Rouse was such underrated player. A huge influence on my own development and on how to construct a solo from the first note to the last. He was a master .
Totally agree incredibly underrated and frankly some horn players I have known try to bash him 'cuz I think THEY wanted to be the tenor player in Monk's quartet. He has this understated "Woody-ness" in tone that is just so cool. Definitely agree a perfect complimentary fit for Monk and vice versa, sometimes the timing of the whole quartet is mind blowing especially Monk [Tenor player here.].
Royse's sax was tailor made for Monk's sound. It's got this refreshing hop to it that makes you want to jump on one leg for joy 😁😁. Nobody can reproduce it!!!
Rouse was the cat who got closest to Monk´s music for my ears. With all respect to the other giants who played with him. Rouse is to be checked out on any of his own records. Serious Business.
I like the way they vibe....Frankie Dunlop seems to like what he does, you can tell. He plays with a bounce almost like a dance. What can you say about Rouse.....a pure genius. He pays attention to Monk in awe. John Ore was holding it down all the way.
Frankie Dunlop might be the most underrated or unmentioned drummer ever. But he is one of my favorites. Great time and feel, comps amazingly well, plays off the soloists in a way that allows them to expand their concepts. Brilliant!
I've been on a T. Monk binge for a couple of months lately. Thus to come upon a Thelonius Monk video that I haven' t seen before is tremendous! Thank you uploader!
.... happens all of the time, you start out listening to an artist, and before you know it, that's pretty much all that you've been listening to for the past few days or weeks, happens all the time, and I absolutely love it when it happens !! 😉
Frankie Dunlap was a perfect drummer to compliment with his swinging pulse the music of Monk.A swinging driving drummer. He should have received more recognition for his creative talent. I saw him play with Lionel Hampton once. And he had the same drive as with Monk. And a vrry nice person.
What a great time period in jazz! Little did we know then, of the authenticity of the music and of these great players! TH-cam is warming my soul! Let's all encourage the pretenders that are all around us, to listen and learn!
God Almighty, this is the broadcast that converted me to modern jazz there and then. Incredible to see this again! Jazz has been a large part of my life since then. Thank you, man!
just a short response to the gentleman's supposition that the Musicans perhaps ingested a stimulant..To my ears I hear excellent music with no rushing.."A drummer who rushes is ahead of his time"!These masters are burning with Brilliance so shut the F up and just listen!!
Monk once told a critic, The piano ain't got no wrong notes! Awesome Monk, I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting him in the Village and at Randall's Island Jazz Fest! 1960 and thereabouts.
That`s when I first met with my dear friend Charlie Rouse and Frankie Dunlop. They were the perfect accompanists of Monk to bring him into the right mood.
Aahhh the quality of the audio actually serves these beautiful melodies rightfully. The fluctuation of the audio kind of makes it more interesting somehow
Monk one of the great grand-masters of Jazz and Bop along with Charlie Parker and Diz. Then came Dexter Gordon, Art Pepper, Wayne Marsh, and Ron Cuber.
Yo entro en un bar y estan tocando asi y creo que me muero....... vaya swing dios mio¡¡¡¡ Frankie Dunlop se sale con john Ore llevando el grupo en una alfombra voladora....
Fantastic timing. They all look like they each had a gram of speed before hand (drummer I think had a little too much. But perfect timing still) . This is a diamond find. What an amazing slice of time to have captured.
People sleep on monk's chord voicings, comping snd almost modal block chords. Its obvious he is moving the voicings around melodically. He loved to use parallel or similar dyads sich as 6ths. He also used the left hand 5th bombs thst Mccoy tyner would later become famous for. He would comp using the melody. And when you solo over that its easy to create counterpoint with the melody
The producers had all sorts of plans, buit on this gig, Monks band appeared in the studio and just started playing without asking or fooling with the announcers would wanted to provide the standard European lecture before the natives played!
Yo es que con el sentido del ritmo y armonico de este señor me quedo petrificado cada vez que escucho cualquier cosa.....nadie se ha dado cuenta que no lleva Sombrero????
Rouse was such underrated player. A huge influence on my own development and on how to construct a solo from the first note to the last. He was a master .
He learned from the best.
i really like rouse too seemed to fit best with monk.

