My Rear FJ40 Axle, How To Remove The Rear Third Member, Prep For ARB Locker, Banging

- Ive come a long way since the last thing I pulled a third member out. And yet, I still haven't learned anything... On my quest for more traction I decided it was time to install this ARB Rear locker, I figure that should help. The struggle was real though, as I hopefully show. Also Rachael and I had the pleasure of being on Dan Simpsons podcast "Classic land Cruisers" on Spotify. Check out for those long drives, should be a good listen.

You can say that again!
I loved watching Rachael loosen that up for you! I'm rarely one who wears safety glasses, but something about hitting a razor blade with a hammer while lying on your back...
Yeah, my safety squints could use some work.
I love that you guys are back!! Sorry it took so long to find you again, but I'm hooked once again!!
No worries my man! Always happy to have you back with us.
I’m so glad you grabbed the putty knife! RIGHT before you did I was saying “putty knife putty knife!!!”
You know imma jam a bunch in there.
You're my hero! Safety Third.
Hammer time.
10:12 this is why an air chisel is one of my favorite tools
Also a good idea. Although next time I’m going to try the jack method…
I struggled getting my oil pan off when the cork gasket turned rock hard. I used my Milwaukee oscillating tool by grinding off the teeth and rounding the corners. It sliced through that gasket like a fat kid at a buffet.
I know about buffets… so I’m guessing it went really well 😆
Before I get started, just wanted to say that I appreciated the Marlin homage photograph. Never met the man, but you could tell that tongue and cheek was his thing. 🤙🏼
Marlin is one of the great ones. We’d all be better off if he was still here, and if we do what we can to act like he did.
Making an offer on a '72 FJ40 tonight...I blame you. Might be in touch for part sources.
This! This is what I hope to inspire. Keep the old steel alive, save the planet, restore a classic. Please let me know if you get it and what you need. Instagram is best for messaging.

Thanks Greg. Trail and error. Mostly error.
I’m actually just about to do this with an auburn LSD I got from cruiser brothers. Not regearing so I don’t plan to mess with the pinion, just set backlash where it was
Solid purchase. Once I get the rear sorted I’ll probably focus on the front… curious to hear how that Auburn works out.
@ 2:32 .. that does not look to be a broken pinion seal, that looks like a leak between the shaft splines, I would remove the flange from the pinion and clean the splines real well then use a flange sealant or something similar to seal the splines.
It’ll more than likely be remedied by replacing the coarse output shaft with a finer spline, which will hopefully address both possibilitiesz
that fluid probably shouldn't glug... be sure your axle vent is working properly .... it's also a potential cause of your pinion seal leak
The vents pretty clean, could have been due to me not removing both drain plugs? Eh, upgrading is always a good call.
Pinion seal is not leaking, the splines on the drive yoke needed RTV to keep the gear oil from getting past them.
The glug was from not taking the fill plug out.
It all got renewed, but that's good info.
Put the jack under the diff centre and it will break free nice and easy :)
8:50 at some point Rachel is going to realise Ben calls his 40 "Honey" while he's getting down and dirty under the rear end
If some load with the jack doesn't work, give it a hit or two with a deadblow hammer while it's loaded and that should break it free
Man I should have looked this info up ahead of time. I was banging under that thing forever.
@@projectwrongway9127won't really find all those tips, but you've got plenty of mates to call on if you run into anything :)
There's always an easier way!
Always. You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve got good advice from TH-cam comments man.
Why DOES gear oil smell so bad?! And why does it eat through milk jugs so quickly, running down the shelf you stored it on...destroying the shelf and all the surrounding drywall? 😭
Right?! It’s like I can’t bury it in the earth fast enough! Nasty smelly dinosaurs
@@projectwrongway9127 You're just putting it back where it belongs, right? Right where it came from. You should get some carbon credits for that 😄
@GregVT it’s the way Mother Earth would want. 😆
