    You my friend are a champion. I’m a South East Asian living in a warm temperate (Mediterranean climate) area of Australia. You have both embarrassed and educated me tremendously. Embarrassed as I had no idea about some of things you said about turmeric that I should know, and that you are successful in growing it while I suck at growing turmeric and ginger. Educated, in that now I know how to actually grow it successfully because of this video.
    In our cuisine we use the ground rhizomes as a spice in curries and other general spicy dishes. We also use the leaves for certain dry curries and in some of our salads. We don’t use the flowers though.
    He medical benefit is that the curcumin in turmeric is now a know powerful anti-inflammatory.
    Thank you for this video.

      The benefits are better if you add black pepper when consuming.

      Agree. I’ve watched a few and some of the information in here was the best that I’ve heard. I really appreciated the part where he mentioned letting it harden over open skin before planting. I have some and I was about to plant today but wanted to make sure I didn’t screw it up and I’m so glad I waited. Two more days of waiting will be worth it if my plants have a higher chance of success!

    I live on Lake Superior in Ashland, WI and don't have a long growing season so will definitely try growing Turmeric and Ginger in pots so I can bring them inside the house in Winter. The 'arctic tundra' does not allow for much to grow outside here since it really is a very short growing season. Thank you so much for your clear instruction.

    • @Jerseyhighlander
      @Jerseyhighlander ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't survive the winter even kept warm, they live roughly 10 months at most in ideal condition then die back and hibernate fro two months. They have to have that rest period to thrive.
      We start seeing our first frosts as early as October here and my plants keep chugging along outside, well below 50 degrees at night. Usually terminate them around Thanksgiving.

    Fresh turmeric and ginger can be added with other fruit in cold pressing which is great. Also nice in smoothies. The leaves can be added in Asian curries or stir fries for flavour.

    Gosh, my turmeric plants look sooooo different from yours. The foliage on mine is a very light green, almost chartreuse, and it stays compact down to the soil level. The blossom looks sort of like a hyacinth bloom, white, and it is held very close at the interior of the plant. I've been growing it for about 10 years. The fist sprout didn't occur until a whole year after I'd planted it from the supermarket. Here in my very mild coastal climate, the shoots don't appear until mid June when the weather really starts to warm up. It's hardy overwintering, dormant, but it never freezes here. I'll send you a photo once they're well up and growing. If it isn't a different species from yours, it is at least a different cultivar.

    I'd definitely like to see your harvest video. I think would be good to set pots to Be planted outside of tray to keep straight with what you've planted, for any of us newbies. Confusing otherwise.
    So I would say, water once a week, as I do all my house plants, as they dry out between. In my house ofcourse, in IL. Thanks for sharing. Interesting! 😊

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you will keep that in mind. I always put extra pots because I usually don’t know how I will arrange things until I get started and just put back any of the excess.
      I usually don’t say a specific watering schedule for any plant as many factors can contribute to needing more or less water. Plants as with people or animals don’t always take up the same amount of water and tends to change depending on demand. The way I tell when to water is based on weight. When the pot feels light I water. That way I can also tell if there’s still water in the bottom of the pot because it will feel heavy on bottom. In the end though I tell people to do whatever works for their plants and to just take note and adjust if needed. Ultimately one can’t argue with success 😁 thanks again for watching and for the suggestions!

    Comment recorded on June 18th 2022 from Newark Ohio this is an excellent channel because you show the new Gardener like me who lives in a town home and is looking at the turmeric I bought from Kroger's and I'm going to try to plant it as is and then buy some more turmeric next week from the organic section from Kroger's. What I have right now are four pieces that I don't see any rhizomes on but from another video they said to try to just put it in a sunny window for a few days and some water to see if that helps but your suggestion about letting the cuts which are very small have a few days to heal is also a great suggestion. Your explanation is very good because you show all of the details and have thought through what would be necessary if you were just doing this on a very small basis. I look through your playlist selection and didn't see anything about growing onions or garlic so I hope that you will consider that in the future and I'm also going to review your growing of Ginger thank you very much God bless you and it's a great haircut comment from kit in Newark Ohio

    I'm interested in growing turmeric because it is anti-inflammatory and will help with my osteoarthritis. With full-spectrum fertilization including micronutrients and trace minerals I can produce a very high quality crop. Same thing for ginger, which is also anti-inflammatory.

My only fear is buying a mix with fertilizer and adding the fertilizer that you talked about and it being too much

    Thank you for covering all the important points on this. How do you store the rhizomes for replanting if that can be done and what's the best time to start rhem indoors. I'm in Georgia and it's January 2013. Thanks again.

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just store them in some kind of cardboard box. They usually begin to sprout while stored. If you have a greenhouse can plant a time, if not just plant close to when the temps stay above 60°f. Really though the warmer the better for planting

    What if I left a whole bunch of turmeric in a plastic bag and now its sprouting green leaves, should I just stick them in dirt and water them? They're somewhat dry but the leaves look very healthy and they're not flimsy.
