Hi Ian, good video as ever, and some salient points on both the good and bad. I would absolutely include the supercharging network as a major plus point, its reliability, and the way you roll up, plug in, unplug and drive off without having to mess about with different charging apps, rfid and nfc cards, dongles etc, or even whether you can find a card to pay with to activate things (which your wife just walked off with to order and pay for lunch at the services). Another plus for me is also the way any issues can be sorted out with service via the app, and a lot of things can be remote diagnosed. I also like the way Tesla are completely up-front about premium connectivity - Unlike Renault (for example) where it’s Included for 3 years, then it switches off, you lose a bunch of features, and nobody, not even the dealers or importers or Renault in France know how to reactivate it, how much it costs or how you buy it (and the online store that might offer a purchase option has been broken for 4 years to the extent it doesn’t recognise Renault VIN numbers required to register to access it). On the downside, I really wish they’d made provision under the rear boot floor, to be able to store an emergency wheel (even though they don’t include one). Just space to store one without having to modify the under boot foam with a knife/saw would be nice. I don’t have range anxiety, but I do get a touch nervous about planning a long trip without an option to carry a spare wheel. It’d be nice if they included the Tesla tyre compressor / repair kit as part of the standard equipment when buying. I’m looking forward to your performance boost video - it’s something I’ve been thinking of.
I bought my MY DM on May 2023. I love this car. Before I drove an Hyundai Ioniq Electric from 2020, that I still have it. The Ioniq is more electric efficient, 12KWh/100km. MY it does 16KWh/100Km. Sorry in Portugal we do not use Imperial measures. 😎. Another very important thing you did not talked about is the EPA filters. If you go behind a Ace car, no smoke neither no smell comes in the Tesla. The other veichels you have to close the recicling air. Just to mension one very good thing. A less good thing is the turning curve, it is very bad. In small spaces to turne sometimes is a nightmare, lots of maneuvers... I like a lot your videos, thanks for sharing.
Hi Ian, a big one for me, having previously owned an Audi, is the electronic features they stick in their latest cars is years behind say VW, unless you want to pay an extorionate amount. Thius leads to wanting to swap your car every 2 years to get the newer features. They also make it so any updates have to be done at the dealers at a cost of however many hours. With the Tesla, the RWD has pretty much all the same tech as the LR apart from a few speakers and smaller battery. But, they allow us all to do over the air updates and keep improving the product. The fact you could buy a "faster speed" or add FSDas an extra is a massive plus point.
Yes, great assessment. I agree with all you say. But one enormous omission in the Plus point list. The Tesla Charging Network which for me, over two years, both in the UK and Europe has never let me down. Range anxiety is not something Tesla owners suffer from. For non-Tesla owners, charging away from home is an expensive lucky dip. I’m surprised you didn’t mention it. For me it’s possibly the biggest plus point of all.
Another great video Ian and couldn’t agree more about the hopeless automatic wipers, they’re useless, sometimes work when it’s sunny and bright and then sometimes don’t work when it’s tipping it down 🤷♂️. Just had my insurance renewal and it’s almost doubled 😳!
I can confirm that my MY built early 2024 has a good ride for comfort. It is firm but not uncomfortable by a long way. I think the ride comfort will get better with the next version as well.
I can’t believe that it’s harsh, noisy and not compliment enough for a 59k car it’s unacceptable it’s even worse than the m3 and is the major failing with the car I am comparing the Y with a 100thousand mile m3 but even so! Drive a Citroen EC4 if you want to see what it should be like. It’s not a heavy car but American auto makers historically can’t do suspension, and they are following on in that fine tradition.
Sorry Tesla, but I'm an old enough "fuddy duddy" to not want a fondle slab to work a car. Physical controls and buttons for me please - very happy with my Kia Soul Maxx on that score. The "one and only thing" I would want from T is the charging network (or more specifically, the reduced costs and operation of the T charging network when you're in a Tesla). FSD is "too far away" here in the EU (yes, Britain is part of the EU, fudders) for a swap to T to be worthwhile to me. Keep up the excellent content Ian.
Haha, you're SO RIGHT about them being "flappy..."! Omg, it's like having a hyped-up non-driver Mother-in law sitting next to you, providing a running commentary about any possible risk she can think of. "LOOK OUT, there's a pedestrian on the opposite side of the road 100yds ahead!" / "LOOK OUT, there's a cyclist half a mile ahead!". Then she'll jam the handbrake on for you, at the same time, if you have the cruise control on... It's embarrassing. So, I have a routine every time I get in, to stop as much as I can at the start, but some have to be disabled before putting it into Drive, and others have to be done after putting it into Drive... And, I never, ever, use Autopilot cruise control, it's the only car I've driven in the last 25 yrs that I cannot drive with any form of cruise control, I'm not having the brakes going on willey-nilley, at the drop of a hat. Otherwise, great cars, I drive a same-age M3LR, and completely agree with all your comments. Edit: Elon needs to chill too, can't bear his ridiculous statements.
Great video again Ian. One thing I would add to the GOOD list is the toys, Boombox, Light Show, built in games, Netflix, You Tube etc, etc. On the Bad list Auto Pilot ! My previous car was a Volvo V90 (late 2020) which had pilot assist, the Volvo equivalent of Auto Pilot, which actually worked ! On the Tesla I find that it switches off very easily, if you give slightly too much input, indicate or change lanes it switches off and you have to double tap the drive stalk again to switch it back on. In the Volvo when you indicated to change lanes to overtake on a motorway it would dis-engage and once you were in the other lane re-engage automatically. It worked very well and I used it a lot, but on the Tesla it just feels awkward and a more of a nuisance than an assistance so I dont like to use it. But maybe it will be improved in a future software upgrade.
