- HIGHLAND PARK LAPIDARY -
Highland Park makes some high quality tools at reasonable prices. I have two of their tumblers. They're the most rugged tumblers I have seen. They also make a wide range of other lapidary tools, including saws, sphere machines, cabbers, etc. They also have the best price on grit that I have found.

Some observations.
All of the fossils you're finding are from the Hudson Bay region and were brought down by glacial ice.
Your blue chalcedony was likely encased in dolomite which is why it didn't bubble vigorously. However, that really reminds me of something you'd find in the desert southwest, not along the shores of Lake Superior.
Your red "mystery rock" at 11:30 could be several things, but very likely something silicified. Would have to look at it in person to hazard any reasonable guess.
Thanks, Paul. It's always nice to have an actual geologist checking our work!
I knew the fossils weren't from right there since there's no limestone bedrock like in Lake Huron near me. I had no idea they came all the way from Hudson Bay though. That's a fun fact!
Thanks for the guess on the dolomite. It looked like sandstone or limestone to me. I wasn't aware that dolomite doesn't react strongly to acid. The only dolomite I'm really familiar with is Kona dolomite from Marquette.
That mystery rock is the number one rock I'd like to have identified. I doubt there's a name for it since no one has every told me one, but there should be. It's very recognizable and very common in the eastern U.P. Everyone I go up there with picks a lot of them up, wondering if they're agates. They're clearly not agates, but they have some translucency to them that really grabs your attention. They also have several layers of what I assume are different minerals.
@@MichiganRocksWe'll take a look at em in a few weeks.
@@captpaul8827 I'm looking forward to that.
The agate at 20:15 is an agate 😊
Pretty banding on that red pebble.
I'm constantly wanting to say: "stop, a little to the left (or right), up a little, THAT one, what's THAT rock? " vicarious rock hounding, with you, is a blast. 😊 ThankYou ❤🎉❤
I have thought about doing a live video, but I don't think I'd make it ten feet down the beach! There's also no cell reception in this whole area.
I'm glad you love rocks and not just agates. I cross paths with so many people looking fire just agates. They miss so many other incredible rocks.
I'd have a pretty sad day if I only looked at agates. Agates are the big prize up there, but there's nothing wrong with a nice piece of unakite, epidote, banded iron, etc.
@@MichiganRocks exactly!
We see the other rocks, admire than move on. Trust me...we don't miss anything
@@MichiganRocks I could never look for just agates. Even up here, there's way more to see than just agates. 😊
Michigan the land God kissed with all goodness… happy rock hunting
I like that! A big smooch from God.
Wow! That is a colorful beach right now! Gorgeous rocks you are finding!
Looks better when it's wet. It was nice to be able to hunt up on the beach since is was so rough that day.
I like the epidote also. That was a nice one about 19+min in. You both found some nice little agates. Love that area up there for hunting
I never get tired of seeing a nice chunk of epidote or unakite.
You Two have truly have become friends, Rob, your doing a great job . Your show has improved a lot, I love your family bonding. Keep it up, and keep on tumbling. 👍🏼
Some of that weathered wood is beautiful too. Integrating rocks and wood can make for an attractive display.
I will take all the Rocks you both throw back. That Lake has millions of outstanding Rocks.
I left three of them by that big pine tree for you.
@@MichiganRocks I can’t trek that Terrain hehehe.
3:12 looove the half & half
4:45 😍
7:44 looks like a brick wall ❤
9:50 cool stripey guy
15:40 that’s a beauty
20:45 wow!
Gotta love the stripey ones!
Wow, all those agates look really cool! That monarch butterfly was really pretty. 😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Sam saved a few monarchs that were getting splashed by the waves.
Hi Rob, Thanks for this nice video !! to much stress here in France, we had a crazy week .... Watching ur video make me relax a lil
Glad I could calm you down a bit.
It's good to see you and Sam out looking for rocks again. Thanks for the video. Thanks for sharing your trip.
I am making my first trip to lake Superior in a week I've never been there in the summer, I am so excited to see what I can find, great video, really looking forward to see if I can find my first agate, ❤
Good luck!
Nice to see your home beaches again! Really enjoyed your vacation (and my virtual one!). I hope you can do an episode featuring a few of your finished vacation finds.
I'm working on tumbling my rocks from out west now.
Really beautiful agates and other stones! I do enjoy seeing you back in your home state finding gorgeous rocks!
Trips are always fun, but I always enjoy getting home too. I love where I live.
Nice to hear the sounds of the shoreline again.
