Last year saw us losing some icons from Harry Belafonte to Tony Bennett to Tina Turner. Willie is 90, and he must be treasured while we still have him.
There is no one like Willie. Never will be. He is a beautiful songwriter and singer, with the heart of a jazzman. His embracing, circling round, and walking calmly to the soul of his or anyone's lyric are beyond technique. He is a d**ned fine singer. When he finally goes to where we all hope to go someday, it will be an infinitely richer place. God Bless you, my friend, and I will see you there.

Willie Nelson is a national treasure! I remember meeting him and his family in 1980 after parking on the way to his concert! He was staying at the hotel we parked at. Best night of my life!

A national treasure right there. I wrote a song about the day Willie finally passes with the line: "They say you never die til no one says your name...the day that Willie Nelson dies...he'll be here to stay..." It's hard to imagine a day when no one listens to Willie...
The honor it must be to play with Willie Nelson. I can hardly conceive of it.
This is one of those iconic songs that no one does better than those who have excelled in country-western, folk and blues music in which the singer proclaims the opposite of what is true to assert the point all the more strongly. Simple images, powerful message, perhaps also from Willie Nelson, the singer, to us the audience to make sure, just in case he doesn't get another chance to say it, and we haven't yet realized it, what he feels about us.
Thank you Stephen, for inviting him on, and thank you, Willie, for accepting.
Also true to his deep and wide Texas-ness, I love how the Mexican sounds of this arrangement drive the tempo while amping up the pathos.

I've been going to see Willie ever since the 70's when my parents drug me to Milwaukee to see him at Summer Fest. He is a legend and one of the most admired people on the planet. If the Rock and Roll HOF is going to induct Dolly and now Willie, it should change its name to the American Music HOF.

A Living Legend!
I worked for Young Country radio in Seattle in the late 1990's and got to introduce Willie and his band to the crowd at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, WA. THAT was a treat in itself! But the biggest treat was learning from one of the fairs security guys calling in the next morning that AFTER the show, a die-hard Willie Nelson fan got a major score. He'd waited and waited to meet Willie up until the fairs closing time, being told repeatedly that the meet and greet was over. But later, as the tour bus was getting ready to leave the grounds...Willie was told the guy was STILL hanging out. So he said, "Well bring him in!" What a high that guy must have felt! (In addition to the second hand haze already permeating the bus I'm sure...)

Willie wrote this song in 1964 and he's re-recorded it four more times on four other albums, I think this is the best version so far.
