Such a great record so evocative of the mid 60s. Yet another great mix.

I’m so confused. It’s clearly the Papas but that does not sound like the Mamas singing

Sure wish all the component tracks to this song were still available but they had bumped and ping-ponged to be able to add more tracks. It would sound richer and a little less strident. I noticed that you don't hear Barry McGuire starting to sing at the beginning anymore so I assume it was removed. An artifact left over when Barry had recorded the vocals to the backing track first (a bad idea) and it was wisely given back to the Mamas & The Papas to finish. Barry had that gravelly voice of his on the Eve Of Destruction record which was not a good fit for California Dreamin'.

Mr. Wallaton. Excellent remix. I’ve done my best using Audacity and couldn’t get the sound you created. Spectacular result mate. What software do you mix with...and does it also narrow wide stereo?
Congrats on retirement. I share your 40’s-60’s appreciation as well. But I take it back to the 20’s for authentic country blues that I clean up in Audacity pretty well. It’s a great hobby and time flies while editing as you know.
    Regards from So. Cal. USA!

Thanks Dean! I use Steinberg Wavelab, but I'm pretty sure all the techniques I use could be done with Audacity as well. I use Wavelab because it's what I've always used and it's familiar to me now. And yes it does narrow the stereo if you want it to. The secret to getting a bigger sound is to mix in a backing track. You can only do so much for the sound quality by altering the EQ or the dynamics. There a few tracks from the 20s and 30s on my channel as well, but I'd like to do a lot more remixes of the really old stuff.
      Regards from Nottingham England!

@@radiowollaton8521 Thank You for the prompt response and answering my questions about software. Which version do you use?
Audacity does a respectable job of mixing/editing, but it doesn’t compare to pro quality such as SWL.
I mixed California Dreaming and it was an improvement, but I wasn’t able to narrow the tracks by converting the stereo tracks...to mono...and back to stereo (and a little further tinkering) which reduced audio quality.
As you stated, you can only do so much with EQ’ing, compressing, normalizing etc., and expect not to sacrifice something dynamically. I’m familiar with the backing track sync editing. Your software wins!
One thing about the Ca. Dreaming file is how well you brought the drum percussion forward. Try as I did, I wasn’t satisfied, so I junked the project.
To me, a real challenge would be to clean-up the 20’s and 30’s blues music...and big bands...that were recorded with very primitive equipment and have lots of surface noise. It would be great to hear the likes of Daddy Stovepipe, “Georgia” Thomas A. Dorsey, Geeshie Wiley & Elvie Thomas brought into 21st century. As much as I enjoy those pioneers of early blues, I do like your neighbor from Wales. Michael Barratt aka Shakin’ Stevens...

@@deanmartin703 I use version 6 of Wavelab. It's an old copy but it does everything I want it to and in a nice intuitive way. There are some nice VST plugins that come with it. Stereo Expander is good for narrowing or widening the stereo in a precise way. Another plugin I use a lot is called Spectralizer. This brightens the sound by adding harmonics to the track. It produces a much nicer sound than simply lifting the high frequencies with EQ.
The drum sound in California Dreaming is all down to the backing track I used. I want to have a go at some more of their songs. They're not the greatest stereo mixes in the world and definitely have room for improvement.
I like Shaky as well. In fact I've made a remix of Merry Christmas Everyone. But I've done the reverse thing with it and made it sound like a 1960s stereo mix with the vocals to one side. It sounds pretty cool like that. I might upload it next Christmas!

We have very similar tastes and I downloaded everything you have in “ByClick” playlist downloader, so I’ll pick and choose. 2 files deserves real credit for your work. Sea Cruise and Sleepwalk. Also, the instrumentation behind Clarence Henry is truly outstanding. Well spread out and nothing artificial in your mix. Well engineered mate!
Do you have anything lined up to work on, or do you create whatever your fancy?

@@deanmartin703 I'm quite happy to communicate this way. Other people might be interested in the technical talk so let them read it if they want.
I went through the old UK charts and made a list of every mono and bad stereo recording. I'm slowly working my way through this very long list! I also encourage people visiting this channel to suggest remixes. And very often I'll hear a record on the radio that I think might remix well.
I also have a huge 2TB collection. The only thing missing now are the stereo remixes that I've yet to do. I didn't know about “ByClick” playlist downloader. I'll have a go at that.

Thanks for the compliments on the sound quality. It's largely down to the quality of the backing tracks. Some of the karaoke backings are truly outstanding. They must use some very talented session musicians.
