The guy who looked like Shaggy is actually named Sha'a Gi
😂
This was made by Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Samurai Jack. And it was one of my first exposures to Star Wars. And yeah, Grievous is so menacing in this
Don't forget Dexter's Laboratory.
@@wesmcinerny4524 True
@@wesmcinerny4524and I think the OG Powerpuff Girls too.
@@Tony2-Dirty Genndy was involved with PowerPuff Girls, but the creator was Craig McCracken.
@@wesmcinerny4524 right! I knew both were involved, but I always forget which one was the actual creator
This series was basically a long commercial for Revenge of the Sith, leading right up to its release.
Good times! I was a little kid when this was airing.
27:37 His name is Durge, and his is a bounty hunter. In cannon, I am fairly sure that he survives the Clone Wars, and lives during the Imperial era.
It took anikin throwing him into a sun to kill him in ledgends
Oh... That sounds awesome! I will have to look into that!😄
Unexpected, but welcome reaction. If it’s any consolation to Bethany, Ventress is responsible for Anakin’s scar.
The red ARC trooper is called Fordo and his group becomes known as the Muunilist 10. He and mainly another ARC trooper, Alpha, are known to be the inspiration for Rex later on in TCW.
That speeder bike fella is called Durge. He’s not very fond of Mandalorians, much less clones of one. In the comics, Anakin eventually kills him permanently via a star.
Yes. THIS is Greivous. Absolutely terrifying when you were a kid.
I personally still headcanon Part 1 and the first scenes of Part 2 of the micro series as a sort of filler between Ep II and TCW.
Death by star is new 😯
@ “🎶The sun is a deadly laser🎶”
This series was probably the coolest thing I’d ever seen as a child
The reason General Grievous is so different in this version is that Tartakovsky really likes those invincible, Terminator-style robots. So far as many fans are concerned, THIS is the (definitely) definitive version.
Also I have always loved the jousting scene! If this setting had plasma swords, why not directed-energy lances?
Yes! Why not more jousting in Star Wars?! 🤩
He's basically Legends Grievous.
@frontgamet.v1892
Nice flag! May I ask if it means anything or is it just a fun design?
18:20 Fun fact: if you listen closely, the voice actress for Padme in this series is Grey Deslisle. It's Azula.
Ironic, you heard her as a villain in Avatar and now you see her being a good character.
Yay! She slayed as Azula 🤩
ARC troopers are trained to fight on their own for at least three weeks. They became the best infiltrators during the clone wars getting in, causing havoc, and getting out without a fatality. Their job was to hit more sensitive parts of the battlefield but also the most important.
Pretty much based on modern day special forces, using them in the frontlines is a waste of their potential.
3:30 Note that the really amazing thing is that this series focused on less dialogue for the clones. In the story, it was confirmed that they communicated with nonverbal hand signals as well as the internal coms of their helmets. They were having tactical and full on conversations in their helmets and everyone outside or who wasn't part of their radio headsets couldn't hear what they were saying.
The clones were conveying pure badass moments while to the audience, it seemed like they were being silent action heroes.
Yes! It's so nice to see someone else who understands that they were talking to each other through their internal helmet comms. So many people think that, because we can't hear them, that they were exclusively communicating through hand signals when, in reality, they were having full convos that we just couldn't hear.
And talking smack at the Jedi when they made dumb decisions or were being weird. You know there was that going on
@@chazo1367 Eh, the regular troopers definitely weren't doing that, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the ARCs were because the Alpha ARCs had no qualms about talking back to a Jedi if they thought said Jedi's command was incorrect.
Durge was a unique species called a Gen'Dai. They were literal boneless masses that had sentience. They could easily recover from most damage they take unfortunately they burned like crazy. To recover they went into a state of temporary insanity to return to something normal. They usually took a humanoid form. But they wore armor to keep the form. Anakin ended Durge by luring him into an escape pod and dropping the pod into a star. It was the only way. It was late in the war as well. Durge was usually paired up with an acolyte but sometimes grievous depending on the mission.
SO FREAKIN YES!!!
This micro-series has more action in than every star wars movie and Netflx TV show combined.
😎🤘🤩
Captan Fordo is the greatest hero in the republic army. When Grevious goes to bed he checks his closet for Captain Fordo. And unlike Rex, he’s an actual ARC Trooper.
I remember watching this when it premiered. The hype for Grievious was overwhelming after this. I remember all of us were looking forward to seeing him again.
And then we saw him again.... lol
@ haha right? I remember waiting weekly for anything Star Wars to see this guy. Even buying comics if it showed him haha
@@MasamuneChad Thanks George Lucas
@@MasamuneChad Man, I remember how disappointed I was when I saw him fight in the movie compared to this.
count dooku personally trained grievous in lightsaber combat. and because he lacked the power to use the force, he created a totally unorthodox and bizzare style of fighting that very few could defend against. especially since the jedi at the time weren't as experienced in saber combat, save for yoda and mace.
Kit Fisto’s Lightsaber was BOILING underwater. It was a cool design.
iirc That was a big contribution Kit Fisto had to the Jedi as a whole. It wasn't just his lightsaber but he created a design for the modern lightsaber to function normally underwater. Obviously because of his aquatic homeworld but his innovation to the design became standard.
@@MrrynAnakin was the one who invented a workable underwater lightsaber with his second lightsaber, before this the saber would short out and not work underwater. Many Jedi starting with Kit Fisto took on his design and implemented it into their own sabers for underwater use.
