- While the new Emblems might be the big story, the Ancient Welll added with Fire Emblem Engages Wave 3 DLC update is a huge game changer due to how many skill points and items it provides.
I go over how the well works, what units benefit most from it, and which tier level of well output gives the most bang for your buck.

Interestingly, the well only seems to consider the buy value of an item, so staves and consumibles count for their full value for the well even if they only have a single use left.

Lindon does have one niche beyond SP: Staff proficiency. This means he and Pandreo are the only units who can use Warp and Rescue in griffon knight, which is the only way to get a six move unit to use a movement staff, outside of high bond rank Micciah or promoted Hortensia. It's not the biggest deal in the world but it is something to consider, especially if you want pandreo in a different class than griffon.
That's a good callout, warping griffon knight is definitely a niche!
I think Hortensia well worth the master seal, but nothing wrong with another 6 move flying warper. I didn't know Pandreo or Lindon could do that.
Ivy also has B staves for the movement ones, like Griffin Pandreo/Lindon fwiw.
There’s also his personal skill that buffs crit if he uses a lower rank weapon than his enemy, give him an upgraded dire thunder with Corrin engrave, and he’ll have two 50% chances to crit the enemy. He does have lower magic than a well trained Citrinne who I used Dire Thunder with, but that opened her up to use Corrin instead with fire vein so it was worth it for me.
As well as carrying 3-4 staves, with more options than the rest of my army that playthrough (where I’m not using Hortensia).
He might not be worth using every playthrough, depending on if people have trained Celine and Citrinne or if they have enough other magic units, but if someone has died or fallen off, it opens a spot he can easily fill and do his funny niche stuff. Either way, I’m glad he’s in the game
Mauvier also has this boon, definitely the best use I've found for him on maddening
So, fishing tips. If you're also feeding and petting Sommie, you can completely bypass interacting with all the fishing mechanics. Starting a fish at half health lets you just hold back and mash A and you'll catch it before it escapes. If you initially hook a fish you do not want to catch, you can let it escape and this does not take up a fishing use; it does, however, lower your bond rank with Sommie a bit, so you can't do it infinitely and still start fish at half health.
Yeah pretty much every small, medium, and lower tier large fish can be one cycled as long as you mash hard. The largest fish take slightly more effort but you get so many bond fragments in return that I don’t mind at all.
Love these tips, especially the one about letting fish go. I was worried about losing the fishing point if I let it go.
Do you know if there is any way to speed up the bait part, waiting for fish to appear? That is honestly the most annoying part as it can sometimes take 10 sec+ to appear, making it over half the time spent fishing.
@@aaronparry2636 There's a cheat code to speed it up, but other than that I don't know any tricks.
I aways thought that mashing A as fast as possible was the proper way to fish in the game... Is a bit harder with the largest ones, but it was the only way I was doing since the beginning...
@@OkMakuTree slightly more effort? I really don't know how to fish large fish, they can take a whole minute of mashing and pulling only to still lose.

