    I’ve took 20 coyotes this year with my .17 HMR,
    It’s called shot placement
    Front shoulders or straight in brisket when facing you, it will drop like a rock

      It depends on where you are hunting. If you are around structures/houses animals and are calling yotes in within 150 yards or so...the.17 hmr or 22 mag is perfect. I hate misinformation.

    I shoot a .204 a
    .223 a.22-250 and a.243.all absolutely great on yotes but my favorite is the 220 swift Roger 26 inch heavy barrel

  • @tobyh3681
    @tobyh3681 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As far as ballistics go your cutting the .204 short. It almost matches the 22-250 as far as trajectory. Only about a half inch difference out to 400 & 500 yds depending on the bullet choice. I think give up a little energy to the 250, but not enough to leave it in the gun safe. Dogs have been taken out to 500+ with the .204 on a regular basis. My favorite bullet choice for a pelt friendly load is the 40gn Berger over the v-max.

  • @222triple

    .243 Win or .244/6mm Rem with 55-60 gr Bullets will get you out there and fast too. .17 Rem was the go to caliber back in the day. I just put a new barrel on mine.

    @exothermal.sprocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Advice isn't for reloaders. You can tear up a pelt or poke a small hole in it with just about any caliber, with proper loads and proper bullet designs.
    *".243 I don't know a ton about, other than it's just a really good cross-over round. You can hunt deer with it and you can take it out and hunt coyotes, it doesn't do a ton of damage. They have a decent amount of energy but the bullet definately drops because it's a lot heavier bullet at that point."*
    That's some poor and wrong information about the .243. It's actually ballistically superior to any of the .22 caliber cartridges, carries energy beyond the reaches of the .22-250 and .220 swift, and with proper loads does NOT drop as stated because it's b.c. is superior to them, regardless of muzzle velocities. If you have high b.c. you can maintain velocity, the bullet drops less, and energy is retained at distances beyond the .22 calibers.
    For instance, the 6.5mm cartridges on the market with relatively "slow" speeds are outclassing faster, louder, bigger cartridges at extreme range because HIGH B.C. contributes to less drop, more retained speed, more energy.
    The .243 is superior to the .22cals at distance. It packs a bigger wallop. If that's too much damage to a pelt, select different bullet designs and reduce load pressures. Otherwise, move down in caliber.

    • @CoyoteCountryTV
      @CoyoteCountryTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not wrong if you start off by saying your not real sure. We did switch to the 243 this year. So far it's working out. Ballistically it is the same as the 22-250. We are using Hornady Superformance 243 58gr Vmax. The drop is the same but the energy from the 243 is noticeably higher. The 243 hits a lot harder. I have noticed more pelt damage with the 243.

    Distance obviously plays a factor in which caliber you choose. Where I've been hunting, shooting lanes are 150 yards or less. I don't like to shoot anything over 100 yards. Think about it, the further out you drop'em the further back you have to carry them.

    If you wanna drop em on the spot anything 22-250 and bigger.
    I generally don’t give a damn about pelts so I usually have my 6mm Remington. Bangs out 75’s at 3,600 fps which is instakill on dogs at whatever distance you think you can hit em from.
    Longest shot I ever made was 460 though, they’re pretty hard to hit

Nice lil entry, no exit. Hell of a mess inside. 😁 Youll love your hornet. Set 1 inch high @ 100 yds, will be zero at 200 & 6 in low at 300. Aim for center mass on a yote & u cant miss the vital zone. 17 Hornet. is the hottest thing going around now for pelt hunters. The 17 wsm is close behind it for rimfire only laws. The 17 hmr is a little too light. 22mag will get the job done but it needs to be up close. 60-80 yards. Coyotes are not hard to kill, but its all relative. Father away , the more power you need .. .223 22-250, .243 and all work well.

    Good solid info there! Thank you for sharing. Wondering, for simple math purposes is it easier to sight in at 100 yards and make calculations from there, or as you discussed setting zero at 200 yards?

    • @CoyoteCountryTV
      @CoyoteCountryTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We zero at 200 yards for a couple of reasons. Most importantly is we usually have a 200 yard zone for coyotes to come into. Anything in the zone we just hold dead on. From 200 to 300 yards we just have a small drop to account for. If we sight in at 100 yards, 9 times out of 10 we would need to worry about bullet drop as a lot of coyotes are between 150 and 300 yards. I would rather not have to worry about hold over in the heat of the moment.

