In my personal head canon, HBO David was a serial killer/cannibal in the before times. Now, he’s living his best life with his own post apocalypse flock.
Woohoo! These last two episodes are so intense. David, the cannibal cult leader, is really the only "truly evil" character in the story, everyone else is just trying to survive but David enjoys hurting people and is crazy like that. It also is an interesting commentary on humanity that in any apocalypse or big disaster, it's always other people that are the biggest threat. The ending is one of the reasons the game has remained popular for 10 years, it's so thought provoking and morally ambiguous. Interestingly enough, the game studio has said that when they first released the game and asked people who play-tested the game what they thought of the ending and if Joel made the right choice, that folks were split 50/50 if they didn't have kids, but folks that DID have kids were 100% in agreement that Joel did the right thing - and I love that and think that is such a perfect example of what changes in people when they have kids. No parent out there would be okay sacrificing THEIR kid like that - especially without talking to them and giving them a chance to make the choice for themselves. And given that it was risky anyway, it's entirely possible that the doctor could have killed Ellie, harvested the cordyceps from her brain and still failed to be able to make a cure out of it. So the risk was just too great. And yes, they are working on a second season based on the events of the second game. No announcement when it'll be out yet but hopefully next year. Glad you guys loved the show - it's so good. Cheers

He wasn't an hypocrite, his selfish decision is human from the root. There was only one to save there: Ellie. That world, even this world isn't worth saving. Really, what's great about this story is that there's never a right or wrong, it's just people making choices and understanding from their perspective. Obviously, as a father, I'm choosing my child over the world, full stop. And Ellie eventually understands this as well.

The messed up thing about the ending is that for all the talk The fireflies did, they didn't even give Ellie a choice in what she wanted to do. They just decided they were gonna use her like a guinie pig with no guarantee her sarcifce would even work. Joel, on the other hand, cared enough to give her the option to keep going on head back to Tommy's and live her life.

I never played the game and didn't know anything about the story before I watched this show and, like you, was really pleased how the pieces fit together in the end. The acting was really terrific and I ended up totally enjoying it, I'm glad you did too.

@@blubirdhill2608 Ellie is as smart as me, and when I was 14 I had and still have better mindset than 70 percent of "first" world population. I think she'd have been perfectly conscious about all that her sacrifice would have meant, for "humanity" and for Joel, even though they'd not have been able to find a cure to cordyceps and she'd die for nothing. The part 2 game... And I don't say more. That said, I completely agree with Joel, no F doubt, even with part 2 implications, Joel did the absolute right thing.
The noise Asia made when David brought that meat cleaver down beside Ellie's head 😅 Also, I think Ellie just keeps chopping David because all her pent up anger, loss and trauma came out in the one moment. A loss of any innocence she had left.
OMG you just reminded me of a video I watched on TH-cam. I downloaded it, and saved it, in my PC years ago, but don't remember the name nor youtuber's. An analysis that made me cry, even when popping to my head. Beautiful.
Marlene was hypocritical saying it wasn’t Joel’s choice either… when it was her that took that choice away first. Also, the Fireflies just went straight nuclear option - kill Ellie for MAYBE a cure. They have barely any resources and haven’t tried anything non lethal first. They are as militant in their cause as Joel is. Plus Joel has been a father. He knows a traumatised child can’t make that kind of decision to sacrifice herself with full mental capacity. Only option would have been to keep Ellie alive until she’s in a position to make that choice and meanwhile at least try other methods. But Marlene didn’t give her that choice so Joel did what he did. I agree with his choice. I don’t agree with him lying to Ellie about it though. She knows he lied… and that’s going to be a problem in the future.
Plus, at the beginning of Ep 1 and Ep 2, the two experts/mycologists who study fungi said there would be no vaccine or medicine if humans can somehow be infected by fungi. Also, after 20 years the world is basically in shambles, and I can't see how one random doctor is going to develop a cure and/or vaccine, manufacture it and distribute it. Joel's only option was to save Ellie. Sadly, I won't be watching S2 because someone wrote about a major spoiler, but I loved S1.