The tentacle monster guy was a bounty hunter named Durge. He is terrifying and almost impossible to kill.
For example, Obi Wan blowing him up from the inside? That didn't actually kill him. It might take him a little bit longer to regenerate but he'll be good as new once he does.
Damn 😱
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 The only way Durge was able to actually die was Anakin had to use the Force to throw him into a SUN where he would be burned alive.
Yeah his race is Gen'Dai and like stated above they are insanely hard to kill. They pop up from time to time in the lore.
@@digitaladventurer2142 Pretty much just a hunk of muscles that regenerate insanely well and also the longest living species (I think) in the legends lore. Yoda's species lives for about 1000 years but Gen'Dai lives for a couple of thousands.
There was going to be a scene with Durge starting to regenerate and watching the Jedi, but it was cut.
This is Anakin after episode 2. He is still a padawan, and this was his first battle as a commander lead the space assault, and the Anakin in Clone Wars is him after he was knighted and had been at war after a couple of battles leading troops.
😎👍🙂
When Anakin chases Ventress, the planet they have their duel on is Yavin 4. The same planet the rebel alliance would eventually set up their main base in A New Hope.
So the 2D microseries came first, in 2003. I believe it was released in the leadup to Revenge of the Sith, and was part of the Clone Wars Multimedia Project.
The Multimedia Project and the 3D Clone Wars are two different versions of the events that took place in the span of time between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and there's so many differences between the two that they can't exist in the same continuity.
Personally, I prefer the Multimedia Project, as it fits significantly better with the movies and the Expanded Universe than TCW, which contradicts the movies and the Multimedia Project all throughout.
You're right in the lead up to Revenge. Cuz the end of Volume 2 is where Grevious kidnaps Palpatine and Anakin and Obi-Wan are returning to rescue him, which leads to start Episode 3
This was where Ventress, Cody, and Grievous made their big debut. When the other Clone Wars series began, I was happy to see that Ventress was back; especially considering how much her character has developed over time. As for Grievous, as much much as I enjoyed seeing him in the other show, you got to admit he was way more terrifying here; it's a shame ROTS and the other Clone Wars series couldn't quite match his level of menace here.
Maybe they would have if they didn’t lean into the kids show vibe in the beginning. The show got darker as the seasons went and they realized adults watch cartoons too. It’s still a stigma in some circles with animation being kids stuff but thankfully it has changed a lot. 🤗
23:46 This is on Yavin 4 where the Rebel Base was in A New Hope
They didnt know georges plans to make grevious a wimp during this series production. So we thankfully got the absolute menace that was 2003 Grevious. His fighting style is great because he cant fight the force honestly. If a jedi could focus on him hes dead, so hes always moving, hiding and ambushing and uses fear tactics so the jedi cant focus on the force.
This was my favourite General Grievous
Ventress was voiced by Cree Summer who was fresh off her role in KND. She used a bit of number 5 and her sister combined but higher pitched. Ventress received Komari vosa twin lightsabers. Vosa died by the hands of Jango Fett after going mad and turning to the dark side after the battle that Dooku turned. Vosa was actually close to becoming a council member if she didn’t go nuts. She was supposed to take the diplomatic seat which master mundi took. Each seat has a role.
Ventress was Grey Griffin, not Cree
26:23 awwww even the dog knows that Grievous coming is a bad sign so he’s growling
26:30
The Jedi that looks like Shaggy is named Shaa Gi
😂 perfect 😁
the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars series aired on Cartoon Network between the releases of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith throughout 2003-05, the main directive of this series was dial everything up to 11 and GO NUTS (a Genndy speciality)
At this point though many details of Revenge of the Sith weren't finalised, like sound designer Matthew Wood wasn't the iconic voice of the Battle Droids or General Grievous yet, nor had Captain Rex or Ahsoka been imagined. The artists of the 3D series did borrow the aesthetic of this version though, Dooku and Obi-Wan are the closest to these 2d designs.
Fun-fact, the species of Durge and of Rayvis (secondary antagonist of the Jedi Survivor video game) is called a Gen'dai, a loving nod to Genndy himself.
It might not be the most story heavy series, but good gods damn if it isn't entertaining as all hell.
Our Grievous goes up to 11 😈
The superior Clone Wars. That inspired the later cgi one.
This is still canon for me. Ties into all the books
As a kid this my favorite Star Wars mostly for how anime it was
Clone Wars 2008 may have been a better show over all, but cannot compete with how cool they made the jedi look in this show! Even with far less time, they showed how devastating the power of the force can be, even abilities forgotten about in the movies like the Force Dash are in this show.
I held out hope the official Clone Wars would give us a scene as like Mace's fight against the Droids in the dessert, but I was disappointed we never did. The new show spent so much time trying to paint him as a jerky boss, they forgot he's supposed to be a badass as well, a man who dislikes violence, yet is so good at inflicting it, who fights the Darkside, yet relies it. He was supposed to be the council's champion, always in the heat of battle. And don't even get me started on Grievious!
2008 was a lot worse. What are you talking about?
general grievous was absolutely terrifying in this series. he was a utter monster and they had to nerf him hard in the movie and the CW series.
15:21 this was one of my favorite scenes, mace punching the shit out of some droids haha
Yep 😏
I honestly prefer this over the other animated Clone Wars series and even some of the prequels
Yes grew up watching them and love them
10:28 A character of his race also appears in the "Hedi: Survivor" game btw.
