In this hilarious and poignant podcast which finished recording just 12 days before Paul Ryder passed away and reached the number one position in the UK and Ireland Music Podcast charts, Paul opens up to tell his entire life story - the complete story of his time with the band he founded - Happy Mondays - detailing the triumphs as well as the terrible struggles he endured with addiction, mental health breakdowns and more. In this episode he forms a new band named by Ian Brown - Big Arm - and supports Ian on two tours. He describes almost getting arrested in New York during the filming of one of his videos, and actor Paul Popplewell, who played the part of Paul Ryder in the film 24 Hour Party People talks about the close bond they formed and Paul reveals the hilarious reason why he was particularly pleased that Paul Popplewell was given the role. Rock n Roll Mums Linda Ryder and Sandra Whelan give their less than enthusiastic review of the film. John Robb talks about working with Paul on an ITV show and Happy Mondays drummer Gaz Whelan talks about Paul's terrible stage fright. The episode ends with the dramatic fire breaking out that burned the family's French chateau. With special guests John Robb, Gary Whelan, Clint Boon, Phil Saxe, Linda Ryder, Sandra Whelan, Alan Howard, Rosemary Barratt, Pete Smith, Danny Short, Daz Gilkinson, Lea Mullin, John Pennington, aka Gianni Pannetone and Chris Connelly, aka Double Pudding and Chips.

I was invited to see Ian Brown and Big Arm at the Doncaster Dome, Dec 2007, courtesy of my ex-bassist/best man 'Stan' White (Groove Armada/John Squire/Faithless)... and after Big Arm had played I found myself sitting next to Paul throughout Ian's set... he was f'in loving it, particularly the new songs. Went backstage after the show, and Ian was, as always, a true gentleman. We got sat with Simon Moran and Paul, and during our conflab I told them about how one weekend in October 1987 I'd watched The Roses rehearsing in The International, the Happy Mondays gig in the Students Union (still got mi ticket, '£2.50'), and The La's jamming/soundchecking (also in The International)... a very memorable weekend, that ended with me almost dying from flu. 😁
Just want to say what a brilliant job you've done with these podcasts, and I hope they're eligible for some award or other.
'It's been emotional' doesn't quite cover it.

@@glisteningstories Taa, Angela! You'd have to be stone deaf not to appreciate Paul's musicianship. Stan was at my gaff a couple of days after Paul passed away, and, after banging a few of the classics on (my fave was always the Sounds E.P. version of 'Moving In With' - stupidly not included on the Bummed re-release) we both agreed he was one of the funkiest mothers, and reminisced about getting wrecked in The Ritz (cheaper than the Hac, and less nutters), bouncing on that dance floor to so many Mondays tunes. I could have elaborated on my further experiences, in Eden Studios, recording demos for Parlophone in 1997 (we were in at the same time as Kermit and Psycho, the nutters!), and at Chapel with Ewan Davies (who tape op'd the first Black Grape lp)... he'd got some stories, as had my old mate Pat Grogan (tape op at The Slaughterhouse during Bummed). :)
I'll be sat waiting on Sunday for Episode 14.

24 hour party people is a great film and an ideal entry point to the music of factory records to the uninitiated.. it's not meant to be an accurate documentary it is a comedy film based on the music and bands of factory records.. it fit perfectly of the time and era it came out post lock stock and human traffic

Its amazing that you managed to get all these people to talk on camera. So great you kept in Gaz and the Rock n Roll Mums. But also John Robb, and the guy from the movie. Great archive footage of you guys. Love the Big Arm guys and the mimick guy. Had no idea Paul was a bit of a wannabe actor. You'll be telling me next he was Batman's butler!
I feel Paul was searching for something his whole life, which he never found. Himself. I think it would be a perfect end if Shaun could at least close the final film with some words. He could say Paul was a complete kn*b sa*k - or a saint - it doesn't matter. Some closure would really help.

Thank you @lifeschool (what's your real name?) Yes the Big Arm boys are the best. I have an audition tape someone of Paul dressed as a butler! I'll try to find it! Re Shaun - That would have been really nice but I think it's highly unlikely.. x

@@glisteningstories - My name is Daniel Waddington, which is a village up near the Yorkshire dales, but you can call me Dan. I'm 47, and I used to be a speed freak and jive mover back in the day. They had a special name for the style but I cant remember it. I was looking at IMDB and it said Paul played Batman's Butler Alfred. Wth Shaun perhaps his mum can nag him every week.? All he needs to say is a few words. Giving the cold shoulder just proves Paul was absolutely right, and maybe Shaun caused his depression. I guess Bez would at least light an candle for him.

Having lived in Salford for a bit in the 90s I think 24 Hour Party People is a fantastic Performance. Steve Coogan did a Delightful job. Some scenes and locations were Egg-actly spot on. Gaz's mum seems Bummed about it but if she's not a Tap fan then, to me, Bob's Yer Uncle, you know? It just sudenly sounds like Stinkin' Thinkin'.
