I met this lady at a concert with Metheny and Mehldau at the Mondavi center in Davis and at intermission, we walked down to the lobby where all his CD's were on sale and as I was pointing out to her the ones I REALLY like, when I told her that "Bright Size Life" was my favorite, Pat was in the lobby behind us, overheard what I said and replied "You're not the first I've heard say that, many people tell me that!" She turned and was shocked, he said thanks, shock my hand and walked away, then, as his last song of the show, he PLAYED this song and her and I COULDN'T STOP smiling, what a nice guy, I'll never forget that! 👍
Joe DiVita do you remember if he why or gave any reasoning? Just curious. At first, I didn't get Bob's parts at all in comparison to J & P. After more intensive listens in perfect atmospheres like long tour drives through the Midwest and a few play throughs (I'm a drummer), I get more and more what he was trying to express. I play this tune differently, as I'm sure most do, but that's only a testament to Bob's style and technique that is truly one of a kind.
This was my second PM album, after purchasing American Garage (PMG). This is still in my rotation. I even love the cover art - so much so that I love listening to this album throughout the summer!
This music will always evoke feelings and memories in me of a long distant past, or great times and people, too sublime to articulate. Also of bright sunny days ahead.

It is nice to have this video on the web as a scholastic document as well as a great, historic piece of music. This was recently voted as one of the Top 10 solos on a Jazz Guitar teaching website for the solo starting roughly at the 1:13 mark. I am a huge "Pat-head" and have what I think are all of his albums-- including lesser known stuff on other peoples disks and his book and bootleg teaching videos. This is one of his oldest works, and although the soloing here has some of what become classic "Pat motifs," I can't call it one of the first solos that comes to mind as The Ten Best Jazz Solos (even if he was beginning to re-define jazz guitar at this early age), given his classic Trio disks, his unique South American stylings, and the more popular Still Life (Talking) with "Third Wind," which is the first song I think of to show off Pat's chops in a newbie listener setting. "Third Wind" itself is dated now-- around 30 years old. My favorite song of all time is "Are You Going With Me." That, for me, is the quintessential Pat (along with "Song For Bilbao").
I seek this beauty in freedom within my own band, to channel this feeling yet remain true to the unique sound of our group. We do not try to sound like Pat Metheny , but look to him for inspiration.

The very first Metheny composition on the very first Metheny album under his own name and it's already an instant classic as is the entire rest of this album. My only criticism of this album would be that the Ornette Coleman cover-tune at the end does not fit in with the more introspective and country-jazz mood and feel of the rest of the album. It belongs on a more bebop-oriented album. This is really one of the greatest trio recordings of all time and Bob Moses is easily the most unique and creative drummer Metheny or Jaco ever played with. All three of these players are have very high-concept ideas and can express them well but more important than that all three of these players were born to play with each other, they complement each other perfectly and work together so organically and produce such a pure result. They keep each other in check and temper each others' over-statements or over-indulgences without an ounce of compromise, not an easy thing to do, and thus shape every tune into so much more than just excellent jazz, transcending all the cliches of Jazz to qualify as genuine American poetics, those spiritual territories of the American experience that only the maps made of higher abstracted sound metaphors or the specifically applied metaphorical language of music, and a specifically American form of music at that, Jazz, appreciated by only the tiniest minority of Americans, can provide proper navigation through.

I wish they'd remix this album. A good Pat Metheny interview on this recording, studio, provess, etc. is telling. Gary's mix is definitely sub-par & this wonderful music deserves waay better.
I totally agree, although, tbf, so much of the old stuff was recorded and mixed even worse, like most of Jimi Hendrix's work, more's the pity. I think Jaco was pretty jet lagged from his first day in Europe. Didn't have his own amp. Still, it could be brightened up, ironically.
Pat has said that many of the songs on this album started out as guitar exercises that he designed for his students. The main theme of this tune appears to be an exercise for the right hand involving jumps across 2 strings to play each note in sequence. That's just my guess.
If you ask yourself why the cooperation between Pat and Jaco has not been enough long, the answer is: in that group con't work two leaders.... and Pat has understood how much great could has been Jaco in a very short time....
I heard Miles Davis said "Jazz" is just a made up word to describe social music. I guess he meant music that more people could understand, enjoy and play.

As much as I would like to dislike Pat Metheny his breadth of melody is unrivaled in jazz music and I would like to see a "Classical composer " translate it to the orchestra if it is possible. :)
This album and music is as relevant today as it was in the 70's, if not more.. Tell me Taylor Swift or Justin Beiber will be remembered in 6 years... I think knot...
