- Rhythm n ning - Thelonius Monk 1961
Rhythm-n-ning - Thelonius Monk 1961. Performing in a studio in the Netherlands in 1961 we witness Thelonius Monk (1917-1982), one of the leading bebop musicians of the jazzworld. Monk's manner was idiosyncratic. Visually, he was renowned for his distinctively "hip" sartorial style in suits, hats and sunglasses. He was also noted for the fact that at times, while the other musicians in the band continued playing, he would stop, stand up from the keyboard and dance for a few moments before returning to the piano. Youll notice his weird approach where he was able to play with stretched-out fingers. Monk had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "'Round Midnight," "Blue Monk," "Straight, No Chaser" and Rhythm-n-ning. In this clip he plays with his regular musicians Charlie Rouse tenor sax, John Ore bass andFrankie Dunlop drums. - เพลง
Charlie Rouse is seldom praised for his work with Monk. He fitted in exactly and greatly enhanced the group as a whole.
You can Thelonious always listens to the music. He might get up and dance and as here just cock an ear and audit another's solo. You know, some other musicians seem to think it would look uncool or something to be listening to the other musicians. But not him. Man, he was just so cool. The coolest guy ever.
I saw this Thelonious Monk group play at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, May 1961. Recall other half of this concert was Art Blakey Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons.
Anyway back to Monk this very swinging quartet, Frankie Dunlop is wonderful !! I send all my best wishes to lovers of this music.
Alan Kirkby Magical time ! Lucky you !
@@CaptainKarma1972 Thanks for your kind words. Early / Middle 1950s/early 1960s, most of the great Jazz musicians were still alive at that time. People like myself who loved this music, it was exciting time ( never forgotten that time ) CapainKarma, I send you all my best wishes.
@Alan Kirkby best wishes to
You too Sir ! What a beautiful period in history to be born to witness this music up close .
@@CaptainKarma1972 Thank you Sir !!
lucky you. damn. I can only wish.
Charlie Rouse is truly one of the unsung giants of the tenor. He really swings as hard as anyone ever has.......wonderful
Frankie Dunlop was an amazing swing man 😮
Monk-no hat-all soul. National treasure .
Boy, what energy and drive, I quite agree that thrill is there ! Aside from Monk, who remains the boss and made all this possible, all four of them are killers here. Frankie Dunlop is superlative, and John Ore solid as a rock, what a pity they did not achieve more récognition for their huge talents. And Charlie Rouse ... Nuff said
Great Charlie Rouse solo, full of harmonic colors…
The groove is insane.
only one word describes this genius
On another TH-cam video someone had the temerity to label Charlie Rouse an average tenor sax player and that he probably only got the gig as he was a mate of Monk. If only I could achieve his level of "averageness" in anything I turned my hand at in life.
CHARLIE ROUSE IS BAD ASS! ONE OF THE BEST THAT EVER DID IT!
"..one of the leading bebop musicians of the jazzworld". I would say one of the leading musicians of the music world. Period. Maybe some might agree. Or not. Whatever. That's what I feel.
Frankie Dunlop is a baaadd man!
These guys are swinging like Will and Jada I love it!!!
Loool
My favorite Monk line-up
Frankie Dunlop smiling and swinging - in this way he resembles Billy Higgins to me
This is the spirit of life itself.

I must be getting old. Monk makes sense to me now.

This was a magnificent group. All giants of the music. Monk's mastery is on full display and Charlie Rouse captures all the nuances of the tune beautifully as always.
Thank God for them all.
Wonderful! The bass player is John Ore.
Rouse is a beautiful player. Every note is carefully placed. Is not what i strive to musically but he's a total master of his craft and a great musician.
This is the first time I've seen Monk without a hat.

Seems like one of the earliest Monk I have ever seen before he was beaten down by himself and the world ... by the way he was great at what he did and so were his fellow musicians and this is a stellar top-notch video recording which I have enjoyed a few times over the years
PURE JOY!!!!
