Idina Menzel is one of those few people's who's voice can't be fully captured on recording. There is this spark to her live performances, which makes it impossible for a recording to ever compare to the real deal.
Totally agree. I've seen her live twice in concert and twice in if/then and there's something that no recording ever seems to capture. There's her physical presence and performance but something specific to her voice that never seems to come through in an audio recording. It's impossible to explain to people who haven't experienced it but I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I wish she would have won for this and not wicked. She was good in Wicked, but I honestly think most of the women who followed her acted and sang the role better than her. This role was great for her and much more deserving of award.
I don’t about the part where the women who followed her on wicked acted and sang better her. 🤔 Idina set that bar, which these women only continue to maintain and even raise. I also wished she won Tony with this role. Or Kelli O’hara in The Bridges of Madison County. Her performance in that show is unparalleled.
I must say that very few performers can sing alone on a stage, out of context and still convey exactly the emotion and sense of loss, hurt, anguish, and complete agony she was able to portray. I remember watching this when it aired and it literally brought me to tears. I felt those emotions from my living room. Truly amazing and a testament to the power of Broadway.
RA B Singers like Idina put such emotion into their songs that even out of context, you can kind of tell if it’s sad or happy. I love her and her voice.
It's so frustrating how most people associate her with Frozen now. She is so much more than that, she is so talented and it is so annoying that people don't know the extent of her talent because they only know her because of Frozen.
+Mollie Jones I get it. It can be annoying. But also people now are more aware of her because of that. She may be more of than that but she was very amazing in that. People found a connection. Don't use your connection to judge others' connections with her. The reason I say this is because it's exactly how I was treated when she appeared on Glee and fans complained about Glee since they knew her since Rent, as if they were better than me and similar new fans of hers at the time. It's not about elitism. Cuz look at the comment section. You're the only one who brought Frozen up.
I'm not saying that I'm not happy for her. I'm also not saying that Frozen wasn't great for her - you missed my point completely. I'm saying that it is ashame that some people only know her from Frozen when she's not just that. Don't be so butthurt, chill
Mollie Jones Sweetie, you were the one saying you were frustrated and annoyed so don't call people butthurt. It's not a shame. It's actually great that Frozen has opened up doors for new fans. Instead of being so pessimistic approach it with hope that the new fans will discover her work. That's being a great older fan to any artist.
Dear everyone who says she can't sing but has only ever heard her sing Let it go: Watch this performance. Still think she can't sing? That's what I thought.
+Amelia Nomura In this era of the interwebs it's super easy for people to pick one wobbly performance and focus on it. My goodness me I sound like such an oldie saying this kind of thing.
Amelia Nomura I personally have never said she couldn't sing. She IS inconsistent however. This performance is mostly fine, I saw her in this as well and she was just fine. But then compare it to other things she's done and she's all over the place. It isn't a matter of her not being able to sing, it's a matter of her inconsistency. One day she's fine and the next she's screeching and struggling to get any sound out. She doesn't have a technique that carries her through. And since she uses her voice more often than the average performer since she's a full time one, I'm surprised she even has a voice left after singing with that terrible technique for that long.
No you're definitely right. The thing is she isn't a naturally 'high' belter. The consistent 'high note' in this song is an a up until the end where she hits a couple c's. In the musical theatre world, that's nothing. She simply doesn't have a consistent high belt, which many struggle with. Especially singing the wicked score 8 times a week (where there are consistent d's, e's, and f's throughout) can cause some serious damage if your technique isn't very strong.
Saw her in If/Then a few weeks after this performance and it was amazing. Got chills every time she sang. Her presence on stage is unbelievable-I never could have imagined how it’d feel to see her perform live.
Danielle Stalter I agree! I’ve been her fan for so long and I thought I already know what to expect when I finally see her live. Well, she turned out to be a million times better live. 💞 An experience of a lifetime ☺️
@@shabytin I hope one day I'll be able to see her live as well. For now though I have to settle with televised performances and shitty cam recordings. :(
I was at Radio City for the rehearsal of this on the morning of the Tony's. She sang it unbelievably at 10am. Haunting, penetrating, beautiful. I was also lucky enough to see it twice on Broadway. On a personal note ..This music was a slice of sanity during a very dark period in my life. Since 2014 I have survived horrors: drug addiction, homelessness, prison, the loss of my brother, and his daughter. I have also experienced heights I never dreamed of: college graduation, performing at Carnegie Hall, and now I am living in Madrid, teaching English at a public high school. I sang this song in a prison yard in Brooklyn and I sing it every morning as I walk to the train on my way to work in Spain. 'I'll make you one last vow... to start over, and over, and over, SOMEHOW. My new life starts right now.'
Elphaba is my girl, don’t get me wrong… but that final note “NOW” is better than Defying Gravity or anyone who has ever sung it… lifelong admiration from one performer to another for you unending commitment to every performance you give… You keep all the supporting cast living, and singing, and dreaming…
I saw her in Hollywood during one of her last performances and it was so incredible. I went alone but couldn't miss it. I cried the whole time lol. her voice is impeccable!!!
I never watch this show, and this is the first time I hear this song. But she touch my heart, I just feel her through this song and she is able to make me in tears. And let's take a look at how the stage only need her to sing and there is no other cast/ensemble with her. That is amazing.

Wow! I’m like speechless. I’ve seen her other performance of let it go, defying gravity, wins beneath my wings and seasons of love but this is great. She’s still got it! Great song too!

I adore this show. And I adore this song especially. Idina's one of my favorite singers ever. So I say this with nothing but love. I hope she doesn't do a show like this again. This show really harmed her vocal chords. She's always had a very dangerous style of singing, where it puts a lot of strain on her to hit these notes. She's said it before. And doing this show for a year really did a number on her. You can tell, comparing performances both live and recorded, from before this show and after. Her voice has changed, and even now, almost a decade later, it's still not fully healed. She's a truly remarkable talent, and this show has had so much of an impact on my life. And it's because of that, that I hope she doesn't do a primarily one-woman show like If/Then again. Because her voice is too great to let it be put through this amount of strain, over and over again.
