    *SPOILER* A detail often overlooked is that Jennifer was only killed by needy because she wanted to die in needy's hands. She's a self healing floating demon who is very strong but it only took ripping their BFF necklace off for the real Jennifer to come back and let Needy drive the freaking box cutter ti her heart. Jennifer really loved needy and would rather die than hurt her or be someone she resented so much.

      So much this! There relationship is not healthy and it's deeply complicated but that is often part of young adults' and adolescents' friendships, let alone when they're dealing with not being straight, especially when these feelings are towards their friend. I am convinced Jennifer felt something for Needy, too, but just like her she isn't sure what that is and above all she does not want to lose control.

      There are definitely big actors who suffer for being too attractive, mostly women. Like yeah you're being paid very well but being sexualized to the point that Megan Fox was can be brutal. I don't know much about her but I doubt she started acting with the intention of becoming the first name people bring up as "hot famous chick" for like a decade. Being oversexualized in general can do a lot of damage, combine that with fame and you're bound to have some issues. I'm a straight dude, I like attractive female characters but it really bothers me how so many are presented as nothing more than that. It's taken me out of quite a few movies, all of the characters are acting like human beings until Generic Hot Female Human walks in and starts talking like an alien whose only experience with human conversations was through 70s porn intros. It's better nowadays but there's still a *long* way to go. The trope that attractive women are dumb and/or shallow is really harmful too, in a lot of cases it's a self fulfilling prophecy. I've seen it do a lot of damage to people I care about, it was even a big part of ruining someone's life. Sex appeal is a double edged sword, even the main benefits can lead to serious harm.

They make acting look effortless. Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Marilyn Monroe, to name a few. Effortless, God-given talented women who just happen to be incredibly sexy. That's the whole appeal of the beautiful women in cinema. It looks like she's just playing herself in the role.

      Yup, her and Britney Spears were done so damn dirty.
      Even Christina Aguilera has talked about how she fcked up and should have been on her side, especially after Justin and his manager....yeah.....
      Instead, Xtina's manager told her Nope, controversy sells- you were never childhood friends and you actually hate her guts now!
      Most of Megan's fans were too young to understand what was happening when she was finally calling out for help. Even Amanda Seyfried was like 'Yo, this is fcked up how she's being treated!' And everyone just ignored because she's so damn hot, and making money as an actress- she must like it right?

    I’ve seen people theorize that Jennifer reciprocated Needy’s feelings and that’s why she murders Collin and Chip- she was jealous of how her friend spoke of them. Later, at the pool, she tells Needy that she “goes both ways”. Even when Jennifer says she “found her way back” to Needy.
    I think this theory might be right, even if it wasn’t Diablo’s intention. Nonetheless, it was still a very toxic friendship with a horrible power dynamic.

  • @alexeifiore8573

    the way I always interpreted jennifer's shocked look when needy pulls off her bff necklace was that- a lot of times when we're in unhealthy relationships, whether that be friendships, marriage, family, etc., the person who's being toxic sees that they can push and push, and even if the one they're manipulating/abusing pushes back, they still stay and put up with it.
    so even though jennifer was literally about to attack/intimidate needy, after hurting chip at the pool, and got stabbed as a result, jennifer really thought it was all water under the bridge between her and needy, and likely expected needy to put up with her shit once again and get over it the next time she saw her. even when needy was actually trying to stab jennifer with a box cutter, I don't doubt that jennifer thought of it as just a little catfight or as needy being dramatic and needing to get her anger out of her system.
    so the fact that needy really showed symbolically that jennifer had crossed the final line, and that their friendship truly was over, and that needy was no longer going to be in her life, it just sucked all of her energy away. like- she finally realized needy wasn't playing around anymore and was truly going to cut her out of her life if either of them walked away from the fight alive. I don't think it was a "what have I done?" kind of moment- more so a "looks like I've finally done it" sort of thing.

And yes, I am a total snob now about everyone realizing that Megan and that movie are legendary. I hate the way she was treated. And to an extent I feel like she is still treated that way even now - everyone who's using her as a 'symbol of something' once again is not seeing her as a human being. Again. And she is such a good actress. I have defended that on the internet for years and always got mocked. Watch her SNL skits, she holds her own next to Kristen Wiig.

    I'm so glad you actually addressed the themes of assault on the movie. So many other reviewers on YT have glossed over this or completely ignored it in their commentary. They way that entire scene played out with the band and Megan always stuck with me.

    • @GreekDudeYiannis
      @GreekDudeYiannis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My issue with it is that in the final product, those themes barely get touched upon. They get mentioned, but they're not explored or elaborated upon. I get that that's because of studio meddling trying to force a movie made for girls into a movie marketed to boys, but the potential it could've had doesn't ultimately change the final product or make it better retroactively. One could even argue that the movie completely shits upon the idea of the band using/raping Jennifer to propel themselves forward because she ends up getting superpowers out of it (especially since she doesn't seemed perturbed that she has to kill people to maintain her x-men superpowers).

    • @SapphireBurns
      @SapphireBurns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@GreekDudeYiannis well she wasn't actually raped (unless it happened offscreen), but the sacrifice served as an allegory so they wouldn't explicitly say something. They used visuals instead. And I like that her character wasn't the most likable person as she was a bitch, nor was she "pure" since she wasn't a virgin, and she fit the stereotype of the "dumb bimbo slut". And despite that you still feel sorry for her because regardless of those things, she was still a young girl who didn't deserve to get sacrifice (or assaulted). The band's actions weren't justified and they thought she was just a tease anyway and the audience is on the side of Jennifer. And our society has a tendency to victim blame woman like Jennifer when they get assaulted as she was dumb, hot and promiscuous, so it was refreshing to see a victim who wasn't a pure sweet woman that we are supposed to feel sorry for.

