    I completely agree with this - if you only have a brief photo and "hi!" then you're not meeting them, you're just seeing them. But to us, that's a pivotal moment and holy shit life is great.

    Thank you! Yes, it annoys me when youtubers say it can't be satisfying for us to queue just for a short convo, a hug, and a selfie, but that isn't for them to decide. If I want to spend my time getting hyped up and excited in a line and then getting a photo at the end and I'm given the opportunity, I'm going to take it

    I met you few times actually at sitc this year and also last year. Last year it was exactly how how you described it; you were running off to a panel and I stopped you for a quick selfie and I was sooo nervous but immensely happy to have gotten a picture with you! This year I went up to your merch booth multiple times to grab a poster, give you some swiss chocolate and have a good chat and it was absolutely amazing! And I’m so happy that you made this video because it made me relive those moments and brought a big smile to my face ☺️

    I love all type of meet and greets, whether I get to have a full chat with a creator or just a selfie, it always means something to me. I obviously love having a chat and spending time with them but sometimes the queuing can be just as fun and memorable like you said. I have made some of the most amazing friends in ques, and it’s always great to meet people with the same interests as you. but it is nice to have the time to tell a creator how much they’ve inspired you and helped you without feeling rushed and worried about being pushed along.

  • @SavidgeReads
    @SavidgeReads 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kylie and Nigella, you lucky so and so. I think meet and greets can be great. It’s all about the interaction from both the meeter and the greeter, who doesn’t love a quick friendly hello?

  • @pastelprince688
    @pastelprince688 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    i totally love "meet and greet culture" you could say bc ive met some of the best people and had some of the best conversations in queues like those. like when i met frank iero the first time he quickly signed the thing i had n said thank you and i had to leave, but i remember how he was fighting to say hi to everyone, and how happy everyone there was. i feel like you have to step back and see the moment as a whole and not just the 20 second interaction that you had

    • @palmtree1958

      oh my gosh you met Frank Iero! What year if you don't mind my asking?

      woah that's super lucky. I almost went to see him on what would have been a show or so before they had that bus accident in Sydney last year, but I couldn't make it, and they keep cancelling Soundwave so I've never been able to see him.
      Have a great time!!

    Aww dude, I think you nailed the whole meet and greet thing (I say thoroughly from the outside of it all). Very good points about it (including the quick 10s selfies) being another aspect of being in a community.

  • @maisied
    @maisied 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    loved this video dan! I’ve met you at the past 2 sitcs, both in very different scenarios.
    in sitc 2016 we met for less than 20 seconds, outside the open mic tent after your comedy show. it was quick and we only said hello and goodbye, like you said in the video i was so content and happy with that tiny interaction.
    however this year, i met you twice at your merch table (i was the one who gave you the photo of you and jack licking each other lmao) and it was so so nice, we talked and laughed for about 4 minuets which at the time felt like forever.
    what i’m trying to say is even at 10 second meeting or a 10 minuet one i was so so so happy with meeting someone who i look up to and has inspired so deeply.
    i couldn’t help but smile when you mentioned sammy because i knew exactly what you were talking about. when in the queue to meet him there was only 12 people in front of me but we ended up queuing for 40 minuets because he genuinely wanted to take time and talk to every single person he met.
    this video is making me super nostalgic and i can’t wait for the next convention i go to! hopefully i’ll see you there :)

    This was absolutely lovely! At VidCon Europe I got a Creators Pass, mostly becausr I'm more interested in TH-cam for a media studies perspective, but also because I didn't feel like spending my weekend queueing would be worth the €125. But you're absolutely right. It's not just that picture you take, but also the people you meet in that line. When I arrive at 8 am for a concert that isn't staring for another 12 hours, it's not just because I wanna be close to the stage. It's because I wanna hang out and get hyped.
    Yes, there may be a bigger decivision between the creator and viewer, but that's inevitable as the platform grows. When more people show up, you can't give them all your time and attention. That's not anyone's fault, that's just how it is. What really matters is that people are still sitting around, playing ukuleles and having a great time. So thanks for a hopeful video on the whole meet up deal. It's refreshing

    Yay! I'm so excited for VEDO, and this was such a good topic to start! I definitely think that the concept of M&Gs being about community and the experience as a whole is something a lot of people miss out, quite often actually. Whilst obviously the main focus will be on that 30 seconds with someone you admire, there's so much more to the event as a whole which just buzzes and stays with you. Woop.