25:07 That is the same sort of ship Ventress used in the Clone Wars arc where Dooku betrays her.
That duel between anakin and Ventress became the stuff of legend. It became his trial of skill. The duel between Dooku and Anakin was the trial of Flesh. Trial of bravery was every battle he had through the clone wars. The trial of spirit was his toughest challenge as he tracked down shaokan scientists having visions of his dark self. He failed trial of heart on tattooine.
The Arc trooper who talked to kenobi was Fordo. He often was placed on the front lines.
Read that fast as Frodo 😂
Also this one takes place a few months after attack of the clones hence the whiny anakin as you say
Ah yes, the micro series we had in between the prequel movies. For what its worth, its very good and had a deadly interpretation of Grievous. Most people will, to this day, say that its the best version of him and I'm inclined to agree
Grievous is always badass and a threat to any Jedi he fights. He's a legendary warrior who went through body modifications to make himself the ultimate killing machine. Iirc he did it so he could kill Jedi since he couldn't become one due to not being force sensitive. This show is far better at showing the warrior. The newer clone wars is better at showing his personality as both a person and a leader. Both versions are really fun to watch, but I'm more partial to the newer clone wars cause of his rivalry with Obi-Wan.
For the longest time, this was the only clone wars we had, and it doesn't disappoint. Hopping from planet to planet and battle to battle, which, I think, shows the scale of the war far better than the newer show. That being said, the newer one focuses on the effects and individual costs of war far better. Both versions of the clone wars are great watches and depending on what you latch onto as a viewer, either one could be considered superior and no one would bat an eye.
A lot of times people tend to lean towards what they saw first 🤗
2:24- The ARC Trooper in red is the original badass clone who would be the fitting ideal for ARC Troopers and would lead to the eventual best known clone trooper in the later Clone Wars series Captain Rex (CT-7567), Captain Fordo (Alpha-77).
the thing about the micro series is it was made to quickly tell the story of the clones wars for the in between of episodes 2 and 3. A lot of it is now non canon but a few things do still work that they could remain canon and some of it is canon to explain some events.
3:28 🤣🤣 10/10 B1 impression
😜🤗
A good way to look at this... Clone Wars is what actually happened, this miniseries is what some in-universe imagined it to be.
The first volume of this series was actually the first two seasons, the first one came out late 2003 and the second in early 2004 so right in between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. The third season which is all of the next volume was released 2 months before Revenge of the Sith.
I remember watching this when it first appeared on tv. Good times 😌 I always loved the random comedy moments that would pop up during the more tense moments 😅
I still get chills hearing that intro theme
Anakin and Ventress had their duel on Yavin 4, actually. The same planet where the Death Star will eventually be destroyed.
The Red ARC Trooper is Fordo. Before the Clone Wars series with Rex Anakin had a blue ARC trooper named Alpha and Rex was going to be that character but Lucas felt another character with an A name was too much so it was made into a new character. Alpha is about twice the size of Rex and has no issue with war crimes, he in fact encourages them. In old lore all the ARC troopers were personally trained by Jango Fett, why so many of them duel wield pistols.
Now you guys understand how powerful force wielders are.
Yep 🤩
Never feed TCW lovers diamonds... they don't get anything and only care about quantity over quality...
OMG OMG OMG YES! Guys I love you so much!
Our pleasure 🥳🥳
notice how anakin spoke to the clones prior to his battle with ventress, and then add on what we know from the clone wars show after what happened notice his change.
Glad you Guys Found this.
We are too 🙂
Dave Filoni's Clone Wars got the same voice actors for Obi Wan, Yoda, and Dooku, and of course Anthony Daniels for C-3PO. The voice actress for Ventress though you may recognize as the same voice actress for Azula in Avatar; she also does Padme, Shaak Ti, and one other Jedi in this.
I’m glad they didn’t keep Anakin’s VA 😬🤗
Well if you DIDN'T expect to be afraid by the end, you've made grievous mostake.
I watch it as a kid and it’s the best thing ever and now it’s still the best
🤩
This is the REAL Clone Wars animation to me, I've both volumes on DVD/Blu ray. The animation was done by the Samurai Jack folks. The argument has been made that volume 2 syncs more with the ending of the CG Clone Wars series, but I still prefer this one.
Oh yeah, Genndy Tartakovsky in the house. Now look up Primal, it'd say it's the magnum opus of his art as it's got no dialogue. This was created as a bridge between episode II and III, as well as prmo material for III.
The duel was on the jungle moon of Endor. Look closely and you’ll realize that it’s the rebel base from episode 5. Just no tech. And no X-wings. It’s also the same base from Star Wars rebels. The entire area was cleared for the airfield. That temple complex has a lot of history with the Jedi from its early days. The natives even use the names Aslah and Bogan which are names for the light and dark sides. The original planet of Jedi had these two moons that were strong in either light or dark. You had to balance the two before entering the planet so the Jedi would spend time on each moon balancing themselves before going to the planet for the grey. Aslah was where the first true lightsaber was invented unfortunately by an unnamed person who was strong in the dark side. The saber was very similar to modern lightsabers but it was old technology, it had a white blade. The Jedi tried recreating it, only creating a proto-saber which was a literal battery pack connected by wire to a hilt with a visible crystal. It was a start. The Jedi still have the first lightsaber buried deep in the archives as none have really studied it closely as it’s not interesting enough.
