In this Don't Speak guitar lesson video, I will show you all of the guitar parts for this smash hit by No Doubt. Including the acoustic guitar solo!
No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont definitely knows his way around the fretboard. In "Don't Speak" he uses techniques including fingerpicking, palm muting, ska style strumming patterns, alternate picking and even some sweep picking.
"Don't Speak" is a great all-around song to learn for the intermediate level guitarist due to the variety of techniques Tom Dumont employs.
I will star the lesson with that very recognizable fingerpickied chord progression. I will also demonstrate ways that you can still hold your pick while doing the fingerpicking so you can quickly jump into the strummed sections of the song.
I will take you through each section of the song in the order that it appears and show you all the chords and techniques used.
At the end of the lesson I will grab an acoustic guitar and show you how to play the guitar solo.
Tom Dumont's guitar solo fits this pop song extremely well while still showcasing some pretty high level guitar chops. You will find some sweep picked arpeggios, alternate picking sequences and more.
I will break the solo down into phrases that should be pretty easy for you to comprehend, so hopefully you will have it under your finger quickly. It is very fun to play once you do. :)
I hope you guys enjoy learning this fun song from No Doubt! #dontspeakguitarlesson #nodoubt #guitarcovers
Probably the most complicated chord progression I have tackled in years! Thank you, Carl!
Song sounds like a cross between Aerosmith's 'Dream On' and Pachelbel's 'Canon in D Major'.
Reminds me of Breakfast in America by Supertramp cause of the intro. Of course, you can immediately tell they’re diff tones and all but I love that pedal note action.
that's because canon has the most ripped-off chord progression in all of music.
I was wondering, do you transcribe all of the lessons you do? Nice lessons btw keep on rocking man.
May I request Every little thing she does is magic by the Police??
*twothunbsup*
Thanks a bunch for this!
Best lessons on the net. Teaches you how to anticipate where your fingers will go next. I have to play this at a Zoom party on Saturday
How’d it go?
yeah, how did it go?
Carl. Your teaching style is absolutely fantastic. A yank who loves Oasis, Guns n Roses. The Foos AND Iron Maiden
Thanks for all that you do!
Thanx for a great lesson on yet another epic song.. It was really worth while watching ur tutorial and I had alot of fun learning this beautifull song.. I actually love the fact that you don't give tabs it actually forces a person to really pay attention to the finer details.
Agreed but sometimes I really miss the tabs.
This is awesome, thanks! (I feel like if you tell someone to play this entire song flawlessly on acoustic guitar and they do, you can safely say they've mastered barre chords 😂😂)
bro if someone plays thos this song flawlessly on acoustic your best bet is shut the hell up and listen to EVERYTHING that person has to say about guitar. Unless they play country of course🤣
Anyone who can play this on acoustic has hands of titanium.
thank you sosososo much for this video, it's really useful ♥
Does anyone have tabs for this lesson? Help me please somebody, it is hard to understand everything because i am beginner and speak different language
I was in the middle of this lesson when you got hacked!
Glad to see you're back up mostly unharmed, can't wait to take 'No Doubt' to the stage now!
Hi Carl ! Thank you so much for another great tutorial of yours...I have learned this in less than an hour, and for that I really thank you and appreciate you. To me, you truly are a passionate guitar teacher, we all appreciate your hard work and passion...I hope you make a tutorial, one of these days, on the guitar solo of Crazy by Aerosmith...I'll wait patiently for that, but I hope you'll do a tutorial for that song. Thanks again and more power to you...:)
@GuitarLessons365Song
what's guitar effects do you use in this video ?
this song sounds simple but very complicated to play
edit : done the whole song. thanks to Carl!
Thank you so much. I appreciate the way you teach your lessons. They are easy to follow and much better than that other guy who's face always pops when I type "how to play _____ on guitar".
can you do you and I by the scorpions please. I keep on searching but no one has a tutorial on it, all that comes up is still loving you. Thanks:)
Nice job on the solo. The tabs I’ve been using are at a different position. Your way flows more naturally.

Please? I'd love if you do a lesson
Does anybody know the chords Tom does on his live performance’s for the intro before they go into this song
Thank you for teaching us this.
Thanks Carl for your videos, Regards from Peru
neato man i love this cheers sensei
Nice! But the bar chords.. are very difficult. Thumbs up anyway nicely performed! ( i managed with the bar chords :)). Thanks)
Do you mute the high e-string on the b flat major chord? Because i play it just on that part like an a-shape barré, because I always mute the e-string accidently. Or should i just practice it the way you do it, till it works? Big thanks. I only found the version with a capo, but i hate using the capo, since you can play this song without one.
Hey Carl, I was wondering if you could maybe post a lesson of the guitar solo from Journey's "Only The Young" sometime soon. It's one of my favorite songs, and I can't seem to find any videos or tabs anywhere. I've been following your lessons for about a year now, and I greatly appreciate what you do. I hope this comment doesn't annoy you, as I'm sure you receive many requests all the time. Thank you.
Hi Carl, can you please make a tutorial video for sunday morning by No Doubt... thanks!!!
Hey carl brown i dont know if you will respond but i found you in my guitar magazine. I was like loook its carl brown. Just thought i would tell.
+Nicholas Candelaria what magazine is that? :)
that was guitar world magazine i was like OMG ITS CARL BROWN
I can't figure out how to memorize that beginning progression, because there is no pattern.. I don't think? I know I'm just going to have to play it a million times to get it, but it just sucks. Also, I can not hold that pick and use my fingers the way you do it, but I am really good at hybrid picking. You should suggest hybrid picking to your views, as well. But thanks for the tutorial, you are a really good teacher and guitarist.

Do you know Hoochie Coochie man by Hendrix? Please learn us.
You can also play this using hybrid picking style so there's no need to worry about where to keep the plectrum during the picking sequences. Great lesson btw. Greetings from across The Pond!
Amazing lesson! Cheers but slow down slightly on the solos in the future, kept on getting lost and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Almost perfect Carl. You just forgot to tell what is the part played during the solo
I guess the "strange" chord at 14:20 serves as D# half-diminished, leading us to the dominant chord (G#) of this section (which begins with a C#)
Carl Brown is a LEGEND!
