    Have you read the book? These are some of the main differences between the Crazy Rich Asians movie and novel! In the book, the Goh family was more subdued. Peik Lin’s family in the books is still distinctly “new money”, but one of the biggest changes is that they’ve never heard of Nick of the Young family. In fact, in the novel its implied that the Youngs are so rich that their entire family is something of a mystery. Also, every member of the Peik Lin’s family was amped up to be even more over the top in the film.

    There's also the fact that Eleanor was a lot less dramatic and materialistic in the movie, which I thought was a good choice because I couldn't take her seriously in the book.

      Most Born and bred Asians hated the movie. It claims to 'celebrate diversity' but doesn't even come close to accurately portray the cultural diversity of Singapore. It was all marketing plot and further overhyped by many overly reacted Asian Americans.

    • @fleur_and_flower
      @fleur_and_flower 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian and Henry Goulding is half English and half Malaysian. They do have other Singaporean and Malaysian actors, like the actress who plays Rachel's mother and even some of the rich, snobby girls. Remy Hii, who plays Alistair, is Chinese-Malaysian and English from Australia.
      The Young family in the story are ethnically Chinese, but they just happen to live in Singapore. Honestly, the cast is fairly diverse. The director could have gone strictly all Chinese, but they have opened up roles to people who are Japanese (Sonoya Mizuno who plays Araminta), Korean (Ken Jeong and Awkwafina - technically she is Chinese-Korean), and even Filipino (Nico Santos who plays Oliver). Singaporean and Malaysian actors were also casted for other supporting roles.
      Seeing how Singapore is multiracial, they have a good mix of people in the CRA cast. It's a small step in the right direction, but you know Hollywood. It takes more than just one movie to make any kind of change, especially when it comes to representation when all Hollywood cares about is profitability. It took them 25 years for Hollywood to greenlight another movie with an all Asian cast.
      Just be glad that the author turned down previous offers where directors offered to take on the movie only if they can change Rachel to a white girl to make her more "relatable" to the audience...

    • @DonoZeek
      @DonoZeek 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fleur_and_flower it is true the offers were offensive but what you said earlier is more offensive. Multi-racial. They cast singaporean and malaysian cast. You are either horridbly racist or sadly stupid. Those are nationalities not race. Just saying this movie is multiracial or all asian or is singaporean movie means you are either racist or stupid. Please do understand that this movie is racist and only support chinese washing and singapore tourism board.

    You also missed one, the very beginning. London 1986. It wasn’t Eleanor who ended up buying the Calthorpe Hotel and she never made the call to her husband. Eleanor’s sister in law, Felicity Leong (Astrid’s mum) was the one who made the call-to her husband, Harry Leong (Astrid’s father) who then purchased the hotel from Lord Calthorpe for his wife, making Felicity the owner of The Calthorpe Hotel, not Eleanor. Also, the hotel manager, Reginald Ormsby, wasn’t asked to clean the wet floor in the book, but was fired and asked to leave the premises by the new owner, Mrs. Felicity Leong, Eleanor’s husband Phillip’s eldest sister 😊

      I've never read the books but I've been looking up spoilers, and it seems like the biggest change is that the Youngs aren't even that rich in the books. They can't even afford to keep the house in the last book.

    This is one movie where I didn’t really mind the changes. I feel that the movie is more suited as a movie and the book as a book. I really enjoyed them both. I also got mixed messages about Amanda in the book. She seemed more interested New York social life than Nick. In fact it seemed like Nick was on the the back burner and the only reason she considered him was because he mom was pressuring her.

    reading the book after watching the movie gives you a total new point of view for all the characters especially the dynamic between
    Astrid and Michaels affair
    and
    Rachel and Nick’s relationship
    it was beautiful the way we saw how both relationships changed throughout the book, representing how money and family plays a big role in marriage and social status, also,
    Eleanor Young not being the main antagonist in the book, and instead it focusing more on Francesca really switched up everything

    • Ah ma was way more involved in the books. She wasn’t just a listless grandmother. She was the strict matriarch of the Young family.
    • Astrid’s father Henry Leong bought the hotel for Astrid’s mother Felicity. Eleanor had nothing to do with it.
    • Eleanor was nowhere nearly as intimidating as she was in the movies. Eleanor was just a simple socialite with the characteristics of a kdrama mother in law.
    • Philip was more involved in the books and was an engineer.
    • The Young’s don’t have a family business and we’re so secretive and old money and that’s what made them so special.
    • Michael didn’t cheat on Astrid; he only wanted to get out of their marriage without divorcing Astrid to not shame her. The cheating thing was fake. He really did love her.
    • CHARLIE WU.
    • Alistair wasn’t some playboy asshole like he was in the movies. In the books he’s close with nick and he’s a chill lovable guy.
    • The young sisters were hilarious and more devious in the books.
    • Peik Lin was this fashion forward charismatic girl who didn’t look like a little chick. She was this voluptuous long haired fashionista.

    IT'S A GREAT MOVIE! i love all the cast! but while watching the movie, i keep on commenting in my brain, "wait! what?!", "no", "that's not there?!", "hey! where did that come from?!", "that's not what happened!" etc.! it's kinda hard to watch the movie if you have already read the book, actually. but i still enjoyed it, though. and i agreed with the voice over about a sequel,i think it would be really hard for them to make another one bcoz of all the twist that they've made. i think the story would be hard to have a part 2. jmo

    I honestly think they should have left the scene with Astrid and Charlie dancing at the wedding in the movie. It kind of gave you a new perspective on the guy who magically pops up in the end credits.

    I read the first book in like 6 days and I absoluetly loved it. I am currently reading the second book but slowly because I don't have a third book so I don't want it to end. I was looking for the third book and couldn't find it anywhere because it was sold out. I have more bookstores to go to. I truly hope they have them beacuse I need the third book. Like now. And I am a huge Astrid and Charlie shipper. They are my fave characters so I am very excited for the movie. And I truly hope I will find the third book and read it.

    Major downside for me was Nick's proposal, it made the movie really shallow and predictable. It would have been more realistic if Nick didn't propose to Rachel.

    Number 1 so trueee !!!! In the 2nd book, Eleanor Young just agree about his relationship with Rachel. That’s why, I thought so weird, how come that he end up gave Eleanor ring to Rachel , and based again on the second book : Rachel engaged to Nick, and her ring was chose by Astrid ..
    * little spoil*
    But the book reallyy really worth to read ...

    I read the book thee years ago so I didn’t remember much when I watched the movie I didnt remember much other than the fact that Astrid’s story was COMPLETELY different from the book, that mahjong scene never happened, nick didn’t know he wanted to propose to Rachel till the end, the ending was SO different from the one of the book because Eleanor never approved of Rachel till the second book when she found out Rachel’s father was actually rich. And Rachel actually believed her dad was the bad man in prison when her mom then flew out to Singapore to make everything about her past clear. After watching this video I’ve realized how everything is different and now it’s actually bothering me

    Also,
    Princess Intan (though unmentioned in the book) wore the Star of Malaya and gave Kitty Pong diamonds. Kris Aquino should have done that because that gives her role justice. 😭
    Also, Nick and Collin bailing out of the bachelor party should have been done as it is written!
    Nevertheless, it was awesome.

    and it was Felicity not Eleonor that buys the hotel at the beginning, i think they wanted to give a littile bit more spotlight to Elenor but still. Also at the island during Araminta's bachelorette party Rachel meets Sophie, and they just placed Astrid instead.

    Honestly if they wanted to make it more accurate they'd have to make it a tv show but, between the cost of shooting in Singapore and the cast themselves they'd need a Game of thrones Budget to pull that off.
