But no, Yamaha lied to us! They made only firmware update but put it in the new box called MODX+. If they lied about MODX+ having 2 chips like the Montage and telling it’s the reason why MODX+ is more expensive and old MODX discontinued and we found out that it’s not true, why should I believe Yamaha that new Montage M has better converters than the old Montage? I don’t hear significant difference in this video. Few differences can be result of different keybed. So because they are obviously lying their costumers, I’m done with the Yamaha!
@@roggyo I wonder why no hardware vendor began to start subscriptions - in days of "sustainability" it would be much better to improve existing hardware instead of selling new ones .. But yes the new displays above and the different workflows are better .. but it would be much better so see this as a new housing but sell even new boards - or add memory and so forth --
probably a 7 years "old" synth can't do more without any hardware improvement... 7 years in electronic world is like ages... for example look how many changes for a smartphone was made in 7 years... I think original montage can't do more than that. Probably they can add something but at one big risk: outdated hardware with many features and not stable instrument or with many problems. btw Yamaha, like all other manufacturers, need to make money.. and after 7 years, they release a new model to make other money :)
Fantastically useful comparison. Im really on the fence too, Agree with the comments about brighter and warmer tone on some patches on the M, yet for me original Montage captures the DX Piano and TX816 vibe much better. Wonder though how much by messing with the effects and settings on each, those gaps could be closed further? So although will probably get the M at some stage for the new bits will keep hold of my Montage 8 . The quantary is which one as the M6/M7 is far more suitable for the avilable space in my studio, but the price difference between the M6 and M8x is not that huge considering what you are getting extra. I wish Yamaha had made it a simpler choice. So might wait and see if like the Nautilus there are additonal choices added to the range. One thing have not seen discussed are the similarities in the form factor. Looks to me like the sliders, buttons and casing are exactly the same. Obviously new knobs, left hand screen and slider and button LEDs now multi coloured. But essentially just punching through the same casing differently in the layout. Is this right? If so rather unusual when you look at the competition - Fantom X to Fantom, Kronos to Nautilus. Both quite different form factors brought with their newer models . I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just interesting.
Yep, for the form factor you're right! same sizes for all three models but with different layout on panel (for knobs, display, buttons...) I Think that after 7 years, an update with new features and some changes is great! and the new additions are really useful and also the UI now is more faster than before!
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB Thanks. Suppose good news as I'm guessing it's saved some components going needlessly to waste when they switched production. Cheers and thanks again for a great side by side. Please keep them coming
Mmmh this is not so relevant.. the real point is the quality of the instrument and if you join parts with the same high quality standard in Japan, Malasya or on the Moon you can’t see any difference. The real point is: great engeniers with great ideas to realize great instruments. And Montage M is absolutely great 😉 The real problem btw are the high production cost and exportation taxes from Japan to other countries.. Montage M is not cheap, with a production in Japan the price surely would be much higher
While the Montage M line may be undeniably great synths (I will be buying one) and still well made, the country of origin definitely matters when it comes to retaining value. Japan is the gold standard for quality and durability. Why do you think they made only the Montage 8 in Japan if it doesn't matter? I'm guessing it's because the hammer action keys on the 8 required a higher level of precision/quality control than the 6/7. I hope the new Montages are as well built as my Montage 8, but time will tell.
For the imported sounds from old montage Yes! You can’t compare new sounds and old sounds with different sound engines :) new Montage M can do much more
If you play the same patch, it *should* sound exactly the same, otherwise you couldn't upgrade without changing how your music sounds. Just buy a MODX if all you care about is getting those same sounds. It's when you consider the new poly AT patches, new piano samples, improved UI, improved controls, improved keybed, etc. that the new Montage M is shining. I mean Yamaha *should* sell a more updated version in 2023 that addresses the weaknesses of the prior one.
@@ZeroGYeah! that's exactly the same comments that people are having about Genos vs Genos 2, I know Yamaha had 6 years to further develop the Genos lineup but it was already an outstanding instrument, those minor upgrades are not supposed to encourage everyone to throw their OG Genos to the bin and buy a new one, but rather give a better polished welcome to those who didn't own one to begin with. As an owner of a PSR-S970 I really see the appeal in upgrading to a Genos 2.
This is just a comparison for other Montage User or if you want one of the two. I’ve owned old montage for 7 yrs and now I only own the new M (I’ve sold the other one)