    • @rbm6184

      If using a mil dot reticle or a BDC reticle scope or ranging reticles, those distances are already on the scope at each dot on the reticle so no need for hold over if sighted in at 100 yds. Distances can be dialed in if using more pricey turret scopes. However if using a standard reticle it would be smart to sight in at 200 yds. for the reasons you mention I agree. For most scopes (2nd focal plane) it is a good idea to sight in at maximum magnification for true zeroing because only the image will vary with magnification. Point of impact should not change between magnifications but where you are aiming might. That is why they have mil dots or a BDC reticle. Max mag is also good for proper eye relief. 1st focal plane scopes have both the reticle size and image varying with magnification so range values stay the same. Good run down on calibers and good practical info. Enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

    • @FORDEVR
      @FORDEVR 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JD Tate yep agree. My .204 is sighted in @ 200 and from 0-250 you can put the crosshairs on target. And only a 4- 6 in drop at 300 depending on bullet weight. The .204 is also only 15.9in low at 400yrds with my 40gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and less with a 32 gr vmax.
      Some ppl say the .204 ballistic tip blow up on the outside of the fur/skin but I have never found this to be true. At under 50 yards you may have a larger entrance hole especially if you hit bone, but mostly the 32 vmax go in 2 inches and explode inside at 100-300yards

I have 14.5 inch barreled ar15 223wyld that I am very confident in hitting out to 300 yards but with the shorter barrel will it have enough energy at that distance. Ill be using either a 45gn nosler ballistic tip I have loaded to about 3070fps out that gun or some 55 gn amax running about 2900. Ive also got a 18' 6.5 Grendel which Id be using federal predator ammo 90gn jhp tnt. And I also have a 243 22' inch barrel and currently don't have dies to reload but I do have over 500 rounds of 100gn soft points. I would imagine if I took the 243 Id buy some lighter ammo. Anyways for you guys that do this all the time and you had my 3 rifles to choose from which one would you grab. No shots over 400yds at the moment. thanks no matter which gun I choose itll have the 4-14x primary arms orion acss scope on top.

      Josh, Coyotes are simply smaller animals. Im sure you wouldn't duck have with your .25 gun. Your in a Yote hunters wet dream area, winter dawgs will have thick premium pelts. Varmint guns are fantastic I have an AR15 in .204 hitting a golf ball at 300yds is not an issue, its the funnest gun I own, but I also have a Ruger m77 in 25-06 for summer dawgs it just tears them in half. Also if you have prairie dogs in your region, well that's justification for a new small bore gun. .204-.222-.223-.22-250 cant be beat.

      dls951 Thanks for the reply. Just got a TC Compass .223 after doing some deliberating between that and a 204. Cheap gun that I can throw a Boyds stock on for very little money. Appreciate the advice!

    • @dls951
      @dls951 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Save the money for the stock, factory is fine. Think 300-500 yard optics, and scope mount. Don't waste $$ on the cheep crap. $800-$1000 sucks until your hitting golf ball at 300 yards.

      Josh Lampe I live in Texas and for many years have hunted 'yotes with a 2506 and a 100 grain bullets . I handload and slow them down to control the expantion so the bullet won't blow a huge hole on the exit . If you don't care about the pelt a 75 grain will do unbelievable damage.

      Under 150 yards the .17 WSM is pretty effective against coyotes. I haven't lost one yet! But where it really shines is on close shots (under 75 yards) where it drops them like a rock with zero pelt damage. At that same range with a 22-250...it ain't pretty!

      Honestly i prefer to use the 22wmr.for yotes 30gr vmax poly tips 2200fps out the muzzle an about 1400 at 100yrds most shots on them are within 60 to 110 I've had. Weather head shot or shoulder I've dropped them with no problems taken a few hogs as well running the same round. It comes down to your shot placement. I would love to try 17hmr but can't find a rifle, so I'll stick with old reliable. Now the 45gr critical defense are amazing to run but its trying to find the ammo thats been the problem.

    I see different. My AR with .223 shoots flat at 300 yards. I’ll hit a 4 inch gong with a 1 1/2 grouping at 300 all day. 62 grain hold well. Not too light not to heavy, 3 inch drop at 400 yards. Don’t let one specific cartridge change your mind on the .223, it’ll impress ya.

    • @webb-cast1030
      @webb-cast1030 ปีที่แล้ว

      NOPE! Your #'s don't add up. Ballistics are science. Top velocity in the reloading manual for a 62 gr. bullet is 3025 fps. B.C. of .307 and a 300 yd. zero gets 12 inches of drop at 400.

    • @webb-cast1030
      @webb-cast1030 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dude! 22 Hornet w a 45 grain sierra blitz works awesome out to 300 yds. I took several yotes/wolves w that & it made 1 clean entry & NO exit. Dropped even the wolves like a brick. (and Alaska wolves are BIG, 150-180 lbs) Also kills moose & small bears. (100 yds or less just fine w a head shot.) Zero set @ 1 inch high at 100 yds. Hits 6" low at 300. Never tried beyond that. However, fox at 25 yds, BIG mistake! Golf ball sized exit.

Of course every coyote I’ve ever shot has been in a foothold or snare and I’m shooting them from a couple feet away, but in my opinion .22 is every bit as effective as a good thump with a pickax handle.
