I found out about Auntie Abbey watching “Nothing But a Man (1964).” I fell in-like with her in that movie. Then I fell in-love with her after watching “For Love of Ivy (1968). Then I venerated to her stylistic delivery through Jazz. Never be another like her🫶🏾🫡-ASÉ
One of the true icons of African American Classical Music, Aminata Moseka Abbey Lincoln gives me goose pimples each and every time I hear her voice, whether it's talking on the phone or singing anywhere, live, on a recording or in a video like this one. Thank you LaShonda Barnett for this memorable documentation of one of Earth's most loving characters.
I first saw her in Nothing but a Man in the early 90's. I had no idea for years she was a singer. Since then I have soaked in her Jazz/Soul career with great joy. What a dear heart she has. Absolutely the best!
I saw Abbey perform several times, and was fortunate to eventually get to know her a bit. Unlike some of these modern, self-important African-American pundits, Abbey was inclusive and she was kind. I miss her.
Truly one of the giants. Perhaps my favorite jazz vocalist of all time.
