So glad you did this timely video. Still having lockup issues, but I'm not sure it's limited to that. I think it's worth replacing the whole damn thing at 180K. Thank you!
@@timjilman3295 hmm. That’s weird. You might want to ask around for a trans expert, see if that’s a thing. I could easily be wrong, but my understanding is it would be rare to have unlocking problem as opposed to the opposite.
@@promastersonly1419 Yeah, I thought about getting it into a shop, but I run this van 7 days a week and my truck is getting a revamp, which is taking too long because I run 7 days a week, figures. Weird thing is I still have no codes. I'm at the point where taking a weekend and swapping it is the least schedule busting option. Do you have any recommendations for a good replacement or reconditioned unit? Again, thank you for all your input.
@@timjilman3295 Myself and lots of my customers have the same “downtime” problem. My advice might be to look for a trans based on the warranty more than cost. I was looking at O’reillys transmission offerings, which may just be Jaspers for all I know. Keep your old core, have it and stick it on the shelf. If the new trans blows someday at least you know you’ve got a working core that will get you by.
Thanks for all your hard work putting these videos for the community! Do you need to do any computer resets after a transmission swap? I put in a rebuilt transmission and it kicks sometimes when shifting to or from reverse. Otherwise it works great. Just wanted to know your opinion Thanks.
In theory, doing a transmission relearn will help smooth out some shifts, but I honestly don't know if that would apply to reverse. But you dont need to do a relearn of any kind for it to be driveable. If I had to guess, I'd guess that since it's limited to R-D, it's likely that there's some slop in one of the two transmission mounts. Have a friend do some r to d while you observe the engine - is it lurching excessively?
@@promastersonly1419 no and it actually doesn’t happen all the time. I think for sure it happens if you switch r to d or back quickly Also it does kick (not too bad, but noticeable ) from 1 to 2. The rest are smooth I inspected the mounts and they are in very good shape If you would recommend doing a whole relearn, what tool(s) would you recommend ?
@@alexanderkasyanov4946 Most pro scanners (like a shop would have) can do a relearn. But I kinda doubt that will solve the problem, though it may lessen it. Have you inspected both axles?
@@promastersonly1419 well, when I did the tranny swap I pulled both axles out and they were in a pretty good shape. Anyway thanks for the idea. I’m gonna check all mounts, axles and suspension for any play and try doing a reset by pulling tcm fuse out
Try and get Dorman to offer a better flex plate with a slight increase in the gauge of steel used. Either harmonics or the twist from the torque transfer fatigues the stock flex plate. Should never happen if the plate is proper.
Not sure it’s necessary. Best I can figure a chronically cracking flexplate is due to misalignment from new. This one had 625,000 miles on it. I’ll be happy if I get another 625k!
It’s a leaky valve cover gasket that I’m too lazy to fix. To date, only ever seen one leaky rear main on a pentastar, and it was so slow it was ignorable.
@@05fordvan That refers to the 4 bolts that hold the mount to the trans - the part the long torx bolt goes into. You’re supposed to replace those if you have to take that off. Since I didnt have to remove that, I left that out of the video. I’ll make a separate video on that since I have another transmission job coming that requires it.
thank you its good stuff , i will remove my transmission just for fun now. Every video you made keep me away from stealership.
Not all heros wear capes. Some heros are greasy, sweaty, and pudgy!

Got the P0740,
Replacing the TC.
Experience has shown P0740 in isolation is almost always the converter itself.
Very good series, thank you.

Might be, though generally they will run forever without lockup.
@@promastersonly1419 Yeah, my issue is that it seems like it doesn't unlock. On occasion it will try to stall the engine at a light.

I didn't see mention of removing/installing torque converter bolts to flex plate. 🤷♂️
Both removing them and installing them is shown.
