    My take:
    - Korg says: Listen how hyped and Full spectrum I am, I sound amazing in your headphones, who needs extra musicians anyway.
    - Yamaha says: I know a band has multiple instruments, and I’m the most important.
    - Roland says: I’ll let the mixing engineer decide my place in the mix.

    • @xaverk
      @xaverk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's easier to trim a full-spectrum sound than it is to blow up a lo-fi sound, I'd say.

      @@xaverk Interesting point one which often gets overlooked. How things sit in the mix. And for the most part you will find you need to trim sounds to make them play nice together not boost them. In fact, the more instruments, the more trimming is the usual work around. So Id agree with Filip, the premise being that Roland would require less attenuating than the others. Perhaps that's what they mean by SUPERNatural sounds. But just because something sounds more natural doesn't mean it sounds better. Same thing can be said about keys. On guitar the easier the neck is to play the better, on keys it seems the opposite because of Piano Purists. I neither like cheap toy feeling keybeds but after a days hard work and returning home to long hours of hardcore workhorsing I wouldn't mind my piggies being more at ease with a quality synth feel. Performing and recording I may go the other way with heavier weighted keys. The point being everything is a medium. Even our biological appendages. If we can compose straight from our minds things would be a lot different. That's as organic and natural as it can get. Everything else is just moonshine. Perhaps thats why singers are the frontmen in the spotlight. They use the least mediums. We are Ghosts in the machine/Spirits in the material world after all

      @@Voitcu I don't want to disagree at all. I just want to make you think that the electronic imitation, even just the reproduction through loudspeakers of very good, mature acoustic instruments is always worse than the original. Synthesizer sounds can also sound very nice to our ears and are not so problematic, since no comparison to acoustic instruments is possible or meaningful. The fact that singers are always the center of attention is due to the fact that the majority of our fellow human beings do not recognize music without singing as music. Most singers annoy me because they always push themselves into the foreground and in truth (usually) have the lowest qualifications of all accompanying musicians. And the worst intonation. Just my personal opinion. 🤗

      @HaydenCraig000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@xaverk Just had to comment to agree with you. Voitcu can try to argue that it's already 'precut' to play nice better, but the fact of the matter is that you can't create something that isn't there. It's always better to have more, because you can't boost something to compensate for something that isn't even there in the first place.

    It all comes down to workflow, and what workflow fits best for you. You can import samples and work them with ALL these flagship synthesizer workstations. The examples you hear in this video is what they have to offer out of stock, meaning - the sounds that came with the keyboards. They're all top-of-the-line synths, and if you find one that fits your style of playing and working, then that's the one you should use. They all have enough punch to deliver basically any sound experience you want, it all comes down to the sample sets you use, the synthesizer variations and filters you add on top of that, you can twist and mangle every sound to your liking on ALL these keyboards. (I have the Montage btw, but I honestly like the workflow and menues of the Roland Fantom much better, I just got the Montage because I got it for a crazy bargain). Bottom line is - you'll be happy if you can afford any of these.

    • @sapinit4322
      @sapinit4322 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      + the keybed must be considered, Nautilus has no AT, Phantom has a crazy AT velocity curve (extremely hard), the Montage seems to be superior here. Rg the samples - this is true, but the other thing is the synth engines and how to work with these samples. Another level is the dsp power, Roland rules in this case, no glitches, no freezes, best display. I have the Kronos II and the display is really bad and the machine is booting 80 seconds and is overall quite slow. The Roland workflow is the best, simple (in comparison to the Kronos), but the keybed (88) is not for everybody. It is not an easy decision!

      I have to admit that my own Nautilus sounds far better than in that comparison. In that video its sound seems a bit muddy, which is not the case at all.
      I tried all of them at a music store some time ago. Maybe it's because of the guy played his own patches. Better play the presets ;-).
      Anyway, ⚓ for me, don't play live so I can live with the slow touchscreen. And I don't miss aftertouch.
      All three sound great, but the ⚓ stands out for me. There is something in it, which sparks some emotions and inspiration which I don't experience with the other two.

    Keyboard player here for nearly 40 years. I don't know what it is about Korg but I have never liked anything from them. I was really impressed with the Roland. You really need to hear these on high end converters to hear the difference but it sounds like the Roland is using superior converters and analog path to montage. Everything sounds clearer and more well defined on the Roland where the Montage sounds a little murky by comparison. That is coming from a Montage owner.

All three are great but each brand defines their own style and sound. Roland's broad interface and button layout makes for a more intuitive setup but I find Korg's GUI in general way better on the display (at least the Pa5x). Just more straightforward and laid out far simpler. Rolands sequencer is really good, Korg always brings in the best synth sounds, while the Montage is sort of an all-rounder though with excellent orchestral patches but the interface seems complicated. There's no bad choice just depends on what works best for your experience and budget. They can all do pretty much the same thing and get you from A to B.

    Thank you very much for this very instructive comparison! The Korg Kronos instead of the Nautilus would be better and fairer at equivalent prices. From my personal home studio experience (mine has 40 synthesizers...), Roland's sounds are superior, but I've encountered problems with midi implementations, especially on a network. Korg disappointed me with its manufacturing expense policy, but the sounds are good. Finally for Yamaha, the reliability of the electronic circuits and their durable qualities are an asset, but the polyphony is more limited. This is a subjective opinion, because the best synthesizers are very expensive. It takes for all budgets, but now the ship is also good.