I’m just thinking about the fact that this last episode was bookended by two lies, both of which kept Ellie alive. It’s sad that their relationship which had been built on absolute trust had to be compromised. But Joel is hellbent on not losing Ellie. Very interesting moral dilemma. Anyway, two cool facts. I’m sure you know by now this is based on a video game. “Buddy boy” was the actor who played Joel in the game. And Ellie’s mom actually played Ellie in the game. Having played the game, it made the birth scene that much more emotional. Watching video game Ellie literally give birth to tv show Ellie gave me chills.
I think it’s great that the actress who played Ellie in the game is the actress who plays Ellie’s mother and in episode 8 also the guy Ellie kills with the cleaver right before she is killed on the table is played by the actor who played Joel in the video game

Thank you for finishing up this series. Love the game and love this show. The ending with Ellie explaining to Joel what she has gone through with the deaths of Riley, Tess and Sam were to reflect her feelings of guilt due to her being immune. Joel interrupted her just like in the game at this point to stop her from discussing what happened at the hospital. Ellie wanted Joel to know that she wanted to help to bring a cure to save others no matter what. And thus her friends deaths wouldn't be for nothing. Major survivor's guilt, just like Joel. Ellie and Marlene had no idea she would need to die to make a cure. Marlene only found out upon Ellie's arrival, per the Doctor. Despite Joel's lies about what happened in the hospital, Ellie does not believe Joel. Ellie gave Joel one more opportunity to tell her the truth about what happened with the fireflies. And why she was drugged and wearing a medical gown if they said they were no longer looking for a cure. Things were not adding up and she knew it. So she asks Joel to promise that what he said about the fireflies was true. Joel doubled down and said, I promise. Remember this for season 2+ Despite what most people had to say about whether it's wrong or right to sacrifice a child for a cure. I decided to just address what Ellie's thoughts were in the end.

They had the game-Ellie, game-Tommy and the people who did the clicker motion cap for the game too. Probably more of them along the way... It was a great nod to the people who originally made the game. Paying homage to the core material like that is always a good move. Especially with a games as popular as these.
I highly suggest u guys watch play throughs of part 2 it's bittersweet but it's good❤. And dealing with the end, Joel still pictures Sarah as the age she died as 😭. Not remembering she's waaay older than ellie.
the one thing i wish they made more clear was show the xray and how the fungus had grown through and around her brain ..because brain surgery isnt always fatal but in this case would be .they show that in the game but not the show

I'm just going to say it: Joel's decision was fantastically selfish. One life versus bringing mankind back from the brink of extinction? Even if there was only a chance and not a surefire solution, it's still worth one life (how many people have died and are still dying from cordyceps and the fallout?). And giving Ellie the decision has the same selfishness, especially if Ellie would decide to stay alive. Imagine the guilt she would deal with for the rest of her life, or, if she decides to give her life, the pain and fear of her last minutes. I'm sure many of you agree with Joel, and I respect the impulse, so don't be a dick to me for being logical and rational. We are allowed to disagree 🙂
The Last Of Us is about the danger of unconditional love. Sometimes, when you love someone unconditionally, logic goes out the window and you will do really horrible things to protect the ones you love.
The things is, taking the cordyceps from Ellie's brain was only a theory and there was no guarantee that it will work. Maybe if they were to drill to take a sample, maybe? I still wouldn't bet on Ellie's life for it if I was Joel.
I loved the development of Joel and Ellie's relationship. By the end of the first season, you can see Joel is papa bear and will stop at nothing to keep Ellie safe.
Throughout the series, everyone "loves" how Joel and Ellie's relationship develops, so I'm not sure why some folks are surprised that Joel would do anything to save Ellie.
You really should watch one of the game vs movie comparisons on youtube. It’s very interesting to see what they chose to change. Can’t wait for season 2. It’s a controversial take but I prefer the story in part 2

Bella Ramsey has been phenomenal the whole series, hell everyone has, but her acting in episode 8….she absolutely deserves every award.
I agreed with Joel’s decision in the game, and I still stand by it in the show. There’s no cure for the cordyceps, and sacrificing people for a worthless experiment is just a waste. I had fun watching you guys react to this.

@@blubirdhill2608 Ellie is as smart as me, and when I was 14 I had and still have better mindset than 70 percent of "first" world population. I think she'd have been perfectly conscious about all that her sacrifice would have meant, for "humanity" and for Joel, even though they'd not have been able to find a cure to cordyceps and she'd die for nothing. The part 2 game... And I don't say more. That said, I completely agree with Joel, no F doubt, even with part 2 implications, Joel did the absolute right thing.