My Model Y wipers were useless but seem absolutely fine now in the last month, since they linked the little screen graphic to the left scroll wheel with the update. It's a fine car, but the hustle thing, ive had a few little duels and the brakes are shit scary when you need to slam on having made the most of the 400bhp, and the seats are quite soft (lovely comfort though) for the hard cornering the car is capable of. It's a fast wagon but no sports car. The ride on my June 2022 is very poor round town but fine elsewhere (motorway). Build and trim quality is very patchy, cheaply finished if you are used to BMW. Agree with most of what you say and overall I like it a lot and enjoy driving it. A big big PLUS is the range and integrated charging and Nav, also having a Volvo C40 EV in the household in that respect its not in the same league.
Great video Ian ! I’m with you on everything. Those screaming warnings drive me crazy. But in all I just love my 2022 MY Tesla so much every day. I plug it in the garage and go. I wondered about Elon Musk effecting Tesla sales with his nonsense behavior. Thank you talking about the elephant in the room. I’m in the U.S., California to be specific and wish he’d stick to his business. We have enough stuff going on over here with the elections coming up. Our country is so divided. Yeah, the car insurance painfully high. Glad you mentioned that too.
Hi Ian, love the channel and you’re a great presenter. I know the channel is called JGAT but I for one would really appreciate it if you were able to test some other equivalent EVs and compare against the MY, which is undoubtedly the benchmark, but hasn’t really been updated for a while. Eg, how does it compare to the latest BMW or Mercedes equivalent vehicles? Price, efficiency, comfort, software, etc. Not in terms of which one is better, but just the similarities and contrasts. Thanks for all you do! 👍
Hi Ian, great video but I would of preferred to look at the lake in the background rather than the construction site behind you.. maybe next time reverse park 😂
Great channel, I have been using it as research and reasons to buy a MY Tesla, which I'm picking up this Friday and can't wait!! There is one thing I don't agree with you on, and that is Elon, I have actually gone for the Tesla, as well as my brother & 2 colleagues have, because of Elon. I know I will get shot down here, but I have broad shoulders.
Hi Ian, Yet again another good video . I'm thinking of getting Starlink what about a video on Starlink so others like myself get a good idea about installation and performance cheers
Collected my 2022 M3 RWD the same month as your MY. For me the main improvements have been, camera vision when the indicators are used, blind spot/collision warning if indicators are used and a potential collision is detected, matrix headlights, Tesla vision and improvements to the auto wipers - not perfect but significantly better imo. Have either been a passenger or driven a number of Model Y’s since their introduction to the UK - in latter models the suspension has definitely improved, however, recent tests of the Long Range RWD Y suggest this may have regressed. The M3 Highland is a far more refined car than mine and I would expect the revised MY to introduce similar refinements. As usual Ian your usual balanced and amusing review. For me the outstanding feature of the MY is its sheer practicality. Looking forward to your 80k review.
Glad to hear it still makes you smile after 2 years. I had mine for 4 months as my daily driver and it puts a BIG SMILE on my face every time I step inside! But I don’t know about it being bomb proof.. unless your referring to the Cybertruck?
I think the car will be bomb proof. Like all EVs there are few moving parts. All of the things that break easily on fuel cars aren’t here at all - clutch, turbo, head gasket, flywheel
Hi Ian, I agree on most of your good & bad points. I would add this: Bad: the rear seat fold-down cup-holder section in the Y is far too wide compared to the 3. We have both cars and the Y's rear seats become very cramped with the cup-holder section folded down (also makes connecting the rear seat belts extremely hard) so it gets rarely used.
Great to hear your thoughts after a good amount of time with the car. I still love mine after 7 months, and hope to feel the same at 2 years. One point of note, I believe Tesla declare the motors max output as 507bhp, however I think the software limits it to around 380bhp (hence the ‘only’ 4.8s 0-60. The acceleration boost takes it to around 460bhp I believe
Great review Ian. Here in the USA, with oil/gas much cheaper (we import only 1/2 of our oil), some of the benefit of running costs is negated (unless you're in California). Also, I wanted a Y-invert option (like in games) for the wiper control, since I was always rolling the control in the wrong direction! Finally, for me the worst is I have a WHITE Y/LR, like you, and at times the flat front is a bug magnet. I would have gotten a different color if I'd known. And b/c the Tesla has 'soft paint' I don't take it to the car wash and I wash it by hand. And the paint is more prone to rock chips than other cars (and I don't want to spend lots of $$ on PPF). Harder paint, Elon, please!
Hi Ian, I'm on my second Model S. I have a late 2020 S (which I bought secondhand with 9,000 miles on the clock) and would have been tempted to buy a new updated S if they'd produced a right hand drive version. However, I think I will now keep this car for the foreseeable. On the feel good side, I agree with your list, but with the S I would add that in my opinion, it looks great. The Y looks practical and functional. The S is ALSO practical and functional, but just looks so much better. I also prefer the fact that the S doesn't just have the central screen. This is particularly useful using Sat Nav where the central screen show the overall journey, but the screen in front of you shows the immediate turns etc. As for the dislikes...I agree with three of your five but my S has air suspension and is comfortable if you're just wafting along but tightens up if you start pushing things. Perfect. Also, it doesn't seem to nag so much. Just my experience.
Just found your channel, thinking of gettiing a tesla… one thing I would like to ask.… Have you slept in it...? I know strange question… Fab channel by the way..