  • @AdamFaulknerVideos
    @AdamFaulknerVideos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    To be honest, I started to find the idea of Meet and Greets weird from my own viewer perspective this year. I was lining up for Hazel's M&G at SitC this year, and I was talking to a friend, and I realized that I was super out of place because of how I interact with TH-cam. That's why I enjoyed talking to people (you included) at Merch stalls, especially on Creator Day. I actually got to have a conversation with all of you guys as people. Of course, some people love it, and that's awesome for them, but I only realized this year that the way scheduled, proper meet and greets work really doesn't do anything for me... Also, awesome as it was to meet Hazel at the end of all of that, I definitely wouldn't wait over two hours for it again...

  • @temereani
    @temereani 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    i agree with this. like i saw dodie, bry and candice live a few years ago at a show in nz and it still remains one of my favourite shows ive ever gone too because it was the only show i went to where i actually made friends in the queue and we talked about youtube and music and when i got to meet all three of them separately for those 20 or so seconds i never once thought about how short it was or that i didnt get to have a full conversation because i have anxiety when it comes to talking to people i dont know and so those short moments where i just got to say hi i get a picture and hug were so lovely and i can still remember what they said to me.

    earlier this year i went to see All Time Low in Manchester and by coincidence ended up meeting the drummer from a band I admired when I was 14. I remember thanking him and asking for a selfie and being so nervous but then afterwards when I was about to walk away he pulled me into a big hug and told me that he appreciated my support. The interaction must have been around 30 seconds to a minute long at most but it was one of the best feelings in the world and I think whatever time you get to spend with someone you admire is definitely something to treasure and partake in because I wouldn't take my memory back for the world😊

  • @TheMonopSavi

    I really like what you said about meet and greets. It is sometimes tough to understand why people wait so long for such a short amount of time to meet someone but its the thrill of that moment and that experience. It is the same thing when you wait three hours in line for a ride at a theme park that only lasts a minute. By the way, I was one of the volunteers at Buffer Festival and I stayed friday night to watch you Dom, Sam and a few others play Jenga while you waited for Dodie. Thanks for letting me just kind of hangout at watch. I felt like it was weird I was there but it was such a great experience just sitting and being there with you guys. It reminded me how youtubers or celebrities are still people

  • @hollyeldridge3156
    @hollyeldridge3156 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love meet and greets even if the idea seems a bit pointless. There's always something that makes your interaction unique and if you want you can always write a little letter to give to the person your meeting that says everything you want to say but don't have time/are too awkward to actually say. Also it reminds me that they are a real human not just a picture on TH-cam. (also, Woooo Dan's doing VEDO!!!)

    I met Sammy at comic con in Glasgow before I queued to meet Tomska and I had a proper conversation with him for a while and it was brilliant he was so lovely. But it was also as amazing meeting Tom for literally about a minute. Having experience both of those I still came away from them so happy to have met and of course I wouldve liked even more time with both of them its still a really good memory to look back on.

    Hey you won’t remember but I left a comment a few videos ago trying to find some girls that I met in a queue for a meet and greet. We queued for three hours and ok, we kept asking “why is this taking so long?” and worried that the line would get cut off before we could meet this person, BUT I got to spend three hours with three people whom I never would have met otherwise. That’s what I remember from that weekend even though I haven’t spoken to them since, I loved every second of it

    Firstly, YAY (HOPEFULLY) DAILY VIDEOS!
    Secondly, I agree with absolutely everything you said about meet and greets in this video.
    This summer I met Natalie Dormer at a convention. A woman who I have unashamedly adored and admired for well over ten years. It was a couple of minutes of an interaction but I will carry those minutes with me FOREVER. I gushed at her like an imbecile about how much meeting her meant to me and she shook my hand and said it meant a lot to her too. She probably said that to about 100 people that day. I don't care! I walked away from that queue with happy tears streaming down my face because I'd met an idol of mine and it was a damn good meet.
    I know it can be frustrating for creators/people doing the m&gs because of the limited time frame but even thirty seconds means so much to the fans and adds to their overall experience. That makes it priceless!

