      I wouldn't count on it to be honest. They don't have the same sort of momentum that they carried from the end of 2022, the improvements aren't as clear to make. It's possible that they'll create a race-winning car, chalking the stalling pace of the AMR23's development up to "growing pains", but with McLaren and Ferrari seemingly having a clearer direction, I'm expecting them to start the season behind them.

    The most uncomfortable question is whether Spa, Silverstone, Monza etc. will even stay on the calendar. F1 is leaning a lot more towards street circuits nowadays. Suzuka is already under threat by an Osaka street track, if i'm not mistaken.

    • @magnustan841

      Japanese roads are much narrower than other countries and in cites its mostly 90-degree junctions with hardly any roads for sweeping corners. It's unrealistic to host a street race there. Plus, the Japanese are organized and patient enough for a shuttle bus to Suzuka to suffice every year.

    I think the question of Andretti/Cadillac is getting pretty uncomfortable. At the very least, F1 should be fast-tracking an answer because the potential new entrant is spending money in the hopes of getting a team going. If they're going to say "no," they should just get on with it instead of wasting everyone's time and money.

    One major uncomfortable question is, in my mind, what will Mercedes do if its two drivers end up having an internal power struggle over who is the number one driver. The internal war between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg from the mid 2010s is still fresh in Toto Wolff's mind but another one could be brewing on the horizon after flare ups last year between George Russell and Lewis Hamilton due to track positioning and clashes in race. Mercedes could easily hand wave these problems away thanks to the success of securing both the constructor's title and driver's title due to having the most dominant car on the grid and keep everyone in check. However, now the team is on the back foot after two seasons of under performing due to having a bad car concept. What will happen if a struggle between Hamilton and Russell over whose the number one driver in the team and they don't have the benefit of a solid car that can bag consistent wins to keep their driver pairing focused on beating Red Bull?

    • @davestagner
      @davestagner 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Unless Lewis goes emo again like he did in 2022, I’m not concerned about it. At a deep level, George is just not quite as fast as Lewis, and we saw that in 2023, when Lewis was feeling good and in top form again. As great as many top drivers are (including George), the three world champions currently on the grid (Max, Lewis, Fernando) are ultimately just a little better. And speaking of emo Lewis, I think if he suffers another psychological setback like he did in 2022, he’ll just retire.

      @@davestagner Lulu might be a little bit better, Max and Fernando are way better. The latter two are known for being teammate destroyers, contrary to lulu. Max and Fernando would not allow a Rosberg to beat them for a championship, like lulu allowed in 2016. Max and Fernando are steps up from lulu in multiple ways, the comparison between the three of them is just silly.

    While its logical to say McLaren/Norris must “win races to improve”, its also an absolute mathematical improvement if they score 20 results between 2nd and 4th. If both Norris & Piastri achieve that they’ll be pushing McLaren into 2nd place in the car championship and they’ll be smiles all round and only one negative story for journalists to run.
    Results only really make sense in retrospect. This Norris story is feeling very similar to the “when will Jenson win”, which became increasingly dull as he could never get into the car he wanted. In the end it was only massive loyalty to one team that paid off for him. At the same time Alonso drove for over half the grid, but only won titles in the car Button lost his drive for to Alonso.

There is no court in the world that can force others to accept you, especially if your business proposition is rather shaky. And believe me, the proposition from Andretti is very shaky, the teams and FOM can see that themselves quite well.

      @@EntropicExergy The only rules are to pay the anti-dilution fee, which they are able to. FIA has given the green light, meaning they satisfy the contractual agreements to race. FOM's concern is about media licensing. If a team showed up for any sport, satisfied all requirements on paper to compete, and was denied, then it's anti-competitive, which in the EU, can lead to a lawsuit. If the rules allow for 12 teams, and two other teams can satisfy the letter of the requirements to race, there should be 12 teams on the grid. I don't think anyone is reasonably expecting Andretti to win a race within two years of entry, but once they're a works team, we'll see what pace they can really bring. If they're competitive in the midfield in 2027, we should be in for a good 2028.