sounds almost similar. It's just a little bit of difference, but that can be achieved by eq the sounds. what do you say, guys?
yeah same . i think they differ in terms of functions
I Totally Agree!
Yamaha pulled the 'better converter' scam when the modx came out. But now everyone agrees they sound the same. Of course you hear a better sound, that is how you will justify getting ripped off. Sadly TH-cam mangles all sound so your imagination is running wild.
Thanks for the comparison!. They are so close that until there is an M6x or an M7x I will keep my MONTAGE 6 and MODX+
just thought the same. Will buy a NI Kontrol 61 for polyphonic at and use diva or Arturia / CherryAudio / GForce PLugins which seems way better than ANX ..
Wanted to buy it, but wo Poly AT M6 and M7 are way overpriced ..
The comparison is misleading. They aren't as close as this demo makes it seem like.
The old Montage and MODX are still great regardless though.
Excellent playing, demo and overview. Thank you so much DKS.
So good. Loved this just as much as the one between Montage and Phantom.
A colab between you and Claudio from Doctor Mix would be awesome!
i'm seriously thinking of purchasing the M8X,,,got to go for the flagship!,,So looking forward to Claudio's unboxing and demo for sure!!!
I still have fooooooooooond memories of that first MONTAGE.
How can I get these wonderful sounds for my MODX?
It could just be me but the Montage M sounds slightly warmer... Not so sharp sounding...
It’s you
It’s all in the settings add some bass to warm and reduce the cutoff and resonate a little
@@dave3987 then that would defeat the purpose of this entire video. The point is to leave both instruments as flat as possible (EQ) and from there listen to the difference in sound.
I actually agree with @yannDyangu. It's warmer and it's a bit richer and fuller. Gotta have a good ear to hear the minimal nuances
@@saulholguin9251 richer and fuller... great description!
Congratulations on the work!!!
I only found a difference in "DX7 full tines", did you find another difference in the studio?
For the imported sounds from previous montage, I can hear difference on some
Fm-x sounds.
@@UFO-Ark It's worth to buy used Montage these weeks, as people are changing for the new model and putting their previous Montage on the sale.
Please help: Which FM-X patch equals the AWM2 patch "Galaxy DX"?
Thank you
You did a fantastic job comparing.
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB I guess not, if I can just add a VST with AN-X-like sounds, by adding an iPad or a laptop to my current MONTAGE 6
yep! that's an option! if you don't need the new additions to the M, you can live with the "old" Montage without any problem!
It's the closest we have to Kontakt in a hardware instrument.
,,,those strings are absolutely sublime!! ❤
Very little difference between the two. Thanks for saving me big $$$. I will be keep my Montgage.
@@poplarmeadow same sounds is crazy
Thank you for your valuable input on this topic
The midi channel were fixed on the Montage and from what I read we can change them now on Montage M….so just this is enough for me
As they sound very good….
Thank you!

great comparison! amazing instruments.
The Montage sounds more digital to my ears, as in less nice converters. In a music production I'd add a plugin that adds even harmonics to make it sound warmer. The upper montage already sounds warm and balanced.
I just loved all them keys be it Yamaha or Roland. I do have both types. Thank you for displaying this without speaking…
Now you can rewatch in 4K
Does anyone know if Cubase is supposed to have a Montage M template after loading driver?
Seems like it would help me a great deal…

No big difference in sound..But they killed it with the workflow...it seems so much better overall! i am full in....
@classicarcadeamusementpark4242 probably you don't get the point of this demo (and you've not reeded the video description at all...)
The sounds are very similar from what I can hear through YT, with some very minor difference in lows and highs.
yep, and they added more features, sounds and faster UI so the new M is an evolved Montage ;) "old" Montage was already an amazing Synth!
Why the new montage m don't have new sound and performance , can someone explain that to me , because is not make any sense buy the new Montage m
Of course new Montage M has many new sounds, waveforms, performances and so on.. did you have read the video description?
@@DKS-SYNTH-LABonly heard the same sounds of regular montage
The differences are almost indistinguishable, at least to my ears.
Merci pour ce test. La différence sonore est infime entre les deux synthés mais pas le prix. Je ne suis pas certain de remplacer mon ancien montage.
The Montage M appears to have the slightest pinch more volume (or it could just be the key action is slightly different, maybe even due to the higher position of the M synth and therefore triggering velocities slightly more than the Montage!?)
I do notice the tiniest bit more fullness/possibly warmth (at times) on the Montage M, but barely noticeable hearing them back to back...
Some sounds have more difference (probably some FM-X sounds)
Of course this comparison is based on the existings sounds available for Montage (preset and my custom sounds)
New M have more sounds, new an-x (very powerful engine btw) and more feature.
I totally agree with all of your comments!
just less attack
I mean gain and EQ are cheap remedies. Especially if you have great speakers, it wouldn’t matter.
And if they are the same, I don’t need to buy it.
Or are there differences bro, apart from the appearance?
Yes, many difference… and more videos will be online soon with new M sounds only
Ottimo video!! Grazie

No bluetooth available into Montage, you have to use cables: Jack or Usb
Não vou trocar meu montage 7 por M7 só por causa de alguns botões!!
A timbragem é a mesma!!
Também possuo um Montage 7, já com a última versão. Acho que não justificaria trocar agora por um Montage M para ter somente alguns recursos novos a mais sendo que a relação custo benefício não compensaria.

