Pasha Staravoitau Obama has a massive height advantage, not to mention age. Putin is ex-KGB, so that might help. Merkel... Merkel would probably not stand much chance, especially if Putin brought his doggy with him.
Pasha Staravoitau Lol. cultural background? Of Illinois, Indonesia, Hawaii... Kenya is his Dad's cultural background, but last I checked medieval Illinois didn't have cows, and if you count his mother's genetic and cultural ancestors, then they're probably from the same region as Merkel's, more or less.
Andabata started on horse and the way they were blinded was with an eyeless helmet. They were comedic and were expected to finish on the ground like Eques gladiators
Wow, your knowledge of classical latin is great. You use the classical pronunciation (which sounds closer to the modern German pronunciation of Kaiser). I don't know too many who would bother to get that right. glad to have found your channel.
Metatron please do!!! most people who r new to Roman tec. would b amazed that they were capable of doing this. it's always great to c how ingenious the ancient people really were
just watched 3 of your vids about gladiators... oh nostalgia remembering my latin lessons! also very informative (and in germany we obviously pronounce every single latin word wrong lol)
Imagine being the “not Postulare” just sitting there hearing the crowd chanting “ not you”! Then you got toe to toe with a champion! Great great back to the hospis for the next month…
there's a game for PSP called Gladiator Begins, its hack n slash game where u play as gladiator, start from slave to popular fighter u create the character ur self, ranking up, etc!
Thank You M You've had the best idea ever on what we can do with the Nob classes to settle their account with the citizens, Brixit has exposed a rich vain of British Politicians, The UK Pleberians would generously donate towards this wonderful spectacle hopefully staged in The Colosseum of Rome
He pronounces Caesar as K-a-e-sar and claims that's the correct classical pronounciation, while C being pronounced as a K sound is in accordance with classical latin, doesn't ae become an ai sound? Making Caesar be pronounced Kaisar?
Excellent as always. How many times were these minor gladiators referenced? Because even with the standard gladiators, you mentioned one that only had two mentions (the two swords type)
How much to you know about the Bestarsi? Were there specialized classes? Weapons? Methods? I've read that it was fairly common for a man with one hand tied behind his back to me matched against a large, mastiff-type dog.
as a student when i played Caesar the game i would pronounce it by the Greek way with K in place of C then I realized the real English pronunciation and now i actually learn that i was right from the start
Picking a noble to fight in the arena... that sounds like classic Caligula stuff there. Did he do that at some point? I think I'd be surprised if he didn't, hehe.
Could be what it is, but the wounds was "square" - four wounds. It was from the gladiator burial site in turkey and as i recall was found on several bones.
Dear Metatron, could you please make a video about the pronounciation and why we think that it was pronounced in a certain way? In Latin we had quite an argument about C and later I noticed that people pronounced it in at least 3 or 4 different fashions. I can hardly imagine the K-pronounciation although it makes Caeser sound like Kaiser.
I couldn't help wondering how amazing would be the sight of Matteo Renzi stunning to dizziness his heavily armed opponent with lots and lots of out of contest bullshit...
Moden combatants may face simular fighting when the pub shuts and the locals hate the regiment. Broken jaws the odd nose or finger is a release for PTSD.
Wow. My eyes just have been opened. The german word 'Kaiser' derives from 'Caesar'. The classical Latin pronounciation of 'Casear' is so very similar to 'Kaiser'. Additionally german Kaiser were instituated by the pope and emperor of the holy roman empire of german nationality. What an easy choice of a name for a person in that position. Of course! How could I have been so blind all this time?
LeoGalP they proved it was possible by finding the drainage system for the water in the underworks of the colluseum like a sewer system. they found it was possible to fill and drain the arena in a single day, so a sea battle in the morning and a land battle in the afternoon was possible. the water wasn't very deep (1-2 meters deep) as they used ships with low drafts. this is just like a modern indoor stadium that can have a hockey match in the morning and a basketball game later on.
all ya had to do was pull a rabbit out of a hat at the very end of the intro, then it woulda all fell in together perfectly, and totally made sense... great vid though!! i find your vids really interesting. great job
fyremunky Thank you very much :) In classical pronunciation is like that, but in ecclesiastical pronunciation it's pronounced as v so it depends on which pronunciation you decide to use ^^ (and occasionally I make a mistake and mix a bit xD )
Yeah, there were plenty Gladiators that were not slaves. Especially after the uprising of Spartacus, they forbade slaves be trained as Gladiators so after a point Gladiators were mostly not slaves period. Not sure if they "came back to season" after that though (as in, slaves for Gladiators again)..