So these played between episode 2 and revenge of the sith on tv, season 1 played as 3 minute episodes between other cartoons hence the abrupt story shifts. Season 2 became longer episodes with feeer of them, i think 10 minutes each. It was the original plan for how 3 would be set up way back before the cgi series became a thing.
In the old comics Dooku employed many bounty hunters, mercenaries and dark jedi as before disney several jedi ended up swapping sides to aid Dooku after losing faith in the jedi order and the republic.
Jungle Moon is Yavin IV (in Ep4 it's the Rebel Base)
Ice planet (moon to be more precise) is the same that becomes Starkiller Base in Ep7).
This is an interesting one. This series was actually part of a large-scale Multimedia Project that Lucasfilm made after Attack of the Clones but before Revenge of the Sith was released. As such, this series ties into numerous Star Wars comics and novels that were released at time and together all of these different pieces of media told the events of the Clone Wars, whilst also tying in with the content of the original Expanded Universe, as it existed back then.
A few years after Revenge of the Sith released, Lucasfilm decided to make the 3D animated Clone Wars series that you've already seen. The 3D Clone Wars show changed many of the events of the Clone Wars and essentially overwrote the original Multimedia Project, thus making the Multimedia Project a part of the Star Wars legends branding.
The Star Wars Legends branding essentially encompasses all the Star Wars comics, novels and videogames that were released before 2014, which is when Disney basically hit the reset switch and kept only the original 6 movies and the 3D Clone Wars series as part of the overall Star Wars story.
The purple guy in the armor is a nearly unkillable race of very few in population called gen’dai. He’s the bounty hunter named durge
This is the original Clone Wars. The 3D series came later. These were 2-3-minute clips played between episodes of Cartoon Network shows in the leadup to Episode III. It was never intended to be watched as two long connected episodes, and they did the series dirty by not indicating the breaks between episodes, so it feels like you are just jump cutting from one scene to another. When broadcast these were awesome for filling in some of the blanks of what happened between Episode II and Episode III and building up the hype of the new movie coming out. The series ends literally moments before the start of Episode III, the scenes are connected.
I am glad Disney dug this out of the archives for Disney+ because the fact that the 3D series shares the same name made this very difficult to find for many years.
I was thrilled that you caught the Mean Joe Green Coca-Cola ad in the Mace Windu episode. That episode one of the first times we really got to see a Jedi cut loose with their powers and really made an impression.
Grievous in this was little more than an idea at the time and the show writers were pretty much given the design and free reign to figure out what to do with him. Part way through the production of this series George Lucas decided Grievous should be a prototype for Vader, and if he was a prototype he couldn't be more bad ass than Vader which is why we ended up with the wheezing asthmatic Grievous in the movie and not this frankly terrifying villain.
Grievous was already menacing
This is the planet illum the same place as the Gathering Arc from TCW. It’s also a Cal’s kestis gets his second Crystal one that breaks in half at the end of Jedi fallen order.
I actually like Anakin more in this series. It's much more in line and consistent with his depiction in the films. Where Anakin from the 3d clone wars is agreed upon by most to be basically a completely different character
I absolutely love the Star Wars Micro 2D series when i owned the first volume on dvd I also saw the trailer of the Star Wars Republic commando trailer and I was hooooooked! You two should play it!
Thanks for the game suggestion 😅
Love Durge and the original grievous as well. Also in the comics anakin kills durge by locking him inside an escape pod and send him into a sun only way to kill him
Fun Fact about me: this Micro-Series was my official introduction to Star Wars as a Series/Franchise.
Also, in case you don’t know, this came out before Episode III.
I will look forward to see your Reaction to Volume 2.
By the way, I want you to react to the Gildedguy Series at some point, very well done Animation and Visual Storytelling.
This is the telling of content over drinks at the local cantina....
"No pudu, There I was and...."
It is as conon as you want it to be.
I dig that outlook on it and description 🙂😎🤘
This was General Grievous' first appearance, and it was amazing. They nerfed him for Revenge of the Sith and The CGI Clone Wars because George Lucas didn't like that Grievous was a near-unstoppable-Jedi-killing-machine. That's supposed to be Darth Vader's job during and after order 66.
God feel old asking my parents for a clone wars set when I was a kid
If Tartakovsky took total control of the _Star Wars_ franchise, it would blow _Warhammer 40,000_ out of the water.
YESSS!
So glad yall decided to watch this!
I grew up on this and the rest of the Clone Wars media before the reboot series overwrote it all in preperations for the Disney sale.
Still sad the Disney version never referenced any of the books.
And of course, Grievous' handling cannot be understated.
Also, this is the canon version lol
TCW came after, it's definitely heavier on character work though. This one was pitched more as a series of short war stories in the world of Star Wars
"Somethings not right" gets me every time lmao
The woman that was playing padmay says like azula form the avatar the last airbender
😯🤩
29:46 that’s the point, he’s an immature 19 year old kid thrust into one of the most stressful situations you can be put in, a literal galactic war. It’s the same as the movies with attack of the clones, he’s not meant to be some flawless perfect representation of the Jedi, he’s the most human and emotional of any of them and acts as one who isn’t conditioned from infancy to suppress their emotions would, like a normal human. Anakin has had thrust upon him only the highest of expectations with very little of the proper guidance or the trust you think he’d receive from the order and his peers so it’s only normal he’d go to lengths to prove that their faith in him (or rather his potential and abilities) isn’t misplaced. Maybe understand the character before you just try to rip him apart?