Thanks for your thoughts Ian. We are almost 2 years in but much lower milage (11,000 - just checked the app) and agree pretty much with your list. I would add the app to the good points, it works really well (and I suppose its an inditement on a lot of stuff that something working as it should is singled out for praise!). On the bad points, I would add the door handles and lack of lighting of the charge port. The outside door handles are very hard to find in the dark, would be nice if they auto presented like they do on my S. Maybe its worse on our car as its blue, and the handles are black. Re the insurance costs, yes, they are dear but as you said its over 500BHP so pretty much any ICE with similar performance is very expensive. Anyway, look forward to watching future films
I have the 2022 RWD Model Y and I agree with all that except the warning alerts which I don't find an issue, perhaps down to smaller roads in your case. I've had all sorts of cars including some really nice little sporty GTi type models and this is more fun to drive than all of them. I've seen some people describing Tesla as the 'iPhone of EVs' like that's a bad thing, and I suspect they mean it's the 'boring obvious option', but I think it does have that sort of 'just works' feeling about it that I find is the same with Apple products. I'm 14 months and 21k miles into mine and still look forward to every single drive in it and despite doing a pretty high mileage and a lot of longer trips I've never regretted buying the RWD model....250 miles all day long, Summer and Winter.
One more thing: the only car that gave me the Feel Good factor that my 2023 Y/LR gives me was my 1990 Mazda Miata that I had for 30 years. Totally different feeling,, but both are/were pure enjoyment driving around (hah..so a stiff ride doesn't bother me even though I'm in my 70s).
I tested a Model Y this week and found the ride to be good relative to my 520D on M Sport suspension. I'll probably get a Model 3 next year unless the updated version of the Y is available in time. When I was collecting the car, the chap in front was grumbling because his referral code didn't give him money off the car.
I have a '22 Model Y with ~45K miles on it. haven driven it coast to coast in the US and I must say I agree with your assessment completely . . . even the part about Musk. My favorite thing about my Y is FSD. Fortunately for me, I can use it over here and while it is far from perfect but it is continually improving with regular updates fixing a few things with each update. The one feature missing from the Y is Rear Collision Warnings when I am backing out of a parking spot or driveway. Our Subaru and our Chrysler Van and every car I have driven since 2018 have this feature. WTF Tesla? If you can do AutoPilot, Rear Collision Warning should not be a problem!!!!! To add, Musk may be the only reason I part with my Y. If he continues down this absurd path he has charted with X and Trump, he will force me to dump this for a Hyundai or BYD if and when BYD become available in the US.
I would add the world wide charging network and the NACS interface are another HUGH plus for Tesla but now that the network is opening up to non-Tesla EVs . . . well, it will be much easier for me not to buy another Tesla in favor of one of the competition. Thanks Elon - - I bet your stockholders love you for this and how you are destroying the Tesla brand.
I got a Tesla because of what Elon is doing.. and over half the population voted for Trump in the United States. Trump derangement syndrome is no longer the majority.. Trump Vance 2024 let’s go!
I adjust the wipers myself without the auto. No need to take eyes off the road. Memorise the order of; off, auto, 2 intermittent, slow, fast. Hit the wiper button then scroll the settings using left scroll, keeping eyes on road. Easy.
I had the luxury of a model 3 in early 2019 from my employer. Since this year I bought a model y from my own money. So I have now more than 5 years of experience with Tesla cars. When I got the model 3 autopilot was far less annoying then it is now, lot have to do with legislation auto assisted driving. Things improved but the nags have become worse. It like a scary boy on Dutch roads, highways are mostly okay. For example it can’t handle road with artificial narrowing lines, about 15% of the edge there is a dotted line, it completely freaks out (breaking, beeping and so) when cars come head on. But it’s still a great car and takes lot of stress away when riding long stretches, it makes sure I take necessary rest stops to get coffee and stretch leg and limbs. Which makes road safer, no driver with hours of driving behind the wheel..So I agree on most of the points, I know it’s hard to have hardware but still not 100% working but it will become available when ready. I think this might also be a plus as no “expensive” retrofit is needed. Have fun and a Tesla
My ID5 wipers and matrix’s head lights are fantastic, the lights work instantly and you can literally see the back spot shadow the vehicle on the other side of the road perfectly. Still want a Tesla though, it will be our next family car.
Got our M3P a year ago and yes of course the acceleration and home charging from Solar is AMAZING...... but if I'm honest the most impressive thing so far has been the software update that added full Matrix LED Adaptive headlights FOR FREE! (oh you said that too lol but I disagree I would rather they fitted it and then enabled it later than didnt bother) BMW, VW, Audi etc... will charge you £000's for that on day one and tough if you dont take it you cannot retrofit.... Tesla gave it to me for nothing. And that's one of many new "features" or tweaks or upgrades.... amazing car and company, I love them. p.s. and your videos are really good, keep it going! p.p.s. I may be a weirdo but I like that the car beep beep beeps at me, rather have that than crash into something lol
Hi I’m seriously considering getting a Tesla model Y having taken one for a test drive, but I want to make sure I make the best choices as this will probably be my last car . I’m 72, (female but I like cars and driving - 2nd car 1971 MGB) I drive on average 1000 miles a month, once a month doing a long trip on the M1 up to North Yorkshire. My journey door to door is on average 220miles depending on where WAZE routes me. Do I buy the Y long range AWD or the slightly cheaper Y long range RWD? Do I buy a second hand one year old model? Or Do I wait for the release of the 2025 Juniper model? Do I buy it outright or lease it - the young woman (manager) informed me that leasing is the way to go and only my generation buy cars today. Quick calculation in my head was that changing my car every year 3 years would cost me more in the long term. I’m anticipating that I might not want/safe to be driving beyond my mid 80’s Any advice greater appreciated, thank you.
