I can't belive I've watched every single episode of up to speed in the last month....now, this is the last one and it was shooted 5 months ago....i felt something like emptiness, I can't really describe it....but i will miss this show so so so much....I've enjoyed every single episode, every single topic and, I can't belive I'm saying it, but i will miss all the talks on the gas crisis of 1973 and all the tears shared with James when he was so emotionally taked away that i naturally followed him. I really love all this stuff and i can't thank enough all the donut guys for everythig. You're the greatest! I know that car history is a limited topic and you cover almost every brand, model and engine worth of mentioning but i hope to Get up to speed as fast as i could. Why don't we do something in italian with a European perspective about cars history? Or something related on simracing (i am a simracer from over a decade)? Anyway, I love you! A big hug from Italy
This episode marks the end of a truly great era for Donut. Long live Up to Speed July 20 2017 - August 20 2020. Unfortunately one of the many casualties of 2020. You will be wholeheartedly missed by all. Don't blow your engine on the road to Heaven, may you still be driving strong up there in the snowy sky! "We'll be back in about a month" - Up to Speed's famous final words
10:05 The NA FC was a 13B, not a 12A. The Turbo II engine was a 13B-T Edit: (some fact checking from some friends) - these further engines also used iron seals, not graphite - the SA was the first RX7 model, not the FB - the RX8 has 50:50 weight distribution, it’s just heavier than the FD - the FB GSL-SE trim came with rear disc brakes and a 13B hope that helps ;)
If car saleman were honest: "This pringles can is going to break once a month. So you will kick and punch your car and then sell it. But right after that, you will see your old car in Fast and Furious, at car meets, in Initial D. Before you know it you old car is rackin up all the hype, and they are now twice as expensive as they were when you bought yours, and even though you want it back more than your highschool girlfriend, you will never get it back."
Fairly accurate but just a quick addition people should know "This pringles can is going to break once a month...and our factory Mazda mechanics in the US aren't trained enough to fix them correctly. "
unpopular opinion but the FC is my favourite out of the rx-7 family. it just embodies the 80s so well, i love the boxy look with the lift back, and personally it feels like you’re sitting in a fighter jet. as a passenger, the floor is like ramped so your feet rest on a slope while the seat is tilted and sits far back, making you feel like you’re in a jet or something. it handles amazing, sounds great, feels great to drive/ ride in. honestly my favourite japanese car
I love my FD. I've had it since I was 19. Despite being on my second engine due to coolant seal failure after 2 years of ownership I wouldn't change it for anything. You have to drive a rotary to know how different it is to drive.
I've been looking for one for years, but there's none I could find in Illinois. Finally in Japan, but I'm on deployment so I don't have time to go car shopping. So close I can almost taste it
Here lies the last online relic of the once-glorious series Up To Speed. Once the highlight of many a car fan's week, now just another casualty of 2020. With high hopes of a swift return, all mention of the series vanished like dust in the wind, like so many other things in this cursed, wretched year. Many still hold out hope for its return, but time and again I find myself just unable to do anything but feel sad from the lack of new updates. Personally I'll be withholding my viewership on any of the content made after this date until new episodes make their unveiling, as frankly the best part of the channel, the one that made it what it was, is too harsh a pain to bear the thought of leaving. Here's to hoping 2021 turns brighter by gracing us with new episodes, but until such a time, I'll be here, remembering the good times on each thursday for years on end, years I had hoped would keep coming...
The FB isnt actually "the first RX-7".. The Series 1 was called SA22C, Series 2 and 3 were then called FB33 Also, the FC never came with the 12A engine. It was either a 13B VDEI NA with 140-ish hp, and 180 for the S4 Turbo II model and a 13B DEI with 160/200hp, the 12A was dropped with the series 3 FB33
I've had girlfriends like this car. Beautiful, fast, but screams annoyingly when you push her and prone to blowing a seal. (I used to live in Alaska...)
10:00 for any one who is interested, this is false. The FC never came with the 12A but what is know as the 13B Six Port, AKA 13B NA (Naturally Aspirated) as well as the mentioned 13B Four Port, AKA the 13B Turbo II. Edit: P.S. keep up the good work Guys love your videos and have been watching ever since the Up To Speed on the RX7 over two years ago.👍
I’m not trying to offend you but why did you write your dates like that and I agree they filmed a new episode like 3 weeks ago but they haven’t aired it.
I bought a 1987 Turbo II when I was 17 years old (around 1999). It was in amazing condition, had like 45,000 miles and basically looked new. I had for about 8 years. I only modified the intake and exhaust. I kept the engine bay so clean that my neighbor demanded I enter it in the car show (I didn't). I feel now that I didn't really deserve such a nice, fun, and quick car when that young, but I had a blast with it and didn't crash or anything.