I’m very confused why this wasn’t at launch bc this really help mitigate my biggest problem with Engage is SP costs. Kinda sad I beat the game before this was available bc this would’ve made the experience so much better.
Hard was already a little too easy as is.
With the well (and DLC) in existence, I might not be able to go back to hard anymore
@@skeletonwar4445 then how do they expect you to get higher leveled skills. And it feels worse for blind players bc they wouldn’t know what each emblem grants and higher chance they use SP on a skill that’s outclassed for something else later on and feels like a waste of SP.
I've found that by the time you reach Solm (maybe earlier) on Maddening difficulty, your party is strong enough to auto-battle lvl.1 Tempest Trials.
While on Maddening, this doesn't reset the Somniel (on easier difficulties, you can grind well/stable/arena by auto-battling TTs), it does complete achievements and provide a good source for bond fragments if you hit a bottleneck
I'm on my fourth run and still haven't touched the Tempest Trials. I didn't know they gave bond fragments.
@@lanceareadbhar They don't explicitly reward you with bond fragments, but you beat up tons of enemy units auto-battling TTs. This completes combat achievements that reward you with fragments.
outer realm battles do this too, and you can just use one unit to finish faster, and if you lose it still use the well/arena/farmyard, so if you are patient enough, you can kill 3 birds with one stone.
The well resets after the relay trials. (As do all the other Somniel events).
This means you can build up your well repeatedly and quickly (and do arena, and run around getting pickups) after 2 short turns in the trials.
Honestly though, it kind of cheeses the game. Gives your characters massive weapons/skills early on and everything is easy
And relay trials give stat boosters and promo items...
Just for the record. I don’t you actually have to complete a chapter in order for the well to work. All I think you need is to complete any one battle and you’re good.
I use an random outer realm battle. Use 1 unite done in 1/2 turns . And use the arena for extra XL for someone and farm yard. 3 stones with one bird
Giving the player more SP in the earlygame, and just generally giving them more SP control through the whole game is already a huge increase in QoL. The fact that you can also get rare weapons early is just a really nice bonus.
The well made engage way more fun. With the skill books I can raise a good deal of units to get 2500 sp as that's around the gold star to get the 3 rings exo boost. Tiki aptitude and lucina assist for damage for ealry and late game raising.
Weapon wise throwing one iron weapon and getting one back with a book is all ups and no downs keeping money cost low too.
While I don't think the well is a good mechanic for your first run. I do think it adds more fun to future runs. This feels like it should only be in New Game+ which would really help this game since I don't really want to do some of the DLC maps again.
@@lanceareadbhar it's fine for first runs if you just throw in doubles of items. It can help double your money and skill books are never bad.
Though I wish the scale was lower for 3 as early master seals is definitely great to have.
I have a good way of pre-locking rewards from the ancient well.
1. I save my game BEFORE putting items in the ancient well.
2. Once I put items in the well, I go into a paralogue/story and save the game again in A DIFFERENT SLOT BEFORE beginning the chapter.. ***this is important***
3. Finish that paralogue/story chapter and DO NOT SAVE.
4. Go check the ancient well.
5a. If i don't like the drops reload the save in step 1 and repeat from step 1.
5b. If I like drops I reload the save in step 2 then proceed to step 6.
6. Quit the paralogue/story that you are in and do a chapter that you like.
7. After you beat the chapter that you want the rewards in ancient well will be the same.
note: I don't use Jean in maddening so I save and use his chapter to pre-lock the rewards. His map is the easiest one to do. :)

I haven't used Jean at all ever but he is probably the most broken unit in that you can get him to grow any stat you want at almost 100% growth rate. It's not as fun as other units though.
But he has a max speed growth of 95% which is higher than any other unit so there's that.
(Starsphere = 15%, Griffin Knight = 40% speed growth and his personal speed growth is 40%).
Goldmary can get to 100% DEF growth so she matches his max growth there.
I suppose this is fine if you are okay with redoing a chapter or prologue. Best to do it on a fast maps
If you can consistently do 3 star (so maybe buy 5k worth of items from the armory with the funds you get) you can do both paralogues (assuming you wait to do them) and ch7,8,9 for an expected value of 2250 SP.
Which is crazy because that's like, two canters right there
You can also throw in some of the free steel weapons that you get as well as some of the starting equipment that came with the units you are not using.
With help from the well and veronica's SP skill, I was able to get my paladin Alear lunar brace plus and speedtaker (while holding sigurd). Also everyone has easily gotten canter+ and quite a few units have gotten their second skill too
its not just every chapter, its every battle, so if you go do a skirmish battle, and come back the well will be updated