Got to be honest I have a 24 Model Y standard range and it's turning into one of the worst decisions I made. Car advertised as having 276 miles range, car at full charge is 244 miles indicated, in reality lucky to see 200. Current actual miles per kwh is 2.74 calculated not by the BS on the dash but the electric gone into it divided by miles out. As someone who exclusively superchargers by far the worst thing is the annoying battery drain when the car is just parked. If you even think about opening a door to get something out then the car fires everything up and battery loss, there needs to be something where it doesn't fire everything up until you press the brake or something. I washed my car the other day and because I'd opened the do to put some towels in there it immediately fired everything up which then you have to climb in ad turn it all off. But the most irritating thing is the amount of power this car will suck as soon as you point it toward a supercharger. I've seen it suck electric to the tune of 1500wh/mile before now 20minutes before I'm due at the charger. These cars are touted as being super economical when in reality that is only for people charging them at home.
I agree that the legal requirement to advertise WLTP doesn’t help - it is unlikely to achieve that. Then again the same is true with all EVs - and cars in general never get anywhere near their advertised mpg. 2.74 sounds outrageously low. You say it’s measured by your own maths - could you be in error? As for vampire drain, I’ve never ever had a problem. Sentry will use a bit of battery, but other than that? Nothing really
The newer OEM 2023 Tesla comfort suspension improvements can be retrofitted to older models. Alternatively, you can opt for aftermarket solutions like those from Mountain Pass
In next weeks video I test all three acceleration modes - chill, standard, sport. With a car this absurdly fast I don’t want the suspension to be that soft. A little more sidewall in these Michelin tyres has made a decent difference!
I fancy it but by how much has it increased your insurance? My location, age and of course, the car means I am paying 3.5X more than I paid for my X3 2.5 years ago. I am afraid to ask my insurers; even on line I can hear them rubbing their hands together and taking that intake of breath usually associated with tradesmen when viewing a problem.
From the USA here, with 2024 Y :) #2 Wipers, ya agrree. FSD, had for 30 days for free, very impressive even on backroads. #3 I dont find if bad at all, but our other cars are minis so you know.
I have turned off or down to their minimum sensitivity nearly all of the safety features you are describing toward the end of the video. When I first bought the car, I thought it was wonderful to have all of these safety warnings, but after driving it for even just a few weeks it became incredibly obnoxious and annoying to drive with all of those alarms screaming at you when you’re just driving normally.at this point I have almost all of them completely off or down to the minimum setting if I’m not able to turn them off completely. Still a great car.
Entertainingly the Outlander that preceded it - where I paid extra for safety features - was so bad that they had to do a physical recall. And the Polestar I’ve just driven? MY HANDS ATE ON THE STEERING WHEEL ALREADY STOP SHOUTING AT ME 😂
Just a recent tesla convert having spent years saying they have no spirit and are boring to drive. Standing corrected. It opens up new horizons for a motörhead, such a shame that diehard ICE drivers limit their horizons
I feel like my increase in Insurance _alone_ (over a 2007 Corolla) is going to more-than-offset any running-cost savings I'd otherwise accrue. But, doesn't matter. Very excited for Juniper to roll out eventually.
Well these 5 bad things won´t stop me from buying the new 2025 model Y, Elon has a vision for mankind and next year i will be part of that ecosystem. Thanks Ian Great video :)
Completely agree with you on most if not all points. With respect to Elon, I still wanted the car because it is a great car. But I had to think about it. I do know several people who didn’t go for Tesla because of Elon. I told them that most consumer stuff gets sold bij companies whose owner(s) may not have your morality or beliefs. You don’t have to like the guy, but he’s singlehanded changed the world of transportation. On the road and space.
Bollocks to self driving. It will not work right now. I was diving through France and it would travel at 30kph when the speed limit was 80kph and 80kph when the limit was 50kph. Often the car would not see the correct limit.
4. Warning Alerts I feel your pain. Frequently 6. I’m 1/2 way around a small roundabout. Someone on the entry lane to my left moves forward slightly. My car slams the brakes on. The driver behind me and I crap ourselves.
Try driving on a 110kph highway where at a particularly long, wide curve, a cyclist is traveling on the side (safely off the lanes by a wide margin) and AutoPilot freaks out because we're not yet into the curve and brings the car almost to a complete stop because from it's vantage point, the cyclist was directly in the way ahead of you. Kudos for seeing the cyclist and responding but minus-kudos for not factoring in the curve ahead that AutoPilot is supposed to be driving on too. AutoPilot has improved with updates a lot, but it still needs a lot more improvements to make it more aware (somewhat in parity with ongoing FSD improviements).
@@DataRebelYXX yes. Sometimes it’s the cyclist. Sometimes the truck 100 metres ahead coming around the corner, inline but on the other side of the road. sometimes absolutely nothing just phantom braking. FIX IT ELON.
Ian Assuming its possible to fit after market suspension dampening ie shock absorbers (I'm not sure) to a MY have you been offered anything by the companies that make these to see if the ride can be less harsh?
10:57 - depends on perspective. The Model 3 and model Y are both well within, and sometimes under, the average price for a new car in their respective category. Especially when considering all the features that come with a Tesla. If you’re looking for a $600 car, Tesla is just not for you. I will say that I am in the process of making a purchase of a secondhand Model 3 and this car is a 2023 model year and it is going to cost $22,606. Not bad for a used car that is only one year old.
Agree with all you say except FSD and auto wipers!, FSD does not work because European legislation does not allow it! Hopefully it will come next year, this is in their roadmap. For auto wipers use RainX or similar, I have never, ever, had an issue in over two years ownership, yes the odd wipe when bright sun flashes over the screen but our other car also does this when that happens, other than that it just works.
I’ve got a ‘22 Y long range and can’t seem to get a clear answer on bhp. Is it 507bhp cos I’ve seen 386 bhp quoted and to me it feels more like the latter. Still plenty for a family car I’m just curious!