Nice finds 👌
I like the fact that you appreciate pretty wet rocks ❤️
Thank you for showing us that there are so many beautiful rocks out there 😊
Is that a quote from another rock lover?
@MichiganRocks Yes! Rocks are so so beautiful ! Will keep watching your channel for some amazing finds 😃
Love all the “pre-tumbled” rocks.
Loving all these different locations and being able to see what you can find wherever you go… awesome video brother
Thanks!
Go to Lake Superior for agates. The other stones you guys found were worth the trip. The one with brickwork was awesome. The fossils and other rocks were much more interesting than those tiny "maggates."😁
You're right. Agates are our favorites up there, but there are so many other beautiful rocks that you're not going to go home disappointed.
The rock at 20:00 is absolutely an agate. Nice find!
Probably, but it was weird how the bands weren't as crisp as usual.
Wow, stunning stuff 🎉
I love seeing and learning about all the different types of rocks you find! Congrats! Super cool host agate find!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome Rob!!!!!!! Great work guys
Nice to see you back on your own turf again or should I say surf ! And nice to see Sam again. The lines and divisions on the rock at 7:41 almost remind me of a stone wall. Beautiful agates !!!
Surf _and_ turf! That brick-like rock was pretty cool. If the pattern had been smaller, I might have kept it. A big pattern like that disappears when you cut it into crosses or pendants or something.
Thanks for your videos. I was quite the rock hound in my youth, and your informative and fun escapades are luring me back to the hobby. Best from California!
I'm glad you're getting back into it. You have some interesting stuff in California. I'd love to go to find Lavic Jasper sometime.
Y'all found some really cool different rocks this time. I know how you feel about the mosquitos! They are some vicious insects.
Keep the videos coming!
I love this kind of videos, please more👍👍👍👍😊
There are a ton of videos like this on my channel.
@MichiganRocks thanks 😊👍👍👍
Those flies are no joke! Was up there a few weeks ago and got ate alive at vermilion point!
Do you have a bug suit? I carry mesh pants and shirt with me whenever I'm up there in the summer. I have the one I use listed in my Amazon storefront in the description. It's not perfect, but it keeps most of them from biting. Where the mesh touches your skin, they can still get you.
@@MichiganRocks No I don’t unfortunately. I had on shorts and tshirt with no bug spray lol. I later used about a half can of deep woods off but it didn’t seem to help much lol
@@KFairchild77 What we call "Off" the flies call "seasoning".
@@MichiganRocks I believe it!
Awesome, greetings from Finland 😇
Hey, that's awesome that I have Finnish viewers. There are a lot of people in the Upper Peninsula of Finnish descent.
@@MichiganRocks That is super to hear ✌️
Great hunting! The best hunting is when it's cold out. Sam said about his jacket "It's waterproof to a point." Yeah to the point it get's water on it! Great video guys!
I think "water resistant" is about as much as you could say about his jacket. He was pretty wet. I wasn't.
I was dry for maybe the first 45 minutes. Then slowly it soaked its way up my sleeves from every time I picked up a rock as well as just the general rain
Sam just had some amazing luck! He found quite a few really awesome agates! And you had a few too, but not as many as Sam found! There were quite a few not agates but were really cool and interesting looking rocks! The whole beach was covered in all different colors and types of beautiful rocks! I'm so used to our beaches and lakes here in Oregon, where 95% of the rocks are basalt so all you see is ugly dark grey to black rocks. Your beach is just an array of beautiful colors and patterns and not hardly a plain basalt rock out there! It's gorgeous! And I know the vast majority of them are granite, but they sure are a lovely granite! And they all are just so colorful! So it's no wonder that even your agates are that beautiful red! Great hunting, even though it was cold and wet, I'm sure the finds kind of made up for it, at least for Sam anyways! And that weird Rick Sam found and cut, was just strange! And it even has a weird reaction to the acid! I've never seen anything like that before! I have no idea! Thanks for sharing!
The variety of rocks we have is just amazing. I have been to beaches where most of the rocks are the same color and it's just not as much fun. Cold and wet is just one of the things you have to deal with in the U.P. It's not a place for wimps. The great rocks make up for it.
Sam is not just lucky. He consistently finds more than I do. I think he's just more focused than I am, plus he has younger eyes. He deserves credit for his skills.
Nice weather.
Yeah, just lovely.
Great job Sam good agate finds. Learning alot here thanks guys
I think heaven is looking for rocks in the UP of Michigan! I have so many rocks decorating my yard in SC, now this is a pudding stone, a Petosky stone, and here's an agate! Love your channel, almost as good as being there.