I love the well, on my previous madenning playthrough i found that panette doesnt really need ike or any emblem 😂 but i didnt have enough sp to get wrath so i had no choice but to put it on her, now with the well she now has vantage ++ and wrath, and im now free to give ike to another unit like timerra who needs help to snowball. My lapis is also rocking it with alacrity and sword power+5 😂 , alcryst now has solar brace+ 😂 , goldmary has speed+5 and speed taker , its crazy.
If you do have dlc the well really makes the two stat buffs like str/dex a very possible set to grab at the final tier I was able to do a lower investment diamont in maddening that way since between sp conversion and about 400 sp threw well to get up to that 8400sp cost
I find the three star to be not quite sustainable in terms the recyclables you'd like to be putting back into the well, and I needed to resort to buying iron weapons a couple of times from the shop to keep my investments efficient to 5000. It's obviously what you want to be doing as often as possible, but I think a few two star pulls, especially early on, are quite justified. Your weapon economy can take a real blow if you start going for three stars off the rip and get a couple of duds.
Yeah, if you get unlucky with early pulls, or if you want to actually use some of the well items, you sometimes have to do a level 2 if you don't buy items. Which you probably don't want to do since money is pretty tight before you get the money from Brodia.
@@actuallizard is it a good idea to use your money for the well instead of donations? I didn’t optimize donations in my first run, but it seems like the ores you get for donating are really a big help
@@joeyjose727 so what I do with this. Is I make sure I have dogs in the farm area. Then put 3 star well. Go to an outer realm match. Use 2 unites and suicide my team . Go back to farm yard get the Metals and ofc more dogs more chances for silver. Then go to well. Drop 3 stars. I use the gol 3 star get more benefits from books for price. I always try to keep 2-3k money for items just in case
Yeah, definitely don't put anything I that you don't want to lose early in the game as there are some unlucky pulls. You'll definitely make out in the long run as I've been doing some 4 star pulls if I get really lucky, but short term you can get very unlucky.
It sounds like they drew some influence/inspiration from Dragon Quest 8. In the original release of Dragon Quest 8, you could only craft so many items so fast (roughly one craft/item upgrade per 10 minutes of play time). So the pacing was way better. Instead of upgrading 1000 herbs into 500 high herbs over one long 4 hour crafting grindfest, you'd upgrade whatever you could over a long time while also doing other tasks. It's always been the best crafting system imho because of that and its puzzle aspect. This ancient well sounds like them implementing a similar system into Fire Emblem, just instead of 10 minutes of play time it's one story battle's time. :)

did one 5* after some anne grinding got stat booster but its HP lol ya stick to 2- 3* with the occasional 4* even as DLC user anymore and you will end up with excess sp and your better off going for 2442 donation earlier for a huge influx of ingots when paralogues come around and use all that to be able to actually max out some weapons could also make upgrading some of S rank weapons not a complete meme. or you can go go all meme in and sell pretty much everything you have to lvl 5 donate ferine to get Venomous sub chapter 10 .

just to clarify, by “chapter”, you mean battles right? i’ve noticed that the well reset everytime i finished a skirmish/training/chapter battle. i am also playing on Hard so not sure if this changes for Maddening.
Yup any battle will do! I just forget about skirmishes and training sometimes because I don't really do them.
I don't know if this changed after your video, but it is after every battle, not just chapter. You can complete every overworld map and head back after each one.
Finally i can actually get lunar brace its a dream come true.
I bounce between three and four stars depending on how good the well has been to me. I usually throw back the weapons and keep the staves and SP books and I've definitely made out from my original investment.
I've had more success with 3 star. I just go to our realms and use 3 units and usually get good results.
I do 3 and 5 star, sometimes with 5 star i get enough for an other 5 star
acutally you can claim stuff from the well after any battle cause ive done skirmishes and i could claim stuff
What I like about the Well is really I know how to SPEND my money and resources WISELY (thanks to Horror games with currency like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space where even MONEY was a finite resource you had to SPEND WISELY or "you're going to have yourself a BAD TIME!" and past Fire Emblem's BEFORE the Gold DLC! Frankly I think the Divine Paralogues and Fell Xenologues are the EXP/GOLD DLC, noticed on Hard mode ALOT of Skirimishs that popped up in completed stages on those locations had HIGH odds of SILVER Corrupted appearing for the Divine Paralogues and gold ones appearing in the Xenologues! Found the WYRM'S that appear on the Ivy and Timerra map drop TWICE the 2,000 Gold Gold Corrupted USUALLY drop if their the Gold ones and it was ALWAYS the Gold Corrupted Skirmishs on the map you fought Diamant and Alcryst on! There was ALWAYS two Gold Wyrms, so that made it 8,000 Gold per map!) So I would get some good weapons from Forge REAL Early (especially thanks to the Dogs usually dropping more Steel and Silver Ingots! Weirdly for the LONGEST TIME on Maddening till I think Chapter 12 or 13, I didn't see a SINGLE dog and was stuck with Four Dogs and a CAT by the time I got Alcryst) so when I got weapons I had no use for ANY of my builds, current OR later on! I frankly found the well to be a GOOD alternative to get rid of the bloat. If I can without too much cost I would take a Four Star gamble! But usually with the fact BARELY if EVER a Skirmish would appear on Maddening, I'd take the Three Star to "Spread it out" (Frankly speaking Riderbane is useful on anyone NOT using Sigrud and AFTER Chapter 10 when you lose access to him and his Riderbane, but Polearm was so DISGUSTING with that LOW HIT rate that I just made it FODDER for the Well if I ever got one or two! Great Weapons also got the Well unless they were SILVER, which saved me having to waste resources or money to get them!) Since Three and Four ALWAYS got me a book or two and usually a Adept would drop, The Well Mechanic made the game EVEN more akin to a Roguelike where Runs would be completely different (I'm a RANDOM Growth man, so I like this concept ALOT and hope the WELL remains in Fire Emblem's that have NO durability, hell even if they have durability, we know you'll be STOCKED with alot of useless not needed stuff! Maybe make the ability to break them down into material for blacksmithing would be nice along with exchange! I did have a dislike for Monster Hunting BIRDS for fucking Mithril!)

