The way that Masai (or, as he was known in the original script, simply "The New Cyrus") was shot and directed, along with Edward Sewer's performance, was masterful. Immediately we can tell, with nothing else to go on, that, with Cyrus's death, he is now the ranking authority in the Riffs. He carries himself like a leader and exudes an effortless sense of power. His face is a complete mask, betraying absolutely nothing about his thoughts or intentions, made even more opaque by the lenses of his sunglasses, which are complete mirrors (and never once during the whole movie is there ever even a glimpse at what his eyes look like behind them). His every action seems deliberate and purposeful, and we can tell right away he isn't a man to mince words. His stone-faced demeanor is, however, clearly underscored by the gravity of the situation, and the seriousness and severity with which he speaks gives us the slightest glimpse beneath his implacable exterior: the death of Cyrus, to him, is a heinous, unforgivable crime, and the ones responsible are to be brought to justice by any means necessary. The sense of menace in his words as he forcefully relays his orders to the Riffs is palpable, and shows this is personal for him, and more than a simple matter of gang retribution. The way he reiterates: "....but I *_want_* them." suggests a level of anger at Cyrus's death that transcends the relationship of a warlord and one of his soldiers. Whatever that may have been, he is now filling Cyrus's shoes, and to show how serious he is with that above line, he is willing to put out the word to send every single gang in the city after The Warriors. The irony here is hard to miss: Cyrus brought all these gangs together with the proposition of unity and solidarity, and Masai is going to use that unity to send them all on a potentially murderous manhunt. Already, the dream of one giant, unified gang whose turf spans the whole city is dead, replaced by something far darker, and more in line with the usual way street gangs operate. Great character, great movie.

When this scene came on it genuinely made me feel apprehensive. I'll never forget it. The numerous long pauses from the leader, the sound of his footsteps, and the silence from the gang members just exuded endangerment and menace. Walter Hill was very good at creating tension with his characters.
You can't beat Afro Kung Fu vibes. The Warriors may have led this story, but the true arbiters of the underworld were always the Riffs, and them alone.
Bad thing isn't a prequel about how the Riffs control the city and influence every gang. Or a spinoff! Thanks to Rockstar and PS2 for the origins and formation of the Warriors and could be a great movie!

Get the PS2/Xbox videogame and you will have a lot more of The Riffs. In fact you can play with them and with like another 50 gangs (some of them are civilians, though). You can see what happen before and even how The Warriors were created.
You know what would be awesome? If they made a sequel, but with all of the original (surviving) cast and they’re all elderly but still gangbanging. Like somehow all the street-gangs are still after the warriors for killing Cyrus after all these years and the warriors are still managing to evade them. They can fight with canes instead of bats and run in electric wheelchairs.

The Warriors were the top gang on Coney island .According to the game, The Warriors had just recently emerged as the top gang of Coney Island, and broke off from another gang called the Destroyers which the Riff's were more familiar with .