I honestly don’t know. And I’m not sure it matters. But I have seen 460hp showing on my Teslogic app now that I have added the Acceleration Boost, which points towards 507!
@@justgetatesla fair enough. It matters to me I’m a bit pedantic about horsepower 🤣 just seems any other car it’s easy to get an accurate figure. I have to say though, I didnt buy it for that or I’d have gone for the performance. May well do the upgrade in time though 👍
I was very close to buying a Tesla in January but ended up going for a Skoda enyaq 85 edition. Why? On balance it was working out a lot cheaper per month and I was getting similar or better range to the standard range MY (I get roughly 280-300 miles) because it was 0% finance and Tesla were 9.9% . I’m very happy with the Enyaq as it has everything I’m looking for in a car (buttons and indicator stalks being a couple!) but I can’t help think “what if id bought the Tesla ?”. And yes, Elon did come into the decision making process too .
I looked at Tesla but didn’t bite. Interesting you say it’s comfortable even for long journeys. One of the things that put me off both the M3 and MY, was the lack of thigh support with the seats. We have a VW ID3 which has an extendable thigh support for the front seats. The comfort is fantastic. Just to pick up on your comment about the wipers. It beggars belief that a company which can design autonomous driving can’t even get the wipers to work properly. That’s just very poor. Our ID3 wipers are faultless.
It’s horses for courses. My wife loved the seats in her Ioniq. They made me hurt. Some people say the daft touch controls in VAG cars are good, others hate them. Me included
The rear wheel drive Y is now only available in long range only .0% pcp over 48months its £381. With the 4 wheel drive £70 more. Is the AWD worth it, have you tested the rear wheel drive?(;£11k deposit £10k from me £1k from your referral code)
Sadly for you my referral code is full for 2024 - you will have to find someone else’s- sorry! I’ve driven RWD Model 3 and prefer the extra grip you get from AWD
Your Model Y LR does *not* have 507 hp at your disposal! The potential max power of both motors added together might well add up to 507 hp, but you're not getting it from a standard LR. It is somewhat less than 400 hp (a bit more than that for short periods if you stump up for the "Acceleration Boost" option). If you drove a genuine 500+ hp car you'd notice the difference...
About 460 showing on my app with acceleration boost. Point is that *the registration document* shows the figure declared by Tesla which is 507hp. And they charge premiums accordingly… 🫣
@@justgetatesla For whatever reason your V5c is showing the power figure for a Model Y Performance. It wouldn't be the first time DVLA have recorded incorrect information, nor will it be the last. Doesn't really make any difference - it's just a number printed on a piece of paper, quite possibly as the result of someone somewhere down the line ticking the wrong box. Your Model Y LR does not put down 507 horsepower.
Earlier in the summer I replaced a windshield on a BMW IX EV. The guy who owned it is a mechanical engineer and I asked him why the BMW and not a Tesla. Having driven a few in the past my take on them was cheap, cold, not practical and too tech heavy and since they can be hacked, and have been proven to be stolen, not worth the money. The owner asked me what I thought of the teslas and I told him as much and added they feel like a fridge, a basic appliance and nothing more. He agreed and said that’s why he went with the BMW, since it had more feel, more road connection and felt and looked like a regular car and not a pompous, pretentious, arrogant POS. Now that they have put the shifter into the touchscreen and the indicators as button on the steering wheel, that is even more reason to hate it. Also FSD still doesn’t work properly. Someone from China last week had their FSD going and the car still ploughed into a road construction site. As for comfort, having driven from Toronto to Cleveland twice and back in two different days in a mazda3 hatchback, that was more comfortable than any Tesla. And driving from Toronto to Halifax, 32 hrs on 5 hours of sleep in a Honda fit, was also more comfortable than a Tesla. I have also driven a few Hyundai EVs and they felt more comfortable, more together as a car and felt like a better quality product than any Tesla I have driven. And would be my choice for an EV if the infrastructure was ever built to work and support the EV market.
The joy of being able to have free choice is that not everyone has to agree! Personally (having previously had BMWs) I think the IX is gopping. But if that works for your friend then great!
@@justgetatesla not my friend, a customer. I’m also not a fan of tesla’s one piece rear glass/roof glass since that is $15,000 Canadian to replace as it’s a massive labour intensive process just to remove the interior trim pieces.
Tesla does have a maintenance schedule. It's the same as every other ev in that there's no oil changes etc but don't kid yourself that mechanical elements like brakes don't need checked. Tesla call it maintenance so they can push the line that there's no servicing but they're not immune to the same basic maintenance as every other car. Tesla publish the maintenance schedule. It's actually slightly more than on my ev but very similar. I use cleevely ev to carry out the checks every 2 years. Shocked they've still not fixed the wipers and lights. They were useless on my 2020 model 3 but they said it was down to the software being in beta. I've never had auto wiper issues on any car and I've had them on all cars since 1998 🤔 My model 3 was crazy on cruise control, it just had a mind of its own. Again tesla said it was due to beta software. Sounds like after 4 years it's no better.
I own a model Y built April 2022 so concur with just about everything you say. The warning alerts seem to go to pot after each update. The ride is harsh and Elon just annoys me. Can’t he just shut up and build great cars and rockets?
I have just bought a model y after over 100k miles in my model 3 done 500 miles in it, initial thoughts. 1: suspension and ride quality are absolutely crap! Everything else is as my 2020 m3 I am a bit disappointed to be honest, the M3 rides better and is quieter ( still crap though ) just not as crap.