    I remember telling my ex how much fun I had at sitc2016 and how lovely it was to meet you, and he was saying how you would never remember me and I'd just be a passing face in the crowd so what was the point in crying about it? Jokes on him because you did actually remember me in sitc2017 so he can actually do one lol
    Anyway I can't wait to meet you again, hopefully I won't be as flustered and shook lol

    I love dan's table ethics, at MCM I had the greatest time because he gave me time! Because I was NERVOUS I went back probably 5 times over 3 days and both he and Sammy were SO LOVELY and also I was everyone to know that I'm all dancey no laughy champion because I beat them both. It did help that I had facepaint on... BUT STILL thank you Daniel J for being such a wonderful wonderful human being 💕💕

    I met you at SITC last year with Hazel Hannah and Sammy and I loved it! It was rushed but it didn’t feel it. You all made that minute feel so so special. A short time helps me, I am autistic so chatting is very hard for me. We joked around and talked about the day, I wrote letters for you all which helped me a lot. Letters I feel are easier for me and many more people I know. Letters enable you to include everything you want to say without the worry of running out of time or getting too nervous or overwhelmed to say it all! Loved meeting you Dan, thank you!

    I was the last person to meet you during one of your stints at your merch stand on the Sunday and whilst I waited I made friends then you made me laugh, side hugged me, remembered me near Chloe the day before, wished my sister well and gave me newfound hope.

    Being a creator and a fan is probably the weirdest feeling. Like you relate to both the fans who are waiting at the lines for hours and also the creators who don’t really know what to call themselves or how to act.

  • @potatobugbite

    I really loved this! Personally as a would be meet and greeter I generally hate meet and greets. I like the idea of meeting these people that I look up to, but I hate the thirty second selfie and joke situation, because I hate the idea of glorifying people like that and waiting hours to meet them. I love the way you talked about this because absolutely if that brings people joy, they should go to meet and greets! And I should maybe stray away from them haha!
    I do like the meet and greets, although I don’t think they really happen anymore, where a few youtubers and fans would just go to a park and sit around and talk. No lines or time limits. Just a nice social gathering! I completely understand that that’s dangerous especially for people with a LOT of subs, but to me that feels like a nice connection, even if I don’t get the chance to have a one on one conversation with them!

    I really liked this video! I personally love meeting people I admire, however briefly- I remember meeting you at London MCM and it was so great to chat about books and work, even for just a little bit of time. But you're right, the memories I have of that time also encompass the whole day, and it makes me think of how much fun I had with my friends! Thanks for always being so sweet to your fans and for meeting us- it's super nice to chat to someone who is genuinely kind and interested back :)

  • @booksandharps
    @booksandharps 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm really glad you talked about how it's ok regardless of how you feel about m&gs? I'm 20 (which felt kind of ancient that weekend haha), have major social anxiety and this year was my first SiTC and I had an amazing time. I went with a friend of mine (we both came up to your merch table and you admired my bullet journal and told me to make a list of Janet Jackson songs in it) and we wandered around the merch stands, went to panels, went to m&gs and danced like mad at dodie's show and every bit of that was really fun. I love m&gs, because my anxiety makes it hard for me to hold a conversation with any stranger, let alone one who I respect so much, but I got to meet people I admired, have a quick chat, tell them what their work meant to me, get a hug and move on with my day. In fact, I felt so happy about meeting everyone that it didn't make me anxious, which is a first? Anyway, it was a really positive experience for me. Good luck with VEDO!

    I am so happy with this video, not just because of the fact that this is a VEDO video, and that means you will vlog a lot in October and we'll get to see you a lot more, and not just for the fact that you encouraged me to use VEDO as an excuse to make videos again, after not making ANY videos for about 1.5 years....
    It's because you made me think a lot about what you're saying, I usually agree with youtubers who say that they don't feel comfortable to do a quick meet and greet, but you are actually right, it's not just for them, it's for us, and we as viewers or small creators LOVE meeting you and taking a selfie with you guys...
    When I left a comment few months back, saying that I've met you before and how amazing it was, it was real... but you leaving a comment saying that you actually remember me was even more amazing and surreal... but even if you didn't remember me, these 30 seconds will always be a great highlight in my SitC 2015.
    We get excited for meeting you, and we can be as happy with a lovely 30 seconds as a 5 minutes conversation. Because we usually think that you won't really remember us anyways. But WE will do, and that's what is important... Yes we all would love to chat for 5 minutes or even more, but it's because we want to show you how much we appreciate you and what you do. I personally don't want to seem like a rude girl who just want to take a photo with you and leave because I have better things to do in a convention, or look like I am one of those who just want to say hi to this famous person just because he is, not because I know them and really love there work.
    I don't know. it's a bit of a complicated formula really.

    as one of the group that met because of you last year, i'm so happy it made you happy that we were still together this year!
    also i totally agree with you on all this, not only did i meet aly, malene and gemma in your queue last year, but this year i also met some lovely new friends in hazel's queue! to me, those queues were the absolute highlights of sitc because you're right, it's about being part of a likeminded group of people!
    also just to gush at you a little, thank you ever so much for being so lovely to meet. seeing you at your merch stand was great, it felt like we were there for a very long time and got to have a proper chat. my friend and i also bumped into you as you were leaving the hotel one night and you made us feel very at ease, even though you were so tired you stopped and chatted animatedly with us and it meant a lot. thanks!

