    Magnum losing the best of 7, followed by his accident, was a real, now what moment. But it made Nikita all the more credible when he came to rescue Dusty Rhodes against the Four Horsemen. Incredible pop.

    This was totally bad-ass. Nikita played his role to perfection. Huge monster heel annihilating jobbers on TV with the Russian sickle, joined by Ivan Koloff. Both would insult American fans and way of life as the 'Cold War' was still raging. The intensity of the 'Best of 7 series' will never again be duplicated!

    Is it true that Magnum didn't smarten his mom up, so during the contract signing between the 2 she thought it was a shoot? All-time great segment BTW.

      We went to the Bash at Charlotte when Nikita won the series. As a 12 year old kid I was heartbroken. In my mind on the way home, Nikita would never lose the title.

    Nikita is the best example of Corny making everything personal: A consistent Corny would love Nikita. Somebody that dedicated to the performance, who worked that hard, who was that quick a study, should NOT be a punchline, mocked by Corny. Nikita's only sin was not being nice to Corny

    I had the privilege of attending the first match in this series in Philadelphia at the Great American Bash on July 1, 1986 (34 years ago today), at Veterans Stadium, which was a horrible venue in which to hold a wrestling event, but it still had an atmosphere of a special event given the novelty of it at the time. The match between Magnum TA and Nikita Koloff was good, but had nowhere near the heat that their final match in the series had. This is where a smaller, filled, indoor arena is far superior to an outdoor stadium, especially for capturing the crowd reactions, noise and energy.
    Another notable fact from the G.A.B. event in Philly on that night is that it came dangerously close to being shut down by the PA State Athletic Commission after the Jimmy Garvin / Wahoo McDaniel strap match when Wahoo McDaniel got a piece of his blade stuck in his head and was in the bathroom mirror in the dressing room trying to get it out. There was an unscheduled intermission after that match (4th match) and the commission was going to cancel the rest of the show at that moment, which - of course - was not known to the fans in attendance. Luckily, cooler heads prevailed and the show continued with no blood, despite the fact that there was still a taped fist match and a steel cage match to come. I didn't find out until a few weeks later why there was no blood for the rest of the show that night, but it really killed the heat.

    • @philaman1972
      @philaman1972 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was not at the show, but heard about this. Wahoo was a legendary blader, as evidenced by his forehead.

      Me too! I learned years later that he lost that series because he was getting ready to Start a program with Ric Flair that ultimately would've have made him the World Champ! I was even more heartbroken when I found that out because I realized if he wasn't in that car accident he would've been champion! He probably would've been at least a five time champ throughout his career!

    I've seen a few comments about Magnum not facing Flair at Starrcade '86. I remember Jimmy Garvin feuding with Magnum and Ron Garvin feuding with Nikita. Were both these feuds headed for Starrcade? If so, who was Flair supposed to face? Flair lost and regained the belt at the GAB with Dusty but I'm sure they wouldn't headline Starrcade again...could they?

    • @Maestrohbill

      David - here’s how they set it up. As the Magnum-Nikita feud began, they had Nikita come out and announce he would not wrestle on TV until he was given a Russian chain match with Magnum on TV. On 1-2 occasions they handed down a pretend edict that he had to wrestle this nothing match because the NWA said so. This kept Nikita off TV to avoid exposing his flaws but let him in on occasion to throw his Russian sickle. Then he demanded a press conference, where the Russians insulted Magnum’s mother. Magnum jumped them and then got sickled in the room. Then they called in fake NWA commissioner Bob Geigel to reprimand TA. He belted Geigel and got stripped of the US title. The match had been set for June 7, 1986 on TBS. They came on and laid out the story so millions of fans who thought they were gonna see a Russian chain match between two stars got screwed. That’s when Crockett announced the best of 7. I hated Crockett from that moment on. Over and over he would promise great matches on TV and every single time it was a lie. They’d go to the match right as the show was going off. The best of 7 series was a great idea but at least he could have had a match between the two rather than lie to all of us. Have TA stripped for belting Geigel at ringside during the match on TV.

      @Maestrohbill 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Maestrohbill I know about the confrontation between Koloffs, Magnum and his mother. Im 49 started in early 1986. And that his mother's reaction was real he didnt inform her what would happen. They should have had all 6 matches in the Bash tour. I think Magnum's 1 or 2 wins were Bash tour shows but the 3rd win was tv taped and the last August 17 after Philadelphia. I was at 8/16 show which was a double count out.

    Wrestlers not acknowledging people in the streets nowadays are perceived as being dickish thanks to how the business has evolved. Guys like Koloff and Vachon way then would be the biggest a-holes outside the ring because wrestling made them look that way and people expected that from them. That was the beauty of it all and it will never be restored.

    I wish he would really clear up the plan for TA at Starrcade. at the time of the crash TA was in a feud w Jimmy garvin. the were escalating it one month before Starrcade. I think TA would face flair in 87 and win the title.i believe Barry Windham would face flair at Starrcade 86 had magnum not had a crash. he was in the wcw and about to face flair regularly in early 87. nikita was a better heel and his match w flair at Starrcade was not good.