      @@Johnsicadda2433 true does depend on the person using this equipment and if they know how. So yes I do agree the Montage is a beast of today's workstations.l had the Montage 6 but I sadly returned it now I can't get it for the same price. I think today's workstations are good and they all have their PowerPoints . I was considering buying the Montage again but they won't lower the price I had it at 2,500 new at one time but that was two years ago. As far as Korg the only instrument I have ever dealt with is the Triton which was recent I found it to have some very organic sounds compared to nowadays not saying it's better but most definitely different and sound great to this day I would like to have a montage and a Triton rack the thing I love about Montage 8 scenes and you can record each track at whatever measure you want and then it loops this is especially handy for producers and people that don't want to use a computer like I said I'm from the 90s using a computer was not my way of making music that was with a digital recorder which they don't make too many of these days I used to use the RR 8 by Boss so now I'm kind of stuck on what I should buy for making electronic music but not repetitive electronic music I don't want to go to computer route but I think I need it for control options sequencing and all that other things unless you know an alternative route

I would still like to use digital recorders one thing that attracted me about the Nautilus was the 16-track audio recorder since they don't make audio recorders like they did in the year 2000 like I said I used to use a BR 8 recorder for all of my keyboards and have all my keyboards synchronized off a master keyboard so the tempo would match off of every keyboard I had especially good for using arpeggiator to this day I still use E MU Yamaha Roland

      Definitely Montage. It has a class compliant multichannel audio interface that works perfectly (low latency) even with iOS (e.g. Cubasis). DAW (Mackie) control. And you can easily switch off USB audio loopback, which is not possible on the Nautilus. Roland does not have class compliant audio interfaces. The new Montage M even comes with a software plug-in, that has all sounds.

    Interface wise, all three are pretty similar although I will say that the Yamaha looks a little more complicated for anyone that hasn't owned a Yamaha keyboard before (like me). Pianos wise, I want to say an even tie with Yamaha and the Korg Nautilus, considering that 98% of the sounds in the Nautilus are based off of the Kronos but that being said, that's a subjective subject as everyone is different. All the other sounds though, well each keyboard is unique and it just depends on what you like hearing sound wise.

    My takes.
    Piano: Montage takes it by a long shot, I did expect that though as I expected Yamaha to do a perfect job capturing *their own* pianos. I slightly prefered the Fantom over the Nautilus because it sounds like it has higher quality samples and generally knows what it wants to be. In short Montage sounded like a big concert or stadium piano, Fantom sounded like a Jazz piano, Nautilus sounded kinda generic
    Strings: Montage takes it, sounds the most open to my ears and I think it's for the same reason as the pianos probably, Yamaha makes stringed instruments aswell. Nautilus has this weird ultra scooped processed vibe to it which is cool in a way but not that useful, Fantom sounds a bit flat compared to both but the sample quality sounds higher to me than the Nautilus.
    Rhodes: Totally different types of Rhodes sounds, very hard to compare. I do prefer the warmth of the Fantom in this case with the Montage being a close second. Nautilus sounded weird an not like any real Rhodes I know of.
    Big pad: Fantom takes it by far, you can hear that's clearly a Jupiter or a JP8000 style sound. Nautilus does have a cool thing going on in a more modern sense, didn't like the Montage at all this time, sounded a bit generic for me.
    80s piano: Montage takes it for me, it's literally the real thing basically as it uses FM for that sound! Honestly sounds similar to a particular patch I like on the SY99. the MK80 emulation on the Fantom also sounds incredible. Nautilus sounds like it has no real reference and can't come close to both the others when it comes to capturing that period of time authentically, but it's a nice nostalgic yet modern sound for synthwave.
    FM Piano: again, Montage is basically the real thing. the Fantom does sample the real thing really well and the Nautilus sounds like what a "80s piano" patch should sound like and doesn't even try to emulate the real thing.
    Pluck synth: I liked all of them but Fantom takes it for me, again sounds like it's definitely an emulation of one of Roland's legendary analogs. Nautilus sounds very interesting in a modern way and Montage actually sounds like it might be FM here too!
    Dulcimer synth: All have their own character, but I'd have to pick the Nautilus for this one. Not sure what I like about it so much here but it is what it is. Montage sounds like an interesting combo of a muted piano and a supersaw and Fantom actaully sounded kinda ethnic in a cool way.
    Slow pad: Fantom takes it, love how so much is going on there. Nautilus has a weird range to it but sounds nice, Montage to me sounds a bit too harsh.
    In conclusion: Montage for real instrument sounds, Fantom for synths. But honestly if synths is the strength of the Fantom I'd rather get a Jupiter X for that :D

The Nautilus is a good board, but I owned the OASYS and the Kronos prior to the Nautilus and the Nautilus didn't shine at all.. Heavy, action is lacking for the price, screen is not as responsive as I would like, since everything you do is on the screen.. Also, it had lag when making changes on the screen, drawbars especially were a pain.. Acoustic sounds not as good as the Yamaha and Roland.. I only owned the Nautilus for a few gigs and it had to go, sorry Korg guys, but if you don't like Roland and Yamaha try a Kurzweil.........