If you plan for an entire playthrough, you'll still feel the bond fragment shortage a little bit but not nearly as much

Best tip I've seen is to throw in a single iron weapon each time if you don't wan to go for a highroll. Its enough to get 2 star which will basically always give back at least 1 iron weapon. So self sustaining bonus skillbooks at no extra cost.
I need extra physics so badly I didn’t know 3 star wells were that self sustaining so this is a great boon
Also me from the future. Doing a xenolouge counts as a chapter passing so you can get more chances for SP Books that way

The importance of 4 star wells is getting as many of them before chapter 10 so you can inherit their skills

@@leargamma4912 basically, "don't interrupt. We'll see the payoff later." Used for things that need time to "cook" before they become sensible or good or whatever criteria you're judging the thing on.
Those dont help much, as they are A Rank so you need to promote first, the FEH weapons are better for Earlygame tbh.

You don't even have to complete a chapter. You just have to complete a map
or do an outer realm battle, win or lose.

The Well is RNG but it’s a brilliant way to squeeze more resources out of unneeded items.
Never using a Silver Greataxe? Chuck in the well and you might get stuff like Thoron, Expert scrolls and Brave weapons! It’s incredibly fun and means getting SP isn’t a meme.
i wish that i could believe this dlc wasnt the devs cynically cordoning off essential features for $30. i played at launch and after wave 3 and the game feels so much more complete now
The well and stuff are free updates DLC is the bracelets and xenologue
@@haveagoodday7021 it's more than just that. as much as I enjoy chapter 11 's courage to make Alear stumble and lose the rings they'd gained, you don't get emblems that can help fill Celica or Micaiah's niche in base game.
Emblem Soren and Veronica are the only emblems in midgame that feel built for Mages, and Soren also has the only siege tome, a longtime staple of FE that isn't in base game
@@DarkSoulsSauron The game doesn't really need a siege tome and Lyn is kind of a siege tome anyway. I treat the DLC as a New Game + mode which I hope they add as I don't want to redo some of the DLC paralogues again and they break the EXP curve of your best units while your worse units sit on the bench.

unlucky, in my well spam using the outer realm trick, i was able to get everyone mastersealed,/ and a few units second seal. and everyone who i planeed to have end game, all hand lineage and tiki starsphere, ms. ofc it was time consuming buuut it was worth it. ofc im broke a'f now but def worth it. currently, everyone who I plan to use as a main team and maybe back up units all have enough sp to get all the skill i want thanks to the well, ofc it was some grinding but worth it. good luck
The ancient well is awesome! Being able to turn relative deadweight growth units like Anna into actual contributors with extra SP, seals, and weapons makes them way more fun to use in early game Maddening.
the well does not hurt lindon and other late game unit. it just lets early game units function
I wish skills weren’t tied to SP but instead tied to bond levels. That would have made the well unnecessary entirely. Streamlining the game to be more accessible to new players and not punishing hardcore players for having determination when they see Hold Out +++ has a dang near +6000 SP price tag on it. Its a shame but Im actually very glad the well is here. It turns a non-replayable game into something completely different because when the time comes when we have no rings, we can actually have a decent army with Canter equipped😂

I like how now that the SP issue is solved, now the issue of this system has just shifted to a bond fragment issue. Bandaid solutions are pretty sketch.
Are bond fragments required? Can’t you just raise bond levels from grinding battles with the emblem equipped on the character who’s bond level you need to raise? Just don’t wanna needlessly scare players by telling them that fishing is the only answer to bond fragment bottlenecks. The game is not so limiting. (It is.)
As a non-DLC and non-online guy, this feature has no use to me. Hope those who enjoy patches enjoy this feature though.