I've watched all three of his videos, and he hasn't mentioned the one class I found most interesting :/ (I'm a boxer.) That would be the Cestus Gladiators. Pretty much the 'Boxers' of the time. I was looking forward to him explaining how they fought and the like, shame :/
Love your vids man. Just wanted to say that with 23 years in the martial arts, what your shirt says could not be further from the truth. Awesome shirt and I enjoy your lectures you seem very educated : )
why not do some gladiator reeanactment with a wooden gladius or other weapon shield or none and some armor....even if its for a light class and not that well made it would still be a nice battle
This intro is silly as shit. I love it.
Metatron, your intros make me cringe, but your content is always informational and interesting. Keep it up.
+gay lord I have experimented with many possible intros and now I have found the definitive one, check out my latest video to see what I mean ^_^
Yah mon. This intro made me think you were a roadie for Lacuna Coil who'd also gotten a degree in Classical history.
your gay
+Daniel Johns you're*
*you're
Our corrupt and incompetent politicians fighting each other in an arena: Hell Yeah!
edi let's go get the tickets bro :D
Pasha Staravoitau No, Merkel with Valkyre outfit, Putin with Bardiche and Obama, hm, now it gets complicated...
Pasha Staravoitau I put my money on Tsar Vladmir Putin the terrible.
Your voice is golden, I could listen to you narrating stories and poems of Ancient Rome for hours.
"Imagine your name is Mike" I was freaking out that's my name hahaha
yeah, imagine the adrenaline if you are the one who has to fight against Mike.
He is too loud.
Watching a real life gladiator tournament would be an incredible experience. But it would probably be very gory as well.
That opening... is your channel a cult? XD
+Acesahn kabbalah
Acesahn Yes. it's amazing. Join him.
Acesahn ONE OF US, ONE OF US!
Nah that fucking intro is freaky as fuck
metraton is an archangel
There is an archangel named Metratron
Andabata started on horse and the way they were blinded was with an eyeless helmet. They were comedic and were expected to finish on the ground like Eques gladiators
Wow, your knowledge of classical latin is great. You use the classical pronunciation (which sounds closer to the modern German pronunciation of Kaiser). I don't know too many who would bother to get that right.
glad to have found your channel.
Mike is actually my personal favorite gladiator of all time
God, I'm too much of a Skyrim nerd. I saw Tullius and Cicero in one name and freaked out.
The Armored Idiot ahahahahahh xD I see lol
😂😂😂
Very good job. I liked the way you inserted the sounds in this one.
RyuFireheart Thank you very much Ryu, I realised sounds also plays an important role in keeping somebody's attention and interest ^_^
Didn't know kiritsugu liked roman history
Also I totally understand the intro. Tho reading the comments I see not everybody has opened their eye. Love your channel meta
That intro really weirded me out... Like a religious cult
Chowder Stevens It is one.

Could you do a video about navel battles in the colosseum?
+useless1997 ah yes those were great I'll make sure to cover this topic too ^^
Metatron
please do!!! most people who r new to Roman tec. would b amazed that they were capable of doing this. it's always great to c how ingenious the ancient people really were
@@metatronytDon't forget this one.
Belly button battlessss
Well-researched and interesting, as always, Metatron.
Caterva is still used in portuguese with the original meaning... Fabulous channel. - Plaudite cives!
in italy too
The intro made me cry... so beautiful
Thanks for this great video!
I thought you said, "Remember, Metatron has pretty swings." Now I know...