Response to dislikes: Not Cheap, it's reasonable when you compare it with any ICE car that has similar performance numbers High Insurance: That is a knock on your insurance companies not Tesla. In the US my Model Y LR is actually cheaper than a BMW to insure Stuff not working Fair enough Ride Rough: That has some validity but I have taken a 2,500 mile round trips and had no issues, roads in US are also rough roads in many places Warning Alerts. I have only experienced that when car thinks I am too close to car in front, I also have the setting to medium Elon Musk: I agree he is socially inept and has no business owning a social media company. I refuse to use social media rather than not buy a Tesla. Why don't people not buy VW's when they are constantly lying about actual car emissions or Toyato cheating on safety issues.
It isn’t about politics. Truly. It’s about public trust. Trump supporters might not like it that Elon is putting people off, but he is. I just want Elon to do the things he is brilliant at - business. Leave the politics out of it
Here, here for the Elon comment. I've been a happy Model Y owner for a couple of years but now I worry that the hate for Elon, which I have sympathy with, makes it a target for vandals. I don't think I would buy another Tesla if he carries on as he is now.
@@justgetatesla That could be due to the high concentration of left wing thinking in the UK. Just a thought. Pretty sure he bought twitter to keep free speech alive. I love my Model 3 and Elon does not bother me. From a conservative Aussie.
Fantastic episode. I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say, especialy the comments concerning Musk. One small disagreement is with your comments about the auto wipers. I might be the only one, but ours are at the moment working well. Thank you, and keep up the good work!
When you’ve got $300B it really doesn’t matter if voicing your political opinion costs you a few sales. Anyone who chooses not to buy a Tesla because they don’t like Elon’s politics, is shooting themselves in the foot. Why deny yourself the best mass market car ever built.
As a byd owner I can relate to items 2 and 4. Item one the price, is not so bad partky because adas is not fully featured and doesn't excess hardware which is your item 3. Item five, well replace Musk's mastications with anti China sentiment.
Elon is insightful, he is correct in regard to migration, read Matt Goodwin stuff, then get back to me and tell me if it far right, the guy is an expert in this field the most diverse countries in the world have the lowest rates of trust.
As I said in the video, I have no interest in US politics. But he IS dividing opinion amongst owners and *potential* owners. Which isn't good for business.
My Tesla is fast. It's got no fun factor like my old four on the floor, sports car. Or even an old real tiny mini with a long gear stick. That was like driving a living machine. As a comparison French train electric TGV. Steam Flying Scotsman. That's the difference.Ones fast and soulless, the others is not as quick, but a living machine. Given the choice which would you travel to go and see.
I love old diesel trains more than old steam trains. But there are quite a few heritage electrics that sound fantastic. And I can still remember all the noises the old electric units used to make that ran in Manchester in the early 90s…
My sentiments exactly I think Elon Musk for want of a better word a little crazy especially and this has become more evident since he bought himself Twitter, but seriously what an engineer, I'm quite sure that if it wasn't for him electric car's would be year's behind what they are today. I prefer to separate musk and his Twitter antics and Musk the genius engineer as until someone else brings out anything as good as a Tesla, then Tesla will continue to get my custom. BYD seem to be selling compelling car's here in France with OTA updates, but for me, the integration of the supercharging network makes all the difference and Tesla ownership so easy.
Just my humble opinion, but maybe Elon’s alienation of liberals in the US is a good thing for the EV transition, the US is very divided and it seems like you can only be on one side or the other. Liberals were already sold on EVs, now with him joining Conservatives, they might be motivated to give Tesla a try, and fall in love, closing the gap.
*it’s not about American Politics*. Your liberals - Harris as a prime example - are conservative seen from a European perspective. The US is only one market and globally isn’t as significant as you might think. He is doing damage - that is now clearly evident. And the more that he tries to impose absolutist free speech in other places the more he does damage. There is no such thing as absolute free speech and he knows it.
@@justgetatesla The US is the largest market, making up about 45-50% of Tesla’s total sales. It’s true, the culture in the US, like most places, is different, and my opinion was based on the US market and its transition to EVs, there are numerous obstacles, politics being one of them. Agree to disagree on the absolute free speech. My family and I were immigrants to the US from a communist country. We very much value the 1st amendment, which basically protects almost all speech except for incitement to violence or illegal activity, true threats, and speech integral to criminal conduct. I don’t believe that “hate speech” should be banned since the country we came from used that regularly to suppress freedom and liberty which led to considerable suffering. I agree with Musk’s position on this, and clearly others do not. Experience changes perspectives, and there is no quicker way to change your perspective, then to truly see and experience evil, afterwords you operate from a different framework.
I’m not talking about Tesla market share, I’m talking about the global car industry. Tesla will not succeed if its reach beyond North America is limited. They’re doing a sensational job of selling cars in China, and have been leading edge in so many other markets. The focus needs to be on maintaining that lead, not fighting US-only culture issues on Twitter.
@@justgetatesla I see what you are saying. Even mad geniuses have emotions, and it looks like this is the result. At the end of the day, think about the irony here. Elon truly is a genius, and I can’t name any other person in modern history who has innovated more, accelerating human development. Elon has this emotional response, and now, as you acknowledge, others are willing to ignore what is probably the best EV, and the best charging infrastructure, due to, “an emotional response” to his emotional response. Haha, it’s the circle of emotional responses
I have a Volvo C40. It's great and certainly good enough that the Tesla advantage isn't enough to overcome my loathing of Musk. I really hope you care if people vote for Trump. Maybe in the next video you can discuss how people will feed themselves on Mars in a way that, if adopted on earth, wouldn't solve the issue here.
Picking up my model Y in a weeks time. My wife was dead against it because of Elon. I have had to sit her down and explain all the advantages of a Tesla and talk her round. My winning statement was that we weren't buying new and there for someone else had given Elon his profit .
