    Curious, I have multiple carbide chisels for carving similar to yours.. but you had mentioned in another comment that you put a curvature on them.. do you actually use a green grinding wheel and put the curve in the carbide?

    • @AndysCornishCreations
      @AndysCornishCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Justin... Yes I have three different sized round ended chisels... I used square ended tungsten carbide tipped chisels and rounded them on a standard carberundem type bench grinder wheels ...not exactly sure what type... just the ones that came with the grinder.... but make sure that you keep the tip cool the whole time by quenching in water regularly.... if you are only using soft stone or limestone you can buy fire sharp/ cold steel chisels which you can buy with rounded tips... hope this helps... take care...All the best.....Andy

  • @rosysh.131
    @rosysh.131 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much. This is the best video I've found on TH-cam that helped me imagine the dimensions of the relief. Are all the chisels you used inside the pedals and leafs flat chisels? God bless you. Please wear a mask to protect your lungs on long term. Best regards.

    • @AndysCornishCreations
      @AndysCornishCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ro Ri ....thank you for your kind words.....the chisels that I use are tungsten carbide tipped chisels ranging from 5mm width tip to about 15mm ...all the chisels started out square ended but I have shaped several to be rounded...these are still flat but ground on the bench grinder...not quite a half circle...none of the chisels are gouges as this does not work on stone ...the limestone that I used is very soft and if you can get a similar stone then you can use tempered steel chisels which are much cheaper...you can also shape them as required.....when sharpening any chisel make sure you frequently quench them in water to keep them cool or you may loose the temper and they will get blunt quicker....hope this helps....All the best.....Andy

      @@AndysCornishCreations thank you so much for the great information. That's very useful. I have never used or encountered any round ended chisels. May I also check wether the purpose of using the rounded chisels is to give the stone the 3D effect without leaving traces of the sharp angles of the square ended chisels, is that correct?

    • @AndysCornishCreations
      @AndysCornishCreations  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rosysh.131 ...yes that is spot on...you can give the piece depth without the lines left with square ended chisels ....I have a couple of wood based videos on the go but I may do another stone carving video soon...perhaps carving basics....All the best.....Andy

    • @AndysCornishCreations
      @AndysCornishCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Don ... its very difficult to put a price on these things... £20.00 -£25.00 piece of limestone... half a days work ... and you are talking £80.00-£100.00 .. but you would be lucky to get that for it... not many crafts achieve the value that they deserve... • @AndysCornishCreations
      @AndysCornishCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Paul... the chisels don't have to be tungsten tipped.... it depends on what material you are carving... I used a soft limestone for the rose... it is a great stone to get started on and you can use fire sharpe chisels which are cheaper than tungsten tipped... I purchased the stone from... Southern Stone ... in Dorset... you can find them on Amazon... just type in southern stone... and it has choices of chisel sets with or without the same limestone that I used ... you can also use these chisels on sandstone and marble but be careful when buying these as both can be quite hard depending upon where they come from... I hope this helps and don't hesitate to ask if you need any more help...take care...All the best.....Andy
