Some people believe this story contradicts Gerald's madness in SA2 and the government were too quick to change their minds. But Id like to think this adds more layers to his character. All of his research was for the betterment of mankind and to cure his granddaughter of her disease by creating the ultimate lifeform. Once GUN went after him and everyone on the ARK, Maria was unfortunately one of the victims and it drove him mad. This story reveals he wanted to help all along, stopping Black Doom's ultimate plan, and now that GUN feels remorse for misjudging the doctor, they wish to create a better future in his honor since essentially, his fall to madness was by their own hands.
Sonic Battle’s journals (which you only see if you clear a character’s episode a second time so that coupled with being on the GBA, it’s understandable people wouldn’t know) are also pretty clear in showing that Gerald was of sound mind the whole time until the fateful day where Shadow was sent down to Earth and Maria died. Also pretty evident from SA2’s ending that the Gerald from Last Story wasn’t the same man that Eggman idolized growing up, that something had to have changed in him, and it’s been consistent with how in all of his 3D Sonic appearances (and one of the 2D ones in Advance 3) that he’s never been on board with the idea of destroying the world the way maddened Gerald and other god like beings before and after him have tried. Damaged it, split is apart, sure, but as he says in this very game and to paraphrase, “How can I take over the [world] if there is no [world]?”
That... Was... AWESOME! I can't wait to see more Sonic games. You just have to keep going and fighting for everything, and one day, you'll get to where you want to be.

That message was recorded BEFORE Maria was killed. Which also means before he went insane.

This game was not needed to explain this story to be honest. But i did like the rest of the completion of Gerald. But man nobody asked for this story.

How do you get the last story?
To unlock last story you have to finish the game and get different ending 10 times but in reloaded you’ll need 3 endings that’s it