Painful 4 & 5 ...yes, you are exactly right. The bings, bongs and screeches are absolutely mind-numbing. Musk is a nut case. How can the CEO of an electric car company back a presidential candidate who wants to shut down the entire EV market.
Please, note that Elon has always supported the Democrats, however, the Biden administration has been horrible against Tesla first by ignoring Tesla totally, then by harassing Elon and Tesla with all kinds of things e.g.. a ridiculous update of warning icons, cancelling his bonus. Elon has always said that there is no need for subsidies for EVs and there should be no need for the mandates, and he is right, it's a total waste of money Since there are only two candidates he supports the other No matter what EVs will be cheaper and by 2030 95+% of all new and used car sales will be electric, not hybrids and especially not hydrogen, lots of OEMs will not survive and new will enter the market
Could not agree more with your end of video summary of the dislikes. Conspiracy, theorist embarrassment. I will submit that Tesla sales are not negatively impacted, just based off of the sales numbers, but people who would otherwise easily buy one or not because of his ridiculous antics. It’s just that those Negative sales are offset by sales from people who are fans of his conspiracy theorizing. Net the sales are roughly the same, but the people who are buying the cars are different. Interesting how people who couple of years ago, which where they would never buy an electric car are now considering the purchase, because Elon Musk is wacko theories about all sorts of things.
I test drove a Tesla Model 3 just to see what it was like as I own a Hyundai ionic 5 Namsan. To describe the ride as unforgiving is generous, it’s like going down stairs in a wheelchair 😂 I couldn’t believe how bad it is, I couldn’t drive one every day.
I own a 2019 Model 3 SR+ and I can confirm. I keep telling myself it's like more like driving a full-size electric road-legal go-cart, but then once you get past that thought, you say to yourself "Yeah but it's supposed to handle like that because it's low to the ground, heavy, and was made to be affordable for what it is...". You get used to it after a couple of weeks and it becomes normal. Anyway, I still love mine. I laughed so hard at your comment - good one!
My suspension MY RWD (2023) is great, best of any car I’ve ever been in. The latest update on auto wipers went from not great to amongst best (acknowledge no auto wipers are perfect) often wipes ahead of my thought to act manually. Warning alerts are good, apart from narrow roads, parked cars then it’s defo not happy & manually over ride. But is safest car ever tested, willing to take that! It has alerted me timely way to things I may have momentarily not noticed. Anti-Elon stuff is nonsense, genius is not going to be sensitive to your political correctness crap. Frankly I’m with him, don’t understand the butt-hurt nonsense. He just speaks truth!
Sure! But I am reporting what *so many people* are saying. I don’t care who Americas vote for. I care about Tesla being all it can be. And currently his outspoken views are doing the company damage
Define free speech. I am free to believe what I want within the confines of society and laws. I absolutely support people who disagree with me. Where I have a problem is with people who disagree with facts and then claim “free speech”. Musk’s interaction with UK free speech was worst over the summer. “Free speech” was platforming and personally amplifying people like “Tommy Robinson” who post open lies to provoke riots. Musk not only interacts with this guy, he then says “civil war inevitable”. Freedom isn’t freedom if it tramples over the freedoms of others and breaks society. Even in the US the 1st amendment isn’t absolute.
Only someone who has a Tesla as their daily drive can understand what you’re saying. ❤❤❤❤
Excellent review. Very helpful as I am currently looking to buy a model Y.
Perfect summary of the good and the bad! I’ve been the owner of a MY LR since May 2023 and couldn’t agree more with your findings Ian 😊
A valid point - why didn’t I raise it? It’s so integral to the car it feels like I’d be praising it having a steering wheel 😂
Thank you Ian, again a great revue
I love my tesla coming from Berlin , what I dont like is the poor parkingsystem
I will try to! For clarity, the current restrictions on automation are nothing to do with the EU - they apply globally
Another fantastic video.
I like the firm ride !
Want something softer, buy a Citroen !
I also had Pilot Assist - and honestly find that Autopilot is leaps ahead of the Volvo system
Don’t worry about it. Elon is a genius
Hi Ian,
Yet again another good video . I'm thinking of getting Starlink what about a video on Starlink so others like myself get a good idea about installation and performance cheers
Watch my Starlink video!
Replaced a £60K 2022 X5 with my Tesla.. Love the MY . I’m never going back to legacy.
“Balanced and amusing”. Yep. That’s a decent summary of what I’m trying to do 🫡
Glad to hear it still makes you smile after 2 years.
Great video
Just found your channel, thinking of gettiing a tesla… one thing I would like to ask.… Have you slept in it...? I know strange question… Fab channel by the way..
Not yet!
Nice Video, thinking of a MY. Current car is a Subaru Forester Sport, it's auto whipper is best I've had BTW. So true about Elon.
I adjust the wipers myself without the auto. No need to take eyes off the road. Memorise the order of; off, auto, 2 intermittent, slow, fast. Hit the wiper button then scroll the settings using left scroll, keeping eyes on road. Easy.
Voice commands are your friend here - Press the RH button and say "Speed up the wipers" or "Turn Off the wipers" etc
Or
Do I wait for the release of the 2025 Juniper model?
Do I buy it outright or lease it - the young woman (manager) informed me that leasing is the way to go and only my generation buy cars today.
Quick calculation in my head was that changing my car every year 3 years would cost me more in the long term. I’m anticipating that I might not want/safe to be driving beyond my mid 80’s
Any advice greater appreciated, thank you.
There are some serious deals available to lease the RWD…
I had a Ford Mondeo that had Auto wipers that were totally spot on. Wiped when a few spots were there and faster when it was raining.