This series was Awesome It was this that introduced me to Star Wars as a kid and I loved every episode except the light sabers fights(exception Grevious) mainly because I loved the war scenes
This is my favorite Star Wars animated show of all time this follows up to Star Wars episode 3 Revenge of the Sith.
3:14 Separatist stinger missile
Durge is a Gen’Dai. If you played Jedi Survivor, he’s the same species as Ravis. But Durge is much more powerful.
O yes the best of the best, sadly is no longer canon amzing how Genndy Tartakovsky manage to do this with such low budget
Star wars was never this badass.
26:29 his name is actually shaa-gi
That’s amazing 😝
The guy that fought obiwan his name is dr
Durge
Oh snap! You guys are reacting to this!?
Yep 😁
You guys gotta check out Primal from the same director Genndy Tartakovsky, it;s awesome
Lol i OWN this part and its better than Disney's last 10 years.
26:36 that's the Grievous we want
(Had to break this into multiple comments in order to post this here. Sorry)
I always forget just how crazy this micro series gets until i watch it again. I absolutely love how over the top it gets, just dialing everything up to 11. I can't remember where I heard this, but I once heard someone compare the Clone Wars shows by saying that the 2D Clone Wars is like a Republic propaganda film with how insane all the action is and how powerful it makes the Jedi and clones, while the 3D Clone Wars is what was really happening, not as bombastic and portraying the war more realistically. I think that makes a lot of sense, especially since this micro series is no longer considered canon. A bit of background: this series was released between 2003 and 2005, and was intended to serve as a bridge between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. It was created by Genndy Tartakovsky (along with George Lucas), who also created the shows Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack, among others, and the Hotel Transylvania movies. There were a total of 25 episodes, or "chapters," split among 3 seasons; Volume 1 is made of of seasons 1 and 2 and comprises the first 20 chapters with each chapter being around 3 minutes long. Volume 2 will be chapters 21-25, with each chapter being around 12-15 minutes each. I think the easiest way for me to handle these fun facts is to go in order, chapter by chapter. We've got 20 to get to today, so let's go ahead and get into it, this is going to be a looong comment.
Chapter 1: we start with a narration from Yoda, along with footage of battle. The creature Yoda is riding on is a kybuck, a species of ungulate native to Kashyyyk which make their original first appearance here. You guys first saw these in Tales of the Jedi episode 1 on Shili with Ahsoka's parents. Yoda's kybuck was given to him by a Woolwarrica princess he saved from dying (Woolwarrica is a large expanse of prairies on Kashyyyk, the region kybucks are native to). We get a mention and appearance of the planet Dac (also called Mon Calamari) where we see the Quarren pledging their loyalty to Dooku and the Separatists like in season 4 of The Clone Wars. Lastly, we get the original first appearance of the V-19 Torrent starfighter and the first appearance of Anakin's unique customized Delta-7 Aethersprite-class starfighter, the Azure Angel, which sadly never made it into canon along with Anakin's original astromech assigned to him by the Jedi, R4-P22.
Chapter 2: The planet that Anakin and Obi-Wan arrive is called Muunilinst, a colony world of the Muuns (the species of long faced humanoids that runs the Banking Clan) and the headquarters of the InterGalactic Banking Clan, as opposed to the Muun homeworld Scipio like in the 3D series. Muunilinst has been mentioned, but has yet to appear in canon as of writing this. The objects that ambush the Republic forces once they arrive are simply known as InterGalactic Banking Clan gun platforms, orbital defense stations equipped with many weapon emplacements as well as hangars for support fighters. These platforms all housed a large amount of Geonosian Nantex-class territorial defense starfighters, more commonly called "beak-wing fighters" due to their unique shape, manufactured by Huppla Pasa Tisc Shipwrights Collective and designed for the exclusive use of the Geonosians. And finally, this episode introduces a fan favorite character with ARC-77, a.k.a. Fordo. He is the ARC trooper with the red markings that leads the ARC trooper task force once the Republic lands; while he is referred to as both sergeant and commander, his official rank is captain.
Chapter 3: This chapter is a little light on fun facts to mention, the only notable ones being the first appearance of the "dragon beast," also known as Muunilinst lizards (the animal that Fordo shoots at and scares away), as well as the commando recon droid, a specialized reconnaissance probe droid used by clone commandos and ARC troopers.