Thanks, Mary. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.
24:03 mins Monarch butterfly I believe and I watched a show once and they migrate across the Great Lakes on their way to Mexico. (I think I got all that right).
They migrate a long ways. Sam saved several that were soaked by waves by carrying them up to the woods or at least farther from the water.
Loosing blood to the mosquitoes… 😂😂. Sam is very good at finding agates. Nice!
I should get a blood donor pin or something.
There was a pretty peach or pink colored rock with stripes at the 3:15 mark i was hoping you would pick up,can u go back and find that one to show us lol. Love the vids
I think I see the one you're talking about. I'll hop in the Jeep and head up right now.
🙋♀️❤ so many colors on this beach!
Awsome episode!!!!!!
Blood donations, those mosquitos are evil. Great finds. Thanks for braving Michigan's crazy weather.
They're just thick in the woods up there. It's enough to just about drive you crazy. After getting in the Jeep, we spend the next ten minutes rolling the windows up and down and smacking them.
I've only been in eastern Michigan once in my life, in mid-1960's, a trip to see my mother's 2nd cousins. Didn't know anything about Lake Superior Agates at that time, I've learned quite a bit since those long ago days. By the time the early 1970's came around, I had read articles in The Lapidary Journal, Rock & Gem, and least another non-technical magazine that I could understand w/o degrees in chemistry and geology. On a trip to Wisconsin, I located a rock shop and bought a bag of LSA. Cut a few pieces which have red banding and eyes. Beautiful stones.
I'll bet you have found some interesting stones along those shores. Wherever I've traveled throughout the U.S. and eastern Canada I've always picked up stones: landscape stones alongside motels/hotels, gravel side-roads where I might have pulled over to take a break or eat a bite. Dug by fingers in the dirt, interesting looking stones. Can only guess what the mineral make-up is of these stones.
Glad I've found your YT channel and will happily follow as you find stones to 'share'.
Lakers are some of my favorite rocks.
“Not my favorite colors together.” 🤣
I need that great piece of driftwood for my yard!😍
I loved the grain in that stump. I wonder how many people understood my joke about the bad color combination in that rock? There are a lot of people from outside of Michigan who watch.
We’ll take the rainy cold too!
Nothing worse than those flies.
So interesting to go along with you on these adventures! Sam has beautiful hands!
I have never stopped to appreciate Sam's hands, I guess. They just look like hands to me.
Love the stash. One of these day I,m going to find one.
No one has reported in on this one yet.
Awesome video again Sir- and I just have to say, that green and white rock was a star lol GO GREEN GO WHITE. Cheers
I left that one on the beach for you. Go get it!
You both found some really nice agates and some cool other rocks.
Awesome finds. I was also drooling over all the black sands on that first beech.
I was on the second beach with Wild Kyle last week and we walked all the way to Muskallonge Lake State Park. We saw a guy with a Gold Cube set up there. He was finding some gold, but hadn't done his final clean out to see just how much.
@@MichiganRocks That is where I go😁
I'm no expert but I'd call that one at 19:58 an agate! Great finds!
It's close, but those bands just weren't as sharp as agates usually are. Nice rock either way.
If I admit that, I'll have to declassify all the ones I've found just like it. hehe.
@@MichiganRocks they dont have to be crisp, the "lines" can be made of tiny tiny individual dots as well, making the lines look more diffuse. Check if its translucent and test the hardness with a little knife. Really looks like lower grade agate to me.
16:40 is an interesting one. The lighter particulate is sometimes more scattered like stars in an agate, but I have some Mottle Agates that it groups tightly the same way. It gives it a cherty look at first glance, but lacks the slight abrasiveness you would expect to feel in the rub. Personally I think it's a great find. Even if it is not a LSA, it is really a beautiful and rare blue Chalcedony, but i believe it's a agate.
It's a weird mix of chalcedony and whatever that tan colored stuff is. Not a typical rock from that area.
Thanks for the video Rob!
I love that Lake Superior!
I love that part of the up. You guys did well😊
I love that area too. It's not as picturesque as the western U.P. but I love how remote it is. The rocks there are great too.
@@MichiganRocks It’s all good up there I am going up this weekend!
Yes! Been waiting for you to get back to the mitten
Did you enjoy the videos from my trip? One of the reasons I did that is because a lot of people suggested it when I asked for suggestions for my channel around Christmas time. I worry that I'm getting in a rut with videos that are all very similar. The videos from my trip did okay, but didn't get any more views that my Michigan videos do.