I had a Mondeo on an 08 plate. I don’t remember them being that good. And the Polestar I’ve just rented - weren’t great either
@@justgetatesla true , and their softer rubber compound is likely helping based on my experience of all weather tires
Acceleration boost *everyone should buy that*
I fancy it but by how much has it increased your insurance? My location, age and of course, the car means I am paying 3.5X more than I paid for my X3 2.5 years ago. I am afraid to ask my insurers; even on line I can hear them rubbing their hands together and taking that intake of breath usually associated with tradesmen when viewing a problem.
From the USA here, with 2024 Y :) #2 Wipers, ya agrree. FSD, had for 30 days for free, very impressive even on backroads. #3 I dont find if bad at all, but our other cars are minis so you know.
I do know! I still miss my MINI
4. Warning Alerts
I feel your pain. Frequently
I have not
10:57 - depends on perspective.
Absolutely yes! Watch for my forthcoming Polestar 2 experience- a very expensive car when you spec it to match a Model 3…
100% agree on EM. He is the reason I am not buying a Tesla.
Your content is very helpful. Thank you!!!!
I fully agree with point 5 of dislikes. I am seriously thinking to not buy a Tesla anymore because of him! I am from EU.
Musk isn’t a reason not to buy a Tesla.
Me included
That's how I decide most things in life, I ask my thighs.
@justgetatesla My '23 LR shows 378bhp on the V5C... odd!
@@p6picasso That's the correct figure for a Model Y LR.
That I can believe. Though with glass roof cars being pretty widespread it’s hardly just a Tesla thing.
I've never had auto wiper issues on any car and I've had them on all cars since 1998 🤔
My model 3 was crazy on cruise control, it just had a mind of its own.
Very. Very tempted, 0% finance pcp or Hp.
Response to dislikes:
Not Cheap, it's reasonable when you compare it with any ICE car that has similar performance numbers
High Insurance: That is a knock on your insurance companies not Tesla. In the US my Model Y LR is actually cheaper than a BMW to insure
Stuff not working Fair enough
Ride Rough: That has some validity but I have taken a 2,500 mile round trips and had no issues, roads in US are also rough roads in many places
Warning Alerts. I have only experienced that when car thinks I am too close to car in front, I also have the setting to medium
Elon Musk: I agree he is socially inept and has no business owning a social media company. I refuse to use social media rather than not buy a Tesla. Why don't people not buy VW's when they are constantly lying about actual car emissions or Toyato cheating on safety issues.
Absolutely agree with you about Elon
It isn’t about politics. Truly. It’s about public trust. Trump supporters might not like it that Elon is putting people off, but he is. I just want Elon to do the things he is brilliant at - business. Leave the politics out of it
Yes👍
Here, here for the Elon comment. I've been a happy Model Y owner for a couple of years but now I worry that the hate for Elon, which I have sympathy with, makes it a target for vandals. I don't think I would buy another Tesla if he carries on as he is now.
❤ the matrix
*He’s sold almost 2 million sales this year .. you are simply wrong to claim there is a decline in 2024 compared to 2023*
Declining in the UK
And that is why I bat away the people who say “how can you support Elon Musk”. I support Tesla.
I don't care what Elon says, but I am an admirer of his work ethic. It's truly remarkable.
@@justgetatesla I agree, your either in business or politics, not both, because one can damage the other.
I've just ordered a Model Y long range, and it took me a long time to be OK with that because of Musk. He's a liability for the company now.
Yes and no. Yes he’s put a few people off. No it hasn’t made any dent in sales. No it hasn’t stopped the share price from going to the moon
Thanks Ian. LOL...auto wipers possessed by Satan🤣 They have gotten better...but I have to agree 💯
I just got a Tesla .
Your likes and dislikes match mine exactly ❤
“Auto wipers possessed by satan”…😂
Ditto - yep Elon should simply shut up about politics and concentrate on his companies as he has a great mind as an engineer :)
As a business leader, Elon is up there in the all time greats list.
Hello ian, from india
Amazing the difference a little old comma can make 😊
Picking up my model Y in a weeks time. My wife was dead against it because of Elon. I have had to sit her down and explain all the advantages of a Tesla and talk her round. My winning statement was that we weren't buying new and there for someone else had given Elon his profit .
Teslas are nice cars but musk is too dangerous.
I would never support musk by buying a tesla. Too many better vehicles from gm and Ford where I live.
Painful 4 & 5 ...yes, you are exactly right. The bings, bongs and screeches are absolutely mind-numbing. Musk is a nut case. How can the CEO of an electric car company back a presidential candidate who wants to shut down the entire EV market.
Good question. Agree.
Please, note that Elon has always supported the Democrats, however, the Biden administration has been horrible against Tesla first by ignoring Tesla totally, then by harassing Elon and Tesla with all kinds of things e.g.. a ridiculous update of warning icons, cancelling his bonus.
Elon has always said that there is no need for subsidies for EVs and there should be no need for the mandates, and he is right, it's a total waste of money
Since there are only two candidates he supports the other
No matter what EVs will be cheaper and by 2030 95+% of all new and used car sales will be electric, not hybrids and especially not hydrogen, lots of OEMs will not survive and new will enter the market
Wait for your American viewers to pop up and comment that the US isn't a democracy! ;)
I wouldn’t dream of telling people in other countries how to think. I wish Elon would take the same position… 🙄

I didn't even look at a tesla because of Elon,.
Which is a shame- but increasingly you aren’t alone. Which is a problem for Tesla’s long term success
Good summary. I’ve owned a model Y for over 2 years. Love the car (mostly) but can no longer fund the crazy guy Elon is turning into.
So you prefer not to have free speech