Very similar in acoustic sounds. The synth engine seems to sound a bit better IMO.
Hi DKS,
Just curious, you are the only one actually sitting in the room…
Do you think the M sounds better?
Do you also know if they improved the sequencer, I read reviews that it’s not a true sequencer, and more just for sketching ideas…
That can’t be true can it?
I appreciate any info, can’t find a local store to check out the M
Thanks

Hi Brendan, like previous Montage you can’t find a full sequencer because Montage is not a Workstation but a Synthesizer, and with all the available daw’s (also Cubase AI free with Montage) Yamaha did not use internal full sequencer.
I think the new M is amazing and a great update to the previous model. Btw also old montage is really a great instrument and if you don’t want to add 2000€/$ over your old montage to buy the M version, you can live with that (this is the purpose of this video 😉 )
Btw i’ve sold my old montage after 6 years and this is the only instrument that convinced me to do it
Thanks for you input.
I went ahead and ordered a new one.
I didn’t want to get a used one from an individual, just because I would have less recourse if there was an issue, so I just got new M.
In that scenario it was well worth it because I only saw used montage (old generation) for $2400-$2500.
And got the new m6 for
$3200 plus tax of course.
Since I didn’t have to sell my old Montage
That made much more sense to get a brand new board.
Thanks for your input and great videos!

Well, the only significant difference what i heared is at the dks dx7 full tines preset. The new M has a narrowed stereo space, but it's more comfortable for the ear than the original montage, in my opinion. The original preset sounds like kind of a stereo widener effect would be on it.
Of course the new Yamaha ... ! ! !
A lot of times they give you the same sound they just rename them
Yamaha claimed the PAC was improved on the M and that samples were of greater clarity, resolution etc.

Yep, for the form factor you're right! same sizes for all three models but with different layout on panel (for knobs, display, buttons...)
I Think that after 7 years, an update with new features and some changes is great! and the new additions are really useful and also the UI now is more faster than before!
@@DKS-SYNTH-LAB Thanks. Suppose good news as I'm guessing it's saved some components going needlessly to waste when they switched production. Cheers and thanks again for a great side by side. Please keep them coming
Hard to tell the difference
For some sounds yes, for others you can hear more difference
Yep. DKS, which sound do you like? I kinda like the old one. I wonder how it would compare to a 7th generation super synth.
good 1
But what's the point of "comparing" your custom sounds for this instruments??? Of course they are identical, because you made them
because some are not identical... ;) and the point is: do you really need to upgrade to the newer model?
I think old one little bit more depth
The low mids are missing from the m6, all hype doesn't sound better at all maybe worse, all yamaha hyperbole. Sad
So the Montage 8 is the last flagship Yamaha synth made in Japan? Watch it become more valuable than the M8x in 10 years..
Mmmh this is not so relevant.. the real point is the quality of the instrument and if you join parts with the same high quality standard in Japan, Malasya or on the Moon you can’t see any difference.
The real point is: great engeniers with great ideas to realize great instruments.
And Montage M is absolutely great 😉
The real problem btw are the high production cost and exportation taxes from Japan to other countries..
Just a correction: all three models of Montage M are built in Indonesia (also Montage M8X) @@TJ_PowPow
Is it just me, or does the original Montage sound more "detailed" and fuller?
i like both! but the new M it sound great! and also don't forget the new features :)
Lol, I have the new Montage and I can tell you it is MUCH better.
There is a difference in the high end between the 2. The old has a more “open” stereo image as well on some patches.
Did you have the original Montage?@@Echochamber79
@@m.s.-16 Yes!
Montage⭐️⭐️versus Montage M⭐️
I did a blind test and couldn't tell any difference.
It’s the same, Yamaha are expert cheese repackagers
identical in everything but the massive price hike
For the imported sounds from old montage Yes! You can’t compare new sounds and old sounds with different sound engines :) new Montage M can do much more
They sound 99.99% the same - anyone who tells you they can tell which is which in a blind test is lying...
for the AWM2 and FM-X engines yes ;) btw the new Montage M can do much more than previous model ;)
If only they could have put the AT in the 6 and 7
M6 sounds bigger / has more bass.
plot twist - he's just playing one synth - one is MIDIed to the other
Nope 🤣
The New Montage M is a better board than the old one.
Show!
Same Sounds . No different. But Montage M is look likes Roland in some button and Knob. I think they r trying to catch Roland Fans😂
TH-cam is full of comparing the obvious. Do an indepth compariosn.
More videos about Montage M soon online ;)
Bonjour, quel intérêt à avoir deux claviers, qui ont à peut près les mêmes sons, mêmes styles ,etc, bon bref...amicalement. 😊
This is just a comparison for other Montage User or if you want one of the two. I’ve owned old montage for 7 yrs and now I only own the new M (I’ve sold the other one)
Same
It appears there is NO DIFFERENCE. So I buy a pressure sensitive MIDI Controller and I have the New Montage M6X with my old Montage? Yes.
Nope.. read video description please
Tidak bisa membedakan..🙇
Read video description please..
They sound the same
But they aren't.
If only they would have released a M6x and M7x to also have polyphonic Aftertouch on synth action keyboards, and not just on the M8x.
Same old song and dance, for more money. Very clean and sterile, no character at all, blah blah blah.
There's no difference 😂😂It's just the same keyboard with an M badge
Read the description of the video.. and there are many difference between old generation and the M 😉
No Different 😂
Did you read the video description?😉