OMG you just reminded me of a video I watched on TH-cam. I downloaded it, and saved it, in my PC years ago, but don't remember the name nor youtuber's. An analysis that made me cry, even when popping to my head. Beautiful.
Marlene was hypocritical saying it wasn’t Joel’s choice either… when it was her that took that choice away first. Also, the Fireflies just went straight nuclear option - kill Ellie for MAYBE a cure. They have barely any resources and haven’t tried anything non lethal first. They are as militant in their cause as Joel is.
Plus Joel has been a father. He knows a traumatised child can’t make that kind of decision to sacrifice herself with full mental capacity. Only option would have been to keep Ellie alive until she’s in a position to make that choice and meanwhile at least try other methods. But Marlene didn’t give her that choice so Joel did what he did. I agree with his choice. I don’t agree with him lying to Ellie about it though. She knows he lied… and that’s going to be a problem in the future.
Plus, at the beginning of Ep 1 and Ep 2, the two experts/mycologists who study fungi said there would be no vaccine or medicine if humans can somehow be infected by fungi. Also, after 20 years the world is basically in shambles, and I can't see how one random doctor is going to develop a cure and/or vaccine, manufacture it and distribute it. Joel's only option was to save Ellie. Sadly, I won't be watching S2 because someone wrote about a major spoiler, but I loved S1.

Unless they decide to change that particular thing… I doubt it, but I know a lot of the gamers who played season 2 weren’t happy about it either so maybe… but I’ll wait to hear first before I bother investing in it.

I’m just thinking about the fact that this last episode was bookended by two lies, both of which kept Ellie alive. It’s sad that their relationship which had been built on absolute trust had to be compromised. But Joel is hellbent on not losing Ellie. Very interesting moral dilemma. Anyway, two cool facts. I’m sure you know by now this is based on a video game. “Buddy boy” was the actor who played Joel in the game. And Ellie’s mom actually played Ellie in the game. Having played the game, it made the birth scene that much more emotional. Watching video game Ellie literally give birth to tv show Ellie gave me chills.
I think it’s great that the actress who played Ellie in the game is the actress who plays Ellie’s mother and in episode 8 also the guy Ellie kills with the cleaver right before she is killed on the table is played by the actor who played Joel in the video game

The ending with Ellie explaining to Joel what she has gone through with the deaths of Riley, Tess and Sam were to reflect her feelings of guilt due to her being immune. Joel interrupted her just like in the game at this point to stop her from discussing what happened at the hospital. Ellie wanted Joel to know that she wanted to help to bring a cure to save others no matter what. And thus her friends deaths wouldn't be for nothing. Major survivor's guilt, just like Joel.
Ellie and Marlene had no idea she would need to die to make a cure. Marlene only found out upon Ellie's arrival, per the Doctor. Despite Joel's lies about what happened in the hospital, Ellie does not believe Joel.
Ellie gave Joel one more opportunity to tell her the truth about what happened with the fireflies. And why she was drugged and wearing a medical gown if they said they were no longer looking for a cure. Things were not adding up and she knew it.
So she asks Joel to promise that what he said about the fireflies was true. Joel doubled down and said, I promise.
Remember this for season 2+
Despite what most people had to say about whether it's wrong or right to sacrifice a child for a cure. I decided to just address what Ellie's thoughts were in the end.
In many ways Joel sees Ellie as his redemption and a second daughter he ain't going to let somebody take that away from him this time

It was a great nod to the people who originally made the game. Paying homage to the core material like that is always a good move. Especially with a games as popular as these.

the one thing i wish they made more clear was show the xray and how the fungus had grown through and around her brain ..because brain surgery isnt always fatal but in this case would be .they show that in the game but not the show

I'm just going to say it: Joel's decision was fantastically selfish. One life versus bringing mankind back from the brink of extinction? Even if there was only a chance and not a surefire solution, it's still worth one life (how many people have died and are still dying from cordyceps and the fallout?). And giving Ellie the decision has the same selfishness, especially if Ellie would decide to stay alive. Imagine the guilt she would deal with for the rest of her life, or, if she decides to give her life, the pain and fear of her last minutes.
I'm sure many of you agree with Joel, and I respect the impulse, so don't be a dick to me for being logical and rational. We are allowed to disagree 🙂

I've been a fan since the game was out, and your thoughts on why Ellie is immune make the most sense of anything I've heard.
The things is, taking the cordyceps from Ellie's brain was only a theory and there was no guarantee that it will work. Maybe if they were to drill to take a sample, maybe? I still wouldn't bet on Ellie's life for it if I was Joel.
I loved the development of Joel and Ellie's relationship. By the end of the first season, you can see Joel is papa bear and will stop at nothing to keep Ellie safe.
Throughout the series, everyone "loves" how Joel and Ellie's relationship develops, so I'm not sure why some folks are surprised that Joel would do anything to save Ellie.