    When I met you at sitc, I was really grateful that you had an actual conversation with me and my friends, especially as I was a complete nervous wreck who had to get introduced to you by the person at the Alex and Jake stand lol. Maybe it's because when I watch TH-camrs I spend most of my time wishing I was friends with them so having an actual conversation with you about our weekend and baking was amazing and something I'll treasure forever. On the other hand I queued for ages to meet Luke Cutforth and maybe it was just a hug and a photo but it was worth it and absolutely amazing! So yeah, definitely no right answer to this one

    whenever i try to explain meet and greets to anyone who's not a youtube fan or the like, they look at me a bit weirdly and ask me how it actually makes me happy or at all satisfied, and this explained it so well ?? it's like,, the actual interaction might be a few seconds but to the meet-er (new word there y'all) it's a few seconds of holy shit this person is real and holy shit they're talking to make and wow they're actually a human who now knows somewhere deep in their subconsious that i exist ?? and that's pretty cool tbh

    Love your thoughts on this! Over the last few years, my daughter has been to meet and greets and has also gained the confidence to approach people outside of that situation. Both have been great for her. In meet and greet queues she has made some really good friends and, at the end of it met people she would never have met any other way. But she also has some great photos from spotting people around SITC and just saying hi. She's met you twice now - first at Dodie's gig in London (where you made a video message for me) and then at your SITC merch table this year, and both have been great experiences :-) Best of luck with VEDO - this is a great start :-)

    I love this. Your opinions on topic are so different. You show that there is another side of things and something is not black and white but it's in a grey scale. Your talks are so intellectual and you make me laugh with your excellent humour. Even your humour is intellectual kind of humour. You got both beauty and brains. So glad you are doing VEDO and really hope you finish it this time although I still doubt it. Prove me wrong this time. :)

    I can remember significantly the difference between a rushed meet and greet and a more lovely one. When I met Connor franta at a book signing it wasn’t even a photo, it was “hi!”, exchanging the book and leaving again. Whereas when I met Emma Blackery, I was genuinely taken aback by the prompt at conversation as I wasn’t used to it. Honestly smaller creators are lovely is the takeaway for me!

    I like your thoughts, and it's a good perspective that I haven't really considered all that much before. But I agree! For me it all comes with a odd sense of, should I put someone on a pedestal, it means I am lower/lesser. But that is only my own insecurities showing, and in fact I think it takes a great deal of generosity to queue up to tell someone you adore them.

    I got to meet you at London MCM earlier this year and I look truly awful in the photo we took but I still like it because it just reminds me of the nice chat we had about Walk the Lines and all the great advice you gave us as we'd just moved to London. It was lovely. Yay!

    i've actually had experiences where ive met creators and exactly how you said, made friends or met up with old friends in the process. like yeah its wonderful i got to meet that creator i was really happy but the thing i remember most is meeting one of my best friends for the first time, and going with my (at the time) girlfriend. i got to do so many things and have so many smaller interactions that made the whole day worth it

    this is very timely for me bc i just ran into you and sammy at buffer fest the day before yesterday and it was the most AMAZING EXPERIENCE. i'm glad i got that picture bc every time i look at it i'm reminded of how awesome that night was and how insanely exciting it was to meet you guys. it was such a good and worthwhile even if it was only a couple seconds and i was nervous as heck. great vid!