@@painterly_porcine262 exactly
After Sonny and Coltrane, there is Rouse and Johnny Hodges
Great to see old footage like this preserved online. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You, Mr. Carter! You're very much welcome!
I will never tire in listening to Monk and Rouse. Thanks for uploading.
Rouse is killing it.
Charlie Rouse is a great tenor player, he made the sound with the Thelonious Monk quartet for almost 13 years!!
Indeed!
Royse's sax was tailor made for Monk's sound. It's got this refreshing hop to it that makes you want to jump on one leg for joy 😁😁.
Nobody can reproduce it!!!
FANTASTIC ..! This has the best members, with Frankie Dunlop, Charlie Rouse and John Ore .....!
Great. Monk gives all his soul on each note he plays.
Charlie was steaming that night!
Can it get cooler than this? Wow, Charlie is sooo great
Monk always sounds fresh and never dated.
This is about the peak for me.. Look at the sheer joy on the faces of this extraordinary group. LOVE.
the drummer is killin it
Frankie Dunlop is one of my favorites

i agree best fit with Monk.
I'm a Johnny Griffin guy myself, but I love Rouse too.
....couldn't agree with you more, Charlie Rouse, understood Monks "nuances ", more/better than anyone else !!
Loved it, video dropouts and all. Monk's music just puts a smile on my face.
One of the best concert in Amsterdam Concertgebouw 1961.
Monk is on fire here. Just look at Rouse's face.
The band was on fire! See the drummer light up completely. So glad public tv exists (still..)
Among the best videos ever, what force and excitement ! Incredible !

Thanks!

Totally with you on this. Nice to see their enjoyment.

Amongst all the superlatives that can be said about this clip, the sound is amazing-big and resonant!
I love monk's solos! :)
Jazz is definitely significant of extraordinary music. Raised on jazz from 1950s.
this is GREAT. Monk still in his prime IMO, And Frankie was my fav of his tourng drummers. Big thanks for this.
touring? He played also on the records of that time
@@1234swingit yes. If you would like to see an article I wrote on Monk's discography I would be happy to post the link.

Love the brief shadow portrait of Dunlop at 2:57.This film is an absolute treasure.I will thank you again!!
Thanks for sharing this gem. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Great story, makes me smile.
@@garnerjazz58 It felt like a stenotype language of which I found I had the key. Best to you!
This comment made me tear up. For me it was Monk playing on Jazz on a summers day. Can't imagine my life without Monk.
Fantastic! Yay for Dutch TV. A rare catch. Thanks for the upload!
Génial ! Un Monk en pleine forme Charlie Rouse inspiré et Frankie Dunlop jubilatoire. Une belle session !

Genius of the highest order.
What a fantastic video this is. At the height of Monk's creative strengths. This is a stellar performance. Thank you so much for uploading it.

Thank you so much for posing this great concert
Wonderful music. Thank you for sharing.

Monk once told a critic, The piano ain't got no wrong notes! Awesome Monk, I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting him in the Village and at Randall's Island Jazz Fest! 1960 and thereabouts.
Was there too!
Gotta love the way Rouse looks when Monk solos, especially around 10:10!
Rouse is looking at Monks piano when Monk is soloing. Did he always do that?
Monk's solo on "I Mean You" was SICK!
That`s when I first met with my dear friend Charlie Rouse and Frankie Dunlop. They were the perfect accompanists of Monk to bring him into the right mood.
Gerhard Bauer I agree! Beeing a drummer myself, I really think Frankie Dunlop is an underrated musician..
Brian Agha You should have Been a Bee, then you would Bee really buzzing :)
yup Frankie swings for sure
Great together .!
My FAVORITE T. Monk crew! Rouse, Dunlop, and Ore!
Vraiment la classe !!!!

It's gotten good to Charley!!

14:09 I Mean You - nice.
Very, flat out cookin' !!! 😉
He is entirely himself.
Awesome! I could go on and on but I'll limit my comments to this: "Where's your hat" ?
It’s tv and different times I guess.
How old was he here ? Just realized he looks a lot younger
Rouse was a universal send to Monk. Even better mix than Trane.
Couldn’t agree more! Rouse is a titan. No one better to complement Monk
💛🌱😀🥀
copy is not best ,but band is.thanks
Bemsha Swing sounds like freedom's sposta sound like.
Video skips Epistrophy. Love the rest of it.

Tony Thomas harsh. But so true
It's a pity the sound sucks. Que lastima !
Rouse cut his teeth with Tadd " the Squirrell " Dameron with Fats Navarro
4:13 the guy is almost as cool as the band :D
