Hi thanks for this piece..I am interested in the ASIP programme but I currently live in the UK,so I need to know more regards to the cost of the program and the kind of visa I am entitled to, if My appplication is successful ,can I come over with my family.
Hi Dr.Corte I am an International Optometrist interested in practicing in the United States because there is so much opportunity for growth and to gain experience and more knowledge in the Optometry field, also it is a great place to specialise in one the many optometry fields.
Dr. Ryan I’m a student in Taiwan(going to study optometry this year) if I want to be a optometrist in United States, should I finish study four years in Taiwan or apply for the college in United States?
Thank you so so much!! I have been looking for someone who can explain a little bit about the advanced standing program and the opportunities for foreign optometrist. I’m from Colombia, I graduated just one year ago. I want to embark in the process for work someday in the United States. I’ve found 4 options for advanced standing program: 1. Western university 2. New England college 3. Salus, at Pennsylvania 4. University of Alabama (Birmingham) How I can prepare for the NBEO? How do you think is the better option? (Between the university)
Congratulations! To best prepare for the NBEO, look into the KMK Optometry board review courses. In regards to the universities listed above, they’re all great. I’d pick whatever program is most cost effective.
Q1: Can I just do the nbeo straight away or do I have to go though some bridging programs for international graduates like me in order to do the nbeo? Q2: in the uk the optometry bachelors degree is an undergraduate degree would that affect my likelihood of getting accepted as I don’t have 2 degrees like home students?
Q1 - You have to attend an accredited school or college of optometry in the US before taking NBEO. Q2 - I’m honestly not sure. You’d have to reach out to the schools with this program for more information.
Hi Dr.Corte! Just want to ask that i am doing my 5 year optometry program from Pakistan and want to practice in US so do i have to study in optometry school for four years again or i can also jump through the optometry bridge program?
hey there, it was really informative video. I was wondering that directly applying for optometric residencies in US after getting optometry degree from home country is off the table too? I read your article about why residencies are a great option for newly graduates and yes watched your video about it too. I really wanna know that if I get a chance in applying for residency after completing the steps you've stated above. Thank you for being kind enough to explain it all
This information is really helpful I was wondering if an international optometrist can also write the OAT and do a full 4 year program How do I need to go about getting those pre-requisite courses
Hey Ryan, great explanatory video. I was wondering, since I'm an Ophthalmologist from Europe and I'm looking for opportunities to move to US and it's a hard, painful, long and expensive journey to do all the exams and residency I'm leaning more towards Optometry. Now, me having a degree in Ophthalmology, is it any kind of advantage? Or would I need to take classes, exams once again or is it only exams and the process is quicker? Thank you!
Hi Brooklyn. Congratulations on your success thus far. I’d reach out to each individual optometry school with advanced standing programs to learn more about what courses you’d need to take to get your OD degree.

Which university in the united state offers the two years bridge program and what's the cost of the tuition .
This is a question for Google, as these programs are always changing.
Dr. Ryan I’m a student in Taiwan(going to study optometry this year) if I want to be a optometrist in United States, should I finish study four years in Taiwan or apply for the college in United States?
I would apply for bridge programs in the United States.
Are there any scholarships available for international applicants for Doctor of optometry program?
Not that I’m aware of.
I have a question. What if an international optometrist will work as a licensed optician? Is that possible? If yes, how? Thank you.
I’m sure it is. You would just have to get an optician license for the state you’re working in.