And the first gen was the SA series the FB was just 84 and 85 I think maybe started in 83 I can’t remember, also after the FB no 12a carbed rotarys were available they were all 13b fuel injected
Sam Knierim the Rx7 came in 1979 as the sa22 and I believe in 82 the Actual FB. They were mostly all carburated 12a and 13b and the Gsl-se which was fuel injected 13b

I love how when James plugs donut content it's not just a plug, its a genuine link to his/their massive portfolio of driving history and knowledge in the shows they've done. James you're a legend and so is everyone else over a donut.
They deff should. They are both in the same league of TH-cam followers. But because their followers overlap it wouldn't help either of them gain viewers so that's prob why it hasn't happened. But donut deff needs to take the hi/low cars to hoonigans events.
I actually had the privilege of going to Rob's shop a few days ago to give him a hood for the four rotor (you know why), and man oh man there's some truly insane stuff coming.
I haven't technically watched the video at the moment but I was really desperate to know what the fuss was about the announcement and the fact James had a slight sense of regret. After hearing you out, I actually don't even feel bad and you shouldn't too. Helping a friend out when he needs you does not require any hesitance at all. This community is extremely friendly and treat you like you're one of them and I strongly think that they acknowledge your decision. Stay safe out there
It's been like 9 weeks since they said they were taking a break. Hopefully Up To Speed comes back soon. I don't want this series to end the same way Science Garage did.
"Which meant that it was longer, and heavier, and that perfect weight balance was gone, ruined" They were really only a couple hundred pounds heavier depending on the model (With the lighter trims weighing well under 3000 pounds)- but they still had a near 50/50 weight distribution.
@@24sevenracing I own a 93 Rx7, and have some experience with Rx8s. The rx8, in the handling department- Is no joke. The weigh is similar enough for the lighter models (Under 3000 pounds, manual, etc). But a decade newer in suspension geometry and design, multi link in the rear, notably stiffer chassis- etc. The biggest let down for the rx8 in all honesty- was the lack of power in the engine. if theyd had a turbo or, maybe less ideal but still good- Supercharged option? I think people would have a different historical view point looking back on the rx8 than we do today.
@@zacht9447 You could- But it misses the point. I dont want to sound like a "purist", but the rotary is definitely part of the appeal. You can find better look, better handling cars if youre going to go through that trouble. Unless you REALLY "love the rx8s design" and "dont want a rotary", enh
@@SidewaysGts I mean honestly the rotary engine was never really more than a novelty it has issues that are next to impossible to fix just due to the way the motor is and its inefficient and its just not really that cool to me like I'd rather get a junkyard ls to mess around with or maybe try to cobble together two Hayabusa engines to make a motor that will Rev just as high

Apparently the FB(S3) GSL-SE variant did have a factory turbo version (which was more or less an FC early release turbo in an FB body) as a late release in 85 but, I've never seen one in the US or in person or anywhere else other than online ... Except, of course, for the GSL-SE in my driveway with an FD(TT) power-plant (No, it didn't drop right in. Was an "F" 'n "B" of a mod). @Gavin Shirley is right on the money with the 12A/FC fiction, 12A was discontinued with the advent of the 86 FC(S4).
"Car culture is most fun when its about community" this gave me goosebumps
10:05 The NA FC was a 13B, not a 12A. The Turbo II engine was a 13B-T
Edit: (some fact checking from some friends)
- these further engines also used iron seals, not graphite
- the SA was the first RX7 model, not the FB
- the RX8 has 50:50 weight distribution, it’s just heavier than the FD
- the FB GSL-SE trim came with rear disc brakes and a 13B
hope that helps ;)
To add, the gslse (1st Gen) had a 13B. I wanna say the turbo 1st Gen was a Japan only??

If car saleman were honest:
"This pringles can is going to break once a month.
I want to drive 1 to see what al the hype is about
This sounds like a RegularCarReviews monologue LOL
Did this happen to you sound very specific
Fairly accurate but just a quick addition people should know "This pringles can is going to break once a month...and our factory Mazda mechanics in the US aren't trained enough to fix them correctly. "
A corolla is just a corolla. Nothing special.
unpopular opinion but the FC is my favourite out of the rx-7 family. it just embodies the 80s so well, i love the boxy look with the lift back, and personally it feels like you’re sitting in a fighter jet. as a passenger, the floor is like ramped so your feet rest on a slope while the seat is tilted and sits far back, making you feel like you’re in a jet or something. it handles amazing, sounds great, feels great to drive/ ride in. honestly my favourite japanese car
Fear not that’s not too unpopular of an opinion. While I’m an FD guy, it’s safe to say that I like fc just as much.
His glow up is unreal. He shows his true self now, seems free.

I love my FD. I've had it since I was 19. Despite being on my second engine due to coolant seal failure after 2 years of ownership I wouldn't change it for anything. You have to drive a rotary to know how different it is to drive.

1JZ and a bit of 2JZ
@@raymondjunger4742 They're both Toyota inline 6s lol they basically sound identical
The FB isnt actually "the first RX-7".. The Series 1 was called SA22C, Series 2 and 3 were then called FB33
Also, the FC never came with the 12A engine. It was either a 13B VDEI NA with 140-ish hp, and 180 for the S4 Turbo II model and a 13B DEI with 160/200hp, the 12A was dropped with the series 3 FB33

The FC didnt come 12A. They were all 13b either 6 port N/A or 4 port turbo
They need to stick to cars that they have a genuine interest in, like Nissan's and shit.
I caught that, was a little confused.

"Which meant that it was longer, and heavier, and that perfect weight balance was gone, ruined" They were really only a couple hundred pounds heavier depending on the model (With the lighter trims weighing well under 3000 pounds)- but they still had a near 50/50 weight distribution.
Plus the long wheelbase helps create very stable handling, and with short overhangs it’s only 5.5” inches longer than the FD.
