The open box one you got was absolutely borked, you did good taking it back to bestbuy and get a new one. Those artifacts mean the GPU is about to go so I guess in a couple months or so tops you would've had a brick in your hands.
Got mine for excellent condition open box. I opened the box before leaving snd the left joystick was grinded into the shell. Returned snd got a better one that was in actual excellent condition. Even had a screen protector installed.Its supposed to have the charger included unless it says the accessories are missing
It was pulling nearly 72W from a 65W power brick. I'm surprised it did not trip overcurrent protection. Most chargers only allow 10% or so above their rating before they trip.
Same!! My anker prime power banks are proving to be mandatory for this thing. That 40Wh battery is just not enough for 25w gaming.
I bought one but the left joystick malfunction since it’s very common with small drops. Got my money back and bought the legion go . Man, that legion go is literally the best handheld I’ve owned. P.S I had the stem deck and ROG ally .
Love my rog ally never had any problems with it the only thing I like about the Go is it bigger screen everything else is worse then rog ally

I bought my rog ally z1 extreme at Best Buy too and I bought the good condition one cause that was all that they had in stock in the extreme model so I bought it for 475 and the charger was not in the box. I tested everything including the sd card slot everything worked I had to call asus about registration cause the person before me registered it after almost a month I went to use a sd card and it no longer works lol just my luck. But that’s not a issue cause I upgraded the nvme ssd to 2 tb I love it but soon as my warranty is close to ending I will swap the ssd back and send it in for repair
Yup, I upgraded mine to 2tb! They had the 2tb wd black on sale and I couldn’t resist. Under 200 bucks after taxes for 2tb.
Were they really that lazy to not wipe the screen

Glad you returned the open box one. Either the GPU or the part of memory that is allocated to the GPU is dying. It would of only caused you issues later down the line even if they did go away with driver updates.
And thats funny about the sale. Normally the world works the other day, and you find out the sale ended the day before you came in or something like that.
But yeah def get a 2TB SSD. I put a 2TB corsair drive in my Lenovo legion go. I went for the legion because i really hate controllers and so mostly use it as a gaming tablet with the controllers removed and a BT keyboard and mouse. And atleast the ROG lets you set it up on the device. I dunno if mine was glitched or something but i could not get the onscreen keyboard to open during windows setup so had to use a USB keyboard. I was ready for that so i could do the bypassnro command to not have to deal with a microsoft account.
Also i dont know much about the ally. that is odd that some powerbanks/chargers can do the turbo mode and some cant. I would of thought that any charger that supplied enough power would work with it. At least on my Lenovo i have not found any sort of issues like that. I can run it in the custom 30w performance mode on any charger. But what it does do. Is sort of just turn off the battery charge while you are running it under high loads. So the unit in total will pull about 50w from the charger and its using all of that. Maybe just tiny trickle charging the battery, as soon as you close your game or whatever though it clicks back over to charging the battery.
The lenovo doesnt like low wattage chargers at all though. It wont even show any charger is plugged in if its under 50w i think. And it can get stuck in this annoying 'am i charging you, or are you charging me' back and forth argument with some of my powerbanks that only have the one bi directional PD port.

Did you get a new one btw or a working replacement? sorry you had that experience. i had a bad experience with my first brand new one it burned out the SD card after i had upgraded the SSD to 2 terabytes so had to put the old SSd back and return it. Thankfully Currys Pc world in the UK replaced it there and then and got one of the newer ones where the SD card reader was fine and it doesn't get mad hot like that first one did, So I feel your pain mate. But had a great experience with this one I have now. so sure you will be fine., Probably should watch the whole video before commenting but hey ho.
Lmao. That's so funny. I actually returned it two days ago because the rog ally x is a couple weeks away!! And I didn't need both. I will get getting the X!
@@wwjoshdew yeah good idea. I bought mine 8 months ago so kinda stuck with it. I have 2 LCD steamdecks as well bought one 2 weeks before the OLED was announced. I didn't know if you could just return it like that.
I don't mind being stuck with it co's it's kind of a rog ally X anyway with 3 terabytes with the SD card and extra power bank. I would like a black one, If it turns out to be vastly better performing and stability etc I may save up. but have 2 steam decks and a Rog ally already. Don't want to have 2 Rog allys as well. too lazy to list one on ebay lol.
I Bought the first steamdeck used and it had a problem so bought a new one then they fixed the problem the first one had with a software update lol. so ended up with 2 perfectly fine steamdecks. And no sooner the 2nd one arrives they announced the Damn OLED. Don't have much luck me lol.
Wait. I got lost. Which power bank performed the best? ROG ally shows up in a couple of days and I need to be ready! 😅
Former BBY employee. Open boxes on these products are usually just returns within the return window. typically 2 weeks unless they have a longer membership window or a manager took it out of policy. Sometimes missing stuff like you experienced with the charger but otherwise they get "tested "by the Geeksquad agents at the store. Typically just making sure they pass a diagnostic test and spot checking them. I felt the same way and avoided open box until I learned this stuff working there. Was definitely worth a shot as these problems can exist in new models. Hope it helps :)

@fightnight14 go to my asus on the device and try to register it. They will tell you no if it's been registered already along with the date. Does it matter, though? It's been out a year and it has a two year warranty.

ROG ally and Anker prime has me laughing every time i see posts about Rog Ally battery being crap. I played kingdom come deliverence for 2 hours in the park running the Rog ally at 30 watts on m anker prime and still had 28% of the anker prime battery left and 100% of my Rog ally internal battery. When out and about i never use my internal battery and same at home co's plugged in. Rog ally and anker prime battery is crazy amount of battery life and I have a SWIQU battery in my Jsaux carry case full up and ready to go if I need it. lol and failing that I often take my steamdeck with me if on a trip etc. as a backup. So yeah I laugh at comments putting down ROG battery life. I never use it.
My SIWIQU battery only does 25 watts though lol. only. Oh open box? you had a bad experience I guess. I only buy brand new me.

how many power banks i need to give it juice for 12 hrs? my car with 12 volt charger charges the ally with turbo mode...the bus i drive at work 24 system same charger for my car is not strong enough...i need i.m guessing 4 to 6 power banks:))