Chapter 4: This episode features an appearance of several Muuns, including San Hill, the chairman of the Banking Clan who first appeared on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones alongside the rest of the Separatist Council, pledging their loyalty and resources to Count Dooku. Hill would remain the chairman of the Banking Clan until the end of the Clone Wars where he and the rest of the Separatist Council would be killed on Mustafar by the newly anointed Darth Vader. This episode also features Republic Self-Propelled Heavy Artillery Turbolasers (or SPHA-T) walkers firing into the city. These walkers first appeared in Attack of the Clones, where they were able to successfully shoot down several Lucrehulk-class core ships and Hardcell-class interstellar transports (commonly called Techno Union ships) before they were able to retreat during the Battle of Geonosis. Unfortunately, they would be destroyed by a force of IG lancer combat droids, a type of battle droid resembling the IG series assassin droids we've seen in other media (notably the bounty hunters IG-88 that first appeared in Empire Strikes Back and IG-11 that first appeared in The Mandalorian). But the biggest thing to talk about is the first on-screen appearance of the Separatist commander of this battle, the bounty hunter Durge. Durge was a bounty hunter that was born around 2000 years before the Clone Wars, and has been active as a bounty hunter for nearly as long. He was able to achieve this longevity through both his enhanced armor and his heritage. Durge is a Gen'Dai, a unique species native to an unnamed homeworld. The Gen'Dai (whose name comes from Genndy Tartakovsky's first name) are essentially walking nerve clusters, lacking bones and only being made up of a formless jumble of corded muscle and nerve bundles, usually inhabiting heavy armor made for humanoids to give them form and pass for any number of other species. Their only distinct feature of Gen'Dai were their heads: typically bald, their faces were humanoid with two eyes, a nose and a mouth full of sharp teeth and two large, wing-like ears which they typically tucked under their jaw-line when wearing helmets to hide their features. They lacked the vulnerable vital organs of most species, including hearts and lungs, and could take extreme injuries, even complete dismemberment, and survive which gave them the reputation of being immortal (their lifespan was on average 4000-7000 years). They could actually regrow lost limbs or other body parts in only a few minutes (Durge himself even managed to survive being buried alive for 60 years). Unlike most species, they had a nervous system which was distributed hroughout the body in the form of millions of nerve clusters, which gave the species near instantaneous reflexes as well as the ability to sustain a high volume of injuries without any overall damage. So high was their sensory acuity, that the Gen'Dai were able to feel a Human's heartbeat from ranges of up to 200 meters. Ultimately, there were only two ways a Gen'Dai could be permanently killed: complete vaporization or incineration of one's body or the physical destruction of one's brain, as the brain was the only aspect of their bodies that could not be regenerated fully. Durge first appeared in issue 51 of the Star Wars: Republic comic series, "The New Face of War, Part 1."
Chapter 5: This is another pretty light chapter. We go to Mon Calamari where the planet has split between its native species, the Mon Calamari loyal to the Republic and the Quarren who have joined the Separatists, just like in season 4 of the 3D series. We get an appearance of Master Kit Fisto, again similar to the 3D series, along with several divisions of SCUBA troopers, sporting a phase 1 armor version of the SCUBA armor we saw the clones use in the 3D Clone Wars show. The droids here consist of Manta droid subfighter (seemingly an aquatic version of the vulture droid starfighter), B1 battle droids riding an unnamed model of mini-sub, and large sea carriers only identified as Separatist Sub-Carriers to carry them into battle. In addition to Kit Fisto and the SCUBA troopers, the Mon Calamari join in the fight with their Mon Calamari Knights, fighters armed with energy lances and riding keelkana, large and fierce eel-like creatures native to Mon Calamari. The large cannon the Quarren use that is powerful enough to cut an Acclamator-class assault ship in half is only identified as the Crab Cannon. All of the droid types (minus the standard B1) and the Mon Calamari Knights, plus the phase 1 clone SCUBA trooper, have yet to appear in canon, though the Manta sub and Mon Calamari Knights have been mentioned in novels and reference books.
Chapter 6: This chapter begins with Count Dooku arriving on the planet Rattatak, homeworld to the Rattataki species, a near-human species characterized by their chalk-white skin and bald heads. Asajj Ventress was originally a Rattataki before being retconned to be a Nightsister from Dathomir. Dooku is greeted by an unnamed henchman of an unknown humanoid species and taken to an arena called "The Cauldron." He is promptly killed by Asajj Ventress, making her original on-screen debut in this chapter and sporting a much more monochromatic design than her 3D counterpart, complete with white, pupilless eyes. She jumps in and easily dispatches all of the gladiators left fighting. The gladiators are Blorga, a Gamorrean (the same species as Jabba's palace guards), Grunda Dolma, an Aqualish (the bug eyed thing in the brown robe with the staff), Nilo, a Rodisar (species native to Rodis, yet to appear in canon, the tan one with blue eyes wearing the green armor), L8-L9, a prototype battle droid (the red one with the flamethrowers), Flalios, a human (the shirtless guy swinging the balls on chains), Jasper McKnives, a Nikto, Krutch, a member of an unknown spider-like species, Anchor Blue, a Houk (the large brown creature with the anchor for a hand), Swyy'm-Ee, a Trogodile (the crocodile looking guy in the red armor), Kulltu Kutta, an unknown species riding a sowsquatch (the large animal with the green eyes, not much is known about them either), Mantoid, an unknown type of droid (the black droid with the multiple knife arms), Crockagor, a member of an unknown green reptilian species (the big green guy with the club), an unnamed warrior wearing armor reminiscent of real ancient gladiators, a captive wampa, Carl, a Shikitari (large green insectoid creature), Bugnaught, an insectoid looking droid, and finally "Giant" Flog, a member of the unknown species (the big brownish guy with the small red eyes).
Chapter 7: This is another episode light on fun facts, mainly consisting of a fight between Dooku and Ventress on Rattatak before Ventress is knocked out and taken to a large penthouse, presumably in Dooku's home on Serenno. The only other notable thing is Ventress is presented with her trademark red lightsabers as well as her Ginivex-class starfighter (commonly called Fanblade starfighters) produced by the Geonosian Huppla Pasa Tisc Shipwrights Collective, the same one she has in the 3D series.
Chapter 8: Another light on fun facts episode, we go back to Muunilinst where Obi-Wan dons his unique armored robes and a phase 1 clone helmet and leads an army of clones on speeder bikes with lances into a mass joust against Durge and his IG lancer droids. Kenobi stabs Durge, where we first see just how resilient Gen'Dai are and, after a short fight, Durge loses an arm and is bisected through the middle, seemingly dead. However, his remains begin to rejoin and heal once Obi-Wan has left.
