I was absolutely able to tell the difference, but I had them completely swapped! I pegged the wooden one as metal, and the metal as wood, which really amazes me because I've played the clarinet for over twenty-five years. O.o;;
Wow!!!! That's like the ultimate testament to how similar they sound. I had a hard time telling them apart too in post. Keep up the awesome clarinet-ing!
Same happened to me. The difference vs. your comment is that I am a bansuri flute player and had never ever thought of clarinets I just purchased a hand made all wood "wooden" clarinet.
As a clarinet player myself, I honestly couldn’t tell the difference at all. I was expecting a more brass instrument-like sound, but I was surprised by how much it sounded like a normal clarinet. I’ve only been playing the clarinet for 5 or 5 1/2 years, so there’s actually still a lot I don’t know when it comes to the instrument. I definitely have to work on audiation, as well as being able to play altissimo range better. I didn’t even know completely metal clarinets existed, so thank you for exposing me to this
For sure! That's actually why I made the video because they sounded a lot more similar than I was expecting too when I finally got my hands on a metal one.
Me and my perfectly trained ears: 1. A clarinet 2. That's a clarinet 3. Definitely a clarinet 4. A clarinet 5. A guy playing a clarinet 6. Maybe... A clarinet? That's what I call a perfect score u.u (Jokes aside, I like this format! And after your explanation, *maybe* I was even able to perceive the difference in sounds. However, just in case you wanted to replicate a similar video with other instruments, a quick, optional demo of the two before the actual game would be higly appreciated. In this way, even uneducated people like me could still play the game according to what they had the heartwarming illusion to grasp from the brief introduction).
Haha yes I love your responses!! 😂 Definitely a good idea! The reason I didn't do it before was I wanted to hammer the point home that they sound pretty damn similar. Which even I found surprising because they LOOK so different. I may do another one of these with my wood and metal flutes
I got it right on all of them but only because I suspected the metal clarinet sounded more resistant due to not sealing well. I play on hard rubber clarinets. I’ve learned a long time ago that the material matters little compared to the design.
The metal clarinet is pretty awesome but I think I prefer the sound of the wood clarinet better. Watching your clarinet vids has made me want to pick up playing clarinet again!
That's quite interesting. Could hear the difference especially the timbre near the throat notes, the metal clarinet tends to be a little blaring around the throat notes. I find that over all intonation is much better on the wooden one. It's less distinct between the 2 in the lower register notes.
I just came into possession of a really old Gretch Pathfinder metal clarinet. If the serial records are to be believed then that Gretsch was made in 1898. It’s sat in a junk yard for a lot of years, the silver plating is heavily tarnished and in some places completely worn through. It’s going to take a lot of time to fix but these instruments are so cool that I feel I have to fix it
I got it! One sounded more airy to me & I guessed that it was the metal one. Did I really know? no. lol. I'm quite impressed on the sound & quality of the metal clarinet.
Easy. I think it would be harder to tell ebonite vs wood but metal has a more focused, but less resonant and warm tone, especially with more pronounced overtones. It's not a huge difference in the recording but enough to tell.
Good job, To be a true, accurate comparison test (especially conducted blind), all sample sound bytes should (at the very least) played in the same register and preferably the same passage and dynamics and articulations.
Nailed it! I prefer the wood on soprano clarinets, much darker tone. Now, on contrabass clarinet I prefer metal and actually really dislike the sound of the model 41. I'd take a paperclip over it any day. I feel like the brighter sound really makes it a little more punchy in a group.
I noticed soon that one was projecting less. As a (n amateur) singer, I'm trained to assess projection as I am supposed to have as much as possible. Then, remembering how the xylophone and the vibraphone sound, I pegged 2 and 5 correctly to the wooden one. Number three I wasn't sure. All in all, I deem myself satisfied.
Ah you've got it precisely! The tone is generally similar to clarinet (the point that I wanted to get across is that metal clarinet =/= soprano saxophone). But the metal clarinet tone is brighter and doesn't project as well. Thanks for watching!
Me and my perfectly trained ears: 1. A clarinet 2. That's a clarinet 3. Definitely a clarinet 4. A clarinet 5. A guy playing a clarinet 6. Maybe... A clarinet? That's what I call a perfect score u.u
The metal clarinet sounds like it might do better with a different reed and/or mouthpiece. Still, it has a very interesting, mellow sound despite being metal. Curious what metal it is actually made of to have such low resonance.
I love the sound of the wooden clarinet and I've noticed that the metal clarinet seemed to have a mix of between sax and clarinet sound. I know this because I do play the Clarinet and also sax not the tenor but the one smaller then a tenor sax.
Thank you for making this, I've been thinking of ways to make a fully metal ensemble sound still using woodwinds and strings and this provided a lot of insight. Soon enough I'll get my own metal clarinet Though I'm a brass player so idk how well I'll be at playing it lol
In my 1920s jazz orchestra the sax players double on clarinets. When they pick them up after a break, they are always low. Even in recordings be the best orchestras from the period, you hear clarinets that are too low. Could I avoid this problem by switching to metal clarinets?
Just got one for Christmas lol. I haven’t brought it to the shop yet and also don’t have any reeds cause I currently haven’t had any reed instruments prior. But I’m excited to learn how to play it

