  • A Place To Call Home - The opening track on Big Wreck’s fourth studio album Ghosts, kicks things off with a massive wall of guitar fuzz. When lead singer and guitarist Ian Thornley stopped by, we couldn’t help but ask how he achieved this tone. Ian was kind enough to share his approach in sculpting this sonic onslaught.

    Great album and this song was responsible for getting me to really appreciate fuzz.

      +atquinn1975 You caught my eye from their previous album is also killer, especially the Suhr live performance

      True. But I actually worked my way from Ghosts backwards (liked The Oaf and then never paid attention to them until watching the performances at Suhr this year), so this is the one I dug into first :D

    I thought I heard him say it was a compression peddle? Im trying to figure this song out (beginner here) and I get this same tone and thick sound using compression and distortion.. Am I missing something?

    • @stefanbukcev2249
      @stefanbukcev2249 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there are a lot of tunes that sound like they could be distortion, but they are actually fuzz. I hated using fuzz for probably my first 15 years playing. Then one day it just clicked. This tune is totally all fuzz pedal.

      @@stefanbukcev2249 thanks for the reply.. Still odd though, thornly discussed this song in a suhr interview and was talking compression. Though it is possible I remember it wrong... Too much internet that day : P

      @@ZeroMass You're not crazy. I believe he mentions using a compressor with a Rufus Reloaded in "The Captain Meets Ian Thornley" video which is an incredible interview from a few years back. Rolling the tone back on the guitar helps bring more of the octave effect but Andertons only had a standard Rufus.

    Ok, but the shirt, pants, and shoes are the same.... the only difference is the pedal... except... the amps of course. WTF? Why have two different amps if this is some kind of comparison. AND... I don't even see the comparison a/b of sounds? Is it headphones left channel is new Rufus and right channel old?

      Not a comparison. Just showing settings for that specific song