@@MichiganRocks I did watch and enjoyed them, Katy and Theo are great. There is just something better, to me, about the water and the waves and the fact that I am a Lake MI hound and hope to get to superior in the coming years. Pier cove is where I usually hunt and hit Antrim creek when I visit family.
@@Kyle.Wynsma Thanks for the feedback. I think maybe that's how other people felt too.
You are so lucky.. I live near southern end of lake huron.. only once have I been able to visit the UP.. Manistique. That was 20 years ago.. I've always wanted to go back.. some wonderful beaches and driftwood finds there.. maybe someday.. 👍👍
If you go back, consider going to the Keweenaw Peninsula. That's my favorite part of the U.P. My favorite rocks are probably in the eastern U.P. though.
Cool video, thanks for sharing with us
Like all the colors and strpes/patterns on stones. A nice but cold trip it looked like.
It was pretty cold and wet for the four days we were there. Before Sam started coming with me, I'd just watch the weather and go when it looked like it was going to be nice. Since Sam started coming, we have to go after school gets out and now that Sam has a job, he has to ask for time off in advance. That makes things a little more unpredictable and exciting!
@@MichiganRocks Ok, it is very nice of you to take this neighboors young rock-loving boy with you, but, it is also nice to have company even though he finds more Agats then you That I think is because of his eyes, the youth have better eyesight then we have after fifty sixty, unfortunately. Very nice that you took time to explain too. Better luck next time, must be exciting to go and wondering about what you will find. I had loved it and I am stone-crazy, but nothing special here, but, I find sometimes lovely rocks or old "crafted" rocks because I am digging in my garden. So I have found tools from the stoneage etc. sometimes special things. 🙏👍
@@kastah I have never found any artifacts. That would be a thrill.

It'g great watching ur videos. Looks like youve had a grand adventures this spring. Thank you for sharing and inspiring me to rock hound
I've had a great spring and summer. My trip was fun, but I still love Michigan.
We get alot of green jasper in OR like the unknown green rock. One of my favorites. Also it would have been cool to see the rock with the pink stripes cut. Manganese?
I'm not sure what makes those pinks stripes. I left that one on the beach, so there won't be any cutting pictures.

This was on June 13. We were there for four days and it never got much warmer the whole time.
@@MichiganRocks Envious
Great finds! Good times rockhounding with family. I understand frustrations with waves lol. I was just at lake MI in Charlevoix and it was windy.. hard to see anything
Waves are a mixed blessing. On one hand, they stir everything up and expose new material. On the other hand, you can't see much if the waves are there at the same time you are.
Nice finds, and its the perfect type of weather to go hunting in.
So many beautiful stones, I reckon if you dig down into the stobes, you would find tiny Agates.
A warmer drizzle would have been a little better than the weather we had. A dead calm, 65° day would have been welcome too.
@@MichiganRocks we have had awful weather.
So much rain, and all of our beaches are covered in wood.
When I saw the giant logs on your beach, that's what ours are like after the cyclone.
I made a video of it.
@@nicolagraynewzealandrockho8976 There are always huge logs on the beaches up there. It seems like they get more logs on the beach there than we do here on Lake Huron. Lake Superior is bigger, but Lake Huron is huge too.
I'm a Duluth MN native. I thought you would prowl around Thompsonite Beach, south of Grand Marais. I've never been and want to make the trip up there, myself. Thanks for the fun videos!
It's not really that far from Duluth, is it? I drove as far as Beaver Bay this spring. I didn't have time to go much further.
Really beautiful agates, so cool to just find them by eye like that. Wet rocks are much easier to see at least, worth braving the rain certainly. Making the best of some inclement weather for sure haha. Awesome episode.
Thanks!
Thanks
That's a good dad. Letting the boy win like that. I do that once in a while myself. ; )
Hopefully I'm a good dad, but Sam isn't my son. My son is older and has a full-time job so he doesn't have much time for rock hunting. Sam is my neighbor who I've known for his whole life. He's kind of like my replacement son.
@@MichiganRocks well, ya did good just the same!!
I have a son named Sam. We also love rockhounding. He's about your Sam's age.
Sam isn't my son, though. He's my neighbor. He's lived across the road almost his whole life, so I've known him like he was my son.
Many thanks for all your great videos!! While I don't do a lot of rock tumbling myself, I enjoy watching it and hearing the waves sound of Michigan beautiful beaches. That said, I am planning a trip with the family (young kids) to upper peninsula next summer. Any beautiful SANDY beaches that you advise to visit? Happy New Year
There are a lot of sandy beaches between Marquette and Munising. Also along US-2 on Lake Michigan there are small sand dunes a little way west of the bridge. People are pulled over there all the time to go to the beach.