Chapter 9: Another light fun fact episode, Obi-Wan rushes to join Captain Fordo and his ARC troopers, the Muunilinst 10. They attack the Separatist command tower to force San Hill and the Muuns to surrender, destroying all droid forces in the room, including 3 droidekas that come in as reinforcements. Durge reappears before Hill can surrender and begins to attack, only to be shot down by the ARC troopers. But this just removes his armor (except for his helmet) revealing his true Gen'Dai form. Durge absorbs Obi-Wan and tries to kill Captain Fordo before being blown apart by the trapped Kenobi, again seemingly killing Durge; however while Obi-Wan picks up Durge's helmet, his pulverized remains slither away, unnoticed by the Jedi Master and the clones.
Chapter 10: Another light episode, we go to the space battle above Muunilinst. Anakin is able to destroy much of the Geonosian starfighters plus one of the gun platforms before Ventress appears and obliterates Anakin's Blue Squadron. Anakin warns the other pilots of the new arrival, saying: "This one's mine." However, he doesn't know that the ship is piloted by Ventress.
Chapter 11: Another light episode, Anakin gives chase to the mystery pilot, scoring a hit, though Ventress is also able to damage his ship. Ventress plunges into Muunilinst's atmosphere and Skywalker gives chase, with both flying through the streets of the city of Harnaidan (the city Obi-Wan's been fighting in). Obi-Wan tries to get Anakin to break off pursuit and rejoin his squadron in space but, of course, Anakin disobeys and chases Ventress, following her after she jumps to hyperspace. Obi-Wan orders a squadron of clones to follow them. They do so in a CR-20 trooper carrier, a transport made by Corellian Engineering Corporation, making its first appearance here (another ship that unfortunately hasn't appeared in canon as of yet).
Chapter 12: This episode jumps to the planet Dantooine and opens on a young boy named Paxi Sylo watching a battle unfold between the droids and the clones. The clones are led by Mace Windu, making his debut in the series. Though Windu is gaining the upper hand, the droids unveil new weapon, a seismic tank, making its first appearance (this has made it into canon, although only briefly in a flashback in issue 3 of the Obi-Wan comic). The seismic tank was a repulsorcraft that traveled close to the surface of a planet and inflicted damage by ejecting a large piston downward on the enemy, smashing them and then creating a massive shockwave that rippled away from the impact zone. These were originally designed by Haor Chall Engineering for the Commerce Guild as a mining vehicle used to tear up the surface of a planet to reveal precious minerals, but were militarized due to the outbreak of the Clone Wars. In the chaos of the shockwave from the tank, Mace Windu is separated from his troops and has also lost his lightsaber, which is unfortunate as he is surrounded by B2 super battle droids.
Chapter 13: Another light episode, we see Mace Windu have to defend himself without his lightsaber. Augmenting himself with the Force, he uses his fists to destroy many of the droids until the seismic tank fires again. In the shockwave, he spots his lightsaber and manages to retrieve it. Reunited with his saber, he is able to make quick work of the tank and the remaining droids. After an impressive display he lands near the onlooking Paxi Sylo, who offers the Jedi a drink from his canteen, which Windu accepts. This episode is arguably the most controversial among fans, as some believe that it exaggerates Mace's abilities with the Force. I personally am of the mind that it falls under the Rule of Cool; it's awesome so I don't care if it breaks the rules.
Chapter 14: This episode takes place on the ice planet Ilum (which we saw in season 5 of the 3D Clone Wars series), inside a sacred Jedi site, a cave containing lightsaber crystals. Master Luminara Unduli is supervising the creation of her Padawan Barriss Offee's (both of whom making their series debut here) lightsaber. After Offee is finished, Unduli congratulates her for completing her training, though the celebration is short-lived as Luminara senses something amiss. What she sensed were cloaked Separatist chameleon droids laying mines in an attempt to destroy a site necessary for the Jedi war effort. The chameleon droids are modified Spelunker probe droids, mining droids made by Arakyd Industries and used by the Commerce Guild to explore inhospitable planets for valuable minerals, and are making their first appearance here. The Jedi stop the droids from entering the crystal-laden part of the cave by precipitating a cave-in, unfortunately also sealing them inside. Luckily Yoda is nearby, traveling near Ilum with Padmé Amidala aboard her H-type Nubian yacht (or Naboo yacht). He sensed them through the Force and states that they need to help the trapped Jedi.
Chapter 15: This episode opens with Padmé's head of security, Captain Gregor Typho, protesting Yoda's plea to save Luminara and Barriss on Ilum, saying it will interfere with the mission they are already on. But, Yoda, uses a mind trick to get him to say that it will only be a slight detour and jeopardize the mission (really like the fact that he speaks like Yoda while he's tricked). C-3PO and R2-D2 realize what is going on, but Padmé is able to figure it out. She agrees to help Yoda and the ship heads to Ilum. Yoda destroys several of the chameleon droids and is able to make it to the still trapped Luminara and Barriss.
Chapter 16: This episode concludes the mission to Ilum. Padmé is concerned that Yoda hasn't returned, but both Typho and C-3PO assure her that Yoda will be fine. When Typho goes back on the ship to check the communications array, Padmé heads off to find Yoda, asking both C-3PO and R2-D2 to come with her. She is ambushed by three chameleon droids, but is able to destroy them, with a little help from C-3PO acting as a decoy. Shortly after this, Yoda returns with Luminara and Barriss and says that the cave temple has been nearly destroyed. R2 is able to patch into a chameleon droid to find that Dooku was the one who reveled Ilum's location to the Separatists.