That was the most ridiculous introduction sequence I've ever seen. Great video though :)
and welcome to the ring MIKE THE GLADIATOR!!
just watched 3 of your vids about gladiators... oh nostalgia remembering my latin lessons!
also very informative (and in germany we obviously pronounce every single latin word wrong lol)
Very nice information 😎👍 do you know what the Gladiators use to wear as undergarments and their different Armour.. .
don't know if you covered it, but cestus/caestus fighters? Wasn't that a thing in rome, or was it only greece?
Yeah over the series many classes were missed but he failed to mention the different variations of gladiator classes like retarious with a spear ect
Great series. Thank you
Imagine being the “not Postulare” just sitting there hearing the crowd chanting “ not you”! Then you got toe to toe with a champion! Great great back to the hospis for the next month…
You've come a long way. Great content
there's a game for PSP called Gladiator Begins,
its hack n slash game where u play as gladiator, start from slave to popular fighter
u create the character ur self, ranking up, etc!
Great video! Can't wait to see episode about wounds and overall gladiator mortality.
P.S. Sorry, but your intro is absolutely ridiculous.
Nick Fedorov I am glad you liked the video and for the intro...I am experimenting ^^
+Metatron the intro its cool, its funny :-)
Johnny :)
5:32 thats quite the greek key on the bottom of that carving there...
Great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
your videos are awesome as hell
Thank You M
You've had the best idea ever on what we can do with the Nob classes to settle their account with the citizens, Brixit has exposed a rich vain of British Politicians, The UK Pleberians would generously donate towards this wonderful spectacle hopefully staged in The Colosseum of Rome
+1 to you for using classical latin instead of medieval/modern latin! :)
He pronounces Caesar as K-a-e-sar and claims that's the correct classical pronounciation, while C being pronounced as a K sound is in accordance with classical latin, doesn't ae become an ai sound? Making Caesar be pronounced Kaisar?
Imagine being a gladiator in ancient Rome, but youre name is Mike
Fantastic - learned so much new stuff!
Love that intro and your angle.
a catervaria was an event between a team of gladiators of 2 rival ludus more than a class of gladiator
Excellent as always. How many times were these minor gladiators referenced? Because even with the standard gladiators, you mentioned one that only had two mentions (the two swords type)
You are a funny chap. And i do enjoy your vids
Entertaining and engaging with a great history lesson thrown in .thanks for sharing Metatron your a star ! 😊😉
he forgot to mention the cestus, which was a gladiator that fought with some sort of knuckles
The cestus is a weapon not a gladiator, it is as a piece of lesther with iron spikes or studs on it, it was the ancient UFC glove.
I love all this gladiator stuff.. it kind of sort of reminds me of American football
How much to you know about the Bestarsi? Were there specialized classes? Weapons? Methods? I've read that it was fairly common for a man with one hand tied behind his back to me matched against a large, mastiff-type dog.
No mention of the imperator gladiator Commodus? Though I guess he liked to fight as a secutor, so he would belong in the first video.
That wasn't even your best video, but I really did enjoy the information you gave... Great dual weld ending!!!
I like this introduction.
New sword?
Siegfried von Haus Yep ;)
They look pretty nice
is classical latin the one used by the romans or in the writings of the middle ages?
It's the one used by the Romans. Medieval Latin is a diffenet one.
How do we know how classical latin was pronounced?
we dont
jonas buying yes we do
how? no one has spoken the language in 1500 years. we only have the literary works as sources, only the written word.
That intro is a spectacle
as a student when i played Caesar the game i would pronounce it by the Greek way with K in place of C then I realized the real English pronunciation and now i actually learn that i was right from the start
+Simon opdebeeck I think that's what he's saying. He said he found that he was right from the start. Pronouncing it with a K instead of a C.
Nice! does the classes include medical insurance and 1st aid or are just online? (Bad joke aside, I love your channel!)
What about the guy who runs around until the other guy gets heart attack?
Doesnt postulare mean to demand?
9:00 "
...some of this legionnaires"( not gladiators)!😁
Picking a noble to fight in the arena... that sounds like classic Caligula stuff there. Did he do that at some point? I think I'd be surprised if he didn't, hehe.
Commodus did, and he fought too.
comodus fought against gladiators in disadvantage, he gave them basically toys to fight against him full armed
thank you
I had heard they sometimes filled the arena with water and had battles between ships.