    • @SapphireBurns
      @SapphireBurns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Honestly it hit home a little because I used to blame myself because I was sexually active and felt like I was responsible for my assault and that I didn't have the right to call myself an assault victim because I "put myself in that situation". Ik its not true now but I blamed myself for so long

    • @HeavenlyEchoVirus
      @HeavenlyEchoVirus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@GreekDudeYiannis I do think it is in there, it is just incredibly subtle and bleak. The night before the assault, Jennifer literally tells Needy that they have all the power, because of their bodies. She then uses her body to get free alcohol……..and then, is kidnapped and left for dead. It seems like it’s almost a comedic twist, but I don’t think it has to be read that way. Later Jennifer also says PMS is made up by the “boy run media” to make women seem crazy, and yet PMS is obviously very real-this along with Jennifer’s slightly misogynistic comments (directed at Colin and Needy in the film) imply that she is very much caught up in patriarchal ways of thinking while believing the opposite. Jennifer then has to consistently prove herself to be above men, and other women, and after the assault this intensifies and though in the film it’s demonic, it could be read as Jennifer’s way of coping and surviving. She is desperate to reprove her worth in the only toxic way she knows how. Meanwhile, Needy’s seemingly supportive boyfriend still NEVER believes her and only consistently downplays her worries, he even essentially pulls a Jennifer had what was coming to her line. Needy’s one recourse was her best female friend who she loved despite the volatility of their relationship (and alas, she was attacked by other girls for being too close with her) and after Jennifer is attacked, ultimately patriarchal society takes that and everything else away from her.
      Honestly there’s so much subtlety in this film, even the portrayals of class differences between characters which is so subtle and realistic and I frankly just don’t ever see it in films, I think nuance is in every little thing.

    • @fizzim1190
      @fizzim1190 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GreekDudeYiannis can you explain how the themes were barley touched upon? also wdym by elaborated or explored?
      and btw i think i can answer the ending part tho
      Jennifer got violated by men, and then her subsequent demon powers came from men, so it was contradictory, but in fact, a lot of people become more sexually active after being violated. It’s basically a trauma response. Something happened where control was taken from them, so they do what they can to feel in control again. That might be why she had to eat boys after she got sacrificed by boys/men. She ate them because they ate her first.
      the real reason why Jennifer, even with all her powers, never goes after the band on her own is because the writer, Diablo Cody, wrote this as a parallel to people who are survivors of sexual assault -- in most cases, they usually will end up passing on their trauma by traumatising other people, but will never confront their own traumatisers. That's what the real world looks like, not, as you suggested, a world of revenge-seeking warriors who have been wronged.

    Colin's death broke my heart, he really didn't deserve any of that. Honestly, if Jennifer was only eating shitty guys, I'd like the movie more. But she chose a grieving guy, a sweet emo kid, and her best friend's boyfriend. Made me SAD.

    EDIT: I wish Megan was given more roles beyond the hot girl role. It would have given her chances to build her craft with the right directors. I really enjoyed her role on New Girl.

    I'm fully guilty of watching the movie pretty much because I knew there was a scene where Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox kiss, and I had such a thing for Amanda Seyfried. The movie being so interesting and thought-provoking completely blindsided me. I really enjoyed it, and in fact the kissing scene was disturbing in context. Excellent stuff.

    It’s a shame this movie didn’t do better when it first came out. I went to the theatres to see it and fell in LOVE! Thank God that Danny, Kurtis AND Amanda all put out videos today.
    I needed all this because of my crappy week. If Amanda from Swell Entertainment and Drew Gooden post something today too, this will be perfect
    BTW, I liked Jennifer's Body. I was 15 when I watched this with my first boyfiriend (who has also 15) and even then, I appreciated it.
    It was wonderful. It still took me years to appreciate Jennifer though but I became Amanda's fan then (mind blown, I seem to keep liking Amanda's).

    This video made me cry tears of frustration with my childhood and the way misogyny was ingrained in me by forces beyond my control, and now I have to deal with the aftermath and try to figure things out. There's layers to it. I thought Jennifer's Body was a movie made for the male gaze because of the marketing and was made to feel/ convinced myself to feel disgusted by women's bodies because of an assortment of things like insecurity and religion, so I wanted to avoid any instance of seeing a woman's body which is impossible in mainstream media. And theeen I was also trying to figure out my bisexuality and being attracted to women while comparing myself to and judging them. I never watched Jennifer's Body, I never really had any connotations of it besides the initial dumb trailers I guess and shut it down, even though as a kid I had friends who liked it. It's so stupid and makes me so frustrated because it looks fucking awesome and gay and fun and like something I should have really enjoyed

    Because of the trailer I saw when I first saw this movie I thought it was gonna be awful, but I was on a Megan Fox movie marathon a few years ago so I watched and BOI I was wrong, I loved this movie so much I watch it every year and it's painful how dirty the marketing people did to it, I saw so many bad reviews of this movie back in the day I was sad because it became one of my favourite movies 😢 now I'm just happy people are seeing how great it is -kinda the same with megamind but that's an entirely different topic xd-

    I don't know if I just wasn't paying attention to the b.s. around it or if I assumed the marketing was garbage because of how rampant deceptive trailers were at the time, but I genuinely wanted to see this when it came out and loved it. Any time it got brought up I had to defend it. I HATE trailer companies. They caused so many films to end up getting panned because people went in expecting one thing and getting something completely different. Just fucking advertise the film for what it's supposed to be; people will come, and, go figure, they'll actually like it!