    I think it's really nice that you put how weird it feels for you in perspective by remembering how you felt meeting Nigella and Baptiste. This reminded me of when Dodie said M&Gs were really weird, and then cried the day after when she got Demi on the phone and was like "Oh yeah ok" haha. It's the same for us viewers, although the art you put out is in a different format. I think maybe the frustration is that as TH-camrs, how we know you is through you talking a lot and being yourself, so it makes us even more want to be able to be ourselves and have a normal conversation (which usually takes more than 30 seconds). Whereas for instance if you meet a famous artist you can be very thankful for how they've helped you or in awe of their talent without feeling like you've got this intimate knowledge of their personal life. But then again if you meet an artist that you stan, it's the same as meeting a TH-camr haha just because you wait for an hour doesn't mean you consider them as superior or not normal, but you're still happy to talk to them

      @emeline_4 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And you're definitely right about merch tables being awesome. I went to SitC this year, it was my first TH-camr event ever, and although my M&Gs went well, I really liked being able to drop by merch stands when I wanted. I don't think I could have ever met Tom otherwise, and I wouldn't have been able to talk to you like I wanted! I came to your stand on Saturday and made you sign a book, but kinda freaked out and didn't say what I wanted to say. So I came back on Sunday to tell you how much I enjoyed your content/channel (and how great Baking with Layton live was), and it really was chill and awesome. And very satisfying to have the chance to tell you what I wanted without freaking out. I also felt less awkward queing on my own (I went to SitC by myself) for merch stands than for M&Gs

    #VEDO IDEAS?: I'd like to hear your thoughts on interacting with other CREATORS at conventions? Is it like a mingling for business contacts kind of thing? Do people walk up to you semi-drunk, chat for a bit and then ask to collaborate?

  • @storiesbybrittney
    @storiesbybrittney 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    i've heard a lot of YTers talk about this but I really like how you used yourself as an example when you meet your idols. It is weird (for me) walking up to a vlogger (or even a "superstar") and being like "Hey, I know you do this as a living and this is your job but I'm a fan of how you work!" but it's so much more than that. I (we) really do appreciate you guys and I'd def love a 15 second conversation with you lol

    I don't do this with TH-cam but I'm an avid concert goer. Some artists I love I've grabbed a quick picture with or said hey, shook their hand and thanked them for a great show, those tickets and pictures always make me giddy because I just remember the happiness of the night. However, I've often had five minute chats with artists and there's a few who I've see so many times they come up and say hey themselves and ask how I've been. These interactions are different and fun and personally I like being able to have a chat more but it's often up to the audience. I wouldn't go to a meet and greet, I'd go and have a chat at the merch stand, less pressure, my autism + pressure don't do well together and then I get flustered and embarrassed but in a relaxed setting I feel capable. Idek, I also feel like there's no right answer but often those moments aren't about the person being met, it's about the person meeting them who's queued there and who's to say what counts as important to each person?

    Honestly I think the experience of waiting in the queue is maybe just as good as meeting the creator. Like where else are you going to find a bunch of awesome nerdfighters (or whoever lol) to hang out with - the internet I guess, but when it's real and in person it's so awesome because you're among your people. Idk if that makes sense, I'm just still pumped from vidcon aus :P

    Yes loved this video! I'm about to meet one of my biggest inspirations next week and I'm so torn about it. On the one hand it's amazing, on the other hand I'm so nervous about it and I bet I won't be able to enjoy it as much as I would like to as it will consist of 20 seconds of unstatisfactory stuttering instead of a short but meaningful chat... and I'll be going alone.. but this gave a new perspective to think about.
    Good luck with VEDO!

    i really liked this video and i love how you could actually understand. i think people that don't want to meet the people they admire (like sav, for example), don't quite understand how much a 10 second interaction can mean. while yes, i think most people would probably rather an actual conversation where you could speak to the Meeter & Greeter like a friend, 99.999% of Meetee & Greetees understand that's just not realistic nor is it possible. i also totally get sav's point of view though, so it really depends on your personal preference! looking forward to vedo, i believe in you, pal!

    This was really interesting! I mostly find myself agreeing with you - meeting people we love is very rewarding regardless and I spent such an amazing time at SitC with friends, not just TH-camrs! And yes you did give me university advice and yes I did take it. It's working out well - I'm in three societies, loving my course and already got to discuss Dracula with someone! I haven't done a meet and greet before, but I have gone to a youtuber's show and I think to me its just about realizing that these are real people who exist and kind of getting rid of the divide even if just for a second. And waiting in line with people who are just like you and share interests and just being surrounded by like-minded individuals.

    IM SO PUMED FOR VEDO ur vids always put me in a better mood and low-key make my day. Also, I really enjoyed your thoughts on the queue and I'd never considered it that way before. I went to Vidcon back in 2014 with 2 other friends so I didn't really make any long term new ones but now I wish that I had gotten some contact info from the people we chatted with in line!