Love the drift wood!!!
It wouldn't' fit in my bucket.
@@MichiganRocks 🤣🤣🤣 oh well!

I'm having split emotions about this. I live in an area that doesn't have any rocks, so that's not good. But I also live in an area that doesn't have a winter. I'm so confused right now.

It's a beautiful state.
thanks for entertaining me with all these colours love rock or fossil hunting or anything weird and rare from mountains and beaches and where ever my electric car takes me or bike motorcycle electric
I don't think you should probably go here. I doubt there are any charging stations close by. I have to always remember to fill up with gas while I have the chance so I don't get stuck down one of the long trails without enough.
Great weather for June!
Have you tried to make marbles out of the rocks? The small black and red stone, reminded me of one
No, but I might try that this winter. I have my eye on a sphere machine that makes tiny spheres.
You have me hooked on the striped ones. The ones that are mixed mediums make me so curious! I doubt I will ever see rocks like you guys walk over out here in Washington, but ... I always have to look at the rocks.
We do have some good rocks here. I'd love to get out to Washington or Oregon sometime though because you have some great rocks out there too.
We went up to Deception Pass one time, and that was a GRAND place - - my outlook comes from growing up on a very boring beach (in my opinion, but I know many who think it is grand) ... I have not done any serious rockhounding, but maybe this summer. Anyway, I grew up on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Oregon's beaches were very interesting to me when I was growing up, but I hardly ever saw it. Now, we are in Eastern Washington and have enough rocks on the ranch to keep us busy just moving them out of the way! Live is just a series of todays, with some "maybe tomorrow" moments, but we have been very blessed@@MichiganRocks
Seems like it was pretty chilly on the 15th of June when I was in Grand Marias. Some of the coldest camping I’ve don’t in June.
This was on June 13, but we were up there until the 16th. It was cold the whole time. The sun made an appearance on the 16th, but the wind picked up too, so the temperature felt about the same.
I am a wee bit of a rock hound. I couldn't tell you the names of half the rocks I find. Its like "Oh! Look at the pretty!" Lol! I am more of a fossil and artifact hunter. I met WILDKYLE the other day down here in southern Mi. I have watched all his videos and always thought, I would like to meet that young man. I was in one of our local stores and was checking out when to my disbelief, he walked in to the store. Very awesome young man! He got me started watching your videos. You find some very interesting rocks and fossils. Thanks for sharing.
Kyle is great. It's quite a coincidence to run into him in a store like that. We have run into people on beaches who recognized both of us, but that's a lot more likely.
@@MichiganRocks It was so awesome!
I think I was there at the same time! It never hit 50 that day... was so weird, but it was nice with no flies. Hardly anyone on the beaches I went to, but I didn't have as good luck as you guys did. Awesome finds!
This was on the 13th. We were in the area until the 16th.
Yep! Same time. I went from whitefish to Marquette. I may have found some.... but I'll have to cut them to be sure and I haven't rigged up my tile saw yet. I think I just need lots of practice on what to look for because I just never have much luck. I've only found one or two with clear agate bands and they were really small. Gonna keep trying though!
@@joolzbohr It takes awhile to develop an eye for them. Sam caught on right away. I'm still learning.

Yes, he sure is.
Sam knocked it out of the ballpark finding agates. Good hunt no doubt.
Yep, he's a great agate hunter.
I've collected a little bit of the red granite quartz rock you were talking about. Looks like a chunk of fatty salami. Salami Stone.
Delicious, but somewhat greasy.
You guys found very nice gems that day. I've been hunting lake superior agates for 40 years. I don't get to get to those secluded beaches you are able to get to. But I have found some awesome agates at vermilion. That is my stomping grounds. I would love to somehow show you some pics of my nicer ones. Is there anyway to do that? I really love watching your channel! You do a fabulous job!
Could you send them through Instagram? My Instagram address is in the description of all of my videos.
I cannot believe it is 50 degrees and it is the middle of June. It has already been 100 degrees here in South Texas. Did Sam miss you?
You never know what to expect in the U.P. We were there for four days and it was cold the whole time.
I'm not sure what you mean about Sam missing me. Do you mean when I was in Montana? I don't think he missed me. He came over to check his tumbler barrels while I was gone. Nancy was here, so I kept the tumblers running.
Just beautiful places to search calming in the waves here in England it’s been more rain than sun this summer!
We've had a really nice summer here. Pretty sunny and not too hot.
