The number and variety of characters makes me think of back in high school, when everybody wanted to be either a video game producer or anime creator, but all we wanted to do was create characters, none of the boring stuff like backgrounds or coding physics etc. Feel like the character designer for this game finally got his dream job only for it to be for a Blockbuster exclusive racing oriented game but he was still like "Eff it, I'm making a zillion OCs anyway"
*(hands in 3 double spaced pages per character, for individual backstories)* Department head: "Johnson! Cut it down to a single paragraph. Double spaced!"
I really don't like 'difficulty' settings that prohibit you from properly finishing the game. If an 'easy' mode doesn't allow you to finish, it should simply be called 'practice' difficulty and leave it at that lol
fun fact about the unlockables: they're both references to previous N64 games Boss Game Studios worked on. the milk truck was an unlockable in Top Gear Rally and the Twisted Edge is based off Twisted Edge Snowboarding
Thab! Stop apologising when you miss a week's upload. This task is monumental and if someone can't get by without their weekly upload, they need more hobbies.
Wow, this game looks sooo good for an n64 game, like, with better resolution it could be a PS2 game! Running at a solid 30fps! no dips! Very well made.
@@frenchie0800 not "Better" i said With Better Resolution" it *could* be a ps2 game. The polygons in the models and terrain are very high, and there is no texture warping or seams. ThaB even admitted the physics feel like "Test Track" which is a very advanced game to compare it too. It makes sense when he says that this was one of the last games to be released on the system, it shows.
I found this in a local pawn shop around 2002. I had enough money to buy just 1 game & I chose this & a big N64 memory card over Super Mario 64. I think someone had lost the cartridge after renting it from Blockbuster, then sold it after finding it again. I had zero idea that it was a rental-only game or how valuable it would be nowadays.
Man you made me feel better about myself when you said it took you 6 or 7 tries to get through the qualifying. I just ordered a copy to add to my blockbuster collection, slowly getting all the N64 games I like with "property of blockbuster" stickers on them and documenting the journey on my youtube channel. I felt so silly earlier making a video about stuntracer and having such a hard time beating the qualifying lap, it took me about 8 tries to do it. Makes sense why I only remember one snowy level from the weekend I rented the game as a kid. lol
There are more solid racers on the 64 than i thought. Good stuff. Can't wait for another nba in the zone. I feel like your sports game vids are some of the funniest
I just read every characters' backstory from pausing your video. The nazi joke at the start of Major Evil's bio cracked me up, and also Leatherette's bio, who must be a sadist, because it mentions she skins people alive. According to a google search of the manual, The dev who created all these characters was Rob “3:16" Stevens. Why does the guy have a psalm in his name?
The game switches to "high res" mode during replays, that is from 320x240 normal res to 512x240 letterboxed in a 640x480 interlaced output. That is why you got severe letterboxing during replays; oh, and the game has a resolution option where you can choose either resolution during the race, replays will be always displayed in high res tough.
Did you try HI-REZ Letterboxed - mode? -It runs just as smooth as low rez.(Like WDC, that uses the same graphics engine). Overall, this game has really good atmostphere, almost SNES like feel while playing it. It also offers similar semi-arcade concept as Wave Race 64, where stunts are not required, they are rather additional fun/challenge for more advanced players. Very solid game. It is a true shame that this was not really available, while rubbish games like GT64 are so easy to find everywhere.
Never played it, but this game looks super nice and runs well, reminds me a bit of Hotwheels Turbo Racing, but it seems like it has more content to it. I wouldve loved this game as a kid.
Man, I would have loved this game if I had it as a kid. Shame it was a Blockbuster exclusive. My favourite thing about this series is seeing all the hidden gems I would have never known about otherwise.
@thabeast721 thee (?) question mark power-ups would definitely have to be that upon collection it opens and or closes a different way to go on the track/gains access to shortcuts/chain shortcuts (like one opens another)
I have never been more invested in a series. Keep it up man, thanks for the uploads! Does anyone know why on the list, there are so many duplicates? Different versions of the same game or something?
Every couple of minutes watching this game in motion in this vid made me exclaim, "Damn this game looks great and has such personality!" It was soo disheartening in the days of the N64 where most games where lazily crafted with little interest or effort from the developers, especially racers! Some racers looked like straight-up vomit with their muddy visuals and the crusty music would grate on a players ears till they bled! That's why i mostly relied on the Ps1 (heavily at that!) for racers in the fifth Gen of consoles, but this gem (and most of the Midway related games like this was), Beetle Adventure (by E.A.of the Need For Speed games on the PS1 too), heck even Star Wars Ep.1 Pod Racer (more flare and style over the somewhat weaker visuals in my opinion) made you proud to be an N64 owner! Mario kart needs no mention, and honestly I only like the SNES, GBA (oddly enough maybe since its like the SNES original), GameCube and Switch ones though! This game should have received at least a port on the Dreamcast with a higher resolution, frame-rate or preferably both! Funny enough the visuals are such a stand out that exceeds many of the Dreamcast's basic attempts anyway! 😅
Hopefully one day I can get a working rom of this game. I remember playing it as a tot and getting seriously frustrated that I couldn't beat a certain boss, then one morning before school I fired it up and whooped him first try, so happy with myself and the day went on fabulously. Knew nothing about Blockbuster exclusives at the time or else I would've asked to buy a copy when they were being sold off.
A strong point of this one is that it runs very well. Seems a solid 30fps. Other than Automobili Lamborghini and Ridge Racer, I don't know if any other racer featuring cars that does this. Stunt Racer is kind of a Kart racer in drag, but still. Edit: Top Gear Rally 1 and 2 are also good 30fps, also Overdrive isn't bad if you turn hi-res completely off.

So true, I thought something similar XD
This is probably the smoothest racing game we've seen so far. Also some of the best animated; that dancing rabbit had actual secondary motion.
In the space level, you were driving on the planet's rings, of course. Ya know like Saturn?
Yeah, I was also gonna comment on that
The render distance in this game is actually hella impressive

The back stories were quite fun to read. So glad you didn't cut them in the video beast!
The track texture blurring when gaining speed looks modern and impressive, really sells the sense of speed. A great looking N64 game.
