    I have been growing ginger for several years. Super super easy. I treat it like a house plant. I started after some ginger I had bought a the grocery stated producing horns. Lots of fun. I live in northern North Carolina. Good luck.

      I grew ginger last year and it was excellent. I was able to locate some organic ginger. After I grew it outside in a pot I brought a the inside and treated like a houseplant through the winter. The smell throughout my house was wonderful.

    I plan to try growing some ginger in some window boxes on my front porch. Since the window boxes are rectangular and not too deep there should be room for the rhizomes to spread. If only the piece from the grocery store will begin to sprout then I can get started.

    I grew ginger from a root from the store, I keep it in a pot on the front porch where it gets sun 85% of the day. It went wild and I am ready to harvest as they are coming to the top and protuding from the dirt. They are about 2 ft. Tall. I am in zone 7-9, we have been hitting 40 at night so I might be taking it in soon. Thank you! Love the video

    I'm amazed that you ate the turmeric and ginger raw! This will be my first year growing ginger and galangal and I was thrilled to find this video - thank you. So surprised that galangal turned out to be the hardiest. I even bought some fresh Thai ginger to grow!

      I planted all three and the galangal also the toughest, zone 9a farther N. California. Also the parts outside my drip system only ones that endured, even tho it's my citrus area and not watered with high frequency. All under fairly heavy wood chip mulch.

    I have been growing ginger. Galangal will get to be 8 ft tall and does not die down. It is harder to harvest because the new shoots grow on the outside. Tumeric grows in layers in pots and is the easiest to grow. Zingerber grow laterally and not vertically unless you place your ginger sideways. Tumeric will sprout a month after harvest. Zingerber, I harvest after it blooms and dies down Nov-Jan. I keep in in a tray in the shade with a little bit of peat moss for moisture. I plant it in pots again around March-April. It can be harvested in 5 months after it starts growing, but has to be harvested once it blooms or it will just crowd and get a lot smaller.

    I Live in zone 5 which is not a place where any of those plants will not be happy in the winter. I plant them all in 30 gallon totes. I wheel them outside for the summer, then bring them in and grow them under lights for the fall and winter. They thrive either way, and it's great to be able to have fresh anytime I want it. The taste of all three of these is so much better when harvested fresh then when bought at the store.

    We grow ginger in two dollar window boxes on a large window sill beside our birds' habitat protected by 18" wide galvanized wire 1/4" hardware cloth. We have budgies. They love eating the greens off exactly level with the top of the hardware cloth. Yet we still get almost a year's worth of ginger plus rhizomes to plant right back in. The hardware cloth barricade has a scrap of hose along the top edge as a soft landing spot for the birds.

    Did the lighter turmeric taste a bit like green mango? If so you have what they call Mango Ginger, it's actually a kind of turmeric Curcuma amada. Sometimes it ends up being shipped out with regular turmeric. In the Indian market near me, people will pick thru for one or the other. That's how I learned about it. It's mainly used as a pickle in India

    I'm growing some of theses things for the 1st time and find this useful information, clearly I'm doing the shade part a little wrong tho they are doing OK in too much sun 9a. A couple naive questions: 1) the leaves are often used in cooking with galangal I believe--what about ginger and turmeric? 2) is it practicle to simply store rhizomes in the ground and harvest as needed? (part of this was answered...thanks!)

    • @wendiland
      @wendiland  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leaves of ginger and turmeric can be used to fragrant food as well, but most people use tuber since flavor is more intense. I think would be fun to use leaves as a plate to hold your food, or wrap food to grill. Best to only harvest when needed and leave the rest in soil to retain freshness. If you get cold damp winters, it’s best to harvest in fall to prevent rotting. Good luck with yours!

    I suggest that you plant the ginger at the top of the soil with just some soil covering it.

    Hi Wendi, so glad you showed us your "real" ginger harvest. I live in Zone 10 and even though I planted ginger in a more sunny location I still got the same results as you. Will definitely try again, can't wait to see your new results too.
