I remember watching this live when I was 11 or 12 thinking "wow that last note was terrible" as if I could do any better 💀💀 Girl I can't hit any of the high notes under favorable conditions, let alone in freezing cold weather and with a tired/sick voice. Idina deserves wayyy more credit than I gave her 😂😂

I love Idina and have been a supporter and fan of her since she was in Wicked when I was 10, but holy crap. This was one of the worst live versions I have ever seen of Idina. She scooped the entire beginning, added unnecessary riffs, and screamed the last note. I think her days in Wicked killed her voice. She's so beautiful in every way I feel sorry for the fact that her voice is depleting, it makes me very sad.

She's said herself she never wanted to be a Broadway musical actress, but a pop singer. Her voice and vocal range fit much better there, and I agree with her.

Mia Davis but this song isn't demanding in any stretch. She just doesn't produce her sound correctly. The biggest flaw a singer can do is listen to their own voice as they sing. What happens is you augment the improper muscles to sound big in your own ear, but it does the opposite effect to the audience. This creates tension and lots of improper threat musculature and tires out the voice because the only way then to truly be heard is to push on the vocal chords even harder, and this is a never ending cycle of tension, push tension as the voice closes off more and more. This is why at the end of the performance her voice is almost entirely closed off. The only way she could even phonate was to murder her chords. It doesn't matter if it's warm or cold out. A scarf will protect the throats just fine, and even a cold voice should not compel a singer into this kind of trap. The answer is of course the one employed by every great singer. They don't listen to their own voice. They feel their voice. They feel where the vibrations are, and this creates a system where you know literally where every note is located in your body, and all you have to do is buzz into that location to hit the note. Singing this way let's your true natural voice come completely through, and it never, ever, requires any throat tension whatsoever. None. All the tension is controlling the breath with the intercostals, rib muscles and pelvic floor
By the way, the reason why singers don't just feel their own voice, is because it sounds small to the singer when you do this. When an opera singer sings a high note, they hardly even hear the note at all. But ironically, the sound booms and pushes back to the very end of the opera house. If the singer were instead to listen to their voice and try to make a huge sound like this, it would sound huge within the singers ear, but it won't travel more than 20 feet in the opera house

I love Idinia so much and have for a long time but, she never learned how to use her voice properly. If she knew how to use her diaphragm when singing she could have avoided that voice crack. I may not be a professional but many people who are agree with me. I'm not hating on her at all but she can and has got this far with bad technique. She is capable of healthy technique because you can hear it in the cast recordings she has done. Many people do that same thing: they sound good on recording but forget their technique in the moment.
Matthew Wright hi! v late classically trained singer here! you can make it as far as idina has and not have proper technique. her problem in this performance specifically is that she either a) didn’t take enough air before the e flat or b) was singing directly in her throat which is v v damaging. she tends to do that second thing a lot, and it’s super unhealthy. belting requires you to sing in a higher placement; if you don’t, it’s screaming and not singing. :)
You can tell she tested her voice mid song and she botched it then too ("that perfect girl ^is^ gone"). She should've known better, but props for trying to appease the crowd.
Singing outside is hard. There are no acoustics to bounce off of. The sound just kind of does whatever. Add in it's late at night, below freezing, and she was probably on tour at this time. She's giving a hell of a performance despite the elements

Lydia Loo no she’s not. She’s amazing it’s just she wasn’t so well on this. She was sick, it was cold and she most likely had other things to do before that required her to sing. But a lot of other performances are amazing. At least she did perform live.
Indina needs to get a vocal coach and try practicing how to hit high notes without hurting her voice. Don’t get me wrong she is an absolute amazing singer but she needs more technique on those high notes. Also I think the weather affected a lot of her singing too. Her voice was probably getting scratchy. When it’s cold they should have them sing in a lower pitch that way it won’t damage their voices:)

I love Idinia so much and have for a long time but, she never learned how to use her voice properly. If she knew how to use her diaphragm when singing she could have avoided that voice crack. Not hate at all but I'm just saying that's why her voice cracked. She was Elphaba and that takes a lot of talent.

I may not be a professional but many people who are agree with me. I'm not hating on her at all but she can and has got this far with bad technique. She is capable of healthy technique because you can hear it in the cast recordings she has done. Many people do that same thing: they sound good on recording but forget their technique in the moment.
Matthew Wright hi! v late classically trained singer here! you can make it as far as idina has and not have proper technique. her problem in this performance specifically is that she either a) didn’t take enough air before the e flat or b) was singing directly in her throat which is v v damaging. she tends to do that second thing a lot, and it’s super unhealthy. belting requires you to sing in a higher placement; if you don’t, it’s screaming and not singing. :)
I'm sure you're super-qualified to make this assessment.

Singing outside is hard. There are no acoustics to bounce off of. The sound just kind of does whatever.
Add in it's late at night, below freezing, and she was probably on tour at this time.

Lydia Loo no she’s not. She’s amazing it’s just she wasn’t so well on this. She was sick, it was cold and she most likely had other things to do before that required her to sing. But a lot of other performances are amazing. At least she did perform live.
She is a little bit inconsistent because of vocal damage. But nevertheless she is still a great singer

Indina needs to get a vocal coach and try practicing how to hit high notes without hurting her voice. Don’t get me wrong she is an absolute amazing singer but she needs more technique on those high notes. Also I think the weather affected a lot of her singing too. Her voice was probably getting scratchy. When it’s cold they should have them sing in a lower pitch that way it won’t damage their voices:)