Did gladiators strike to kill or just to draw blood for show?
More likely both
If possible the lanista would like the gladiator to stay alive for it was expensive to get a new one
Good intro dude. I like it.
Knechtor Thank you :D it was fun making it xD
I wonder about the four pronged wounds found in turkey, do you have anything about what weapon can have caused them?
TheKaptajno maybe a modified retiarius' trident?
Could be what it is, but the wounds was "square" - four wounds. It was from the gladiator burial site in turkey and as i recall was found on several bones.
please can you do hoplite types
Dear Metatron, could you please make a video about the pronounciation and why we think that it was pronounced in a certain way?
In Latin we had quite an argument about C and later I noticed that people pronounced it in at least 3 or 4 different fashions. I can hardly imagine the K-pronounciation although it makes Caeser sound like Kaiser.
edi yes I will make a video about Latin and also a full video in Latin eventually ^^
What about animals vs gladiators, there are movies where they show tigers or lions fighting in the arena, was that a thing??
Hello how about the more unusual Gladiator's, such as the Bestiary and exhibition fighters from the empire.
I couldn't help wondering how amazing would be the sight of Matteo Renzi stunning to dizziness his heavily armed opponent with lots and lots of out of contest bullshit...
The first gladiator class mentioned in this video sounded like something out of The Hunger Games.
i know what you said but what i heard was that owners of gladiators were called Lannisters
I thought the classic pronunciation for centurion was (ken to ree on) but in the video you say (cen to ree on) which one is correct
The Classical, ancient way to pronounce it is with a K sound, definitely.
Igor Mokin thanks

Metatron
Are there any books about gladiators you would recommend? Love your gladiator videos!
2:40 there’s a guy named Rodan.
So the first type is basically bhe 1v1 build fights in irl
8:29 In Spanish, "Aula" means classroom... that was an akward moment...
Wow.
My eyes just have been opened.

Keizer in Dutch also
How much did it cost to go to one of these shows?
+Harrison D You didn't go to watch if you were a plebian.
Tangy Slash
the the upperclass have to pay?
+Harrison D The ones in the consul, most likely...
but the ones closest to the praetor probably got free shows.
My understanding is that many gladiatorial matches did not end in death, that this was much more akin to modern sports than we generally think. True?
Metatron , did naval battle reenactments actually happened at the Colosseum? If they did, we would love to see a video about them :D
Wow, thanks, I'd heard it like a rumor but I wasn't sure.
what is with the baby at the knee of the statue of the emporer?
all ya had to do was pull a rabbit out of a hat at the very end of the intro, then it woulda all fell in together perfectly, and totally made sense... great vid though!! i find your vids really interesting. great job
Nice
bro it notified me of a new video but, this is two years old wtf youtube.
2:13 is that duck army lol
I’ve heard about Gaetulians, were those real Gladiators, or just something I saw on the Internet?
Wonder how much different your pay ways when you fought with your eyes covered.
what class would you say Spartacus was a part of?
The servile class. 😁
Metatron, do you listen to Yes,Rush,Journey or goofy bands like that??? Great video and content though!!! Good job.
Great video!
In latin, "V" is pronounced as "W".
fyremunky Thank you very much :)
In classical pronunciation is like that, but in ecclesiastical pronunciation it's pronounced as v so it depends on which pronunciation you decide to use ^^ (and occasionally I make a mistake and mix a bit xD )
9:56 ??
Davi Stanesco Editing mistake xD
Haha, it happens. Funny.
True to Caesar.
Rome, the original entertainment network.
were their gladiators who fought with hammers or axes?
Yeah, there were plenty Gladiators that were not slaves. That would be the Cestus Gladiators. Pretty much the 'Boxers' of the time.
I was looking forward to him explaining how they fought and the like, shame :/
I thought cestus was a weapon but the class that used it would be cool to mention
Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.
Catervari fought all against all.
So the romans invented Fornite...
wow so many effects in this one XD
scarecrow gamer ahaha yes xD I like experimenting new things ^_^
Love your vids man. Just wanted to say that with 23 years in the martial arts, what your shirt says could not be further from the truth. Awesome shirt and I enjoy your lectures you seem very educated : )