Chapter 17: We jump back to Anakin's story, with the Azure Angel jumping out of hyperspace and landing on a nearby moon. This moon is Yavin 4, the same jungle moon that housed the main Rebel base in A New Hope. Anakin himself would return here as Vader when the Death Star follows the Millennium Falcon to the base. The clones land soon after Anakin and he orders them to fan out and search the jungle. While doing this, they are taken out one by one by an unseen enemy. When Anakin realizes something is wrong, he returns to the landing site only to see the troop transport and his starfighter explode, which unfortunately also destroys his droid, R4-P22. After the explosion, Ventress reveals herself, claiming that Anakin's fall will be her ascension to the Sith.
Chapter 18: This is another really light episode, with the whole episode consisting of Ventress and Anakin's duel through the jungles of Yavin 4. We do get to see some of the Massassi ruins as they're fighting though. The Massassi were a subspecies of the Sith species who were enslaved by exiled Dark Jedi on the Sith's homeworld of Korriban (known as Moraband in The Clone Wars, Yoda goes there in season 6). Their Great Temple is the ruin we see in this episode and is the same ruin that the Rebels use as their base in A New Hope.
Chapter 19: This episode shows the conclusion of Ventress and Anakin's duel on Yavin 4. Ventress knocks Anakin's lightsaber out of his hand, but he grabs her arms to block her from dealing her killing blow. Anakin squeezes her arm with his mechanical one until she drops one of her lightsabers and becomes filled with rage, which he uses to overpower Ventress and force her off of the temple roof. During his rage filled strikes, we see visions of Anakin's masters flash in the air: first Qui-Gon Jinn, then Obi-Wan Kenobi, and finally Yoda. After Ventress falls into the chasm, Anakin throws her other lightsaber into the chasm after her.
Chapter 20: Finally we get to the last episode in Volume 1. This shows the end of the Battle of Muunilinst. We get an appearance of Voolvif Monn, a Shistavanen Jedi Master. The Shistavanen are a wolf-like species of humanoids from the planet Uvena Prime, colloquially nicknamed wolfmen due to their appearance (hence the Jedi's name, Voolvif Monn= Wolf Man). We actually first saw a Shistavanen as a background character in the cantina in A New Hope. After the battle is won, Obi-Wan gets an urgent distress call from a human Jedi Master named Daakman Barrek on the planet Hypori, saying that his forces have been wiped out by a new droid general. The signal cuts out, presumably after Master Barrek meets his end. We then go to Hypori and see thousands of droids encircling a crashed Acclamator ship, where we see several Jedi trapped in the wreckage. They are Master Ki-Adi-Mundi who we know from the 3D series and the movies, Master Aayla Secura, who we also know from the movies and the 3D series, Master Shaak Ti, again who we know from the other media, along with three other Jedi we haven't seen before. The other Cerean Jedi, Tarr Seirr (the younger one with the head wrappings), Master Barrek's human Padawan Sha'a Gi, and Jedi Master K'Kruhk, a member of the Whiphid species. Whiphids are a long lived species from the planet Toola. K'Kruhk is a very well known character in the old Legends timeline, being present for many significant events in galactic history. And you were right, Sha'a Gi is indeed modeled after Shaggy Rogers from Scooby Doo, from his look to his very timid demeanor. He was originally planned to sound like Shaggy too, but ultimately Genndy Tartakovsky realized that the voice didn't fit and became "too goofy." Sha'a Gi was voiced by the legendary voice actor John DiMaggio who you might know as Bender from Futurama, Jake from Adventure Time, and numerous other roles. Of course, the biggest reveal in this episode was General Grievous, making his very first appearance in Star Wars with this episode, also voiced by John DiMaggio. Grievous appears very different from his movie and 3D animated counterpart, being shown as much more menacing and deadly as he quickly makes work of most of the Jedi, killing Sha'a Gi instantly as he runs from cover in a panic and hiding inside the wrecked ship, where he proceeded to severely wound Master K'Kruhk and kill Tarr Seirr, while also badly wounding Shaak Ti. The episode ends with Grievous leaping at Ki-Adi-Mundi and Yoda back on Coruscant sensing a disturbance in the Force, saying that the coming storm is growing darker and that the dark cloud of the Sith shrouds them all.
Whew, that was a lot of stuff to go over but we finally made it! Volume 2 is up next and, while there are only 5 more episodes, they are also 4-5 times longer than each of these episodes, so we'll have about another hour of content to go through. But I got through these, I think we can get through 5 more. See you guys next time for Volume 2! 😀
Ah, the superior clone wars experience, along with the dark horse comics and books that came out around the same time.
the 3D animated one doesn't belong in the same continuity as the original Clone Wars multi-media project
I can fit the CG Clone Wars into the 2D Clone Wars. Anyone want to know how?
The best star wars series
This is the better clone wars show.
Maybe it's because you just finished ATLA but I just noticed the voice of Padme is also Azula's VA. Never caught that even though I've re-watched this and ATLA many many times.
😯 didn’t know that
Will you guys be doing Star Wars Rebels soon?
THIS is the Grievous I love! Not my absolute favourite tho.. That love is reserved for the Grievous from the Comic books