This is such a fun video! I only got 2 correct- it seems you make the metal clarinet sound more like wood? What reeds do you use? Thank You for sharing:)

There is a difference but its not extremely obvious: perhaps if you didnt pay attention (if it wasnt a test) you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. So what confuses me now is what makes a saxophone and clarinet sound very different. I mean a sax is a conic tube and clarinet is a straight tube but why would that make such a big difference.
I could tell them apart, but that’s probably also because I have a metal clarinet and have played them before. The stencils are OK but not spectacular as long as they are in good repair, but if you actually have a good professionally made one, they actually can be just as good or better than a wood, especially if you’re in marching band they are great since they are not as subject to pitch changes from the weather and such. My HN white easily compares to my Leblanc imo.
I didn't recognize just n. 4 correctly 😀. Good result I think! Wooden clarinet suits me more 🙋. I like you are still so playful! (In all meanings of that word😁).
The other day I had a thought. "Would a metal clarinet just basically be a saxophone." I kept this thought to my self but the algorithms telepathy lead me here.
So i think the difference is metal gets a cleaner sound, like a tuning fork, while wood seems to have more of a mix of frequencies. It seemed to work as a method to guess
I had them mixed up several times and I thought one sounded both better and worse than the other during the different passages. Specifically I preferred 1, 3, 4 and 5. So basically I can't tell the difference.
In my orchestration class and compare the sound of metal clarinet to soprano saxophone. Then I explain to them it is actually the difference between cylindrical and conical, and the material it is made out of makes zero difference.

Good postulation! Sadly I can't measure the bore size but that could be the case. It also could be that the metal clarinet doesn't seal as well and therefore can't resonate as fully in the lower register
@@InstrumentManiac Thanks for your comment. I did a bit more research. Seems the answer is quite straight forward. The Q factor for metal is higher than the Q factor for wood. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_factor#Acoustical_systems

I was so able to tell the differance. I can see why metal clarinets are not popular in a way, it is so much weaker sounding than the wooden ones. True! Old pads and limited repair-ability are what really dooms the instrument.
It's more of a fun toy than anything else 😂
I don't think the difference is that strong, but I definitely do feel as though the wooden clarinet has a richer, fuller sound.

They're fun! But yeah not really functional when resin sounds better and is the same price
@@InstrumentManiac yeah definitely, There was that phase though where Instrument Makers thought it would work, but really was a fail.
How can people not tell I don't even play clarinet!
I could definitely tell. The metal one has a sharper and less smooth sound than the wood one.
Well, I got 4/6 right. But they sounded pretty similar to me!
1. Wood
2. Metal
3. Wood
4. Wood
5. Metal
6. Metal
I had no idea tbh (?)
Yas queen good!! You should do this with wood and metal pianos 😂
what is the fourth song?
1 metal
2 wood
3 wood
4 wood
5 wood
6 ?????
I think I had the 1st 3 right but
I was not sure about the last 3 do but yeah I did my best shot no cheating just like you said luke but hey I did have a little fun with it not much to say thay don’t Sound any that different to me any way I was just testing my self to just playing that game anyway good video that was cool!
Good job!! Yeah it's actually pretty hard to tell the difference which I thought was kind of a cool conclusion. Hope you had fun playing!
It would have been better if you played the same thing on each instrument in the same register so we can hear the difference. The metal clarinet is out of tune.
